This October, CANSA highlights the importance of screening and early detection for breast cancer as part of its Women’s Health Campaign. Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 35 in South Africa, according to the 2007 National Cancer Registry. “We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Know how your breasts look and feel – discuss any changes you observe with your health practitioner. It’s also very important to go for a mammogram every year from the age of 40,” states Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO. She adds, “Women need to be aware of the screening opportunities available. We have mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa”. Reduce risk through regular examinations Many breast lumps are harmless, but they should all be checked. It is important for women to do monthly breast self-examinations and to go for regular clinical breast examinations. Symptom-free women of 40 and

older should go for a mammogram (a special X-ray to detect lumps in the breast), every year. Prevention and early detection The most effective weapon against cancer is knowledge. If you consider that one in four individuals may be affected by the disease during their lifetime, you will realise how powerful knowledge is in terms of risk reduction, prevention and early detection. CANSA’s prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns contain material re a balanced diet and promote a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, not smoking, staying safe in the sun, doing regular self-examinations and undergoing regular medical checkups. All prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns are underpinned by research. Other cancers affecting women: • Fallopian tube cancer • Ovarian cancer • Vaginal cancer • Vaginal clear-cell adenosarcoma • Vulvar cancer • Uterine cancer How women can reduce their cancer risk: Be aware of the importance of the early detection of cancer. This enables more effective treatment and a better chance of recovery.

Acknowledge the importance of a healthy balanced lifestyle: not smoking, being sun smart, going for preventative screenings and avoiding known cancer-causing factors. We also encourage women to reduce their risk of female cancers by: • Avoiding hormone therapy • Using condoms to help prevent sexually transmitted infections such as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is a high risk factor for cervical cancer • Consulting a healthcare professional on the HPV vaccine • Consulting a healthcare professional for advice on appropriate screening tests if there is a family history of cancer Mobile health clinics CANSA has nine mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa in October to reach women and men who would otherwise not have access to screening. They offer the following: • Clinical breast examinations • Pap smear screening tests for cervical cancer • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for men to detect prostate abnormalities • Cholesterol test • Blood pressure test

Theres nothing quite like entertaining in your backyard during the Summer. Whether it’s for a party or just to create a late evening chill out zone on your patio – check out this easy to do, budget friendly idea!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE LANTERNS: • 5 to 6 balloons, blown up to whatever size ball or lantern you want to make • large plastic drop cloth • scissors • twine or cotton yarn • basic white glue

• ½ cup cornstarch • ¼ cup warm water • petroleum jelly • clear, fast-drying spray paint • lantern lights or white twinkle lights

WHAT TO DO:

directly to Delivered ts through the paren chool! the s 1. Blow up balloons to desired size. Keep in mind that the size of your balloon dictates the size of your lanterns balls (it’s also helpful not to blow up the balloons all the way; a bit less air makes for rounder balloons).

3. Lay a plastic drop cloth over your work surface, and set up a place where balloons can be suspended from the air to dry. I draped the plastic drop cloth across the bathroom floor and into the bathtub so I could hang the balls on the shower bar.

2. If you plan to place a lantern light in your finished lanterns, draw a circle on the top of each balloon large enough to accommodate the lighting fixture. If you’re not planning to light the lanterns or you’d prefer to stuff them with a simple strand of twinkle lights, you can skip this step (just make sure you leave enough space while wrapping to stuff the twinkle lights inside).

4. Mix glue, cornstarch and warm water in a large container until all lumps are gone, then cover each balloon in petroleum jelly (using rubber gloves for this cuts down on the mess). 5. Feed the twine through the glue mixture until it is coated, then start draping it around the balloon. 6. Wrap the ball vertically to a comfortable tightness, then horizontally. Once ball is wrapped to your liking, use a piece of twine to suspend it from the shower bar (or drying space of your choosing). 7. Allow balls to dry for 24 hours. Then, pop the balloons. It’s like magic! Spray the balls with clear, fast-drying spray paint. 8. Once they’re dry, insert the lights, and you’re ready to party like it’s 1999!

Lamb shank with bacon, smoked chilli and apple. SERVES 4–6.

This lamb shank recipe has a deep, smoky flavour with a hint of chilli. To sample the best that shanks have to offer it’s vital that they be cooked for a minimum of 21⁄2 hours. Shanks can’t be rushed. YOU’LL NEED: • 375 ml (11⁄2 C) apple juice • 2 large dried chillies • 250 ml (1 C) seedless raisins • 60 ml (¼ C) olive oil • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 4–6 large lamb shanks • 2 large red onions, sliced • 6–8 large cloves garlic, crushed • 250 g chopped rindless bacon • 15 ml sweet smoked paprika • 3 bay leaves • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary • 25 ml (11⁄2 Tbsp) chopped • fresh parsley • 1 x 400 g can whole peeled • tomatoes with juice • 1 x 70 g can tomato paste • 5 ml (1 tsp) sugar • 5 whole black peppercorns • 750 ml (3 C) Pinotage • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) red wine vinegar WHAT TO DO:

• Combine the apple juice, chillies and raisins in a small bowl and leave to soak for 3 hours. Blend or liquidise the mixture until smooth. It

does not matter if the raisins are not completely blended as they will add texture to the dish. Set aside. • Heat the olive oil in a large, heavybottomed saucepan. Season the lamb well and brown the shanks, one at a time, until golden brown. Remove from the saucepan and set aside. • Sauté the onions, garlic and bacon in the same saucepan until soft. • Add the paprika, bay leaves, rosemary, parsley, tomatoes with juice, tomato paste, sugar and peppercorns. Stir in the raisin mixture and cook for 5 minutes, stirring continuously. • Preheat the oven to 170 °C. • Transfer the lamb to a large ovenproof casserole dish, big enough to hold all the shanks. Add the red wine and sauce and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Alternatively, use a deep roasting pan and cover the meat with a layer of baking paper, followed by two layers of foil secured tightly around the edge.

OPPI SPYSKAART

• Cook for 21⁄2–3 hours or until the meat comes away from the bone. Check on the liquid halfway through the cooking time. Add a little more apple juice to the cooking liquid if too much has evaporated during the prolonged cooking. Make sure the casserole is tightly covered again before returning the dish to the oven. • Once the shanks are tender, remove the casserole from the oven, remove the shanks from the sauce and set aside to keep warm. • Reduce the sauce by bringing the remaining liquid to the boil. • Cook rapidly until the sauce is thick and has reduced by half. • Adjust seasoning and stir in the red wine vinegar. Transfer the lamb to a serving platter and spoon the sauce over the top. • Garnish with chopped fresh herbs and serve with mashed potato.

Jou droom…of jou kind s’n? As kind het my ma my gedruk en gemotiveer om die beste te doen wat ek kan. Tydens skool en universiteit het dit vir my die eerstespan hokkie, toekennings en leiersposisies gebring en hierdie prestasies het verseker vir my deure oopgemaak. Maar as volwassene laat dit my ontnugterd oor hoe ‘n sertifikaat en ‘n toekenning my gedrag dryf, en die moeilikste van als – hoe ek my identiteit en selfwaarde daaraan koppel. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

Albert Einstein het gesê: “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

Dip-Dyed Napkins I am always looking for the perfect cloth napkins to use for when we have guests over for dinner. The problem I have is I can either never find any I like, or if I do like them, they’re stained and dull after many MANY washes. That’s why I decided to revamp my old napkins to make them look exactly how I wanted. I went with a gray color to be more of an accent than a focal point on my table, and I have to tell you, this is a DIY I am loving the outcome of! Here is how you can make your own …

DIY Dip-Dyed Napkins What You’ll Need: - 4 fabric napkins - fabric dye - Steel bowl

Directions:

Step 1: Following the directions on your fabric dye, make the dye! Make sure it is well stirred and the dye is completely dissolved. Step 2: Next, dip your napkins into the dye. I wanted mine to still be mostly white, so I just dipped the napkins in about 1/4 of the way. Let them sit and soak up the dye. Step 3: Once they’re dyed, rinse them out with cold water to let the dye set. And you’re done! Use these modern napkins at your next dinner party!

Durbanville Voorbereiding 6 OCTOBER 2014 Klein Entrepreneurs

Oud leerling kom besoek

Juffrou Coetzee vier hierdie jaar haar 30ste jaar by Durbanville Voorbereidingskool.

30 Jaar by ons!!!

Juffrou Mariette Coetzee (Graad 3A2) vier hierdie jaar haar 30ste jaar by Durbanville Voorbereidingskool.

Onderwyserdag

Donderdag 2 Oktober was Onderwyser dag. A group of parents from the school made this a day to remember. The decor, flowers, gifts and confectionaries truly touched each heart and once again made everyone realize how fortunate they are to be working with children.

Concert Success

Durbanville Preparatory School’s annual concert - this year being ROARR - was a huge success. Thank you to all the learners, teachers and parents for their endless energy and enormous enthusiasm.

Edgemead Primary School “Egypt Day”

The Grade 5’s ended their theme on Ancient Egypt by having an “Egypt Day”. They were immersed into the life of an Egyptian by dressing-up appropriately, feasting at a delicious Egyptian banquet and playing games based on the theme. Great fun was had by all, and it was a memorable way to end the term.

Cape Town Colour Run

A group of energetic EPS teachers took part in the Cape Town Colour Run on 18 October. It was a beautiful day, the run was great and everyone had FUN!

Before

After

Grade Sevens’ Entrepreneurship Day The Grade Sevens’ Entrepreneurship Day was a great success! Pupils worked in partnerships selling items or providing a service. They could sell hot or cold foods, crafts or run a game. Each pupil contributed an amount to their starting ‘capital’, did the necessary preparation whilst learning about the many skills required to run

a business, and finally the groups advertised their stalls in preparation for the actual Market Day. Reducing, Reusing and Recycling was encouraged. Hopefully, it was a valuable experience for all. We certainly were extremely proud of the Grade Seven pupils’ innovation, creativity and dedication to the task!

Official Singles Chart UK Top 10

The PS4 is one heck of a system, that much is certain. But, seeing as we haven’t even reached the end of its launch window just yet, it’s still a tad light on games. If you’re still debating whether to get a PS4 or Xbox One, this list will make your choice much easier (maybe). Don’t fret, dear reader: our pro’s have played just about everything that’s available for the console, and have painstakingly ranked the best of the best so that there’s no question as to which games deserve your hard-earned pocket money and limited time. - www.gamesradar.com

This post-apocalyptic tale tasks Joel, a man hardened by tragedy, with escorting a 14-year-old girl named Ellie clear across what remains of America. Most of the world’s population has been transformed into genuinely terrifying zombie-things, and the pair must sneak, fight, and run their way past the many dangers that populate their journey. The slow-burn action gameplay is often uncomfortably tense, forcing you to think about and adapt to each enemy encounter.

No doubt about it, Battlefield 4 on the PS4 is hands-down one of the best ways to experience this absolutely thrilling multiplayer shooter. The visuals look roughly a billion times cleaner, which has a direct effect on the amount of enjoyment you’ll derive from playing it. Few things are as exhilarating as fighting in massive battles with a total of 64 players, watching soldiers duke it out in the streets while tanks hurl shells at anything that moves.

The environmental destruction is more impressive than ever, the battles are tense, and even the single-player campaign has been greatly improved in comparison to the tragedy that was Battlefield 3’s solo offering. If you’re planning on playing Battlefield 4 on consoles, go PS4 or bust.

The Definitive Edition does just that, as it offers a revamped, more detailed Lara model, adds new environmental elements to enhance the island’s visual storytelling, and vastly improves the lighting effects to the point you see every raindrop in the sky light up from a flash of lightning.

BATTLEFIELD 4

The game takes you through Lara’s first desperate, life-or-death adventure in the early days of her tomb-raiding career. You’ll watch Lara transform from a scared, lost historian to a brutal, do-what-it takes survivor plunging into ancient ruins, crafting makeshift weapons, and scaling impassable cliffs. How do you make a great game even better? Why, give it a complete graphical overhaul, of course.

The Last of Us is the sort of game that only comes along once or twice a console generation. Its combination of subtle, crushingly-earnest storytelling and gritty action survival gameplay makes it a game you’re not likely to forget-and if there’s just one game you absolutely must play on your PS4, it’s The Last of Us Remastered.

THE LAST OF US REMASTERED

DID YOU KNOW? Latest from Tinseltown According to Apple, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available in a total of 69 countries and territories by the end of the month and are on track to be available in more than 115 countries by the end of the year, making this the fastest iPhone rollout ever. iPhone 6 isn’t simply bigger — it’s better in every way. Larger, yet dramatically thinner. More powerful, but remarkably power efficient. With a smooth metal surface that seamlessly meets the new Retina HD display. It’s one continuous form where hardware and software function in

perfect unison, creating a new generation of iPhone that’s better by any measure. NOT JUST A BIGGER DISPLAY. A BETTER DISPLAY. It’s one thing to make a bigger display. It’s something else entirely to make a bigger Multi‑Touch display with brilliant colors and higher contrast at even wider viewing angles. But that’s exactly what Apple has done with the new Retina HD display. HUGELY POWERFUL. ENORMOUSLY EFFICIENT. Built on 64-bit desktop-class architecture, the new A8 chip delivers more power, even while driving a larger display. The M8 motion coprocessor efficiently gathers data from advanced sensors and a new barometer. And with increased battery life, iPhone 6 lets you do more, for longer than ever.
