Many of us have been celebrating Oktoberfest for as long as we can remember. Have you ever wondered where the tradition started? Here’s a list of fun facts to help you become an Oktoberfest aficionado. 1. Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance. 2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue. 3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII.

4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs. 5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest 6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest:

Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu. 7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600. 8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. 10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling.

Food & Home 2 OCTOBER 2014 I think you are going to love these bite size Pancake Pops. Plus, they are so easy to make. by Melissa at No. 2 Pencil – http://www.number-2-pencil.com

Makes about 20 bite size pancakes YOU’LL NEED: • 1/2 cup flour • 1 tablespoon of sugar • 1 teaspoon of baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon of salt • 1/2 cup of fat-free plain yogurt • 1-2 tablespoons of milk • 2 tablespoons of melted and cooled butter • 1 egg, lightly beaten WHAT TO DO: 1. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Add yogurt, butter, and lightly beaten egg to the same bowl. Add enough milk to make batter stir-able, 1-2 tablespoons depending on the thickness of the yogurt. 2. Scoop out a heaping teaspoon of pancake batter. 3. Drop the pancake batter onto the hot griddle. Give the pancake about a minute

to set up on the griddle side so the lollipop stick won’t go all the way through, then place the lollipop stick in the batter just shy of the top of the pancake. Press stick down and use your spoon to smooth out the valley in the batter, that way you will have pancakes that look perfect on both sides!

you can use the lollipop stick to give them a quick turn. The lollipop stick was warm, but it wasn’t too hot to handle. Just be careful not to touch the griddle! To serve: Pile them up on a platter with fresh blueberries and maple syrup, and enjoy!

4. Space the rest of the pancake pops out, so you have room to add the sticks. 5. They cook really quickly since they are so small. About 4-5 minutes on the first side, and around 3 minutes on the second side. Once the edges start to dry out, they are ready to turn. 6. To flip the pancake pops use a small spatula to lift them up a bit, then

• Geniet ’n veilige somersonseisoen!

Edgemead Primary School Lunch Time Concert

A new addition to our Music Department this year has been our phenomenal Jazz Band under the expert tutelage of Mr Gibbons. These fine musicians performed at our ‘Lunch Time Concert’ this week and wowed the audience with a James Bond Medley. They

On 23 September, the Grade 3’s held the finals of their ‘Math Whizz Competition’. The competition was won by Ross Jacobs. The runners up were Ethan Manning and Reid Gilmour. Also participating in the finals was Leo Mischker and Josh Hagglund.

International Food Day

The Grade 4 International Food Day has become somewhat of a tradition at Edgemead Primary School and the highlight of the year for the grade four pupils. It is a really enjoyable way of learning about how other cultures have influenced our South African society.

NEWS / NUUS

Hoërskool Stellenberg 8 OCTOBER 2014

The learners from the Art/Design department of Stellenberg High School recently hosted an eco-fashion show, titled Grunge Couture. The learners were responsible for the making of the décor and costumes. The costumes were made from recycled ‘grungy’ waste and upcycled to glitz and glamour ‘couture’ costumes. The theme of the event was inspired by the film Moulin Rouge.

CROSS Traffic Light

CROSS het n veldtog by die skool geloods Traffic Light: Shining God’s light on the darkness of human trafficking. Ons het onlangs ‘n muntlegging gehou waartydens meer as R4 000 ingesamel is vir hierdie doel. Dis wonderlik dat die Stellies se harte warm brand vir liefdadigheid.

The Settlers High School Children of the world unite On 8 September 2014, The Settlers High School saw its enthusiastic RCL group launch the World’s Children’s Prize Programme. Recently, the RCL chairperson, Sinhle Radebe attended a workshop hosted by The Department of Education, where it was suggested that schools educate their learners about children’s rights, and what better way to do that than to have Settlers be part of the international children’s vote for the winner of The World’s Children’s Prize. “I think that bringing this particular initiative to the school was important for us as an RCL on the basis that we have a responsibility to educate our fellow learners not only on their rights, but also on the democratic

process. The World’s Children’s Prize vote allowed us to champion children’s rights and have a lot of constructive fun”, said Radebe. All classes received voting ballots, and the voting took place during the week of launch. Votes were counted and Settlers’ most voted nominee for the World’s Children Prize was the extraordinary seventeen year old Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai. RCL coordinator Mrs Ingpen said, “Knowing that The Settlers High School took part in the vote for World’s Children’s Prize meant that we were able to be a part of a global initiative, and that is, among other things, a true expression of Settlers spirit.” - Vivek Abraham (Grade 10 pupil)
