hile browsing the internet, I came across braai.com, whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day. These guys have very helpfully shared a list of braai words – a braai dictionary –to help you sound cool around the fire: • aai: A braai in the summer, as in a braai without the brrr. • abbraaiviation: A very short braai. • abraaimowitz: A Jewish braai. • asskebab: Someone who makes a fool of him/herself at a braai. • aweh: A word used to express

a positive attitude – “hello”, “yes”, “good”. • baas: Afrikaans for boss, or the guy holding the braai tongs. • bak: A dish made from aluminium or stainless steel, used to store meat before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern with this. If you’re eating straight off the braai, a bak is unnecessary. • barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. This is what you will learn to call a braai if you emigrate. • black wattle: Alien vegetation that uses a lot of water. This means that it’s good for the environment to chop it down and braai with it. It is a versatile braai wood, it burns easily when dry and makes decent coals. • blitz: Although this is a brand name, it is used as a universal term for firelighters of any kind. A frequently-asked question at many a braai, “Where is the blitz?” • blitzbraai: What happens when you light the blitz intending to braai, but end up getting blitzed. • BMW: Braai Met (With) Wheels. A braai with wheels that enable it to be moved around.

• boerie: Abbreviation for “boereworsroll”. • bok-dop-en-tjop: Term used for a bring-and-braai where you may bring your bok (babe), dop (drinks) and tjop (meat of choice). • bosberaad: A conference where you and your friends come together to discuss your strategy for National Braai Day. • Braai Hard: A 90’s action movie about a tough guy who braais a lot. • braai-jacker: A guy you really don’t want to invite but have to because he’s someone’s boyfriend. He claims to be a chef and manages to hijack the braai when the real braaier goois a dop. • braai tongs: The braai master’s weapon of choice. • braaiathon: A very long braai. • braaidsmaid: A woman performing a supporting role during a braai, for instance making salad, marinating meat, making braaibroodjies. Remember to make a date with your friends for 24 September! • For more braaicabulary, visit braai.com/braai-words.
