While most learners were enjoying their holidays, Rebecca Meder was adding to her vast collection of swimming medals. Becky won 2 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals in the 12 & 13 age group of the Western Province Long Course Swimming Championships that were held from 10 – 14 December. She was also awarded the Junior Female Victrix Ludorum. On 17 January, Becky swam in an open water competition held in Grabouw. She won gold for both the 1 km and 3 km events. Baby Spinach and Strawberry Salad

Strawberries are a spring gem that bear the promise of bountiful summer fruits that will soon be available. Their keen fruitiness makes them a flavorsome salad ingredient too. What’s more, they can be blended with the tiniest seasoning to make an instant and vibrantly colourful dressing. I like to select the firmest strawberries in the punnet for the salad and then use any riper strawberries to go into the blender. Strawberries love black pepper, so be generous with the grinder in your hand. YOU’LL NEED • 100 g baby spinach, washed and drained • 100 g strawberries, trimmed and quartered

NEW YEAR’S TECHOLUTIONS FOR ALL FAMILIES IN 2015
By now most of us have already given up on our New Year’s resolutions, and still not went to the gym or sorted out the closet in the passage. How about a doover, a second chance – no, a challenge? To take up one or more of these New Year’s resolutions which are designed to be easy, fun, totally doable, and familystrengthening.
W
hether you’re tech savvy or a bit more on the primitive side, your family will undoubtedly face media and technology issues in 2015 as they become more ubiquitous, affordable, and essential to daily life. Best be prepared. 1. FOCUS ON CONTENT QUALITY, NOT SCREEN-TIME QUANTITY. This year, focus on becoming actively engaged in your kids’ media. Help them make quality, age-appropriate choices, play or watch together when you can, and talk about any issues that come up. Some days they may spend a little more time on the computer learning to code, but the next day they may end up making crafts
all day. It balances out. 2. PLAY A GAME WITH YOUR KID. Maybe you love video games, maybe you’d rather do just about anything else. The point is, kids love games. There’s a certain kind of bond that develops when families compete – plus, it’s fun. Playing games with your kids also imparts important skills, such as taking turns, winning graciously, losing gracefully, and practicing good sportsmanship. Look for video games the entire family can enjoy. 3. LEARN SOMETHING ONLINE. Make this the year you finally learn to crochet, play guitar, or master a foreign language – whatever you’ve longed
to do. With so many opportunities for online learning, from casual how-to’s to formal lessons, there’s no excuse not to. Your kids will see you work toward a goal, manage your time, be patient with yourself, and discover you’re not perfect at everything. Bonus points for taking a class with your kid! 4. EMBRACE THE NEXT NEW THING. At some point this year, a killer app, viral video, or hot new show will take your kids by storm. Keep an open mind and explore this new thing along with them. You’ll learn more about what your kids are doing, how they can safely use new tools, and how to guide them through a changing landscape. Ask: What’s your favourite new app, game, or website? What do you like about it? How can you make sure you’re using it responsibly, respectfully, and safely? 5. GO INDIE. Expand your family’s entertainment horizons with independently produced movies, TV shows, apps, and video games. Stepping away from mainstream offerings exposes your kids to cultural differences, non-stereotypical characters, creative storytelling, and thoughtprovoking ideas. 6. STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING. Nobody wants to admit it, but the accident statistics tell the real story: We are still texting and driving. On Friday, 23 January, Welgemoed Primary School celebrated its 50th birthday. The day’s proceedings started with an exciting Capsule Opening Ceremony. Everyone was waiting in anticipation to see what had been placed in the capsule, buried in a wall, 25 years ago. Doctor Brand from MNED was also present and revealed the new sun dial. 50 balloons were then released into a clear, blue sky and this special day was concluded with delicious birthday cake for all.

Parow North Primary is a public school in Parow North, Cape Town, South Africa, striving to give our learners the kind of education they deserve. THE SETTLERS TURNS 50 IN 2015
This year The Settlers High School will celebrate 50 years of delivering excellent education since the founding of the school in 1965. A special Golden Jubilee Extravaganza is planned for May and there will be a special Past Pupil Function. Founders Day in April will involve past pupils. All past headmasters have also been interviewed: Mr Hobbs, Mr Reeler, Mr Gilbert and Mr Webster. A special 50 year celebration book will be published. Watch this space for more details.
INTERHOUSE SWIMMING GALA
On Friday 23 January the annual InterHouse Swimming Gala took place. Pringle House won the races while Shaw House won the Spirit Cup. This was the first major event of the term and the houses have been practising both their swimming and their cheering since the fourth term of last year. It was an exciting and spirited day for all the learners, as well as for the parents and past pupils who came to support the houses.

DF Malan se skoolkoor het verlede week die unieke ervaring gehad om in Carnegie Hall in New York op te tree. Die koor, onder leiding van mnr. Leon Starker, het deelgeneem aan ‘n uitvoering van The Peacemakers van die Britse komponis, Karl Jenkins. Op die foto’s verskyn die koor saam met
die internasionaal erkende komponis, terwyl ‘n paar lede voor die gebou van die beroemde Carnegie Hall staan. Dit was ‘n spesiale geleentheid vir die SuidAfrikaners, aangesien The Peacemakers gebaseer is op aanhalings en geskrifte van bekende vredemakers, onder andere dié van mnr. Nelson Mandela.
GRAAD 8-UITSTAPPIE
DF Malan se graad 8-leerders het op Vrydag, 23 Januarie 2015, die Groot Stap aangepak op Bloubergstrand. Op die foto geniet van die leerders middagete voor hulle terugkeer skool toe.
DF-MATRIEKS SORG VIR SKITTERUITSLAE
Met die bekendmaking van die 2014-matriekuitslae het die Dee-Effers rede gehad om fees te vier. Behalwe dat die klas weer eens vir ‘n 100%-slaagsyfer gesorg het, het nie minder nie as 92% van die klas toelating tot ‘n Baccalaureus-graad verkry. Drie leerders, Lilene en Inge du Toit en Tonia Schoeman, is opgeneem in die WKOD-merietelys, terwyl Tonia vir verdere skitterprestasie gesorg het deur die derde posisie op die nasionale ranglys in te neem. Die klas spog verder ook met 54 gemiddelde A’s, wat ‘n kwart van die klas verteenwoordig. Die kersie op die koek was dat Hoërskool DF Malan ook weer onder die top-20 skole in die WesKaap geëindig het. Vir hierdie prestasie is ‘n ministeriële toekenning by die premierswoning Leeuwenhof aan die skool oorhandig.

WELCOME, GRADE 8 MONTIES! MATRIC 2015
Fairmont welcomes a group of 303 Grade 8 learners this year. They are the biggest group of Grade 8 admissions in Fairmont’s history. After their orientation week, we celebrated their arrival on 24 January 2015 with the annual Grade 8 Fun Day. The prefects of 2015 made sure this glorious summer’s day was filled with a variety of team building and other funfilled activities.
FAIRMONT’S NEW LOGO
Last year a task team was established to develop a new logo for our school that would be simple but meaningful in its design and would become recognised and associated with the Fairmont brand. After some developmental attempts, the final product was established. Various elements associated with our Coat of Arms were considered, namely the vine leaves on the Coat of Arms that represent the vineyards of years gone by, on which Fairmont was established, and the beautiful mountains that form the backdrop to our school. The triangles represent the mountains in the colours of our school houses, with the inner triangle representing the “brown” of Fairmont.
Fairmont is excited about the coming year and to see the Matrics of 2015 reaching the end of their journey into young adults. We hope the final leg of their journey in Fairmont will be memorable and that they will wear their new matric badges with pride.
This logo will not replace our Coat of Arms, but rather complement it. Thank you to those involved in this project.

Well done to the Class of 2014 on their matric results. Our overall average for all subjects has fluctuated within a 3% range over six years since 2009. The results of 2014, given the general decrease nationally and provincially in overall performances by 2% and taking into account that 2014 was the first year of a new curriculum and examination style, our overall average of 64,2% remains within a narrow band of fluctuation over the six years. The theme for 2015’s Grade 8 orientation is Stellies Robots. These robots will be reprogrammed during the orientation week to become true Stellies. Activities during orientation
week include a swimming gala, Grade 8 athletics; sing songs, “fun day” which includes an overnight stay at the school. The aim of orientation week is to introduce all aspects of the
school in the most fun way. Grade 8s are encouraged to participate in all activities as it is a great way to make new friends.
