The first AWSUM newspaper was published in May 2013 in the Boland, little knowing that the newspaper will be launched within 10 months in 5 regions which included Boland, Helderberg, Southern Cape, Northern Suburbs and East London.

We are excited about our first Port Elizabeth AWSUM edition and would like to know what you think about this publication. Please send your comments to awsum@tiemedia.co.za.

The name says it all: we summarize the best school news and bring it to your doorstep. Someone called it a “breath of fresh air in the advertising world”. We want this breeze to blow some exposure over the schools in each area. With great excitement and almost a year since, we hope that everyone now reading the AWSUM, shares our passion for the community too.

The newspaper, which tends more to a newspaper magazine published by TieMedia, shares AWSUM news for the whole family and although our first edition in Port Elizabeth is our entry edition focusing more on the school news, we have sections covering interesting articles on lifestyle, financial tips, health, beauty and wellness and in the AWSUM Kombuis where we share exciting recipies.

When is enough TV enough?

Jean de Villiers shares tips on how to ensure a healthy year “As a professional rugby player, it is very important for me to eat the right food and stay in shape,” says Jean de Villiers, Captain of the national rugby team and Resolution Health Medical Scheme representative. “Apart from the set meals compiled by our fitness trainer when we are on tour, I try to eat four to six small meals which include fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a balance of protein and carbohydrates when at home. Obviously I try to steer clear of junk foods but do spoil myself occasionally with a pizza. After all everyone deserves a treat every now and again.” According to de Villiers, eating foods that are low in calories do not necessarily mean you are doing the right thing for your body. “The foods you include in your diet need to be nutritious and provide energy that is sustainable.

For example, when we are doing intense training I take some whey protein and glutamine supplements to help with recovery. It also assists me to be fresh for the next day’s training,” he says.

De Villiers also highlighted the importance of exercise in leading a healthy lifestyle, particularly in light of a recent survey finding that 49% of South Africans do not exercise at all. “You

don’t necessarily have to visit the gym five times a week to work on your fitness levels. You can incorporate exercise into your hobbies as well.

For example, apart from my rigorous training schedule, I like to be active during my downtime by playing a round of golf with my mates and walking my dogs. In fact, an average 18-hole round of golf requires anything between three and five hours of walking, translating into a good workout while doing what you love most. “Training forms a very big part of my life and in a normal week we would have six to 10 training sessions and then a game on the weekend. A typical training session would include spending time in the gym combined with on-field sessions. Each session would last anything from 60min to 120min and the intensity would vary,” says De Villiers. Healthy adults should ideally aim for 30minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per day, five times a week with the aim being to increase the resting heart rate for the entire period. This threshold is usually around 180 beats per minute minus your age, provided the individual is otherwise healthy.

“Too much screen time means less physical activity and face-to-face interaction with friends and family, these are both key towards creating a stress-free childhood.”

Negative effects Children who watch more than the recommended two hours of television per day can suffer from obesity, irregular sleep, impaired academic performance and behavioural problems such as aggression.

Excessive exposure to video games is linked with attention problems. “While it might be nice to get your kids out of your hair for a while, find healthier activities for them – the TV should be a treat, not the accepted norm,” advises Swart.

Monitor Make sure to research the TV shows, movies and video games your child watches and plays.

“If it appears too violent, includes excessive swearing, sexual content or explicit references, explain why it is not appropriate for them to view it,” says Swart. “Age restrictions are there for a reason.”

Tips: • Never place a TV or computer in your child’s room – this can result in irregular sleeping patterns and poor academic performance; • Discourage the association of food with TV time; • Ban excessive screen time; • Encourage healthy activities such as dancing, football, puzzles and group activities to help build social skills; • Set a good example – when you are home limit how much TV you watch, don’t stay glued to your phone or spend too long online; • Preview programmes and read the reviews, paying special attention to the age rating.

The little ones packed in everything they’ve got to win their races and it seems that there is a future Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the making. Racing towards the finish line in the “Mommy’s Race” is Tatiana Rademeyer followed closely by Shamique Terblanche & Caytlin van Jaarsveld.

Term one was concluded with a number of sports tours to various tournaments and training camps across the country. These tours included Girls’ Hockey tours to the York Festival in George, as well as the first team tour to the Fairmont/Stellenberg tournament in Cape Town.

Victoria Park athletes have shown great form this year and have been in the spotlight through all the qualifying rounds leading up to the Eastern Cape High School Championships held in Cradock.

Tennis Tour to East London

First Team Boys on tour in Cape Town

The Boys’ First Team Rugby squad also toured to Cape Town during the March holidays, and took on Milnerton, Mantana and Jan Kriel High Schools. The team won one, lost one and drew one match. This tour was a very beneficial opportunity to bond as a new team before the 2014 rugby season officially commences.

Thirteen Victoria Park High School tennis players were selected to attend a coaching clinic hosted and run by Border Tennis. The clinic, presented exclusively for the Victoria Park teams, was held at the Selborne Park Tennis Stadium from the 26th28th of March.

Tennis Tour to East London

The u/14 and u/15 Soccer teams toured to Bloemfontein for 3 days to participate in the Brebner High School Soccer Tournament, and won 9 out of the 11 match fixtures that they played. They also won the plate competition, and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Ons kan met trots sê dat dit “Beertjie” se tweede keer saam is Durban toe. Die vorige een was in 1984 toe een van ons eie onderwysers, T. Herbst as ‘n leerder gegaan het en dertig jaar later nou as die afrigter saam getoer het. “Beertjie” is in 1958 deur die eerste rugbyspan aan die skool geskenk en is steeds die gelukbringer. Ons het tuisgegaan te “Non Stop Adventures” in Pietermaritzburg, wat ‘n besonderse plek.

Die netbal en rugby het uitstekend gevaar waar hulle teen verskeie skole gespeel het. Die netbal het al ses hulle wedstryde gewen. Die rugby het twee gewen en een gelykop gespeel. Die leerders is op ‘n uitstappie na Ushaka Marine World waar hulle so bietjie kon ontspan en die verskillende “slides” geniet het. Dit was baie se eerste toer, nie net die leerders s’n nie, maar ook die onderwysers s’n. Ons sê dankie aan al ons borge wat die toer moontlik gemaak het. Die seisoen het begin en ons eerste rugbyspan wen DF Malherbe 22-13. Ons meisies en seuns is hard aan die oefen en elkeen sien uit na die volgende tuis wedstryd op 6 Mei teen Andrew Rabie.

This team will participate at the Continental Qualification Tournament for the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships.

1st XI Cricket breakfast

Pearson hosted their annual 1st XI Cricket breakfast last Thursday. After a very successful 2013/2014 season Josh Dodd and Kyle Jacobs were awarded top run scorer and top wicket taker awards for the season. Josh was also named as the Pearson Cricketer of the season.

Josh scored 801 runs at an average of 42,16 and also took 32 wickets at an average of 16,16. Kyle took 38 wickets at an average of 11,7. He also scored 610 runs at an average of 29.5. The Pearson 1st team won 77 present of their matches this season playing against all the top playing cricketing schools in the province.

Pearson Cricket

Pearson ended the cricket season with two good victories on Saturdays. It was the Pearson U/15A team who impressed as they recorded an impressive 295 run victory over Port Alfred in their 40 overs A-league fixture. Batting first, Pearson massed 376/2. Pearson opener, Bevan Potgieter, carried his bat as he scored 131 not out. Pearson captain Keeran Forbes top scored with 139 as the two put on 339 runs for the second wicket. It was Forbes’ second century of the year, after scoring his first against Victoria Park earlier in the term.

In reply, Pearson applied more pressure as Port Alfred were all out for 81. Brenden Basson was the pick of the Pearson Bowlers, recording figures of 5/42. He was well supported by Daniel Morris with 4/21. Pearson’s 1st Team was made to work hard as they took on a spirited Zwide Center of Excellence Team. After losing the toss and asked to bat first, Pearson scored 179/10 in their 50 over match. Dumisani Ncwembe was the pick of the Zwide bowlers with 3/28 in 10 overs. For Pearson, Kyle Jacobs top scored with 41. In reply, Zwide got off to a good start and were in control for most of the innings as they took their score to 120/3 with 20 overs to go. Pearson never gave up as their spinners, Mark Zonneveld (2/35 in 10 overs) and Deyano Klaasen (1/20 in 10 overs) got them back into the game.

Zwide needed 18 of the last 5 overs with 2 wickets in hand. Zonneveld then had a moment of brilliance in the field and with a diving stop and direct hit saw the visitors needing 9 runs of 9 balls. Pearson captain Josh Dodd took on the responsibility of bowling the last over and with 3 runs needed of 3 balls, he delivered the perfect yorker to hand Pearson an emphatic 2 run victory as Zwide was dismissed for 177. Dodd picked up 3/36 in 9,4 overs. Siyamthanda Gqibitole batted superbly well for the visitors with 61 of 83 balls.

Tennis

Kaylin Bower, a grade 8 learner at Pearson High School, is making her mark in the tennis world with a brilliant start to her high school career. Kaylin, sponsored by Prince and coached by the world renowned tennis star Yvonne Vermaak, started the 2014 season, participating in the TSA Keyhealth Super 7 series. She travelled to East London, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Stellenbosch. In East London, Kaylin made it to the semi-final of the singles and won the doubles title. In Port Elizabeth, she was runner up in the final and once again claimed the doubles title. Travelling to the Western Cape and Boland, the level of competition increased as the number of entries increased and temperatures was at times, unbearable. During the W.P. Slazenger Open in Cape Town, she won the singles title. During the Boland Keyhealth Super 7 Tournament in Stellenbosch, Kaylin was once again runner up in the final and won her fourth consecutive doubles title. At the end of the National tournament, Kaylin was selected as one of 6 players to represent South Africa in Scotland later this year. She is now also rated number two in her age group in the country!

Cricket – Pearson vs Alexander Road

Pearson’s captain and opening batsman Joshua Dodd, led his team to a comprehensive 102 run victory over traditional co-ed rivals, Alexander Road. Dodd, who offered a difficult chance early on in his innings, never looked back as he compiled a magnificent 134 in 142 balls to give the home team the edge.

Dodd was superb in leading the way as Pearson batted at a healthy rate compiling their 299/7 in the 50 over match. Dodd was well supported by Mark Zonneveld with 36 off 45 balls and then Kyle Jacobs with a well played 61 of 56 balls. Cody Roberts finished well for Pearson as he hit a quick fired 30 off 20 balls to set the visitors a daunting 300 for victory. For Alex, Adrian Baartjies picked up 3/65 in 9 overs and Sheldon Pillay bowled well and returned figures of 2/42 in 9 overs.

After lunch Pearson openings bowler, Wade van Zyl, bowled a good spell as the Alex batters found it difficult to score freely.

Van Zyl picked up 2/31 in his 10 overs. After the drinks break (25 overs- Alex 53/2) Alex batters batted well as they took their score to 197 before they were all out. Baartjies top scored for Alex with 49. He was well supported by Pillay with 48. Jacobs was Pearson’s top bowler and picked up 3/28 in 10 overs and Roberts returned figures of 2/25 in 6 overs as Pearson wrapped up a convincing 102 run victory.
