AWSUM News
rsdag
• Uitstekend! Julle is voorwaar AWSUM!!!
• I have just had the pleasure of reading your AWSUM newspaper! It is great!

Back to School Transitions
Dr. Demartini sê die volgende oor boelies: “If you’ve got a bully in your life and he’s pushing you around, it’s partly because you’re not guiding or governing your own life. You’re not empowered in that area. Once you empower that area, the bully disappears. If you don’t empower yourself, the bully just keeps coming in to toughen you up, to make you stronger so you empower that area. That bully is your hero because he is actually helping you empower yourself.”
Whether your child is starting school for the first time, beginning a new grade or attending a new school altogether, there are bound to be a number of feelings and behaviours at play. Perhaps your child is excited about their new learning environment and eager to make friends. Your child may also be feeling anxious about what to expect and how to cope with the changes that they are experiencing. Regardless of your child’s initial reaction, getting a new school year off to a good start can influence their attitude, confidence and performance, both socially and academically. The transition into a new school year may be a difficult one for children and parents alike. Even children who are eager to return to school must adjust to increased activity levels, staff and parental expectations and evolving peer relationships. The nature and degree of this adjustment may be influenced by your child’s age and personality as well as the school’s unique structures and routines. Parents are an important source of social support and can assist their children through the “back to school” transition by making use of some of the following suggestions: • A consistent daily routine can provide your child with a sense of structure and security. • Establishing a regular bed time will ensure that your child is well rested in the mornings. • Encourage your child to eat a healthy breakfast before school every day. • Writing down important details in your child’s diary, such as their locker combination, class room number, teacher’s name and timetable will help your child to remember this important information. • Making use of a wall calendar or personal planner will help both you and your child to keep track of test dates, assignment deadlines, extracurricular activities and special events. This will make your child’s commitments clear and provide you with an opportunity to plan ahead of time. • Your child may be tired at the end of the school day, try not to plan too many after-
school activities and ensure that they have enough time for rest and free-play. • Having your child pack their school books and homework diary into their school bag and lay out their school uniform the night before will help to prevent unnecessary stress, due to time constraints, in the morning. Although it is normal to be anxious in any new situation, some children may adjust to change better than others. Children who are distressed may be tearful, try to avoid going to school or have unexplained stomach and headaches. Encourage your child to discuss what is worrying them, let them know that you are confident that they can manage and find out what they think would help to make the situation easier. If you find that your child has difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings, it may be helpful to create a situation where the family as a whole is able to discuss their day. Sitting around a dinner table is an ideal way to allow children an opportunity to discuss their concerns. Each family member may be asked to share the best and worst parts of their day. If the worries continue, speak to your child’s teacher about your concerns and brainstorm the best way to help your child through this transition.
