QR (Quick Response) codes are popping up everywhere!

Perhaps you’ve seen them in magazines and on billboards. On a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt?

Well, it’s official. AWSUM now has them too!

Here’s how they work …

quick (hence the Q in QR) and easy way to link the physical world with the virtual world.

WHAT ARE QR CODES? Well, they are similar to normal barcodes you find on everyday products. QR codes are chunks of information encoded in a two-dimensional graphic.

Whereas a supermarket barcode consists of vertical lines, a QR code encodes info vertically and horizontally – so you can get more info on it. You scan QR codes with your mobile phone or tablet.

HOW DO YOU READ QR CODES? These are the two essential things you need to read a QR code: • a mobile smart phone or tablet with a camera • a piece of software called a QR reader: this you can download for free from most app stores.

• Open the QR reader app on your phone. Point your phone camera at the bar code and snap!

WHERE CAN YOU FIND QR CODES? A QR code might contain nutritional information on your breakfast cereal box. Or it can contain travel information at your bus stop, or a link to an online timetable. A code can be included on your business card, e.g. to include a direct link to your online CV, or links to resources such as an online video.

The independent, owner-managed language school was established in January 2006 by Shaun Fitzhenry, to tap into the growing Language Travel industry, in which people of all ages spend time in countries learning their chosen language while experiencing the tourist and cultural highlights on offer and practicing their skills in real-life situations. The school initially operated from his home with two expat students linked to VWSA, moved to Central after a year, and just under five years ago moved to Summerstrand, where they consistently host between 15 and 30 students.

“Most of our language travellers come here to learn or improve their English for a variety of reasons,” he says, “with some spending their annual holiday combining, for example, English with surfing, diving or golf lessons, while others study English for aviation and some prepare for international benchmark exams such as the Cambridge suite, IELTS or TOEFL, any of which are accepted at all major international universities as proof of their ability to communicate in English.

Vertical plants and gardens are all the rage at the moment. Try this fun, inexpensive and quick-to-make hanging pot plant and be sure to impress!

You will need: • plant, - thick rope, • round margarine tub or similar container with lid, • terracotta planter

Cut a big hole in the lid and a smaller hole in the bottom of the tub.

A TART WITH A DIFFERENCE!

Beetroot tart with baby rocket (serves 4)

This is such a simple tart, yet it always gets a “wow” from my guests because it looks so beautiful on a plate. If beetroot is not your favourite, use grilled tomatoes and basil.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry, 1 egg, beaten Topping 1 cup cream cheese ½ cup heavy cream juice of one lemon 4 large cooked beetroots, thinly sliced and patted dry Salad ¼ cup olive oil ½ tablespoon lemon juice salt and pepper 2 cups baby rocket ¼ cup Parmesan shavings WHAT TO DO: Preheat the oven to 200◦C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter.

Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf.

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the cheese mixture. Be sure that the beetroot slices are relatively dry so the pink juice does not run on to the white cream.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied it may leave you feeling angry, powerless, hurt or frustrated on their behalf. Here are some tips on what you can do to assist and support your child if he or she is being bullied at school: 1. Encourage your child to talk about their day and any significant events that may have taken place.

2. Take bullying seriously. Children often don’t report incidents of bullying as they feel ashamed, embarrassed or hopeless about what is taking place.

3. Empathize with your child. Tell him or her that bullying is wrong, that it is not his or her fault, and that you are glad that he or she has had the courage to tell you about it.

4. Help your child to be specific when describing bullying incidents: Who? What?

Where? When? Keep a record of incidents and look for patterns or evidence of repeated bullying behaviour.

5. Ask your child how he or she has tried to stop the bullying and how they would like you to help.

6. Check your own emotions. A parent’s protective instincts stir strong emotions.

Although it is difficult, step back and consider the next steps and the impact that they may have on your child carefully.

7. Treat the school as an ally. Share your concerns and specific information about bullying incidents with appropriate school personnel.

8. Teach your child non-violent ways to deal with bullies such as walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out.

9. Give your child positive feedback when they behave well in order to help build their selfesteem.

1. Tell your child to ignore the bullying.

2. Blame your child for the bullying or assume that your child did something to provoke the incident.

3. Confront the bully or members of the bully’s family as this will increase the likelihood of retaliation.

4. Encourage physical retaliation.

5. Criticise the way in which your child may have handled the bullying situation. It is often very difficult for children to know how best to respond.

6. Bully your children or bully others in front of them. Many children who are bullied at home react by bullying other children. If your child witnesses you hit, ridicule, or gossip about someone else, they are likely to model this behaviour with others.

It can be quite a shock when your child starts to swear. You might be wondering where your child learned that kind of language, and whether she really understands what she’s saying. How you react to your school-age child’s swearing now will influence her future swearing behaviour.

Why do school-age children swear?

Young children often swear because they’re exploring language. They might be testing a new word, perhaps to understand its meaning.

When school-age children swear, it’s usually to vent some negative feelings. It’s a response to something painful, upsetting or frustrating. Children might also swear to fit in socially. They might be trying to be part of the group, or to stand out by being funny or adding shock value to their talk.

Children might also be imitating others when they swear.

What to do: immediate action Speak to your child about his choice of words, rather than ignoring his behaviour .

Your child might or might not fully understand a swear word’s meaning. But school-age children do understand that words can hurt or offend others.

Your reaction will influence

whether your child swears again.

Stay calm and explain clearly that the word your child used is not acceptable. This will go a long way towards preventing future swearing.

Should I explain what the word means?

School-age children can benefit from a simple explanation, depending on the individual child. If you think your child might have some understanding of the meaning of the word, you can ask her what she thinks the word means. Then use general terms to explain why it’s not appropriate.

For example, you could say, ‘That is a word for private body parts.

We don’t use it like that in our family’.

• Be aware of what your child watches, listens to and plays with. That means supervising TV, movies and other multimedia and music. It’s a good idea to have the computer and TV in a part of the house where you can easily see them.

When your child pushes the boundaries Some children will keep pushing the boundaries after being told not to. If you find yourself in this situation, try the

following strategies: • If your child’s swearing is abusive and directed at others, clearly state that you will not tolerate this kind of behavior • If swearing is one of several inappropriate behaviours that your child shows, you might consider seeking help from a child health professional such as a psychologist or school counsellor.

Where did my child hear that word?

Children pick up swear words from many sources, outside and inside the home. Almost half of parents in a recent survey reported that they believe that their children learned to swear from the parents themselves.

This isn’t too surprising – more than 40% of the parents surveyed said they swear every day.

Even 19% of parents who said they don’t swear themselves believe that their children learned

to swear from parents.

This suggests there are quite a few Australian families where one parent has more colourful language than the other.

But not all children learn from their parents. Research suggests that exposure to swear words on TV can lead to an increase in swearing in children. Friends and peers will also influence your child. Children will pick up new words as their social circle expands to include playmates, school friends and older children.

Other facts about swearing Studies on brain damage affecting the language areas of the brain have found that some people who have lost the ability to speak, or struggle to form words, can still swear easily. This is thought to be because swearing is processed in a different area of the brain.

The club is 10 years old this year and is open to all Grade 6 and 7 pupils. We meet on a weekly basis. These pupils are taught about Service above Self. At the beginning of winter the club collected and distributed clothes and blankets to Sister Ethel Normoyle at the Missionvale Care Centre.

After enjoying coffee and muffins in the hall, dads had the chance to visit their children in their classrooms. Here, Nathan Naidoo happily shares his desk with his dad.

Walmer West Paul Young visit Paul Young, better known to us as Small Paul (at 2017cm tall) draws as he speaks to young children throughout South Africa – the good news message that young and old understand and enjoy. His chalk talks have a big impact on improving the behaviour of learners. High School and Primary School learners love it when he shows up. It was great to have had him at our school and we cannot wait for his return next year.

Hoërskool Cillié se skoolkoor bestaan uit +-45 leerders. Hul tree gereeld op en het onlangs by die Voce Volante in die Veremarksaal gesing. In Augustus sing hulle by die PE Kunsfees asook die “Choir of all Choirs Competition” waar hulle laas jaar hul afdeling, asook die prys vir beste Afrikaanse lied vir Hoërskole gewen het.

Die musiek leerders het puik vertoon by die onlangse Despatch Kunsfees.

Shavonn Fredericks en Gayleen Wesso het elk ‘n silwer diploma in blokfluit gekry.

Amilda Manuel het goud gekry en was ook genooi om by die Prestige-aand op te tree waar sy ‘n spesiale toekenning vir haar blokfluitspel gekry het.

Samuel Connelly is ‘n baie talentvolle sokkerspeler wat vanjaar in Brittanje (Engeland) sy vaardighede in sokker gaan uitstraal. Hierdie leerder was die geleentheid aangebied om aan te sluit by die Leeds United Soccer Academy Program. Ons is trots op jou Samuel en dat jy die geleentheid met albei hande gegryp het. Hy was nog vanjaar ‘n Cillié leerders in Gr11A. Hierdie leerling wys dat Hoërskool Cillié wenners kweek.

Most recently, JESSICA MANDEL, in Grade 11, was elected Junior Mayor and will take up

this most significant role in August. Jess said she has always felt privileged to attend Theodor Herzl and aware of the gap in South African education.

SIVUYILE TSHEFU, Gr 11, was one of 14 high scholars who took over AlgoaFM on 16 June “in the name of all youth in South Africa”. Sivu had enjoyed a work shadow day at the studio and she so impressed the DJs that they invited her to come back as a newsreader on the spirited ‘takeover’ team.

“Not many people can say that they’ve spoken to over 626 000 people about something as informative as news while still managing to hold their audience’s attention!” Sivu said. “It was not only a learning experience, but also one of the most fun coup d’état ever undertaken in Port Elizabeth. I couldn’t be more honoured to have taken part in it.”

Pearson utilized the wind well in the first half pinning Graeme College down in their own twenty two of the field. SOCCER In the first week of the holidays, the u/19 Soccer squad competed in a schools tournament organised by SA Sports Tours in East London. The tournament was spread over 3 days and the Pearson boys played some excellent football. The results are as follows: Our first game was against Thomas More College from Durban. It was a game which was dominated by Pearson but we didn’t take proper advantage of our opportunities and disappointingly drew 2-2. The second match was against Kimberly Boys High. This was a great match and it showed the boys’ character because they had to equalise twice to stay in the match and ultimately scored a winning goal to win 3-2. The 3rd match was against Bergvliet High School from Cape Town. Pearson were in total control for most of this game and ended up winning 4-1. Well done to Dillon Middleton, who scored all 4 goals in this game! The 4th game was the only game that Pearson lost in the tournament, a disappointing 3-0 loss to George Sports Academy. 1st Team Girls Hockey Report The Pearson 1st Girls Hockey, the only team from the Eastern Cape team, travelled to Cape Town to take part in a prestigious and well organized “Cape Town International Hockey Tournament” from 22-28 July. 22 Teams from across the globe took part in the tournament.

The Pearson team was up to every challenge that came their way, by giving a very good display of hockey. At the end of the round robin matches, Pearson was placed 1st in their pool, ensuring them of a quarter final match against Bloemhof.

The girls once again did not disappoint, winning the match 2-0 for a place in the semis against Millfield from England.

The Pearson girls lost the match 1-2 against a very strong team, but won the 3rd/4th place match against Springfield 1-0 to earn them a well-deserved bronze medal.

Dillon Middleton and Hewan Palmer scored absolutely brilliant goals in this game but Strelizia are a very strong side and they fought hard to earn a 2-2 draw. Disappointingly, we lost out on a semi – final place purely because of goal difference but it was encouraging to hear from a lot of the other schools there that we deserved to be in the semi’s. We ended up in 5th position out of 11 schools. Dillon Middleton was awarded Top Goal scorer of the tournament as well as Player of the Tournament, a fantastic achievement.

Pearson Learners Embark On Fitness Programme Pearson High School learners are following a conditioning programme during the June school holidays in an effort to maintain and improve their conditioning levels. After a long June school exam and a three week holiday, the Pearson learners are working hard to start the last part of the season in top condition. Pearson had good successes during the first part of the season and are looking to maintain their record.

The programme, designed by Pearson biokeneticist Brink Eksteen, consist

of a three week training programme.

Learners can choose from three different difficulty levels according to their own ability.

The programme promises to improve conditioning levels of the beginner to the advanced, very fit athlete. Pearson learners, as well as the public, also has the opportunity to take part in a fitness challenge run by Brink Eksteen from the Pearson Sport Science Institute during the three week break. Daily prizes are up for grabs for all involved!

Victoria Park High Junior Act visits the Coega Door of Hope every third week where the pupils are given the opportunity to mentor a child. The pupils love interacting with the children and it is their way of giving back to the community.

The De Beers English Olympiad 2014 winners were announced and VP was proud to announce that Pierre Durandt and Taryn Benade came in 5th and 8th place respectively.

Hockey Nicky Veto represented the EP U18a hockey team at the inter provincial tournament recently. The quad played seven matches and Nicky scored three of the goals. It is her first year u18 and to be included in the SA u18b side is a phenomenal achievement. Well done, Nicky!

Touring from the UK Victoria Park High School hosted the touring Newport Free Grammar School from the UK.

Congratulations to Grade 12 Dramatic Arts Learner, Taryn Benade, as well as Chantelle Whitehouse (Matric 2013) for not only having their original theatrical scripts selected for production, but also having had their plays chosen as two of the top four plays in the Eastern Cape performing Arts theatre projects, under the auspices of PANSA (Performing Arts Network of South Africa). An incredible achievement for Victoria Park High School.

These plays will be staged at the Savoy Theatre from Wednesday, 30 July to Saturday, 2 August .

Vanaf 7 tot 10 Julie het 40 van Framesby se landloopatlete aan die Knysna Oester-hardloopfees deelgeneem. Die atlete het aan ‘n landloopbyeenkoms, ‘n 4 x 1km-aflos, ‘n pretdraf en ‘n straatmyl deelgeneem. Skole van regoor die Oos-Kaap en Wes-Kaap het deelgeneem. Die kompetisie was baie sterk, veral die plaaslike SWD-atlete is in klas van hul eie.

Ten spite van die strawwe kompetisie het Framesby tog hul stempel in veral die aflos afgedruk. Vyf van ons 10 aflosspanne het onder die eerste drie geëindig, nl die dogters o/15 A en B, die o/17 en o/19 gemengde spanne en die seuns o/19 span. In die straatmyl het 6 atlete prysgeld verower terwyl Vicky Oelofse en Chine Petzer albei ‘n derde plek in die dogters o/15 en o/19 afdeling onderskeidelik behaal het. DF Malherbe 1st team boys play against English School An English team of England, The John Hampden Grammar School of Boys came to visit Port Elizabeth as part of their tour to South Africa. Riegardt Pienaar, DF Malherbe’s high school’s captain, said that they really enjoyed the match. “John Hampden play really good hockey together as a team, and

it is their great passing that made them win the match.” For a school like DF it was a huge opportunity to learn about a different culture of players with a different background than us normal South African learners. The learners are really thankfull for this and they look forward in playing against a team like this before.

DF Malherbe supported the Reach for a Dream foundation’s “Reach for your Slippers Day” on Friday, 1 August. Staff and pupils joined in and paid R10 each to wear their slippers to school.
