PEARSON HIGH SCHOOL (t) 041 583 2111 (e) phs@pearsonhs.ecape.school.za
PEARSON VS NICO MALAN
Pearson hosted Nico Malan in a tightly contested fixture in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The Pearson hockey teams dominated on the Astro. It was one-way traffic as the Pearson 1st Boys’ team recorded an emphatic 14-0 victory. André Potgieter led the way with 6 goals, followed by Captain Meldon Clark with 4 goals. The Pearson 1st Girls’ hockey team continued to impress with a 9-0 victory over Nico Malan. Pearson striker Ongi Mali, was the star of the day leading for the front to set up most of the scoring opportunities for her team. Lise de Villiers and Caitlyn Gouws was once again in top form holding the midfield together, distributing good ball for Mali. Nico Malan emerged victors in most netball matches played on the day, but all the matches were closely contested with draws and matches often won or lost by a goal or two. The two first netball teams played to a thrilling 19-19 draw in a truly
great local School`s netball match. Two netball teams, evenly-matched, going at it thrust and parry veritably until the final whistle, spurred on by a vociferous crowd in windy, cold conditions. The final whistle brought to a conclusion a match drawn 19-all. In the first quarter, a rampant Pearson led 2-7. In the second, a total turning of the tables as a revitalised Nico Malan slowly narrowed the gap to 10-8 to Pearson. In the third quarter the Pearson substitutes helped maintaining the narrow lead of 18-16 to Pearson. A strong finish from the Nico Malan team in the 4th Quarter levelled the score by the final whistle. In a titanic battle in the 1st XV match, Nico Malan started strongest and scored two converted tries early in the game to lead by 14-0. Pearson replied with two penalties by centre Duwayne Baartman to bring the score to 6-14 at half time. Pearson showed why they could hold their own against some of the best teams
in the country by doing most of the play in the second half. Three tries by the home side and only one by the visitors saw a see-saw battle in the second half with only the boot of Nico Malan scrumhalf Bendre Jonck separating the teams in a nail biting finish. Nico Malan won the game 27-25. OTHER SCORES (PEARSON SCORES FIRST) GIRLS’ HOCKEY

The Selfie Culture: Should We Be Worried? You can hardly go onto Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site without being inundated with selfies. A recent study found that a 91% of teens have reportedly posted a photo of themselves online. With this kind of statistic, odds are that your teen has already taken and posted at least one of these instant self-portraits. For most teens, selfies are a harmless bit of adolescent fun, no more dangerous than other passing fads. Actual damage by selfie is rare, but it does happen. As a parent, you need to be aware of these risks and become equipped to discuss them with your teen. SELFIES AND SELF-ESTEEM One risk factor for selfies is that the act and obsession with taking them can lead teens to the development of poor self-esteem. There has been some speculation about whether self-portraits help or hurt self-esteem. Out of the few studies that have been conducted on the matter, the verdict on the effects of selfies on teen self-esteem is somewhat conflicting. A body image survey conducted by the TODAY Show found that 65% of teen girls feel that selfies boost their self-confidence. 40% of them agreed that social media helps them put their best face forward. However, 53% of respondents alleged that photos of themselves that are posted by others can make them feel bad. Earlier this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t leave the house for six months because he was devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures. Eventually, he attempted suicide by overdose. The chances are pretty good that your teen is not as ill as this young man was, but, while rare, the case demonstrates how poor self-esteem can be exacerbated by the selfie trend. The danger is very real and is something that should be on every parent’s radar.
By Steven Woda www.uknowkids.com
a negative effect on your child’s online reputation. Both the quantity and subject matter of photos that are shared with friends on Facebook can impact the level of support and intimacy within their relationships. Additionally, the permanence of anything that is posted online, like selfies, can haunt a teen years after they’re taken. Although there are a few ways kids can make the social networks they use more protected, there is never a guarantee that something won’t go viral once it is posted or merely sent to one person. College admissions officers and scholarship foundations now often include a search on social media for prospective students. Many employers have started looking up a job applicant’s online presence and factoring that information into their hiring decisions. That car-surfing stunt a teen photographed in his first year of college may be years in the past. But to an employer, what does that say about the job applicant’s judgment and self-control? He doesn’t know how long ago that picture was taken or how much your teen has changed in the intervening time; he only knows what the photo tells him. SELFIE SAFETY TIPS: 1.) Teach teens early on that selfies, social media posts, and the feedback they receive on social media should not be tied to their self-worth. 2.) Ensure that your teens are using proper privacy settings throughout their social media accounts 3.) Instruct your kids to be careful about the personal settings and items that are featured in selfies. 4.) Advise teens to only post selfies (or anything on social media) that they would be comfortable sharing with the world.
GETTING READY FOR SPRING DIY: TEACUP BIRD-FEEDER Spring is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to venture back into my garden. I don’t have much in the way of a green thumb, so I’ve decided to have some fun that doesn’t involve planting anything. I’ve found an idea online that I’d love to share with you: What better way to welcome back all our feathered friends than with this adorable teacup bird-feeder? WHAT YOU NEED: • A cup and saucer • Wild bird seed • Super-adhesive glue • String WHAT TO DO: Make sure the cup and saucer are clean and dry. Squeeze some of the glue on to the edge of the saucer, tip the cup over on its side, and place it on the glue. This will need to set for about 24 hours before you hang it outside. Once it’s dry, all you have to do is pour in the bird seed and hang up the feeder.
SELFIES AND YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION As with all online and social media activities, posting selfies can have

AN “AWSUM” GESTURE!
On June 24th, the same day that South Africans celebrated and remembered their historic win of the Rugby World Cup, twenty years ago, Herbert Hurd staff celebrated their own historic, sports-related event. At a gala evening in the school’s sports pavilion, the headmaster, Mr Glenn Harris, surprised and delighted his staff by presenting a large part of his personal collection of sports memorabilia to the school. The collection, which has been mounted and framed, will now adorn the walls of the ‘Hurdian”, the school’s sports pavilion. Glenn Harris’s passion for all things sporting started as a young lad when he had a poster of his hero, H. O. de Villiers, above his bed. His interest in sports grew and, during his years as a teacher and sports coach, he collected ties, caps and jerseys, some of which were earned through his own sporting achievements. Mr Harris, who has been the headmaster at Herbert Hurd for 18 years, and who has a great affection for his “little green school”, felt it fitting that his collection enjoy a permanent home at Herbert Hurd, where it will be enjoyed and appreciated by many generations of future Hurdians.
Pointing out some of the particularly interestig items in his collection of caps.

It’s the dazzling details that count when celebs hit the red carpet. Same applies to you. This year it’s all glitz and glamour, get the look with showers of shimmer and when in doubt, settle on silver. It’s classic and classy and goes with just about everything. What more can you wish for? CHAIN GANG If you’re wearing your hair down or halfup make your Matric look romantic and dreamy with a jewelled hair chain or sparkly headpiece that cascades onto your forehead like an exotic princess. Just remember, this shimmery accessory is the focus, so go for understated earrings that won’t compete for attention. IN YOUR CLUTCHES Without a doubt the winning evening bag is the clutch. Flat or boxy, envelope or pouchy, it’s the choice of every A-lister and adds that unmistakable flash of fashion flair to any evening dress.

COLLEGIATE GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL (t) 041 373 7705 (e) collegia@cghs.co.za
67 BLANKETS MULTIPLIES TO 240! Collegiate Girls’ High School embraced the national project of 67 blankets for their 67 minutes of service for Mandela. After much knitting of squares by all the girls and staff in the school as well Moms, Grans and perhaps some Dads too, 240 blankets were finally assembled. Today the girls had a special assembly at which the piles of blankets were displayed and a group of girls who knitted the most squares have gone down to handover the blankets to the following homes: Cleary Park Cheshire home ( for paraplegics and quadriplegics. ); Adcock Home for the Aged and the Elizabeth Stuurman Home for the Aged. This a true reflection of Collegiate’s motto: Facta Non Verba – Deeds not words.

‘“When you strike a woman, you strike a rock!” It is something we as Collegiate girls must continue to do – stand up for the truth and stand against injustice.’ These are the words that current Head Girl, Meghan Derry, ended her address to the girls last week on the privilege that it is to celebrate Women’s Day and Women’s month. As Collegiate is a girls-only school, we are particularly conscious of the important role that women play in South African society. So many past Collegiate girls have stood up for truth and justice and fought for justice for all. We honour those girls each day we do the same.
