A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S WHAT TO DO

3

As the nights get colder, the duvets and heaters aren’t the only things being hauled out, as people across the country reach for the tissues to soothe those inevitable winter sniffles. TELLING THE DIFFERENCE The perennial confusion between the common cold and influenza is due to the fact that the symptoms are so similar: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and body aches. For the record, colds are caused by viruses, and there are often at least 200 of them circulating during cold and flu season. By contrast, there’s usually only one influenza virus in circulation every year, according to health experts. The best indications that you’re dealing

with a cold and not the flu are severity and duration: Colds typically last between three and seven days and generally aren’t very serious. IS THE FLU SERIOUS? If the treatment for colds and the flu is typically the same, why is it important to know whether you’ve got one or the other? Because the flu has much greater potential to lead to pneumonia in certain high-risk people. Those people include the

elderly, those with chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and chronic bronchitis), and those with auto-immune deficiencies. Pneumonia should be suspected if flu symptoms suddenly worsen, if a fever suddenly spikes higher, or if someone experiences shortness of breath. A healthcare provider should be called immediately if such symptoms develop. PREVENTION THE BEST MEDICINE The best way to protect against the flu and

pneumonia is to get a flu shot. To reduce your risk of contracting colds and the flu even further, there’s always good old hand-washing, says Fields. “Regularly washing your hands is highly important, whether you have a cold or are trying to avoid getting one,” according to Fields. “If you’re the infected person, you also need to make sure to cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze so that you’re not spreading it that way.” Source: www.health24.com

‘INSECT DAY’

Learning about insects took a fun turn at Herbert Hurd this week when the grade three pupils enjoyed ‘Insect Day’. The children dressed up as their favourite insect and spent the day doing insect –related activities.

FUN RUN

FATHERS’ DAY

In celebration of Fathers’ Day, the dads of Herbert Hurd pupils were invited to a Coffee and Muffin morning where they had a chance to chat and get to know one another. They also had the opportunity to listen to the school band play and to take part in a fun general knowledge quiz. Afterwards they could pay a visit to their sons and daughters in their classrooms.

The weather did not play along, but the Herbert Hurd Fun Run still managed to be a great success, thanks to the large number of gallant walkers and runners who turned up – in spite of the cold and wet! Hundreds of pupils, moms, dads, brothers and sisters marched through the drizzle – showing true Herbie spirit!

Grade one pupil, Coby Plaatjies, shows his dad how to use the mouse.

Nikita Bothma is delighted Layla Jonker introduces to have her dad visit her at her dad to the computer school. laboratory.

Umbrellas, jackets and beanies were the order of the day, but spirits remained high as the Hurdian family strode out in the rain and cold.

DIY KEYS FRAME.

076 463 6391 / 082 824 5136

I love it when practical things are pretty! This month, why don’t you try and make one of these DIY key frames, which just happen to be both! And, it’s so simple. THINGS YOU WILL NEED: • A frame that you like – it can be any size, but we recommend one of which the gap in the center is slightly larger than your keys • A screw driver with appropriate size screw (the box of screw hooks will tell you which size). • Screw hooks.

WHAT TO DO: Take your frame and plan out where you’d like your hooks to be placed. I decided to use four hooks for my frame. Once decided, drill correct sized holes into the frame. After holes are drilled, screw in each hook, and you’re ready to mount on wall and hang keys! Yes, it’s that easy!

DARK CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU The grade 6’s studied the labelling of various brands of chocolate and the health benefits of dark chocolate containing 70 to 85 % of cocoa. This is what they learnt. It can help prevent heart disease: Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which protect cells from harmful molecules— called free radicals—that are produced when the body breaks down food or is exposed to sunlight or smoke. Free radicals

can cause cell damage that leads to heart disease. Flavonoids can also lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol by up to 10 percent. It improves your mood: Dark chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that bring on feelings of pleasure. It also contains the chemical serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant.
