AWSUM Celebrity Interview V You released the album ‘Sing vir Liefde’ earlier this year and signalled a new direction with this album. What is different about your music on this album? A I wrote the majority of songs on this album mysefl. I could write what I had on the heart. Every album is about your life and in which place in your life you are at that stage. V You are the sister of the equally well-known and popular Bobby van Jaarsveld and performed with him on stage as guitar player and on background vocals. You also did a duet with him on his first album. What made you decide to go solo? Do you still perform together these days?

K arlien van Jaarsveld

Double SAMA-winner, television star and actress Karlien van Jaarsveld had a meteoric rise in the Afrikaans entertainment industry. AWSUM News chatted to her about her career, her children, and her dreams for the future.

A It is a road that God chose, and not me. We do not often perform together, but when we do, we enjoy it.

V Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up and went to school. A I remember that as children my brother and I always made the family sit down to watch us perform shows. It must be there where the music bug bit me. We moved around quite a bit, so I was in a number of schools, with most of my growing-up years spent in Brits and Witbank. V Your rise in the music industry was fast and successful. In 2011 you won the Best Newcomer award in the Tempo Awards. You were also awarded two SAMAs for Best Pop Album (Afrikaans) in 2014 (‘Uitklophou’) and 2016 (‘My Hartjie’). Tell us a bit more about these two albums and their success stories. A In my wildest dreams I would never have expected this. I always had a really good support team. What also helped a lot, is that people believed in me. V Your interests and talents are wide and varied. You have acted in films, performed on stage, and even won ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Season 8. Which of these non-music things do you enjoy the most? A I like being in film. You can sometimes play a character that is completely the opposite of yourself. I like a challenge. But one of the roles I enjoy the most these days, is to be a wife to my husband and a mother to my children. V You are the mom of two twin boys, Daniël and Eliah, with another little one on the way. How did motherhood change your life? What is the best thing about being a mom? How do you balance your career, marriage and motherhood? A It is one of the most amazing gifts that we as people can receive. Just to be with them every day and to see how they develop, is wonderful (but it happens too fast!). I am at home during the week and can spend time with them after school and during the evenings. They also regularly go on tour with me. Sometimes it feels as if I learn more from them than they from me.

A To spend time with my children and my husband.

V What is your advice for a first date?

V What was the highlight of your career so far? Why?

A Just be yourself.

A The opportunity to do ‘In jou skoene’, because it dealt with the things that really matter in life.

V Favourite pastime (when you get time)?

V What advice about love and life do you have for our high school learners? A Remember to just be yourself – it can sometimes feel awkward to be yourself and it could take years before you realise that to be yourself would always have been the best thing.

GLENWOOD HOUSE SCHOOL

(t) 044 871 4643 (e) debbie.symes@glenwoodhouse.co.za

Using technology to tackle waste Glenwood House Environment Society are employing information technology to motivate a powerful waste reduction message. The eco-school club makes use of Instagram and Facebook to spread their #zerowaste message. Grade 9 students learned about the dangers of plastic debris on marine life during a grade camp to the Goukamma Nature Reserve. In the space of a few short minutes the group collected a bag full of trash from the beach. The plastic items included a Barbie doll, plastic drinking straws and lollipop sticks. Plastic waste, they learned from Cape Nature Ranger Eugene van Reenen, can choke marine birds, suffocate turtles, fish and fill the digestive tracts of fish and whales. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, if current trends continue there may be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050! The Enviro Society posted a photo of their plastic haul on social media. The image was seen, commented on and reposted hundreds of times. The students were spurred to action and decided to step up their recycling campaign and implement a ‘refuse the straw policy’ at the school tuck shop. Instead of removing plastic drinking straws outright, they began to reeducate the student body about the dangers of single-use plastics. The Enviro Society spread the message during a whole school assembly, where they showed a shocking viral internet

Page 6

AWSUM NEWS JULY 2017

video of scientists in Costa Rica who helped an injured sea turtle by removing a 10 cm plastic straw from its nostril! Amber Bird and Robert Hill, senior members of the campaign group, reminded students that the first line of defence in tackling waste is to ‘refuse’ unnecessary or single use plastic items like straws, coffee cup lids, plastic bags and plastic cutlery. The duo also encouraged the Glenwood student body to ‘reduce’ general plastic consumption by employing alternate ‘recyclable’ materials like wood, glass and bamboo. Where no non-plastic alternative is available, students can ‘re-use’ items. All organic material should be placed in a compost bin to ‘rot’. These are known as the 5 R’s of ZEROWASTE. Technology teacher, Mrs Adri Griffiths, showed the group how the 3D printer could be employed to make biodegradable ‘green plastic’ straws as reusable alternatives to single-use straws. The Enviro Society will now investigate how long this PLA plastic takes to biodegrade in an in-depth research project. In addition, they are rolling out a pilot composting system for Glenwood House School in addition to their school-wide recycling programme. The group will employ Facebook and Instagram to publicise their success and promote a beach clean-up campaign during the Summer Term.
