Spring is officially here, and what could be more suitable than celebrating with an entire month dedicated to South African’s favourite pastime – having a BRAAI! Whether you’re doing it on your stoep in Strandfontein, or on your patio in Pretoria. Or at your mother’s brother’s uncle’s house in Kraaifontein. There’s nothing better than the smell of a chop sizzling on the coals. And as an extra bonus … WE GET THE DAY OFF!!! Our government set this day aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage. Browsing on the internet, I’ve stumbled onto braai.com, whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day.

They’ve also shared a list of fun braai words, almost like a braai-dictionary to help you sound cool around the fire: 1. Aai: a braai in the summer aka – a braai without the brrrr! 2. Abbraaiviation: a very short braai. 3. Abraaimowitz: a Jewish braai. 4. Asskebab: If somebody makes an ass of himself/herself at a braai you call them an Asskebab. 5. Aweh: various meanings and can be widely used to express something positive e.g. hello, yes, nice, good.
6. Baas: Afrikaans for boss, the guy holding the braai tongs. 7. Bak: a dish, made from aluminum or stainless steel, used for storing the meat in before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern in this. When you eat straight off of the braai, then a bak is unnecessary. 8. Barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. What you learn to call a braai when you immigrate there. 9. Black wattle: Alien vegetation that uses a lot of water when alive. Good for the environment to chop it down and braai with it. Versatile braai wood, burns easily when dry, and makes decent coals. 10. Blitz: Although this is a brandname, it is used as a universal term in South Africa for fire lighters of any kind or brand. A frequently asked question at many a braai: “where is the blitz?” 11. Blitzbraai: When you light the blitz intending to braai but instead just end up getting blitzed sonder a braai. 12. 13. Boerie: abbreviation for
boereworsroll. 14. Bokdopentjop (bok-dop-en-tjop) – ‘bring and braai’ – you may bring your bok (babe), your dop (drinks) and tjop (meat of choice). 15. Bosberaad: a conference. You and your friends coming together to discuss your strategy for National Braai Day. 16. Braai hard: 90′s action movie about a really rough guy who braais a lot. 17. Braai hijacker: the guy that you don’t really want to invite to your braai, but have too. Cause he is someone’s boyfriend. He claims to be a chef and manages to hi-jack the braai when the real braaier goois a dop. 18. Braai tongs: Weapon of choice for the braai master. 19. Braaiathon: a very long braai 20. Braaidsmaid: Female performing supporting role during a braai. E.g. making salad, marinating meat, making braaibroodjies. GRILLED GRAPE FRUITS
At the very start of spring the grape fruit is in full swing.
I started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating. The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day.
WHAT YOU NEED: • 3 grapefruits • 2 tbls brown sugar (approx) WHAT TO DO: • Set the oven to grill and place a rack in the middle shelf.
• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling. • If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments. • Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up,and GET THIS sprinkle each BOOK!

3D printing is all the rage these days, but for now, it’s mostly centered around little plastic doo-dads. The MINK, is a bit different.
This little printer lets users choose any color on the web, or in the real world, and using simple already-existing software, print that color into a blush, eye shadow, lip gloss or any other type of makeup. See, most makeup comes from the same basic substrates, from high-end labels like Chanel all the way down to the cheap stuff available at drug stores. Founder Grace Choi sources the same substrate for the Mink so that users can turn any image into any kind of makeup. The idea here is that consumers are increasingly focused on instant gratification and DIY solutions. Choi also noticed that makeup consumers aren’t always loyal to certain brands, but rather focused on convenience. With Mink, users can satisfy the desire for instant gratification while still having access to any color in the world at an affordable price. Simply choose a color on a website, Pinterest board, or snap one with your phone in the real world, and use any color picker to locate the hex code of the color. Once you have the code, you can put it into any other program like Photoshop or Paint and simply press print. The company is targeting the younger, 13-21 demographic who are less ingrained in their habits with certain brands and retailers. Currently, the Mink is still a prototype, which is set to retail at $300 (approx. R3000) and although the prices of the ink and raw materials aren’t available yet, we totally think Grace Choi is on to something big. What would you want to print first? Your own eyeshadow? Or what about a blusher? The options are endless.

Sometimes life throws you some old tiles and then you have two options: live with it, or paint and stamp it! Save yourself a heap of cash by opting for this very clever stamp that can be used in any number of ways. My kitchen had been in desperate need of a tiled splash-back because unlike most old homes, I wasn’t blessed with horrid old kitchen tiles.
4. Use grout to fill in the spaces and let it dry for a couple of hours.
1.Cut 16 mm chip board to the size you want your panel to be, minus 2.5 mm on all 4 sides. This will ensure that the tiles hang over the wood a little bit to create a nice shadow line.
6. Then STAMP
2. Fix 2 mirror fixings to the back — it’s easier to do this first otherwise you risk breaking a tile or two. 3. The stamp size is 150 mm x150mm so I used some very inexpensive white tiles to the same size. Fix the tiles to the panel using a tile adhesive, leaving a 2 mm space between them.
5. Prime the tiles with a standard tile primer — there are many brands on the market — and then let it cure for 24 hours.
7. After the pattern had dried for a couple of hours, you’ll need to seal it with a craft sealer like Harlequin Paint’s Decorator’s Varnish. It’s a clear coat that will ensure that you can wipe down the tiles when they get wet or dirty. GET YOUR STAMPS FROM: D&M made with love, there are 3 standard designs available. They would also be happy to custom design a pattern! dmmadewithlove@hotmail.co.za
Amper soos as jy sandkastele bou.
