STEPS TOWARDS S U S TA I N A B L I T Y

As a front-runner in the furniture design field, Zuiver feels it’s our responsibility to minimise our environmental and social footprint by exploring alternative materials and production methods. Last year, we sold over 350,000 products worldwide. Every single product we design and sell has some connection to natural resources. “When we design, we design for the future – not only in how our products look, but also the wider impact they have. We need to rethink the decisions we make when it comes to resources. As a mum of three, I want my children and future grandchildren to grow up in the same world as I did.” – Caroline van Velze, Creative Director

FIRST STEPS We are not a sustainable brand. Up until now, Zuiver has taken first steps towards sustainability. Our global HQ is generating 30% of its own energy through solar panels, and within the coming years we are aiming for this to be 100%. We introduced the first sustainable product designs in our collection. In 2019, we presented our Thirsty chair, made of upcycled PET bottles. In 2021, we introduced a new conscious edition of our iconic Albert Kuip chair series, a bioplastic version containing 45% coffee residue. In our new fall/winter collection we introduce several new conscious designs; like the Good Plastic desk that is made of 100% recycled plastic and produced in the Netherlands, the Fan floorlamp that is made of renewable materials as bamboo and jute, and our Scape pillow series containing recycled denim and PET yarns.

HELLO 2030 However, this is just the beginning. In 2030 we want to cut back the use of virgin- and non-renewable materials significantly in our collection. We are ready to make new choices in order to treat our planet with the utmost respect and to minimise our footprint. We believe that every step towards the goal counts just as much as the goal itself – and it’s this progress that’s one of our continued points of focus. In fact, our brand got its name from the Dutch word for “pure”; and it’s with a pure (or transparent) sensibility that we begin our ongoing journey towards sustainability. ALBERT KUIP COFFEE CHAIR The world drinks a lot of coffee. Over 2.25 billion cups are consumed daily worldwide and this produces an enormous amount of waste. This coffee residue is used for the shell of our iconic Albert Kuip chair, containing 42.5% coffee waste. But there is more. In our Albert Kuip chair series, we use natural oak wood legs, but when there is a discolouration or knot, we unfortunately have to reject and destroy that copy. But we found a solution: we now simply paint these misfits black and use them for this chair. So there you have it: our most sustainable chair so far.

The shell of this pretty chair is made out of upcycled PET bottles that are saved from landfills in China. China is struggling with a huge amount of single-use plastic waste. Every chair contains up to 60 to 100 PET bottles. This design chair, frame included, is 100% recyclable and renewable. Now there you have a great bottle story! The Thirsty chair is the first action in Zuiver’s sustainability mission; an initiative to minimize our environmental and social footprint by exploring alternative materials and production methods.

Today we give you more options for creating a home office or workspace that merges design and sustainability. The Good Plastic desk is designed in collaboration with The Good Plastic Company. This slender and elegant desk is fashioned from recycled plastic made from camera spools. These spools are broken down into chips, melted and pressed in a panel, which gives its unique colour and marble pattern, also known as marble of the 21st century. There is no adding of additives to the process, which makes the desk fully circular and can be therefore reused. The frame is made of steel, and it has a steel compartment to store your laptop, making it your ideal home-office partner.

Are you picking up on that pleasant 80s vibe from pendant lamp Rani? We love it! This beauty was created in collaboration with young designer Jasmijn Muskens, whom we invited for our scholarship programme. Jasmijn likes to draw inspiration from the Memphis style, which also emerges in Rani. Rani comes in a pink version which hides the light source when not in use, and in a tinted glass version which gives the light source an aesthetic function.
