Spring 2019 thesis proposal | revitalizing ingenious architecture in rural environments
This thesis is about the exploration of biophilic and biomimicry and its relation to Indigenous design thinking, in particular, exploring synergies between nature, place and the Navajo way of being. The focus will be on Native American housing in rural parts of the Navajo Reservation, where current living situations range from lack of water, electricity and poor insulated homes. All of which have an impact on education and health of the families living in these conditions. This thesis will cover a combination of a western design methodology and a non-traditional approach. It will explore the ideas of biomimicry and biophilic design in relation to the four catalysts in Indigenous Architecture. Through the western approach and a non-traditional approach to design and systems, it will create more sustainable and healthy building environments for Native Americans living in rural environments.
