–Did you puke? The somewhat bewildered answer hung in the air waiting for the explanation that would soon follow. -Well, if you didn’t puke, you didn’t give everything you had. The discussion at the coffee machine in the office takes place a Monday morning. A Monday after one of the summer’s all different endurance competitions. At first, a thought not to dwell upon, but after a while the nagging feeling of its persistence will not go away. Stretching the limits of body and equipment is today no longer only for the extreme few. Today the starting spots for long distance races, ultra marathons and ski touring competitions sell out in a couple of hours. It is ordinary, however well fit, men and women who participates. These races increase the demand on the qualities of the garments that are worn. Comfort, fit, weight and durability must be spot on to help the athlete to endure. Tierra has a background in the Himalayan expeditions of the early nineties. With the experience from these, together with the help of our test team of mountain guides and other athletes, we keep developing clothes that fulfill these tough demands. At the same time, we get garments that are tested in really extreme conditions, for the more normal user. Garments that will endure. Garments that we are proud to present here.

keb classic Erik Tjerneld, text Kristoffer Frenkel -The sense of really challenging yourself is strongest when the body is drained from energy, the muscles are aching and the brain keeps screaming NO. The challenge becomes even harder when you for a few seconds take time to take in the incredible scenery surrounding Keb, Jonas Lund, Keb Alpine Race contestant says.

The best run in life is the one you share with others. Fight your way up the mountain together and rejoice on the way down. With over twenty years of history and experience Keb Alpine Race is Sweden’s most classic extreme sport competition. Keb Alpine Race, a contest where participants compete to get up and down Kebnekaise in alpine style, was far ahead of its time when first launched. Keb Alpine Race and its two year sister contest Keb Arctic Run, a trail running competition where you run a marathon round base of Kebnekaise with over thirteen hundred meters altitude level difference, provide the building blocks for the Keb Classic. The races attracts the adventurous elite practitioners and ordinary mortals to race in the unforgiving Swedish wilderness. The harsh nature and the stressful challenges were there long before the functional material existed in trendy jackets in glossy fashion magazines. The requirements for enduring a Keb Classic has never changed, the inhospitable nature has always made unreasonable demands on the participant but the interest has increased steadily. One may ask why? Keb Alpine Race takes place in the first week of April 2014. And for those who want to participate, it’s time to start focusing your training now if the goal is to endure the race. Challenge yourself and your friends - carry out the preparations for the race as a team and experience the Swedish wilderness together. This is as big as it gets.

details REAL LIFE – OUR TESTING LABORATORY Take a closer look at zippers, button, hoods, the angle of the pockets, and placements of the seams. There is a specific thought behind every detail putting it there to enhance your experience when being outdoors. These details are put there based on our own experience on expeditions, as well as from the experience of our test team consisting of experienced mountaineers and mountain guides.

One example is the placement of the pockets. You can combine a fleece sweater with a shell jacket and still reach the car key in the pocket of the sweater without removing the jacket. Some of the pocket insides are also in mesh for more effective ventilation. Another example is the safety button beside the lower zipper. It helps you vent the jacket without having fabric blowing in the way around you. Take a look also at the placement of the ventilation zippers. They are placed a little more towards the front in order to stay out of the way when you wear a back pack.

O

nce upon a time, when giants roamed the North, war raged between the mountain giants and the giants from East of the Sea. The king of the mountain giants, the Mountain King, loved his daughter very much. The giants from East of the Sea had drawn closer and closer to the old giants of the North. The battle was violent; enormous boulders flew through the air creating ridges and leaving large stones scattered across the land. Finally, only the Mountain King was left standing. Alone in his despair, the Mountain King threw a pine tree at his enemies. He did not see his daughter standing in the way, and she was hit by the tree. The pine tree landed up at Daunetjokko and to this day is called the Giant’s Pine.

is seldom seen. We have opted for the luxurious option, to take the helicopter out into the wilderness and start our trek from there. Together with our guide of few words from Norrland, Stefan Lundin, we will explore the mountains around Kittelfjäll in search of pristine terrain. It quickly becomes apparent that the sun has betrayed us. Its golden rays look warm, and in my naïveté I did not bring enough clothing. I am immediately hit by a cold Northern wind that whips my face as I step out of the helicopter, and it has nothing to do with the revolving blades. The wind is ferocious(!) even though the skies are blue on top of the mountain. “Clear sky storm,” says our guide, Stefan. “The only thing to do is start walking to stay warm.” And we certainly will be walking.

The Mountain King’s daughter was very beautiful, even in death. The Mountain King’s grief knew no bounds, and his tears filled the entire valley, from the mountains down to the sea. After grieving for three days, the Mountain King picked up his hammer and split Borkan’s highest peak. Half of the mountain collapsed. A large hole formed where the boulder fell. The Mountain King picked up this boulder and laid it across the hole to form his daughter’s coffin, and the flowers of the mountain became her blanket. Ashes were strewn among the hills and the valley, which still glowed red. His tears soaked the ground and a large lake was formed. Your name is Borkajaur, said the Mountain King. The Mountain King’s daughter still lies up at Kittelfjället’s highest peak.

“Clear sky storm, The only thing to do is start walking to stay warm.” We just celebrated Easter. I barely had time to clear the herring off the table before my skis were once again packed and I was on a flight to Villhelmina. At the same time as we arrive at Kittelfjäll, this remote village in Lapland, we see the last Easter guests heading in the opposite direction. It is only April, but the hotel and ski resort where we are staying is empty and deserted. There are so few guests that an accountant would get nervous, but the locals are relaxed. This is what it is like, living at Kittel. Guests come and go. The desolation remains. It feels like we are in a Swedish Wild West. Nice houses, ugly houses, empty houses, animals, snowmobiles and taciturn locals, who with a stern expression watch all these people they do not know. Calmly watching their surroundings, which come and go. But the locals remain. In the mountains, a change in altitude of several hundred metres and climbing skins under my feet have

It is a sunny, cold morning in April the first time I see the Mountain King’s daughter lying there. She is large and magnificent and covered in new fallen snow in honour of the day, which swirls up from the ground as our helicopter lands. It has snowed during the night and even though it seems impossible, the clouds have parted and we are witness to a morning light with a beauty that 19

brought back the heat and I start to feel how a thin layer of sweat has formed on my forehead, cheeks and neck. An icy wind quickly cools down the sweat to ice, and my body is now warm but my face is cold. I better not get sick, I manage to think before I once again push on in the dreamlike world that is a trek. We continue upward, and the higher up we go the harder the wind whips our faces. The contrast of the blue sky and the icy air is fascinating and at the same time dangerous. As soon as I stop moving I get cold and start to shiver. Getting stuck in the mountains right now would be very bad indeed. It is like a magical incantation when someone mentions that lunch might be a good idea. As soon as that door is opened - the idea of stopping, resting, eating some food - it is impossible to think about anything else. The words are like a poison that take over my every thought. I. Must. Eat. Lunch. Now. We confer with one another and make a visual assessment of where we should eat in order to be able to reach the goal for the day. Even though the lunch stop is only a rise of a few hundred metres away, it feels like the distance is unbearably far. The soft snow has been blown away and under our climbing skins instead is pure ice. We have to take off our skis and slowly hack our way up the last peak with our boots and climbing irons. Warm and with red cheeks from both the effort and the wind, we arrive at the place where we thought we would eat lunch. Even though we huddle behind a stone, the wind comes at us from all directions and it even seems to be picking up speed. As a final resort, I put on the warm down jacket I had in my bag. The jacket is like a furnace and I soon stop shivering and can eat my sandwich in peace and drink a little coffee for strength.

After lunch we continue to the top, which now does not appear to be so far away. There is an expression that in a short and concise manner describes the added value of going up the mountain - ”Earn your turns”. To fight through every metre on the way up adds a dimension on the way down that is difficult to understand if you have never experienced it. The feeling of having won a victory on the way up makes the joy of every turn on the way down just that much greater. It is magical when we reach the top and absorb the fact that we just climbed the mountain, knowing that the greatest reward is still to come. Standing at the top and savouring the run that awaits us, without being stressed by a lift pumping other skiers up the mountain who might take your snow. As we thunder down the mountain at high speed and turn back and see how my tracks have carved a pattern into the side of the mountain, it is a heavy moment. When the speed abates and the skis have stopped, we feel the magnificence of standing isolated in a valley in the mountains, knowing that no one else will disturb us. Not even the Mountain King’s daughter, who is resting under our tracks.

Some things are hard to describe in words. We’re not thinking about the adjustable waist or the lumbar plate in the back giving the Rond Pants the perfect comfortable fit. We’re not thinking about the three pockets and the two vent zips at the sides. Nor about snow gaiters on the reinforced leg ends. No, we’re thinking about the sound of skis cutting through fresh snow, the feeling of the warming sun and the laughter of good friend enjoying the run together with you.

Probably one of the most comfortable, best looking and functional reasons for reality to overshadow the text of the catalogue. Remember where you read it when you and the Cosmique pants shine together in the steep slopes. Adjustable lining with belt loops, raised back with lumbar plate. professionals ALPINE MOUNTAIN RESCUE SERVICE

ANNELIE POMPE

There are two alpine groups within the mountain rescue service, one in Östersund and one in Kiruna, and you’ll probably only meet them if something goes terribly wrong on the mountain. Alpina Fjällräddningen helps those in need of assistance within the mountain environment and is specialised in working on precipices and cliffs, with helicopter winching and on glaciers. The organisation comes under the Swedish Police, but the members are civilian volunteers who are selected on the recommendation of others in the group. All members are skilled climbers and the team also includes doctors.

Annelie Pompe can be called many things – the freediver, the climber, the nature-lover, the photographer – or just simply Annelie. She’s climbed Everest and has a world record in freediving, but despite her adrenalin-pumped interests she has an almost Buddhist attitude to life and believes that the greatest adventure of all is the personal journey, the one within us. Her next “journey” is to climb the 7 Summits – the highest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents – and to try to go even deeper and gain a new world record in freediving. KEBNEKAISE MOUNTAIN LODGE

Calling Kebnekaise Fjällstation Sweden’s high alpine centre isn’t an overstatement. The lodge is located 19 km from the end of the road in Nikkaluokta and has 218 beds, a fully-licensed restaurant, conference facilities, a shop, a rental outlet and a well-developed guiding operation. Sweden’s most dramatic summer and winter alpine climbing, the longest ski runs and the highest peaks can be found around “Keb”. The oldest building dates back to 1907 and the business is run – now as it was then – by the Swedish Tourist Association (Svenska turistföreningen, STF).

THULE ADVENTURE TEAM

Thule Adventure Team was established by the team captain Martin Flinta in cooperation with Thule 2009 and aims to be one of the world’s absolute best multisport teams. The members compete in both team and individual competitions in activities where bodies and minds are pushed to the limit. At the beginning of 2013, Thule Adventure Team became the highest ranked of all the multisport teams in the world. The team consists of Martin Flinta, Eva Nyström, Per Vestling (Sweden), Marcel Hagener (Germany) Jacky Boisset and Myriam Guillot (France) and has an impressive list of successes, topped by World Championship gold in 2011 and World Championship silver in 2012.

ABISKO MOUNTAIN LODGE

Somewhere between 90 and 100 kilometres from Kiruna you start to smell the scent of national park and a unique mountain environment in the air. When you get off the train or stretch your legs after the car ride, you’ll sense the exclusive activities that await in your surroundings. That’s just the way we want it to be: an entertaining and exciting concept nestled in the Arctic valley in front of Torneträsk Lake. Today, you’ll be breathless; tomorrow, you’ll draw in deep gulps of fresh air on the mountainside. That’s the way it should be.

ÅRE AVALANCHE CENTER

Åre Lavincenter has the most knowledge in the whole of Scandinavia about what we skiers least want to come up against – avalanches. The centre is located in Stjärnbacken in Åre, but the activities of the centre extend far out into the mountain world with avalanche training courses for both private individuals and professionals such as ski patrollers, ski guides and the military. One of the goals is to increase awareness and knowledge surrounding avalanches. The avalanche centre is responsible for Lavinboken (The Avalanche Handbook) and the website Lavinsmart.se, and also plays an important role in the avalanche forecasts of The Mountain Safety Council of Sweden.

DESTINATION SOUTH LAPLAND

Destination South Lapland was established by the municipalities and local entrepreneurs of Dorotea, Åsele, Vilhelmina and Strömsund in order to market and sell tourism-related products and services produced in the four municipalities.

Organic Cotton To reduce the environmental impact organic cotton is grown without use of toxic persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Third-party certification organiza-tions verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. RECYCLED NYLON Virgin nylon fibre is made from crude oil and the production of recycled nylon yarn requires only 15% of virgin nylon. The ingredient of recycled yarn is industrial waste therefore we can reduce the overall amount of waste that is disposed.

GORE-TEX® Pro products 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro products. For a rough day outside. GORE-TEX® Pro products is the optimum solution for use under extreme tough conditions. The 3-layer construction comprises a special high performance GORE-TEX® membrane bonded to a tough outer material and a specially developed robust inner lining. The benefit: no movement between the three layers, which means less wear and tear, and even greater durability.

Polartec® Classic Micro Outstanding warmth without weight. Highly breathable to provide comfort in all activities and dries quickly to minimize heat loss. The product maintain the insulating ability and non-pilling appearance after repeated laundering. Versatile; appropriate for a broad range of activities.

GORE™ Micro Grid Backer Technology More comfort and performance with the GORE™ Micro Grid Backer Technology. The GORE™ Micro Grid Backer fabric is used in 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro products. It improves internal abrasion and snag resistance, e nhances garment breathability and decreases garment weight. It also allows the garment to slide easily over mid-layers.

Polartec® Power Stretch® PRO Feature body-hugging 4-way stretch and is very breathable. It keeps you dry when you sweat and provide warmth without weight. The durable nylon outer layer is wind- and abrasion-resistant; the soft inner layer pulls moisture away from your skin keeping you dry and warm. It is also comfortable next-to-skin.

GORE-TEX® Active products GORE-TEX® Active laminates combine a lighter, thinner GORE-TEX® membrane with fine denier performance textiles to deliver the ultimate 3-layer solution for the active consumer. On the liner side, a proprietary lamination technology integrates the backer textile directly into the GORE-TEX® membrane allowing or extreme breathability and excellent next to skin comfort.

Polartec® thermal pro High-performance insulation with unique fleece textures. Polartec® Thermal Pro® is the most visually dynamic and technically advanced of the Polartec® insulation fabrics. Tierra’s version have the look of traditional wool with all the performance benefits of fleece.

GORE-TEX® PRODUCTS Garments engineered with GORE-TEX® product technology are durably waterproof and windproof combined with optimised breathability. Enduring products that maximise wearers´ protection and comfort.

PrimaLoft® The human body is around 37 degrees Celsius but often ends up in places that threaten to make it far colder than that! PrimaLoft® insulates your body to keep it comfortable and conserve energy even in extreme cold.

GORE-TEX® with Paclite product technology Paclite® product technology is the ideal solution for hiking, golf, Travel and other activities where space and weight are critical. A protective layer on the inside of the GORE-TEX® membrane makes a separate lining unnecessary. The result: minimum weight and pack volume.

PrimaLoft® Eco PrimaLoft® Eco blends 50% virgin fibres and 50% r ecycled fibres to create a high loft performance insulation. The recycled fibres are produced from post-consumer products (plastic bottles) and post-industrial plastic waste. PrimaLoft® Eco is warm, lightweight and water resistant to keep you dry and comfortable.

Windstopper® Provides soft and lightweight warmth by combining total windproofness, maximum breathability and water resistance. WINDSTOPPER® Insulated Shells are designed to keep the warm air in and the cold wind out, while allowing perspiration to easily escape. They are ideal for cold and windy conditions.

PrimaLoft® SYNERGY, is an advanced multi-denier continuous filament insulation engineered for superior warmth, softness and loft. PrimaLoft® SYNERGY is constructed of both fine and ultra fine denier continuous filament fibers. This fiber composition results in an insulation that raises the performance bar of continuous filament insulations. PrimaLoft® SYNERGY is highly durable and compressible, designed to keep the user warm dry and comfortable.

Pertex® Quantum Pertex® Quantum is the lightest fabric from Pertex, it is true featherweight made from the finest yarn, about 30 g/m2. The tear strength is good for its weight. The fabric is soft as silk and has a small packing volume.

PrimaLoft® SPORT, is a premium performance insulation engineered for superior warmth, water resistance, loft, softness and compressibility. PrimaLoft® SPORT insulation keeps the body warm, dry and comfortable, even in extreme conditions.

Pertex® microlight Pertex® Microlight is made from tightly woven yarns. When used in down jackets the dense weave will prevent excessive heat loss through the fabric. Using 33 decitex/30 denier yarns, it is both downproof and windproof, water-repellent and durable.

Eco Circle™ The Japanese Company Teijin is in the forefront in the world when it comes to recycled polyester. They complete the circle of the garment, instead of wasting the limited resources of nature, they use recycle worn-out garments as raw material when creating new polyester fibers, these fibers are then used in the new high quality fabrics. These new garments are then also recycling friendly, and the circle is closed. This circulation of fibers gives huge environmental impacts, the dumping areas are getting smaller, the use of energy and the carbon dioxide discharge is getting lower.
