Research / Trends Hospitality Design Magazine

September 2014 Perspective Interview with Horst Schulze by Ayesha Khan Design wise , what do you try to create with your hotels? -”What is the expectation of the customer today?” -”Think locally and act globally” -They are coming to this place for a reason, there needs to be a “sense of place. That’s in the design, it’s in the food, it’s in the service, it’s in the design of the uniforms.” -Make customers a part of the design. Consider their needs. Example: outlets, ironing board, hooks at the shower for robes. -Personalization. Customers used to expect marble and chandeliers, now they expect personal experience.

Interior Design Magazine

May 2014 Online Interview with Anthony DiGuiseppe [Founder and President of DiGuiseppe International Hotel and Resort Design] “Spas! People want to look great and feel great.” Common in his hotels, ‘Exhale’ spas Used to be in only the best hotels, and now it’s a necessity for hotels at every level

Site Visit Doubletree

101 S Adams St Tallahassee, FL 32301

Hotel Site Visit Information Our team was not able to visit Doubletree and gather information from hotel staff. The hotel is in the middle of a large renovation in their public spaces so we attribute the difficulty to that. To gather some research we looked on-line at guest reviews of the hotel and visited the hotel lobby.

Reviews “Quick in and out”

Allen F Acworth, United States. 11/03/2014 Stayed here for one night on a business trip. Thought the hotel staff was excellent and the room was clean and will furnished. Only complaint would be the toilet would run if you didn’t leave the handle just so, but not that big of a deal.

“Need improvement in service”

Sibel D Statesboro, United States. 10/28/2014 I had problems with room cleaning and the elevators. They did not clean our room in time and when we asked for it. The elevator made my trips for a room key that did not work twice, extra painful. Three of us stayed in the same room and finding an outlet that worked was a challenge in the room. The staff was nice and the cookie was delicious.

“Very good- but check your credit card charges!”

Prebble R Destin, United States. 10/27/2014 Everything was clean, staff pleasant, very good experience until I got my credit card bill. Apparently we were double-billed for both Starbucks and breakfast in the restaurant. Still waiting on a return call to resolve. I am holding out hope this was a fluke in their credit card system that day and not a regular occurrence.

“All is good”

Dale J Gainesville, United States. 12/22/2014 I had a good business trip and stay at this hotel. The room was clean and staff helpful. Breakfast wait staff was a bit slow, but the food was good. The location is great if you have business in downtown Tally as it is quite walkable in the area. There is a nice park across the street and dinner at Jasmine Cafe (across the street behind the hotel) is fantastic. I would definitely stay here again.

Concept

The Meeting Place

South Africa is a country that sits at the meeting place of elements found in both nature and culture. Geographically, it is where the Indian and Atlantic ocean meet and where mountains meet the ocean. Culturally, South Africa is viewed as a place of opportunity for many other nations in Africa. While this hotel will cater to international travelers, the design will also welcome locals with it’s traditional Dutch architecture and fusion of tribal art with a modern twist. Kukutana or “meeting” in Swahili will be the destination for all those wanting to experience South Africa.

Goals Design a building that mimics the traditional Dutch architecture of Cape Town but also stands out as a high end boutique hotel Create an interior space that shocks and awes all guests who enter with grand fixtures and finishes and creating intimate meeting spaces For both overnight guests and local visitors, create a Restaurant space that showcases a blend of both traditional Dutch and Zulu cuisine For entertainment, create a space that is trendy with a sophisticated lounge and bar space with views to the harbor Design romantic king suites with nods towards The Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) so each room has a different feel, encouraging guest to return and experience more Kukutana has to offer Use as many regional sources for an honest and true design to the area and promote sustainability
