C O N C E P T The design for the Binge Eating Recovery center will be based on the concept of a gradient. This will be representative of the phases of recovery residents would be going through to overcome their eating disorder and the progression the clients have made from serious medical care to recovery and back to their normal lives. This will be seen in the design through the use of different variations in gradients. One is the color scheme that will move from darker to lighter colors as users move through the space, from the more public entry to the more private rooms and finally the more secluded 3rd floor. There will also be a gradient of old to new, capturing the beauty of the Art Deco style while still keeping a modern feel for the younger population this building will be servicing. Smaller elements such as gradients in light and daylighting patterns and gradients in the tile in the resident’s bathroom will reinforce this theme.

The color palette will be taken from the picture to the right of an Art Deco print. Most of the color is the cool, soothing blue that will aid in the healing and recovery of the patients. The darker, richer tones are to reinforce the idea of a gradient moving through the space and will be more concentrated in the ground floor and thin as users move up the building. Finally pops of gold in accessories will add visual interest and in the architecture help assist in way finding.

Signage

A

Main Entrance Signage “Pente” is French for “gradient”, and playing off of the idea of a cool, modern loft, the Eating Recovery Center will be called The Pente House. This will provide security and confidentiality, disguising the building from the public. It literally translates to “The Gradient House” which is a concept that is displayed throughout the design.

B

Protruding Street Signage The main entrance will be moved to the back of the building, so to gain the attention of traffic on All Saints Street. This Art Deco inspired sunburst sign protrudes off the building in compliance with Florida Building Codes. Extends no more than 4’ from the edge of the building and do not extend above the parapet of the existing roof line.

C

Parking Signage This sign sits at ground level facing St. Michaels Street and directs traffic of where to enter the site. The sign is lit with landscape lighting and directs visitors to the secured entrance and parking.

Scale: 1’0” = 3/32” * Gradient of color and finishes through space: Bottom floor the darkest for the most privacy and with only light coming in from one wall. The second floor resident rooms are a little bit lighter with light entering from two sides of the building. And the third floor has the lightest finishes and light entering from every wall, including skylights, for a light and airy feel.

Reception

A View of reception and receptionist desk As visitors walk in The Pente House, a dark and intimate reception gives a feeling of privacy and confidentiality. Dark finishes on the floor, furniture, cabinets and ceiling make this area the darkest room in the building and the darkest color in the gradient. On the ceiling a custom Armstrong installation of dropped wood panels are lit from behind with LED lighting. The symbolic Art Deco sunburst was deconstructed in the ceiling feature with radiating panels that draw visitors attention to the receptionist. The dynamic diagonal lines add energy to the space in an otherwise more neutral environment.

Reception

B Perforated Partition A perforated screen provides privacy for visitors in the seating area and those going into the office along the corridor on the first floor. The perforations allow light to filter through aiding in a gradient of light into the offices that are below grade.

C (Top Right) View of glass front offices Glass front offices along the wall that is below grade allows light from the south wall to penetrate all the way through the space. Frosting gives privacy but still allows light to enter.

C

D (Bottom Right) View into dining/ large group area In keeping with the existing architectural style of the building, a brick arch way leads visitors from the dark, intimate reception into the dining and kitchen areas, one step lighter on the gradient of the building’s design.
