KANAZAWA UMIMIRAI LIBRARY CONCEPT
INSPIRED BY BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE IN FRANCE BY HENRI LABROUSTE REPLICATED THE FREE AND OPEN PLAN AIMED TO CREATE A TRANQUIL SPACE WITH THE SOFT UNIFORM LIGHT CREATED BY THE 6,000 APERTURES STRIVES TO CREATE SOCIAL EXCHANGE AND COMMUNAL GATHERING
KANAZAWA UMIMIRAI LIBRARY narrative
The building consists of a 45 by 45 meter box that is 12 meters high. This makes a vast statement within the neighborhood it is located in due to its size and bright color. The open floor plan is flooded with natural light through 6,000 small circular apertures. These apertures range from 200 mm, 250 mm, and 300 mm. Reading areas are located along the perimeter walls with the apertures to make uses of the daylight. The natural cooling vents on the roof help provide fresh air and combine with a smart cooling and heating system that is supplemented by natural ventilation. The building also had underfloor heating and cooling. The white finish the glazes the building also helps to keep it cool. Libraries in Japan want to encourage people to stay rather than just checking out a book and leaving. They try to incorporate many public areas so that libraries are able to before community centers rather than just its traditional function. With multiple meeting rooms and galleries areas, the library tries to promote social exchange and communal gathering. The library uses a system which makes uses of automated shelves that are able to work as a closed stack system. A closed stack system is an area that contains books that are not available for viewing by the general public. The building itself was made to represent a relationship of knowledge and humans although that relationship is ever changing. The knowledge is contained within a box but this box allows the information inside to mold itself into many different things. One of the main inspirations for the building was the Bibliotheque Nationale with its free and open floor plan. Its main goal was to create an open space with soft uniform light that would create an atmosphere that is pleasing to its users.
