“Designer’s Retreat” is a specialized maker space, living complex, and resource library located in the Ironbound section of Newark adjacent to Independence Park. It mainly targets Designers-In-Residence, as it caters to all the needs of your average designer. A creative environment is promoted by allowing designers to have the privilege of living and working in the same area.

DESIGNER‘S RETREAT

Through a preliminary mapping study, I was able to identify that Independence Park serves as a core plug for many intersections within the Ironbound. The nearby streets intersect the park and visibly continue on the other side. This study of the park helped me to begin thinking about the site for my library in a similar manner. My library has one central core element with two intersections. The central core is activated through a central courtyard with bridges and terraces. Conceptually, the three intersections represent the discovery of knowledge, physical knowledge that has already be collected, and knowledge that is collected through spoken word. Following that study, I was able to divide the program into the Research section (floors 1&2), the Community section (floors 3&4), and the service core.

ON THE INTERTIOR WOULD BE A BOOK CASE THEN ON THE EXTERIOR WOULD BE A PLANEL THAT REPLICATES A BOOKCASE AND SERVES AS SHADING AND EXTERIOR STORAGE. THE FOLLOWING COMBINATIONS ARE USED THROUGH THE BUILDING: BOOKCASE-MULLION OR BOOKCASE-MULLION-PANEL.

Through an earlier analysis, I discovered that historical buildings in Boontoon tend to have an element that you can see from far away which allows it to serve as a beacon. Taking this into consideration I opted to have a traditional drying tower for my firehouse. Historical buildings also tend to be quite large and have a lighter brick color. My firehouse was created in a contemporary manner that fits in with the town of Boonton by taking elements found in the city’s diverse history. One of the main driving forces behind my design is ribboning. My building is a continuous ribbon as seen through the curves which contrast the rigid topology of the site. The seocnd floor has a slight intersection with the bay area to signifiy the three main heights in the building (10, 12, & 14). Above the front entrance is a cantilever that creates a shaded space to signify the entrance.

The conceptual idea that drives the design of my stairs at the highline is confidence. I determined what confidence was through a series of stepping stones in a pyramid like form that leads to elevated platforms. These platforms allow you to choose whether or not you have enough confidence to continue on your journey to the Highline. The final platform for the stairs and elevator are higher than the actual Highline in order to reach that final “confidence point. Different changes in texture and material are used to separate public verses private and to highlight each transition through every space. The plaza is separated into a vendor area, seating areas (with one part under the Highline and two parts that are not), and a private relaxing spcae.
