Design Focus: The latest big trend in the food industry is moving towards the concept of ‘real food,’ sustainable production, organic growing methods, and fair working conditions. In Mark Bittman’s article for the NY Times, “Not All Industrial Food is Evil” a visit to a California farm reveals some sound, ‘progressive’ practices that result in a good tasting, affordable canned product.

Design Statement: The article reveals an industrial process at a specific CA farm and cannery to be focused on treating all things involved in producing its product – land, water, energy and labor – well. The illustration should highlight that the processes in ‘industrial’ food making is on a journey towards sustainability, though not close to a destination it is not lost in the currents of the highbrow trending themes.
