T

he designer of Janson, Miklós Kis, is a very famous scholar, type designer, punchcutter, printer, and publisher. Kis acquired instruction in typography and the art of punchcutting from Dirk Voskens, who is also a well-known Dutch punchcutter and Kis soon became known as one of the best typographic practitioner in Europe. In fact, the name “Janson” is a misnomer, because the type were incorrectly attributed to an early Dutch type founder and printer, Anton Janson, who also worked in Leipzig. It was untill 1970s and early 1980s, the research concluded that the typeface was the work of Miklós Kis. Janson was created during the Baroque period. The popularity of the Baroque style was encouraged by the Catholic Church and they argued that art should communicate its religious themes. The style of baroque period used exaggerated motion to produce drama and grandeur in sculpture, painting, literature, and music. Jason was renewed untill 1952. In 1937, both the Lanston Monotype Company and the Linotype Foundry released their revivals of Janson. Even today, Janson is still extremely popular and widely used. Its spatial economy, excellent legibility, even texture, and strong color contributed greatly to its rise in popularity, and it was continued to be ranked on the best selling type. Roman & Italic
