Annual Report 2009
Recreation Center Lobby
President’s Message The 2009 year was very productive for Tiffin University. Some of the highlights are presented below.
INTERNATIONAL TU began delivering the MBA and BBA programs in the Czech Republic and finalized plans to offer the MBA in Taiwan and Poland. FINANCES The retirement community owned by TU was sold. Also, the fiscal year ended with a clean audit and a healthy surplus.
ENROLLMENT A total of 3,422 students from 47 states and 29 foreign countries were enrolled in the fall 2009 semester, which is a one-year increase of 27 percent and a six-year increase of 128 percent. This compares with a one-year increase of seven percent and a six-year increase of 12 percent for the combined total for all other colleges and universities in Ohio. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS New academic programs included the Bachelor of Arts in Professional Studies, MBA concentrations in Healthcare Administration and International Business, a major in Cyber-Defense and Information Security within the BCJ degree, an sABA concentration in Healthcare Administration, and graduate certificates in several areas. ACCREDITATION The self-study report was completed as part of the process for re-accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and School.
THANK YOU This publication recognizes the many donors who provided financial support for TU during 2009. The generous contributions made by these donors allow TU to continue providing an outstanding education for students for many years into the future.
Dr. Paul Marion, President
CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS The federally-funded Miami Street Improvement Project was constructed, and two of the buildings of the new Living Learning Community (student apartments) were built and occupied. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Fund raising continued during the silent phase of Share the Pride – Build on Tradition: A Campaign for Tiffin University, and plans were developed to announce the public phase in 2010. ATHLETICS Wrestling and women’s lacrosse were implemented as new athletic teams. TECHNOLOGY Work began for the transition to a new student information system.

President’s Message Tiffin University’s enrollment has increased an extraordinary 128 percent from fall 2003 to fall 2009. With more than 3,400 students – which include traditional students living on campus, to regional campuses across the state of Ohio, and online learning programs – TU is fulfilling its goal of becoming a “new kind” of university. The Tiffin campus has grown dramatically as well, from three acres to more than 130 during the past 20 years. Now, two high profile construction projects are not only adding to TU’s capacity to handle increased enrollment, but are also bringing a substantial economic benefit to the City of Tiffin. The first project, a student Living Learning Community, located on Miami Street, has been partially completed with two of four apartment buildings currently being utilized by students. The other two buildings that will complete the complex are scheduled to open during the summer of 2010. The second project, a recreation center that is being built on the opposite side of Miami Street, will be part of a capital campaign to be announced in the near future, according to Dr. Michael Grandillo, TU’s Vice President for Development and Public Affairs. Total investment in both projects is approximately $25 million. “Any time a city the size of Tiffin attracts a $25 million investment, it is a positive thing for the entire community, not just the University itself,” Grandillo says. The Living Learning Community has a price tag of $15 million, while the recreation center will cost about $10 million.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY Tiffin University hosted a ribbon cutting and open house at the site of the new Living Learning Community in August. The ceremony honored the complex’s developer, Frank Murphy, a well-known philanthropist, who initially will lease the buildings to TU and will eventually gift the community to the University. Murphy is CEO of University Housing Solutions and has more than 36 years of experience in designing and constructing innovative university and healthcare facilities. The apartment buildings have been developed for juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Each building includes a multi-purpose room that functions as a classroom and 12 apartments, which house 60 students and a head resident. Each apartment has five single bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. During the August ribbon cutting, Murphy also announced a $300,000 gift to TU for the recreation center. Beyond the obvious advantages for TU students, the Living Learning complex is also directly benefiting the Tiffin community. The student apartments are located on the south side of Miami Street, which was once part of the 10-acre Rosenblatt scrap yard. The project has already restored 4.15 acres of contaminated property. Similar remediation on the north side of Miami Street, where the recreation center is being built, has already begun. The remediation of the former scrap yard is funded by state and federal funds. Frank Murphy

RECREATION CENTER TU’s new recreation center will provide all Tiffin students with better recreational facilities and student athletes with quality indoor space. TU currently has outstanding outdoor facilities for recreation and athletics at the 78-acre Paradiso Athletic Complex. Indoor facilities, however, are limited. The recreation facility will solve this indoor space quandary, consisting of two connected buildings: a fieldhouse and an indoor practice facility. The connector will incorporate the lobby and locker facilities. “Athletics and recreation are an essential component of campus life and are an increasingly important part of TU’s mission to fully meet the needs of our student population,” Grandillo says. “The addition of the recreation center will advance the physical culture of Tiffin University and place it on par with the academic successes already in place.” The fieldhouse (56,921 square feet) will have a running track and accommodate several activities at once – including track, tennis, volleyball, and basketball. Additionally, it will be large enough to house many University functions, including commencement and social events, as well as community functions, such as conventions and cultural events. The practice facility (37,846 square feet) will have an artificial turf surface, and accommodate baseball, softball, football, lacrosse, and soccer team practices, as well as intramurals, club sports, and community activities.
8
CREATING THE ‘COMPLETE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE’ In recent years, TU has invested significant resources into its academics – with the development of new degree programs and construction of the Hertzer Technology Center and the Hayes Center for the Arts. This growth has been guided and driven by keen vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, and funded by private philanthropy. From 1981 through 2003, TU successfully completed three major capital campaigns, with the most recent raising nearly $11.2 million, or 32 percent over its goal. Because of the capital campaigns, TU remains one of the least expensive private universities in Ohio. Both the recreation center and the Living Learning Community are part of TU’s commitment to providing its students with “the complete college experience.” This means the social and recreational opportunities that complement Tiffin University’s strong national and international educational reputation. The end result of constructing the new facilities represents a complete transformation from a junkyard and neighborhood “eyesore” to an integral part of TU’s expansion. Throughout this development, TU has worked in close partnership with the neighborhood, the City, and the State to successfully maximize green space for the city of Tiffin. “The Living Learning Community and recreation center will also make it easier to recruit and retain students – and a strong enrollment is essential to the success of any college or university,” President Paul Marion says. “Tiffin University has proven that it can compete and grow,” says Dr. Gary Heminger, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “There’s been continuous improvement in the quality of the academic programs. We have strong leadership, a strong management team. With the addition of the Living Learning Community and the recreation center, we’ll be in a position to accomplish even greater things in the years ahead. Our students will have a deeper, richer university experience.”
