President’s Message The 2013 year was very positive for Tiffin University. Some of the highlights are described below. Finances At the end of the 2012-13 fiscal year, the value of TU’s net assets was 16% higher than at the end of the previous fiscal year and 374% higher than at the conclusion of the 2004-05 fiscal year. Capital Campaign Share the Pride, Build on Tradition: A Campaign for Tiffin University was successfully completed with a total of $14,583,012 raised, which was 21% over the $12 million goal. Academic Programs New academic concentrations were implemented in Intelligence and Security Studies, Politics and Government, Application Specialist, Software Development, System and Network Support, Classroom Teaching, Educational Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Chemistry. Also, concentrations were developed in Higher Education Administration and Educational Technology Management, as well as an undergraduate major in Exercise Science. Finally, TU began offering entire bachelor’s degree programs in the online format and began providing the opportunity for students to complete a bachelor’s degree in three years and both a bachelor’s and a master’s in four years. Enrollment A total of 4,954 students were enrolled for the 2013 fall semester, including the largest freshman class and the highest number of Tiffin campus undergraduates in TU’s history. Also, the number of international students continued to increase. Facilities Construction of the Murphy Academic Support Center began, the outdoor tennis courts were resurfaced, renovation was started for one of the buildings on the former Pettibone property, and offices for coaches and two classrooms were constructed on the second floor of the Heminger Center. Distance Education The School of Graduate and Distance Education was created and a number of initiatives were implemented to continue improving the quality of academic programs delivered in the online format. Based on a survey conducted by graduateprograms.com, TU’s online graduate programs were ranked as the 9th best in the U.S. Also, TU’s online MBA in Sports Management was ranked by TheBestSchools.org as the 5th best in the country. Athletics The new men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began competition. Campus Safety An emergency management messaging system was implemented and the position of Director of Campus Safety was created and filled. A new home for Tiffin University’s Performing Arts A targeted fund-raising effort will be implemented to renovate several of the facilities that are located on the property on Miami Street that Tiffin University acquired in December of 2012 from the Pettibone Company. Approximately $3 million is needed to renovate two of the facilities to house the University’s rapidly-growing music and dance programs. Another $900,000 is needed to transform another facility on the property into a large multi-purpose room and a lobby/café and to demolish one of the existing structures and create an entrance plaza and parking lot.

Music/Dance Programs According to President Paul Marion, “The number of students participating in music and dance activities has grown from 60 in 2005 to more than 170 and the number of music ensembles has increased from five to more than 20 during the same period. These programs have a positive impact on student enrollment, campus life, and academics. While many of the students who are involved in musical and dance groups do not plan to pursue careers in the performing arts, our new undergraduate major in Professional Music has begun to attract a number of students who do intend to pursue careers as musicians.” The University’s music and dance programs are currently housed in the Hayes Center for the Arts, which was originally planned as a one-story structure for the visual arts, including an art gallery and art studios. Because there were no designated spaces on campus for music and dance activities when the Hayes Center was being planned, a second floor was added as a temporary solution. Both the band and choir are now too large to rehearse in the Hayes Center; there are not enough small rehearsal rooms to handle the many small groups and ensembles that practice simultaneously each day; and rooms for individual music practice are needed now that TU has an academic major and a minor in music. The space in the Hayes Center has allowed the music and dance programs to grow and develop, but is no longer adequate. The new space will include rehearsal rooms for the band, choir, and smaller ensembles, as well as individual music practice rooms, a recording studio, a music lab, storage rooms, offices for Music Department faculty and staff members, and a classroom to be used for classes and dance team practices.

Multi-Purpose Room, Lobby/Café, Entrance Plaza, and Parking Lot The new multi-purpose room will provide space for music performances, lectures, student activities, and employee meetings, programs for prospective students and their parents, banquets, and other activities for the University community and for non-TU groups and organizations. Osceola Theatre is not large enough for certain events and is frequently scheduled, so the new multi-purpose room will resolve some of the scheduling challenges and will be able to handle larger groups than Osceola Theatre can accommodate. The café will be a gathering place for students in addition to serving as the lobby for the multi-purpose room. The entrance plaza will beautify the corner of Miami and Wall Streets and the parking lot will provide additional parking spaces on campus.

Fund-Raising Process According to Ron Schumacher, Vice President for Development and Public Affairs, “The fund-raising process will begin this spring. In addition to providing opportunities for individuals and organizations to contribute, we will also work with community leaders to identify grants that might be available from foundations and state and federal agencies.” “The continued growth of TU’s performing arts programs has provided the impetus for the transformation of the former Pettibone property into much-needed space for the large number of students now taking part in our music and dance programs. The project will also enhance the appearance of the campus, and the multi-purpose room and café/lobby will benefit the community as well as the University”, said Schumacher.

The Giving Clubs of Tiffin University recognize the importance of leadership contributions to the Annual Fund each year. Membership is also extended to those who utilize their corporate matching gift programs. The giving clubs support the current operation of Tiffin University at a level of recognition. TU’s most prestigious clubs are the Founder’s and President’s Clubs, an essential group of supporters who, by level of support, reflect the importance of leadership giving.
