TU Joins Social Movement to Support the People Involved in Crisis in Venezuela According to CNN World, “It's been a month since violent clashes between opposition demonstrators and government forces in Venezuela first grabbed global attention. Protests rage on, and demonstrators show no sign of backing down.”

Tiffin University is joining the social movement to support the people of Venezuela. There are a small number of students and employees at Tiffin University as well as other Tiffin community members from Venezuela, so this crisis touches our small community despite it being thousands of miles away.

TU To Host Community Easter Egg Hunt

ABOUT DRAGON NEWS Published by the Office of Media Relations & Publications, Dragon News is Tiffin University’s weekly electronic newsletter. To submit news, write copy as you wish it to be read, attach art, and email to DragonNews@tiff in.edu each Monday by Noon.

Tiffin University’s Student Government will hold the annual Christi Thomas Memorial Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday, April 16 beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the Legacy Courtyard of the Tiffin campus. The hunt has been a popular offering of the student government for many years and, through a generous do- Dragon News will nation by the Thomas family, it has been renamed to honor Christi Thomas, appear in everywho succumbed to neuroblastoma in 2006. one’s email box All Tiffin-area children are invited to bring family and friends to watch the hunt for brightly colored surprise-filled eggs. A special appearance of TU’s Dragon and the Easter Bunny will also delight children including one special egg per group that offers a special prize. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come and watch the children hunt for brightly colored eggs that have been stuffed with candy. Nobody will leave with an empty basket.

Children are asked to meet in the Osceola Theatre with adult supervision and a basket to collect eggs.

Age groups are set up as follows (hunting times vary): Ages 2 and under Ages 3-4 Ages 5-6 Ages 7+ Parents/guardians are asked to assist in helping children understand the rules explained at the gathering time and to be courteous to their fellow egg hunters.

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER It is not too late to get help on your spring semester classes. The Success Center has tutors available to help you with all of your academic needs.

Center Closed The Student Success Center will be closed on Sunday, April 20 in observance of Easter.

Peer Tutoring To get the support you need simply call the SSC in Friedley Hall and request an appointment with a tutor. The number is 419-448-3324. We have tutors in nearly all subjects. You can also e-mail us at ssc@tiffin.edu to make an appointment. Finally, you could always just drop by to schedule an appointment or to see if a tutor is available at that moment.

The Student Success Center tutoring hours are Monday – Thursday from 9 am to 10 pm, Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm, and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Dr. Dziedzic is a Senior Program Officer in the Center for Post conflict Peace and Stability Operations at the United States Institute of Peace. He is presently engaged in compiling a number of case studies for a book to be entitled "Overlooked Enemies of Peace: Subduing Illicit Power Structures."

A retired United States Air Force (USAF) colonel, Dr. Dziedzic served as a senior military fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, where he focused on peace operations, Latin American regional security affairs, and transnational security threats. During his 30 years with the Air Force, he served in a variety of capacities, including professor of national security studies at the National War College, and strategic military planner for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. His recent publications include: The Quest for Viable Peace: International Intervention and Strategies for Conflict Transformation and Policing the New World Disorder: Peace Operations and Public Safety.

REMINDERS The School of Arts and Sciences will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Exercise Science Lab in the Hanson building on April 16 at 10:30 a.m.

About Exercise Science Tiffin University began offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science in 2014. This program will enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to successfully pursue careers within the rapidly growing domain of Exercise Science, as well as provide an excellent academic foundation for students choosing to pursue professional opportunities in exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, and athletic training. In addition to preparing students for graduate work, the program will also enable them to pursue careers in personal training, coordination of corporate wellness programs, and coaching for strength and conditioning.

In the Exercise Science Lab students will perform studies on body composition, flexibility, maximum oxygen uptake (vO2max), musculoskeletal fitness and physiology, the biomechanics of exercise, and thermodynamics, etc.

The Lab has been equipped with instruments such as the goniometer, Power Systems 70200 FlexTester, MyoTape, balance beam scale, BioScan 916 BIA, hydraulic hand evaluation kit, compact metronome, heart rate monitor watch, Incentive Deep Breathing Exerciser Spirometer, calipers, electromyography system (EMG), and Monark Ergomedic 884E Sprint Bike, Dartfish Software, and stop watches. This equipment will allow students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom.

TU’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) Announces Final Fundraiser: Garage Sale and Balloon Pop The Tiffin University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host a “Garage Sale” in the Gillmor Student Center lobby outside of the gymnasium now through Thursday April 17.

*The Balloon Pop fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, April 22 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Gillmor Student Center gym. Students who buy a ticket before April 17 will be able to pop a balloon for a chance to win one of several prizes (TU gear, $10 gas card, a free horseback riding lesson, a $50.00 cash prize, and more).

Balloon Pop Tickets can be purchased in the Athletic Office or at the Garage Sale in the Gillmor Student Center.

The event is open to the public.

TU to Celebrate Holi Festival of Colors Tiffin University’s Multicultural Services and International Admissions and Advising Offices, along with the International Cultural Center, will celebrate Holi, a Festival of Colors, on Thursday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Legacy Courtyard.

The festival has many purposes. First and foremost, it celebrates the beginning of spring. Overall, this is one of the most spirited and beloved festivals of the Hindu calendar.

“Holi is an opportunity to bring everyone from all religions, ethnicities and backgrounds together to celebrate and have fun,” says Jamie Marinis, Director of Multicultural Services at Tiffin University.

Holi is an ancient Indian celebration that marks the end of the winter gloom and rejoices in the bloom of the new spring season. Color throwing is part of a Hindu tradition of throwing worries to the wind and embracing the new season through spiritual and social harmony.

The Holi Festival of Colors is free and open to all members of the campus and Tiffin community. Everyone in attendance will receive free color, food and fun.

About SAAC The SAAC includes two representatives from each intercollegiate sport team, hand selected by their coaches as leaders both on and off the field.

Their primary responsibilities are to: Promote communication between athletics administration and the student-athlete, disseminate information, provide feedback and insight into athletic department issues, generate a student-athlete voice regarding campus athletics department formulation of policies, build a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletic teams, solicit student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA legislation, organize community service efforts, create a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees, and promote a positive student-athlete image on campus.

According to Marinis, there are currently 195 international students attending Tiffin University representing 29 countries. Currently, nine students on-campus are from India, where Holi originated. Other countries represented include: Argentina, Australia, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, China, France, Germany, Jordan, Kosovo, Latvia, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.

The Tiffin University SAAC fundraises each year for the Make A Wish Foundation.

PLATINUM CHEF COMPETITION

Last week (April 6-11) was the 30th anniversary of National Victim's Rights Week. Students from the L.O.V.E. organization partnered with Seneca County's Victims Assistance Programs to raise awareness on the pressing issues of Dating and Domestic violence and Abuse.

At the Platinum Chef competition, our team of Student Dragon Culinarians placed a very respectful Third Place. The team had a ball and everyone commented on how great their team work was, how awesome the food was and how impressive they were! Third place is the highest place Tiffin has ever finished. The students were great representatives of the University!

TU’s Dr. Law to Conduct Counseling Workshop

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, the Chinese Student Scholarship and Friendship Association will host a Playground Day on Friday, April 18, 7 p.m. in the Heminger Center.

Planned are traditional Chinese sports and prizes!

All students are welcome.

Tiffin University Professor Dr. Fang-Mei Law will conduct a four-hour workshop for the Eastern Ohio Counseling Association on April 19 from 8 am to 12 pm in Warren, OH. The workshop is entitled " Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Theory and Practice in Counseling Setting." One focus area of this workshop is counseling theory. Dr. Law will overview the structure and framework of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), including dialectics, mindfulness, biosocial theory and biopsychosocial model, as well as five essential functions of DBT. The second focus area of this workshop is counseling techniques. First, she will introduce stages, targets, and strategies of DBT. Then, she will provide a framework for how to apply DBT for individuals with pervasive emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, and substance abuse.

Tiffin Leadership Park The Leadership Seneca County class of 2014 presented their community service project to Tiffin City Council on Monday, February 3, 2014 and was approved by a unanimous 6-0 vote. Leadership Park will be located on the east side of the river, along the water front in an existing grassy area. This area will be developed with the intention for it to be used for Tiffin community events including events for the creative arts and community engagement events.

The development of Leadership Park will give a warm welcome coming into the downtown area with beauty and art leading into an inviting historic area that individuals from all over the Country will pass in route to places like Heidelberg University, The Civil War Museum, or the events at the YMCA and Hedges Boyer park.

Market Street is the gateway to the downtown area, and it is the hope of Leadership Seneca County Class of 2014 to kick off to the beautification and economic revitalization of our downtown.
