Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week during the first week of May. This date was chosen because two important anniversaries occurred during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in America on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (by many Chinese laborers) on May 10, 1869.

In 1990 Congress voted to expand it from a week to a month long celebration. In May 1992, the month of May was permanently designated as “Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.”

Both featured headliner KRNFX and guest artist and saxophonist Noah Peterson are presenting workshops in live looping techniques.

On Friday, high school vocal groups will get to work with several guest clinicians, including Peterson, New York City jazz vocalist Aubrey Johnson, and a cappella studio guru Tony Huerta, producer for some of the top vocal groups in the world, and leader of the group Urban Method, finalist on the second season of Aubrey Johnson NBC’s The Sing Off.

The Music Department of Tiffin University hosts its 18th annual ProMusic Festival on Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4 at the Ritz Theatre, 30 South Washington Street, in Tiffin.

TU hosts more than 25 school jazz bands, choirs, vocal jazz groups, and pop a cappella groups during this two-day event.

Professional artists join TU student ensembles in performances during the day on Thursday and Friday, culminating with a 7:30 p.m. concert on Friday by KRNFX, with TU groups opening.

This year’s festival not only features a variety of pop and jazz musical styles, but also a cutting-edge music performance practice -- live looping, which is the recording and immediate playback of music in real-time, allowing musicians to create multiple layers of musical elements that together create the impression of a full band or large group.

About Exercise Science

The Advanced Technical Intelligence Center for Human Capital Development (ATIC) offers a semester internship that will include classroom training, research experience, and the ability for the student to acquire a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. The internship is a flexible program and curriculum that best supports the needs of the intelligence workforce. Co-curricular credit will be available!

Tiffin University began offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science in 2014. This program will enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to successfully pursue careers within the rapidly growing domain of Exercise Science, as well as provide an excellent academic foundation for students choosing to pursue professional opportunities in exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, and athletic training. In addition to preparing students for graduate work, the program will also enable them to pursue careers in personal training, coordination of corporate wellness programs, and coaching for strength and conditioning.

North Central Community Fraud Forum April 9 1 to 5 p.m.

In the Exercise Science Lab students will perform studies on body composition, flexibility, maximum oxygen uptake (vO2max), musculoskeletal fitness and physiology, the biomechanics of exercise, and thermodynamics, etc.

The Lab has been equipped with instruments such as the goniometer, Power Systems 70200 FlexTester, MyoTape, balance beam scale, BioScan 916 BIA, hydraulic hand evaluation kit, compact metronome, heart rate monitor watch, Incentive Deep Breathing Exerciser Spirometer, calipers, electromyography system (EMG), and Monark Ergomedic 884E Sprint Bike, Dartfish Software, and stop watches. This equipment will allow students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom.

The forum will focus on criminal justice and social work. Included are experts in those fields to discuss how we can protect consumers and learn about programs and services offered by the Office of Ohio Attorney General.

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER “Homestretch” Academic Support at SSC The Student Success Center is a great place to get academic support for your classes in the “homestretch” of this term.

April is here already and it’s time to buckle down to complete this semester with your best effort.

Tutoring To get the support you need simply call the SSC in Friedley Hall and request an appointment with a tutor. The number is 419-448-3324. We have tutors in nearly all subjects. You can also e-mail us at ssc@tiffin.edu to make an appointment. Finally, you could always just drop by to schedule an appointment or to see if a tutor is available at that moment.

The Student Success Center tutoring hours are Monday – Thursday from 9 am to 10 pm, Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm, and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Appel to Present at the Ohio Marriage and Family Therapy (OAMFT) Conference Dr. Jonathan Appel, Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Tiffin University, together with his wife Dr. Dohee Kim-Appel, will present at the Ohio Marriage and Family Therapy (OAMFT) Conference in Akron on April 11, 2014.

The research paper to be presented is entitled “The Relationship Between Bowen’s concept of Differentiation of Self and Measurements of Mindfulness.” This paper presents research data collected which had examined the relationship between the Bowen family therapy concept of differentiation of self and two measures of psychological mindfulness. Mindfulness represents an exciting new area in psychology, one that represents a blending of ancient Asian meditative techniques with modern behavioral science.

The findings to be presented by Dr. Appel and his wife have meaningful implications for understanding the relationship of the constructs of differentiation of self and mindfulness as well as for the psychological assessment and treatment of psychopathology in individuals and families. Dr. Appel and Dr. Kim-Appel have been researching in both self-differentiation and mindfulness for a number of years and have numerous presentations in these areas. They have published peer-reviewed papers on the clinical and research implications of these constructs and have written a chapter on Bowen Family Therapy for a forthcoming textbook on Family Therapy.

Nova’s Book Published Tiffin University Adjunct Professor Seraphina Nova has published her debut novel entitled ‘Another Stone to Carry.’

It is the tale of Kass, a small town girl with big dreams, who fights through sexual assault, drug addiction and the misery of life on the street. But it is a childhood acquaintance Nina who turns Kass’ world upside down and challenges everything she thought she knew.

ARTIST MATT TAYLOR TO VISIT CAMPUS APRIL 9 Artist Matt Taylor “Mr. Taylor” designs are about controlling focus, and creating compositions that guide the viewer’s eye. His aim is to emphasize design integrity, while meeting the needs of the client, collaborator, or piece of art.

Mr. Taylor will visit Professor Melanie Trost’s Art History class on April 9. He will discuss his work as a street artist in the surrounding area. He has worked on several mural projects around Northwest Ohio, including the "Toledo Loves Love" wall and a project for Findlay High School.

Matt Taylor is a designer and illustrator who works and lives in the Historic Old West End District of Toledo, Ohio. Early years of non-stop drawing led to a lifelong interest in art and design.

His focus is on creating work that deals with value and intricate detail, embracing imperfection and allowing the composition to build upon itself. He often draws inspiration from ancient engravings and classic tattoos. He has worked as a design director for SillyBrandz Global for the past seven years and is a founding member of Divicious! And LazerShirts and interactive UV glow t-shirt company. Hard work and many volunteer gigs have led him to become a noticeable part of the Toledo, Ohio art scene, showing in numerous galleries and completing large public art murals.

Dr. Dziedzic is a Senior Program Officer in the Center for Post conflict Peace and Stability Operations at the United States Institute of Peace. He is presently engaged in compiling a number of case studies for a book to be entitled "Overlooked Enemies of Peace: Subduing Illicit Power Structures."

A retired United States Air Force (USAF) colonel, Dr. Dziedzic served as a senior military fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, where he focused on peace operations, Latin American regional security affairs, and transnational security threats. During his 30 years with the Air Force, he served in a variety of capacities, including professor of national security studies at the National War College, and strategic military planner for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. His recent publications include: The Quest for Viable Peace: International Intervention and Strategies for Conflict Transformation and Policing the New World Disorder: Peace Operations and Public Safety.

Softball Tiffin University (13-6, 3-1 GLIAC) bounced back from a disappointing first game to earn a split with visiting Findlay, winning 8-3 after losing the opener 10-4.

In the victory, Taylor Spang picked up the win, tossing 6 innings of 4 hit ball with 5 strikeouts and just 2 earned runs allowed.

Tiffin's offense helped Spang out, racking up 14 hits as they scored 7 runs in the first three innings.

Madison Yanek collected 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI, while Jena King also had 2 hits. Payton Denmanhad 2 hits with a double and RBI, while Spang helped her own cause with 2 hits and an RBI. In the opener, TU allowed 6 unearned runs, committing 5 errors with 6 walks and a wild pitch. Yanek took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings and walking 5 while allowing 2 earned runs.

Kristin Prokopakis had 3 hits with an RBI but was the only Dragon with multiple hits. Tiffin also had no extra base hits.

Tiffin Leadership Park The Leadership Seneca County class of 2014 presented their community service project to Tiffin City Council on Monday, February 3, 2014 and was approved by a unanimous 6-0 vote. Leadership Park will be located on the east side of the river, along the water front in an existing grassy area. This area will be developed with the intention for it to be used for Tiffin community events including events for the creative arts and community engagement events.

The development of Leadership Park will give a warm welcome coming into the downtown area with beauty and art leading into an inviting historic area that individuals from all over the Country will pass in route to places like Heidelberg University, The Civil War Museum, or the events at the YMCA and Hedges Boyer park.

Market Street is the gateway to the downtown area, and it is the hope of Leadership Seneca County Class of 2014 to kick off to the beautification and economic revitalization of our downtown.
