TU to Dedicate The Murphy Academic Support Center – Wednesday, September 3 – 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Frank Murphy
Tiffin University will dedicate The Murphy Academic Support Center on Wednesday, September 3 at 10:30 a.m. The center is an addition to the Pfeiffer Library located at the corner of Miami and Sandusky Streets.
Named in honor of TU Trustee Dr. Frank Murphy, who made the philanthropic gesture to create the Murphy Academic Support Center, the new facility houses offices for tutors and success coaches to meet individually with students, a conference room for group tutorials and group study, and a classroom to be used for seminars and workshops related to study skills, career development, and other academic support services, as well as for classes. According to TU President Paul Marion, there are computers for use by students and offices for the Director of Tutoring Services, the Director of Career Development, and the Director of Internships. “The new facade added to the existing library has created an attractive unified appearance for the entire structure consisting of the library and the Murphy Academic Support Center,” Marion said. Murphy, a Wadsworth resident, recalled talking to Marion about the need for the facility, and Murphy agreed with the president's suggestion to construct it as an expansion of the library. Murphy said, “Tiffin University is a sensitive and giving institution that has a lot to be proud of. I firmly believe in higher education.” Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Lil Schumacher said, “The center is now a center for student learning and support. Having tutoring, success coaches, the Director of Career Development, and the Director of Internships located in one place is a tremendous enhancement to the University and on-campus life.” According to Head Librarian Fran Fleet, “This ensures that our library is a learning commons--a facility where students will have access to the assistance and resources they need to succeed academically.”

His history in co-founding OfficeMax and launching MaxWellness are solid evidence of his business and entrepreneurial success. Tiffin University dedicated the Italian-American Neighborhood Memorial located at the corner of Miami and Jackson Streets on August 15. About “Little Italy”
The Tiffin University campus is located in a neighborhood that was once home to a number of Italian-American families. During the 20th century, the streets of Miami, Clay, Adams, Sandusky, Jackson, Wall, Grace and Hudson were known as the heart of Tiffin's “Little Italy” neighborhood. This memorial was in honor of “Little Italy” as well as a reminder to all visitors, community members and TU’s faculty, staff and students, of the rich history of this significant neighborhood.

Ben Folds background singers, Columbus Symphony. The 'Foldschoir' is comprised completely of current and former TU students and teaching staff.
When rocker Ben Folds came to perform with the Columbus Symphony on June 21, his team turned to the Tiffin University Music Department to provide his background vocals. TU Music Department Director Brad Rees put together a select group of TU students, alumni and staff to serve as his Columbus "Foldschoir", which the Columbus Dispatch called the "secret weapon" of his performance. "It is really exciting to put together an allstar group that represents the entire 19year history of the TU Music Department," said Rees. "In this amazing group of singers -- we have alumni from the 1990s and 2000s, a member of the TU class of 2014, two TU graduate assistants, members of our teaching staff, and even a member of the incoming class of 2018. It makes me very proud to be able to create a Foldschoir like this that personifies the quality and growth of the TU music program."
Katie Kufel, who graduated from TU with a degree in Forensic Science in 2014, and is beginning a two-year term as a graduate assistant, coordinating Music Department facilities, equipment and events. Rachel Chiles who has just entered as a first -year student at TU in the fall. Nathan Santos, who serves as TU's Director of Commercial Music, teaches courses in music theory and analysis, directs several large and small ensembles, and serves as instructor of guitar, bass and piano. Mike Burkey, who attended TU in the late 1990s, and was among the first students involved in TU music. TU’s Summer 2014 Online Writing Tutor Project a Success For the second consecutive year, a team of Tiffin University Master of Humanities candidates successfully completed an Online Writing Tutor Project for undergraduate students enrolled in TU’s “Rhetoric & Introduction to Research Writing.” This summer semester, six graduate students, members of Dr. Teresa Collins’ ENG515 “Teaching College Writing,” provided free online tutoring for their undergraduate counterparts, who were taking Professor KrueckFrahn’s ENG141 courses. Although the Murphy Academic Support Center did not offer in-person tutoring during the summer, the graduate online tutors provided the same level of support helping students “with writing issues such as organization, source evaluation, documentation and mechanics.” According to Mark Schrock, Director of Tutoring Services at TU, “The Online Writing Tutor Project bridged a gap during the summer term. It allowed English students to receive valuable feedback and academic support using online resources provided by students in Prof. Collins’ class. These tutors did a fantastic job helping our international population with writing support. This program was highly successful.” The graduate students profited as well because they were able to apply some of the strategies they studied in their own course. ENG515 is an online course for prospective college writing instructors, and the graduate students explored theoretical and practical issues related to teaching freshman composition. By participating in the Online Writing Tutor Project, graduate students were able to use the same best practices in teaching writing that they were studying and see the results first-hand. The tutors then shared their experiences with colleagues in their online class by discussing what they learned from the experience with regard to teaching writing and what they believed they taught the students with whom they worked. Professor Krueck-Frahn reported that her students reacted positively to the extra help from the tutors. She saw measurable improvement in her students’ writing as a result of the feedback they received, and she found that the tutors actually identified the same issues in students’ papers that she focused on reinforcing the strategies and approaches to writing she was teaching in her class. Professor Krueck-Frahn agreed adding, “The Online Writing Tutor Project is a collaborative intellectual investment where faculty and students alike facilitate, promote, and enhance the learning process for the entire community of learners’ benefit and success.” This summer’s student tutors, hailing from such various locations as Florida, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and even Italy, included Kristie Escobar, Mary Laine, Bethany Leinenbach, Jonathan Marcantoni, Christopher Vines, and Paige Verhelst. 14
