ERICK BILLUPS
Degree Completion Student Spotlight Erick Billups is from Cleveland, Ohio and attended Tiffin’s Bachelor of Criminal Justice program at the Cuyahoga Community College-West location. He graduated in August of 2008 with a GPA of 3.4. We recently caught up with Erick to see how he is doing.
TU: Why did you choose Tiffin’s degree completion program?
EB: The first thing that caught my eye was how affordable Tiffin University was compared to other Criminal Justice schools. I also thought the course descriptions were interesting and really pertained to the field. I wanted a seated program close to home and was thrilled to learn I could take classes at a Tri-C campus. I had already earned my Associate’s degree from Tri-C and was very comfortable with that environment. Tiffin’s program requirements were very compatible with Tri-C’s which meant I didn’t have to take a lot of additional courses.
Founded in 1888, Tiffin University is proud to offer a personal and practical education for motivated, professionally focused students who want real-world experiences and results.
TU: What did you like about the program while you were attending class?
I truly believe you can do anything if you put your mind to it and don’t give up.
EB: To me the fast pace was excellent because I am a go-getter. I also liked the instructors who were very professional, welleducated, and had a lot of experience in the field. The one-day-a-week format was also ideal because I could work full-time and still attend classes on Saturday mornings. It was a very convenient program.

TU: Did you face any challenges while you were in our program?
EB: The Statistics class was tough because Math is not my favorite subject. I was able to get through it, though, with the help of my classmates and instructor. I truly believe you can do anything if you put your mind to it and don’t give up.
TU: When you graduated, did the BCJ degree help you?
EB: Yes. I took a lot of police exams and earned anywhere from 5 to 10 additional points just for having a BCJ. It also made me stand out as a candidate because most people did not have a degree. I also learned quite a bit about the Criminal Justice field that I could use in interviews.
TU: What are you doing now?
EB: In May I will be entering the Ohio State Patrol Academy. Once I complete that I will be an Ohio State Trooper. This is one of my lifetime dreams.
TU: Do you have any other goals for the future?
EB: Yes. After I graduate from the Ohio State Patrol Academy I will obtain my M.A . in Homeland Security from Tiffin University. My Master’s will qualify me to teach college courses which I have always dreamed of doing. I also want to run my own security/investigations business. I want to become an expert on various types of fraud so I will become a Certified Fraud Examiner.
financial aid reminder You are now able to file your 2009-10 FAFSA. As soon as you have completed and filed your 2008 Federal Tax Return you should file your FAFSA for the new academic year. To complete your FAFSA, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will also need your Federal PIN. If you don’t remember your PIN, you can request a new one at www.pin.ed.gov. It is important that you enter Tiffin University’s school code, 003121, prior to submitting the FAFSA. Are you completing your degree soon? If so, make sure that everything is in order with the Financial Aid office so you won’t be delayed in receiving your diploma. If you have received Federal loans while enrolled at TU, you will need to complete “exit counseling.” This is a requirement for graduation and must be completed. Exit counseling can be completed by going to https://tunet.tiffin.edu/ics/admissions/financial_aid/student_loan_counselling.jnz and clicking the second option, Exit Counseling. Erica is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Justice Administration. She graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Communications from Heidelberg University. In her spare time, she enjoys running, tanning, swimming, playing on Xbox Live and World of Warcraft. She loves to watch Adult Swim and Rock of Love with Brett Michaels! Katrina Schumacker is one of two new Graduate Assistant’s in Degree Completion Admissions, taking on the role of Online Admissions Representative. Word of the Day
pejorative \pih-JOR-uh-tiv\, adjective: 1. Tending to make or become worse. 2. Tending to disparage or belittle. noun: 1. A belittling or disparaging word or expression. Citing the construction industry, car dealers, and politicians as the purveyors of “sprawl” (a pejorative term that does not even allow for the possibility of benefits associated with low-density development), Kunstler fails to consider the role of market forces. -- Julia Hansen, “letter to the editor”, The Atlantic, December 1996 While he said that he is not a “fanboy,” mildly pejorative slang for an aggressively obsessive “Star Wars” fan, he did mention that the John Williams “Star Wars” theme was played at his wedding reception two years ago. -- Michel Marriott, “On a Galaxy of Sites, ‘Star Wars’ Fever Rises”, New York Times, May 6, 1999 Welfare state is now, even for the Labour party whose grand historic achievement it was, obscurely shameful. A pejorative for our times. -- John Sutherland, “How the potent language of civic life was undermined”, The Guardian, March 20, 2001 Dictionary.com (2009). Word of the Day.
