Attendance Policy Due to the concentrated scheduling and the emphasis upon participatory learning, adult learners need to be in attendance every week. Students are permitted one class session absence in a five or six week course and two classes in a seven, ten, or eleven week course. Absence is permitted due to illness or other emergency situation and must be made up through activities required by the instructor in that module or the Academic Center Director. General guidelines for make-up work are: 1. Make-up work will be graded on a pass/fail basis, and will be assigned at the discretion of the instructor. 2. For make-up in any module, adult learners will discuss the missed class with the instructor. It is expected that make-up arrangements will be equivalent to four hours of class time. 3. Make-up work for the missed class will be turned in to the instructor when the student returns to class the next week. 4. If make-up work is not handed in when due, the student will receive an “F” for the course. Structural guidelines are provided in the Adult Learn Guide for seated courses and in each online course shell. Content of a make-up assignment is at the discretion of the instructor, and is provided in the instructor’s course policy.
Instructors will take attendance weekly and immediately report any absence from the module to the Academic Center Director of the appropriate academic center. If more than one class session is missed in a five or six week module or more than two classes in a seven, ten, or eleven week module, the adult learner must be withdrawn from the module. The student will have the option to retake the module with a later cohort. Tiffin University will monitor attendance records. Attendance records are essential in order to comply with regulations established by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for recipients of VA benefits or federally insured student loans. If long-term medical, family or employment concerns develop, the adult learner must contact the appropriate Tiffin University administrative office immediately. The adult learner will be assisted both academically and financially to address any issue which impacts the program. Make-Up Assignment Policy: When half or more of a class session is missed, the Adult Learner must complete an assignment to make up for the missed course content. (The half-time attendance policy does not apply for online courses.) The assignment is due the week following the missed class, to be turned in with any homework for the week. If the assignment is not completed or it does not meet the requirements, the student will receive an F for the class. The make-up assignment will be a paper, 8 pages in length, about a topic from the missed class session to be chosen by the Instructor. It will include at least two resources other than any resources from the Degree Completion program. These resources may not be websites. They must be academic, industry or occupation resources. The paper will be, as all Degree Completion Program papers are required to be, in APA format, double spaced, Times New Roman, size 12. A title page and a reference page will be included. These will not be counted in the eight pages. The assignment will be graded on a pass-fail basis. It will be submitted to the Degree Completion Program coordinator with the Make-Up Form at the end of the course with the Grade Breakdown and any other paperwork.
