TIFFIN DRAGONS
Tiffin University 125th Anniversary The year was 1888. The United States of America had 38 states, the Statue of Liberty was celebrating her 3rd birthday, a single ounce of gold was worth $20 dollars, and George Washington Williard established the Commercial Department at Heidelberg College that eventually became Tiffin University. This year, 2013, Tiffin University is celebrating its 125th or “quasquicentennial anniversary and we are extremely proud of this milestone achievement. Since its founding in 1888, Tiffin University has successfully educated students for productive and satisfying lives of leadership, excellence, and service. Generations of Tiffin graduates have made positive contributions to their families, communities, and professions. Tiffin University has an excellent reputation, a variety of strong academic programs and co-curricular activities, attractive facilities, caring and competent faculty and staff members, outstanding students, and a friendly, personal environment where students come first.

TU to Observe 9/11 Tiffin University will observe 9/11 by thanking military members and their families (past and present) during a ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, in Chisholm Auditorium (located inside of Franks Hall) at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided. Dr. John Schupp, TU’s Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Student Veteran Advisor will host three mothers from the Blue Star Mothers Association in Bellevue, Ohio. The Blue Star Mothers Association began in 1943. During WWII, the mothers of this association across the country worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages, and even worked for homeland security during times of war. It is a group of mothers of soldiers who volunteer their civilian services and take pride in their connection to the armed forces. “Mothers will share their stories of when their children decided to enlist in the military,” said Schupp. “We plan on having one from each ‘era’ of this latest conflict.” The goal of having one mother’s story from each era: close to 9/11, during the initial surge, and from 2010 or later, is to give the different perspectives of dealing with a child declaring they want to defend the nation during a time of war. Another goal is to show how veterans are viewed when they return home. “TU feels that it is important to thank those wonderful parents who raised their children in such a way that they decided we were valuable enough to defend, without ever meeting us,” said Schupp. For more information about TU’s 9/11 ceremony contact Dr. Schupp at schuppjd@tiffin.edu.

TU’S MUSIC DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR TO SERVE AS GUEST CONDUCTOR TU Music Department Director Brad Rees has been invited to serve as guest conductor for two all-state high school music groups across the nation. “It’s a great honor to be invited to conduct these ensembles,” said Rees. “It’s very rewarding to get to work with the best of the best among high school singers.” This month he directed the Indiana All-State Jazz Choir at the University of Indianapolis which was the featured group as the Indiana Choral Directors Association summer conference. In January 2014, he will conduct the Colorado All-State Women’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble who will be featured at the Colorado Music Education Association conference in Colorado Springs. “I’m particularly excited to get to return to Colorado, where I taught and studied before moving to Ohio in 1995 to establish TU’s very first music program,” he said. Under Rees’ leadership, TU’s music department has grown to offer two cutting-edge music degree programs and more than 15 different music and dance ensembles, and has been recognized as a regional leader in commercial and popular music performance.
Tiffin University Professor Recognized by National Registry Tiffin University Professor of Communication Jan Samoriski has been recognized by the Board of Directors of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for achieving 20 consecutive years as a Nationally Registered EMT. NREMT said Samoriski’s commitment to maintaining the educational and clinical requirements necessary to earn the honor places him “among the few elite EMT’s with the most training in pre-hospital emergency medical care in the nation.” Samoriski is active locally in Seneca County as an EMT-Paramedic, volunteer firefighter and Registered Nurse with teaching and research interests in healthcare, crisis and risk communication. He also serves in a volunteer position as coordinator of the Seneca County Water Rescue Team.
“Emergency response and healthcare is about people and everything we do involves communicating with people,” said Samoriski. “The challenge is in making all of us, especially our students, better communicators.” He said he is especially reminded of the importance of interpersonal communication as a volunteer paramedic and firefighter and the people he encounters in difficult situations at all hours of the day and night. Samoriski said communication skills are important across the curriculum, whether oral or written. With the changing new media environment that now involves everything from interpersonal to social media competencies he said graduates need to have a variety of skills, especially interpersonal ones. In the course of a day Samoriski might go from a classroom to an emergency room, but whatever room he’s in he says there’s always room for better communication. “It’s always about communication.” he said.

Tiffin Community Partnership for Frost Kalnow Stadium to Support Renovation Project
Tiffin University Athletics Joins Forces with Team IMPACT!
The Tiffin Community Partnership for Frost Kalnow Stadium has formed to support the community in raising funds for the $1.4 million stadium renovation project. A leadership team of, Andrew Felter, of the Tiffin Stadium Foundation and Calvert Catholic Schools, Colleen Lazar of Tiffin University, and Mike Klepper, Tiffin City Schools have been selected for the task. They represent the primary organizations that use the facility during the year. They are working closely with Mark Verroco, Principal at Columbian High School, Mike Lucius and Tony Gase of Calvert Catholic Schools and Athletic Boosters, and Lonny Allen, Athletic Director of Tiffin University to complete the general public fundraising phase of the campaign.
Tiffin University athletic teams have joined forces with Team IMPACT. Team IMPACT is a non-profit organization chartered to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by establishing and expanding athletic teambased support networks. In doing so, the team joins the child's support team, supporting the child in his or her medical journey and beyond.
According to Colleen Lazar, Director of the Annual Fund at Tiffin University, “Our Mission is to maintain the integrity and tradition of the Frost-Kalnow Stadium to serve our students and the Tiffin community alike, through modernization, safety improvements and other enhancements of the structure and athletic field. The renovation will focus on improving the track surface, lighting, field turf, scoreboard, stadium seating structure and hand railings.” The last major renovation of the stadium was done in 1999. “The project was much more extensive in ’99 and the stadium has had a large number of games, meets, matches, and events in the 14 years since then.” “Frost-Kalnow stadium is a true jewel of our community and this campaign will keep it that way – we can all be proud of what Tiffin has for our students!” Lazar said.
When a Team Impact Child is drafted onto a Tiffin University athletic team, he/she will, to the greatest extent possible, become an official DRAGON for the duration of their treatment and beyond. “Getting involved with Team IMPACT is important for me as well as the team because it allows us to connect with the community on a personal level. Kids in the area are suffering from illness that is life changing/ threatening, while we are living our dreams of being college athletes. It shows that life is much more than just a game and really makes us realize how fortunate we are," said Joe Graessle, Men’s Basketball Senior Captain.
Of the $1.4 million project cost. $878,000 has been committed through the generous support of major donors including the Kalnow family, the National Machinery Foundation, Meshach Frost Foundation, Tiffin City Schools, Calvert Catholic Schools, Tiffin University, Webster Foundation, Old Fort Bank, United Insurance, and Reineke Family Dealerships.

TU Student Receives NMIA Scholarship
August 27, 2013
BACK IN THE DAY...
Tiffin University student Samantha Molnar is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the National Military Intelligence Association’s Ohio Chapter. “Samantha’s recognition by the NMIA reflects on the hard work she has done here as a student,” said Dr. Jaimie Orr, Dean of the School of Criminal Justice and Social Sciences. “She, and other students like her, are a credit to their generation.” Molnar attended the NMIA luncheon on June 25th at Wright Patterson Air Force Base to receive her award. She was one of three Ohio students who were given the scholarship.
