TU Professor Returns to Teaching Dr. Kathleen Orr, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English, has returned to the School of Arts & Sciences to teach in TU’s on‐campus student writing program. Dr. Orr’s exper‐ tise is in developmental composition, and she has given much time and guidance to both the Developmental Program Commit‐ tee and to the First Year Seminar Commit‐ tee on campus. Her knowledge and special‐ ized expertise in the area of writing and de‐ velopment will help undergraduate stu‐ dents grow and succeed.

Dr. Orr graduated from Heidelberg Univer‐ sity in Tif in, Ohio with a degree in Music Education, has earned an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from National University. She earned a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University. She has taught both English writing courses and Introductory Writing and English as a Second Lan‐ guage.

Prior to coming to Tif in, Ohio, Dr. Orr developed programs for local day schools. In addition, she created and implemented a leadership training program and a character development program for her school as well as for the United Tang Soo Do Federation. She has over twenty years experience in the public schools and in her experience, she had oversight of a number of supervisory education programs. These pro‐ grams included employment as a Training and Curriculum Specialist for the United States Air Force, a Family Homecare Coordinator for the United States Navy, and the Site Director for the YMCA "Early Discover‐ ies" program, a program serving “at risk” preschoolers.

3-ON-3 Basketball Tournament

Tif in University’s Sports Management Club has opened registration for their annual 3‐on‐3 bas‐ ketball tournament on March 30, 2014 in the Heminger Center.

The tournament is open to middle school and high school student, and adult teams. Teams are guaranteed two games. Featured contests include a free throw and knock‐out competition with prize coupons from Napoli’s Pizza.

Cost is $20 per team and $10 per team for TU stu‐ dents and alumni. All players will receive a draw‐ string sports bag courtesy of C.F. Professional Fi‐ nancial Services.

MUSIC NEWS Nashville-based SingerSongwriter Daphne Willis Gives Free Concert at TU

Kid’s Choir Presents 5th Annual Spring Concert

Tif in University wel‐ comes sing‐ songwriter Daphne Willis in concert on Sunday, March 2nd, in Osceola Theatre at the Gillmor Student Center, at 7:00pm.

Daphne Willis performs her rock, jazz and soul‐ in luenced pop songs in this third appearance at Tif‐ in University. With Chicago roots and Texas ties, Daphne brings both musicality and grit to the songs she writes and plays.

Daphne released her independent EP Matter of Time in September 2007. In a twist of fate, Vanguard Rec‐ ords head Kevin Welk heard a track on an American Airlines light that led to a record deal in 2008, and the release of her second EP, Exhibit A. Daphne re‐ leased What to Say in 2010, which was co‐produced

by Tim Lauer and Grammy winner Gary Paczosa.

Album number two, Because I Can, came out in 2011 and reached the number two spot on iTunes’ Top 40 Singer/Songwriter Chart. On her latest EP, Inside Outright, Daphne co‐wrote songs with Hunter Davis, Chris Faulk, Angela Lauer, John Oates of Hall & Oates, Keri Barnes and Tim Lauer.

Daphne currently calls Nashville home, where she crafts her distinct brand of pop and is poised to ex‐ pand her fan base world‐wide. The concert is open to the public without charge, and seating is limited. For more information, contact the Tif in University Mu‐ sic Department at gig@tif in.edu.

The TU Kids Choir will present its 5th Annual Spring Concert on Sat., Mar. 1, in the Gillmor Stu‐ dent Center's Osceola Theatre on the Tif in Uni‐ versity campus. In order to accommodate the growing audiences, the TU Kids Choir will pre‐ sent two identical performances, with the irst show beginning at 7:00pm, and the second re‐ peat show at 7:30pm. Admission is free and open to all ages.

The choir is directed by Ali Rees and Kris Santos.

Open to Tif in area children in grades 2‐8, the after‐school choir specializes in popular music styles and is sponsored by Tif in University. The TU Kids Choir meets on the TU campus each Fri‐ day afternoon between September and March.

Tif in University to Host Annual International Dinner on Saturday, March 29

Tif in University will hold its 23rd An‐ nual International Dinner “The World in Rhythm” on Saturday, March 29, in the Gillmor Student Center, located on campus. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

According to Jamie Marinis, Director of Multicultural Services, the dinner will feature cuisines from across the globe with recipes submitted by the students and employees of Tif in Uni‐ versity. Entertainment will feature the diverse talents of our own interna‐ tional students, along with a variety of groups from the TU Music Depart‐ ment, and headlining performers, Son Gitano.

Grupo Son Gitano is a young, dynamic and eclectic group from Cleveland, Ohio that combines the unique styles from Spain, South America, Puerto Ri‐ co and the U.S. to create the ultimate Latin fusion and musical experience.

The International Dinner is a popular tradition at Tif in University. It pro‐ vides a unique opportunity for Inter‐ national and American students to share their heritage with the campus and the Tif in community through food, arts, and entertainment.

Today, there are 195 international students attending Tif in University representing 29 countries. LEADERSHIP SENECA COUNTY Presents Leadership Park

The Leadership Seneca County class of 2014 presented their community service project, Leadership Park, to Tif in City Council on February 3. It was approved by a unanimous 6‐0 vote. Leadership Park will be located on the east side of the river, along the water front in an ex‐ isting grassy area. The park (see render‐ ing below) will be used for Tif in com‐ munity events including the arts.

Leadership Park will not only beautify the downtown area of Tif in, it will wel‐ come visitors to Tif in’s historic area.

So, What DID Jay say?

Meteorologist Jay Berschback spoke at TU’s Good Morning World breakfast lecture about his career journey from his home near Detroit, Michigan to 13ABC Action News where he has been seen by all of Northwest Ohio for 15 years.

“Like most careers you start small, you work hard, and work your way up to bigger and better,” he said.

His presentation “Follow Your Dreams” encouraged students in attendance to go that extra mile in pur‐ suit of the career they want. He spoke about the bene its of internships and volunteer work in addition to what classwork requires.

It was during his internship as a ill‐in meteorologist at WLNS‐TV in Lansing, Michigan, that he was chal‐ lenged to give his irst live broadcast.

“They literally said ‘kid, this is your shot.’ and it was not pretty, but I got through it,” he said. “I think sometimes you have to personify the camera.”

His experiences in his internship and his time as a weekend meteorologist for Commercial Weather Ser‐ vices, Inc., in Flint, Michigan exemplify his passion and determination.

“I drove up to Flint, sat in a cold shack putting together forecasts to send to stations every weekend while my friends were out having fun,” Berschback noted.

Initially when he started at the University of Michigan he was undecided about his major, but remem‐ bering his childhood interest in weather and obtaining an A in a weather class cemented that a change was necessary.

He stated, “It was hard because I had to squeeze four years of engineering into two years.”

After he received his bachelor’s degree in atmospheric, oceanic, and space sciences from the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering, Berschback worked as the morning/noon meteorologist at WTWO‐ TV in Terre Haute, Indiana.

He joined the 13ABC Action News team in 1999. He has been able to help people by forecasting weather, participating in charity fundraisers, and educating the children in schools throughout the area.

“There’s so much impact on schools, commerce, and other things by the weather,” he said. “It’s trying to help the people stay safe. It’s a challenge, but it is fun.”

Berschback explained how meteorologists have to understand the oceans, the atmosphere and many variables to predict the forecast.

His parting advice was for students to be open to change, stay lexible, and do what they love.

Ashland led 30-24 with 5:11 to play in the first half, but the Dragons got hot over the final 5 minutes, outscoring the Eagles 12-6 to tie the score 36-36 at halftime.

The Dragons continued their hot streak out of the halftime locker room, racing to a 16-4 burst that put them up 12 points after the first 7 minutes. Ashland used three point shooting and healthy rebounding to creep back into it, cutting the lead to 67-63 with 2:47 to play.

Equestrian On Saturday morning the Dragons' western equestrian team competed at the first of three horse shows this weekend. Open rider Megan Nutter put the team on the board first with a 5th place finish in the Open Reining class. Shortly after Advanced Horsemanship riders Michelle Holman and Emilie Seyfang both claimed 3rd, followed by both Josh Gerschutz and Rachael Hudson who took 6th.

In the Novice Horsemanship division Jessica Paule claimed a well deserved 3rd, sophomore Lauren Satterfield took 5th and senior Lauren Burdin 6th. Each of the Dragons Intermediate riders took home top 6 plac-

The Dragons continued their forward momentum into Saturday afternoons competition. The day started off with excellent rides from all Advanced Horsemanship riders. Senior Michelle Holman rode her way to win the Advanced class, giving her 7 points and enough total points on the season to qualify her for Regionals, as did sophomore Emilie Seyfang who placed 2nd. Junior Josh Gerschutz also defeated a competitive field to take the win, followed closely behind by senior Rachael Hudson in 6th.

The Intermediate II Horsemanship division included 5th place results from both Elizabeth Volk and Alexis Wobser, a 4th place finish 11

from Taylor McCluskey, and a 3rd place finish from freshman Kayla Hughes.

Hughes 4 points also qualified her for Regionals and pointed her up into the Novice Horsemanship class.

UPDATED WINTER WEATHER POLICY Tif in Campus If a Level 3 snow emergency is of icially declared for Seneca County by the Sheriff, classes on the Tif in campus will be cancelled and University of ices will be closed. Unless otherwise communicated by the President or the President’s designee, classes will be held and University of ices will be open if a snow emergency is at Level 1 or Level 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather.

If a snow emergency at Level 3 has been of icially declared for Seneca County, University employees are not expected to travel to the Tif in campus. Unless otherwise communicated by the President or the President’s designee, faculty members are expected to travel to the Tif in campus to teach their classes and staff members are expected to travel to the Tif in campus to report for work if a snow emergency for Seneca County is at Level 1 or 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather. If a Seneca County snow emergency is at Level 1 or 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather and an employee chooses not to report for work, the employee must inform his or her supervisor as far in advance as possible and staff members must take annual leave.

An exception to this policy will be made for any employee who lives in a county other than Seneca Coun‐ ty that of icially has a Level 3 snow emergency when Seneca County’s snow emergency is at Level 1 or 2.

In this case, the employee is not expected to travel to the Tif in campus, but must inform his or her su‐ pervisor as far in advance as possible.

If an instructor is not able to travel to the Tif in Campus due to severe weather, the instructor must make arrangements for a colleague or others to take his/her class or may request permission from his or her School Dean as far in advance as possible to teach the class electronically using Moodle. Each Tif‐ in Campus course has a Moodle shell that can be used to create discussion opportunities, send emails to students, and/or communicate assignments.

If classes are being held during severe winter weather, and a commuter student does not attend class due to health reasons or safety concerns, the instructor should allow the student an excused absence.

If classes have been cancelled and University of ices have been closed, certain staff members may be designated by the President or the President’s designee as “essential personnel” and may be asked to report for work. Any hourly staff member who is asked to work when the campus has been closed will be paid at a rate of time and one‐half per hour. Any exempt staff member who is asked to work when the campus is closed will be given compensatory time off at a later date.

Locations Other Than the Tif in Campus For Tif in University classes that are taught at locations other than the Tif in campus, instructors and other University employees should follow the same procedure as described above. The director of each academic center will serve as the President’s designee to determine and communicate any exceptions when there is a snow emergency of Level 1 or 2 for the county where the academic center is located.

Tif in University classes that are taught on a community college campus will be cancelled if the commu‐ nity college cancels its classes.
