FREE CONCERT - Rockabilly Fusion Band to be Featured at TU Saturday, February 13, 7 p.m. Lost State of Franklin brings its unique fusion of rockabilly, jazz, country, rock and roll and beat poetry to Osceola Theatre for a free concert on Saturday, February 13, at 7 p.m. In its ten years of touring, the Clevelandbased band has performed over 500 American shows and multiple times in Europe, entertaining audiences with their unique hybrid style inspired by Johnny Cash and Nirvana, Metallica and Elvis, Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline, Heart and Alice In Chains, Chet Baker and Ozzy Ozbourne, among many others. Led by vocalist, songwriter, poet, trumpet player and guitarist J. Scott Franklin, the band also features singer and stand-up drummer Tyler Postma and upright

bassist Jeremy Cotrell. The band has earned wide acclaim including nominations for Scene Magazine's "Songwriter of the Year," and The Free Times' "Americana Band of the Year." The band's name was inspired by the State of Franklin, an unrecognized and autonomous territory in what is now Tennessee, which was ceded in 1784 to the federal government by North Carolina, and later lost a bid for US statehood. Lost State of Franklin has performed several times in Tif in, both at TU and as part of The Ritz Theatre's Friday Night Live series.

J. Sco Franklin

Scott Franklin will be conducting a songwriting workshop with TU students at 4pm.

MISCELLANEOUS Sleep Talk! Lack of sleep is nothing to brag about! In much of our culture, especially in the workplace, going without sleep is consid‐ ered a badge of honor. Yet 24 hours without sleep is the equivalent of a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent—at which point you are more than legally drunk. Naps make you smarter! Naps are an incredible performance enhancer; we should be more open to napping at work. “The Huffington Post” has nap rooms! Sleep comes when you stop figh ng it! If you find yourself worrying about not falling asleep, you may suffer from what researchers call “fear of sleeplessness.” Finish every day and be done with it! You have done what you could! Dreams really do come true! Many geniuses have said they first envi‐ sioned their inven ons in their dreams! (i.e. Google cofounder Larry Page). TU’s Diane Kidd Gallery to Host “Piano Man” What can an artist do with an old piano? In the hands of the right artist, it can live a new life as a mythical “Piano Man.” Tif in University’s Diane Kidd Gallery will host “Piano Man,” featuring Artist Ken Arthur at its next gallery exhibition. A special opening reception will take place on Wednesday, February 24, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibition will also feature several members of the Tif in Art Guild and students from Ontario High School. The reception will take place at the gallery, located inside the Hayes Center for the Arts on TU’s campus. The reception is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Ken Arthur’s artworks are assemblages with found objects focusing on elements from pianos. “Throughout the community I hunt and gather various pieces for my creations,” Arthur said. “I receive calls telling me about an attic, basement, or outbuilding that someone is clearing out asking me if I would care to salvage the contents. One such telephone call was for a destroyed baby grand piano. As I removed the pieces from the porch, I saw in them a torso, a head, arms and legs. The Piano Man was born.”

Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. For more information, email Assistant Curator Joseph Van Kerkhove: vankerkhovejm@tif in.edu or by calling 614.519.8241.
