TU to Host Women’s Leadership Seminar Tiffin University will be hosting a Women’s Leadership Seminar on Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Osceola Theatre in the Gillmor Student Center.

Goff is in her 15th year as Senior Associate Commissioner and Chief of Staff at the Horizon League. She also is a co-founder of the annual NCAA Women’s Leadership Symposium.

Goff has been honored as one of Indiana’s most influential women in sports, the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators and the Black Coaches Association Administrator-of-the-Year, and as a Distinguished Service Honoree by the Minorities Opportunities Athletics Association.

“The goal is to inspire participants to develop habits of productivity and achievement and to aspire higher in their personal, academic, and/or professional endeavors,” said Dr. Bonnie Tiell, Associate Professor of Management, and Co-Coordinator of the TU Women’s Leadership Seminar (WLS).

“Tiffin University is modeling the collaborative organizational efforts advocated by Goff to design, fund, and promote a universal leadership program benefiting high school and college students in addition to community professionals from all sectors of business and government,” said Tiell.

The seminar will include multiple round-table discussions focusing on leadership skills and career development strategies. Seminar participants will also hear from Alfreeda Goff, the keynote speaker.

Following the seminar, there will be a reception to provide participants the opportunity to network with faculty, round-table experts, and the keynote speaker. The reception will be in Osceola Theatre as well.

Wrongful Conviction—Getting the Innocent out of Prison Topic of Tiffin University’s Next Good Morning World Breakfast Thursday, March 27 Tiffin University’s next Good Morning World Breakfast lecture will take place on Thursday, March 27, when Mark Godsey and Dean Gillispie present Wrongful Conviction—Getting the Innocent out of Prison, at Camden Falls Reception & Conference Center, 2460 South SR 231, in Tiffin, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m.

In the past 25 years, more than 1,200 inmates have been proven innocent and released from prison after serving time--sometimes decades--for crimes they didn't commit. The Ohio Innocence Project (OIP) has been one of the leaders in this movement.

To date, the OIP has obtained the release of 17 innocent Ohio inmates, who together served nearly 300 years in prison. Come hear the stories of our system gone wrong, and what can be done to make it better.

Eyewitnesses linked Dean Gillispie to the rape of three women in Dayton, Ohio, in 1988. He was convicted despite his claims that he was camping in Kentucky at the time of the crimes. A federal judge overturned his conviction in December 2011 based on the fact that prosecutors withheld information from the jury about the original investigation. Police investigators concluded that Gillispie did not fit the victims’ description; he also had an alibi and there was no physical evidence. U.S. Judge Michael Merz recognized evidence that someone else had committed the rapes and that the police had engaged in misconduct which is deliberately hiding or destroying evidence. Gillispie’s case is featured in Fatal Justice: Eight Myths that Convict the Innocent by Jim and Nancy Petro. While he was the Ohio Attorney General, Jim Petro supported Gillispie’s innocence.

TU Adjunct Professor’s Paper Published in Journal of Information and Communication Technology

TU Hosts Chinese Student Ambassadors Tiffin University hosted a reception welcoming the Chinese Student Ambassadors on Monday, March 17 at 3:00 pm in Franks Hall.

TU is hosting eight students and two professors from Shenyang Aerospace University in Shenyang, China, as part of the Chinese Student Ambassador Program. The Chinese Student Ambassadors will be visiting campus for three weeks.

Tiffin University Adjunct Professor Dr. Stavroula Kalogeras’s paper, “Storytelling: An Ancient Human Technology and a Critical-Creative Pedagogy for Transformative Learning,” was recently published in the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology.

“One cannot ignore the transformation that society is experiencing today. There are many opportunities to seize the moment and move towards educational transformation and storytelling edutainment is one way to do that,” said Kalogeras.

Chinese student ambassadors and their two professors pose before the welcoming reception.

“Transformative Learning by way of Critical-Creative Pedagogy is strategy that combines narrative-centered techniques to engage learners. Narrative practices place students in fictional settings of watching a film, interacting with game, or completing a case study,” she continued. “Research shows that the lecture is a poor form for student attention and retention; therefore, we need new strategies to engage learners. We need to engage them by a story which tends to be remembered long after it is told.”

“The goal of the Ambassador Program is to provide these students the opportunity to experience higher education in the United States by engaging in the academic rigor and campus life at Tiffin University. The hope is that the students will immerse themselves in American university life while making meaningful connections,” said Jamie Marinis, Director of First-Year Programs and Multicultural Services at Tiffin University.

According to Kalogeras, Storytelling Edutainment is a transformative learning strategy and critical-creative pedagogy, which is innate to the way humans prefer to learn. It empowers learners to uncover layers of meaning which they can verify or disapprove.

The Chinese Student Ambassador Program was established based on an agreement between the president’s of both Tiffin University and Shenyang Aerospace University. “The Student Ambassadors will observe courses within their discipline, meet with faculty, staff, and student organization leaders, participate in cocurricular and extra-curricular activities, attend academic and cultural events, and meet with students from diverse, cultural backgrounds,” said Dr. Zhaolu Lu, Professor and China Program Coordinator at TU.

Dr. Kalogeras worked in the entertainment industry in Hollywood where she was exposed to storytelling and some of the great talents of the world. “It is a humbling experience to work with the finest creative talents in the industry, and I like to enrich my classroom with these experiences,” she said. “Above all, I like to connect and engage with my students on a much deeper level and I find that learning content delivered by way of story mode is much more effective.”

In turn, the Chinese Student Ambassadors will share their educational and cultural experiences by presenting educational seminars to Tiffin University students, faculty, and staff during their visit. The Ambassadors will be provided on-campus residence, with the opportunity to live and interact with current Tiffin University students.

Dr. Kalogeras earned a Ph.D. from the University of Hull, a MBA from the University of La Verne and a BA in Communications (mass media) from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

TU Professor’s Paper Published in Journal of Applied Business and Economics Tiffin University Professor Dr. Lisa Kahle-Piasecki’s paper, “Business in Costa Rica: Trends and Issues,” was recently published in the Journal of Applied Business and Economics.

“My interest in Costa Rica is the result of my experience living and teaching there as a visiting professor,” said Piasecki. “This experience helps integrate global perspectives in the classroom.”

Kahle-Piasecki’s article was chosen at the 2013 National Business Education Society Conference.

Piasecki’s article highlights Costa Rica’s growing industry based on technology and ecotourism. Its purpose is to suggest solutions to identified management issues that are confronting businesses opening operations in the Central American nation.

One such solution that Kahle-Piasecki offers is the “training of planned expatriates to work abroad by developing and encouraging a global awareness and pairing the employee with a mentor who is a resident in the future country assignment.”

Dr. Kahle-Piasecki taught in Costa Rica on the topic of emerging technologies and the ethical issues encountered in relation to technology.

She earned a Ph.D. and BA from the University of Toledo, an MED from Bowling Green State University, a MBA from the University of Findlay.

On Thursday, April 17, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., Tiffin University will host Dr. Michael Dziedzic, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and author of "Policing the New World Disorder: Peace Operations and Public Safety."

The presentation will take place in Chisholm Auditorium of Frank's Hall.

Dr. Dziedzic is a Senior Program Officer in the Center for Post conflict Peace and Stability Operations at the United States Institute of Peace. He is presently engaged in compiling a number of case studies for a book to be entitled "Overlooked Enemies of Peace: Subduing Illicit Power Structures."

A retired United States Air Force (USAF) colonel, Dr. Dziedzic served as a senior military fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, where he focused on peace operations, Latin American regional security affairs, and transnational security threats. During his 30 years with the Air Force, he served in a variety of capacities, including professor of national security studies at the National War College, and strategic military planner for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. His recent publications include: The Quest for Viable Peace: International Intervention and Strategies for Conflict Transformation and Policing the New World Disorder: Peace Operations and Public Safety.

Swimming and Diving Freshman Kyle Doss closed the inaugural season of the Tiffin University men's and women's swimming and diving team by earning All-American honors, Friday at the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Doss swam 1:51.07 to place 15th in the 200-yard butterfly. His performance earned him AllAmerican honorable mention. Doss also competed in the 100 fly (23rd – 49.80) and the 200 individual medley (25th – 1:51.59).

For Tiffin, sophomore Logan Sendelbach (0-4) had a strong outing. He gave up six hits, one run, walked one and struck out two in six innings.

Women's Lacrosse Tiffin University (0-6) continues its search for its first win of 2014, falling to Seton Hill 18-10 after a first half that saw the Dragons fall behind early and fail to catch up.

Seton Hill jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes and pushed their lead to 11-4 at halftime.

They used a healthy shot advantage throughout the game to maintain control, outshooting TU 47-20 overall. They also had a 31 -16 lead in ground balls.

Emily Roussel had 3 goals, 4 ground balls, and 5 draw controls, while Katelyn Hill had 3 goals and 5 draw controls. Tori Nelson added 2 goals and 2 assists, while Alexis MacMillan and Morgan Sherley also had goals.

Sean’s daughters have been active in the events that the organization has held helping to paint hands at the first annual Fight the Fight event in October of 2013, passing out awareness ribbons at the L.O.V.E. Presents Guest Speaker event in January of 2014, and are even working to make rubber band bracelets to promote awareness!

Why should men get involved?

“I believe it is extremely vital to have men in an organization like this. This is generally a female dominated field. It is important to let people know that men do care about victims and we are not cruel. The other aspect is that men can be victims too, and they will need help. It is helpful to have a man in the field to be able to support the men who are victims. It is also important to have men and women in the field together so every perspective is brought to light. I strongly believe that men should be present in victim advocacy in order to improve an already growing field.”

UPDATED WINTER WEATHER POLICY Tiffin Campus If a Level 3 snow emergency is officially declared for Seneca County by the Sheriff, classes on the Tiffin campus will be cancelled and University offices will be closed. Unless otherwise communicated by the President or the President’s designee, classes will be held and University offices will be open if a snow emergency is at Level 1 or Level 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather.

If a snow emergency at Level 3 has been officially declared for Seneca County, University employees are not expected to travel to the Tiffin campus. Unless otherwise communicated by the President or the President’s designee, faculty members are expected to travel to the Tiffin campus to teach their classes and staff members are expected to travel to the Tiffin campus to report for work if a snow emergency for Seneca County is at Level 1 or 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather. If a Seneca County snow emergency is at Level 1 or 2 or in other cases of severe winter weather and an employee chooses not to report for work, the employee must inform his or her supervisor as far in advance as possible and staff members must take annual leave.

An exception to this policy will be made for any employee who lives in a county other than Seneca County that officially has a Level 3 snow emergency when Seneca County’s snow emergency is at Level 1 or 2.

In this case, the employee is not expected to travel to the Tiffin campus, but must inform his or her supervisor as far in advance as possible.

If an instructor is not able to travel to the Tiffin Campus due to severe weather, the instructor must make arrangements for a colleague or others to take his/her class or may request permission from his or her School Dean as far in advance as possible to teach the class electronically using Moodle. Each Tiffin Campus course has a Moodle shell that can be used to create discussion opportunities, send emails to students, and/or communicate assignments.

If classes are being held during severe winter weather, and a commuter student does not attend class due to health reasons or safety concerns, the instructor should allow the student an excused absence.

If classes have been cancelled and University offices have been closed, certain staff members may be designated by the President or the President’s designee as “essential personnel” and may be asked to report for work. Any hourly staff member who is asked to work when the campus has been closed will be paid at a rate of time and one-half per hour. Any exempt staff member who is asked to work when the campus is closed will be given compensatory time off at a later date.

Locations Other Than the Tiffin Campus For Tiffin University classes that are taught at locations other than the Tiffin campus, instructors and other University employees should follow the same procedure as described above. The director of each academic center will serve as the President’s designee to determine and communicate any exceptions when there is a snow emergency of Level 1 or 2 for the county where the academic center is located.

Tiffin University classes that are taught on a community college campus will be cancelled if the community college cancels its classes.

Tiffin Leadership Park The Leadership Seneca County class of 2014 presented their community service project to Tiffin City Council on Monday, February 3, 2014 and was approved by a unanimous 6-0 vote. Leadership Park will be located on the east side of the river, along the water front in an existing grassy area. This area will be developed with the intention for it to be used for Tiffin community events including events for the creative arts and community engagement events.

The development of Leadership Park will give a warm welcome coming into the downtown area with beauty and art leading into an inviting historic area that individuals from all over the Country will pass in route to places like Heidelberg University, The Civil War Museum, or the events at the YMCA and Hedges Boyer park.

Market Street is the gateway to the downtown area, and it is the hope of Leadership Seneca County Class of 2014 to kick off to the beautification and economic revitalization of our downtown.
