TU to Observe 9/11

STATE OF THE WORLD Topic of First Good Morning World Breakfast

Tiffin University will observe 9/11 by thanking military members and their families (past and present) during a ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, in Chisholm Auditorium (located inside of Franks Hall) at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Tiffin University’s first Good Morning World Breakfast lecture will feature Dr. Thomas Barnett, Chief Analyst with WikiStrat, on Thursday, September 19. Barnett with present “State of the World” at Camden Falls Reception & Conference Center, 2460 South SR 231, in Tiffin, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. Thomas P.M. Barnett, PhD, is a Grand Strategist who has worked in national security affairs since the end of the Cold War.

Dr. John Schupp, TU’s Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Student Veteran Advisor will host three mothers from the Blue Star Mothers Association in Bellevue, Ohio.

Dr. Barnett is best known as the New York Timesbestseller, author of The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century (2004). He has also written Blueprint for Action: A Future Worth Creating (2005), and Great Powers: America and the World After Bush (2009). Esquire named the Best and the Brightest in 2002; he has also been described by U.S. News & World Report's Michael Barone as "one of the most important strategic thinkers of our time."

The Blue Star Mothers Association began in 1943. During WWII, the mothers of this association across the country worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages, and even worked for homeland security during times of war. It is a group of mothers of soldiers who volunteer their civilian services and take pride in their connection to the armed forces. “Mothers will share their stories of when their children decided to enlist in the military,” said Schupp. “We plan on having one from each ‘era’ of this latest conflict.” The goal of having one mother’s story from each era: close to 9/11, during the initial surge, and from 2010 or later, is to give the different perspectives of dealing with a child declaring they want to defend the nation during a time of war.

He holds a PhD in Political Science from Harvard University and is currently the Chief Analyst for WikiStrat, running his own consulting company Barnett Consulting LLC, a Contributing Editor for www.esquire.com , write a weekly column at the World Politics Review.

Another goal is to show how veterans are viewed when they return home. “TU feels that it is important to thank those wonderful parents who raised their children in such a way that they decided we were valuable enough to defend, without ever meeting us,” said Schupp.

All breakfast lectures take place at Camden Falls Reception Hall located at 2460 South State Route 231 in Tiffin. The format is simple: breakfast is served buffet style at 7:30 a.m., the speaker will present at 8:00 with conclusion by 8:50 a.m. The cost is $12.00. Reservation: Call Lori Bentz, Tiffin University, 419.448.3282.

For more information about TU’s 9/11 ceremony contact Dr. Schupp at schuppjd@tiffin.edu.

The SSC is the place to be….for study tables, tutoring, research helps, workshops, and a myriad of other great academic support opportunities. Rolling out this week will be 3 exciting new programs designed to aid students in courses with traditionally difficult content, including those courses that many times serve as ‘barrier’ courses for students, preventing them from progressing to the next level of study. These are: PAL (peer-assisted learning) is a non-mandatory, very interactive and productive (and fun!) academic support opportunity for students in many of the English courses, chemistry, biology, history, calculus, possibly languages, and other areas with difficult content. PALs will attend the course and then run interactive, engaging sessions outside of the course time. These will be run by students who have previously taken the course successfully who can share different ways to learn the concepts, vocabulary, etc. and be successful in the course. PASS (peer-assisted study sessions) will be for courses with difficult/challenging content but that do not have a PAL. These will be run for courses such as culture, econ, upper level English, JUS 201 and 202, MKT 151, PHI classes, POL 101, PSY 101 and SOC 101. We will also provide these for the education courses to assist education majors with their seated courses. These will also be run by students who have previously taken the course successfully who can share different ways to learn the concepts, vocabulary, etc. and be successful in the course. They just won’t attend the actual class this term, but will be in contact with the instructors for information updates and content suggestions. Power Hour is like tutor-aided study hall. This is for each of the math and computer science courses as well as accounting at almost all levels. This is designed for students to go to the room, work on their assignments, and when they have a question, ask the facilitator/tutor a question right then. These will be offered throughout the day in various locations, hoping to accommodate many more students than have been helped in the past. Please see the attached schedule for sessions throughout the week. Attendance will be taken for data purposes only (study table credit, SSC data, etc.). Just a reminder: data compiled here at TU and around the country overwhelmingly shows a minimum of an indirect connection between PAL/PASS/POWER HOUR attendance and an increase in grades. A couple of other reminders: Please remember if you make a permanent appointment, you need to attend the appointment each week. Two missed appointments will cause these to be cancelled for the term. Students can make an appointment for tutoring without making a weekly permanent appointment. If you need to cancel, please notify the SSC desk as soon as possible. Due to the increased traffic in the SSC, please try very hard to speak in a quiet voice during appointments, etc. in order to keep the noise levels at a minimum Students logging in for study table hours need to remember that Facebook, watching movies (except for class), sleeping, talking, using a cell phone, etc. do not count for study table hours. Finally, we would like to give a quick shout out to Graduate Assistant Andrew Dean, Grad students Anthony Dean and Jessica Huffman, as well as all of the other facilitators and tutors that are working together to make this incredible academic support undertaking a go. Your help and support has been greatly appreciated by the SSC Director, faculty, and students alike
