TU to Observe 9/11
O’Donnell Named Assistant Athletic Director
Tiffin University will observe 9/11 by thanking military members and their families (past and present) during a ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, in Chisholm Auditorium (located inside of Franks Hall) at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
Tiffin University Sports Information Director Shane O'Donnell has been promoted to Assistant Athletic Director. O'Donnell, entering his 22nd year as Sports Information Director for the Dragons, will continue to oversee all Sports Information duties as well as oversee Game Management Coordination. Amongst O'Donnell's primary responsibilities are overseeing production and design of all athletic media guides, handling media relations and statistical game management, maintaining the athletic website, and historical archive maintenance. He also oversees athletic television productions, handling the creation and maintenance of all television activity on Channel 10 including live and tape delayed programming, and post-production editing.
Dr. John Schupp, TU’s Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Student Veteran Advisor will host three mothers from the Blue Star Mothers Association in Bellevue, Ohio. The Blue Star Mothers Association began in 1943. During WWII, the mothers of this association across the country worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages, and even worked for homeland security during times of war. It is a group of mothers of soldiers who volunteer their civilian services and take pride in their connection to the armed forces. “Mothers will share their stories of when their children decided to enlist in the military,” said Schupp. “We plan on having one from each ‘era’ of this latest conflict.”
O'Donnell served as chair of the Information and Technology Committee for three years, and also serves on the Web Content Committee. He is the chair of the Hall of Fame Committee, and helped oversee the creation of the Tiffin University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.
The goal of having one mother’s story from each era: close to 9/11, during the initial surge, and from 2010 or later, is to give the different perspectives of dealing with a child declaring they want to defend the nation during a time of war. Another goal is to show how veterans are viewed when they return home.
Prior to coming to TU, O'Donnell worked as a sports reporter for the Advertiser-Tribune for 8 years. During this time, he was awarded First place in Sports News Competition by the Great Lakes Interscholastic Press Association in 1987 conducted by School of Mass Communication at Bowling Green State University. O'Donnell is a graduate of Tiffin University, majoring in Organizational Management.
“TU feels that it is important to thank those wonderful parents who raised their children in such a way that they decided we were valuable enough to defend, without ever meeting us,” said Schupp. For more information about TU’s 9/11 ceremony contact Dr. Schupp at schuppjd@tiffin.edu.
"Shane has been a dedicated and loyal employee for some time," said Athletic Director Lonny Allen. "His work speaks for itself. I am pleased to promote him in this capacity. It is a well deserved promotion and I look forward to seeing him grow in this new role."

Student Success Center News
Volume 2, Issue 2
SEPTEMBER 3, 2013
Welcome back TU students!! With a great start to the fall semester and a wonderful turnout for the SSC ice cream social last week, the Student Success Center is off and running with a number of new programs as well as a couple of our traditional offerings we have implemented in the past. Returning is the traditional seated peer tutoring program in the SSC. Please remember that while we do make every effort to service walk-in appointments as quickly as possible, making an appointment is still the best way to guarantee that you will have the time with a peer tutor when you need it. We will also continue the workshop program, including a few new types of workshops for the student body. Each of the workshops provides an interactive opportunity for students in any grade level and any area of study to get needed and essential academic support. There are also a number of these workshops that do count for co-curricular credit as well. Please see the workshop schedules posted around campus and in the Dragon News for dates, times, and locations. New to the SSC are the following programs that will begin the week of September 9: First, SI as it has been run in the past no longer exists. It is now called the PAL program (peer-assisted learning), and will be a non-mandatory, much more interactive and productive (and fun!) academic support opportunity for students in many of the English courses, history, calculus, possibly languages, and other areas with difficult content. Next, we will have Power Hour. This is like tutor-aided study hall. This is for each of the math and computer science courses where students can go to the room, work on their assignments, and when they have a question, ask the facilitator/tutor a question right then. These will be offered throughout the day in various locations, hoping to accommodate many more students than have been helped in the past. Finally, we have PASS (peer-assisted study sessions) for courses with difficult/challenging content but that do not have a PAL. These will be run for courses such as culture, econ, upper level English, JUS 201 and 202, MKT 151, PHI classes, POL 101, PSY 101 and SOC 101. We will also provide one of these for the education courses to assist education majors with their seated courses. These will be run by students who have previously taken the course successfully who can share different ways to learn the concepts, vocabulary, etc. and be successful in the course. Please plan to take advantage of these FREE opportunities to maximize study time and improve overall grades. Data we've compiled from TU as well as data from other universities operating similar programs taken over Employment Fair many years indicates that students who do take advantage of these opportunities get between a half letter grade up to a grade On Wednesday, September 4 from and a half letter grade higher in the course, indicating at least a strong indirect correla- 11:30 am - 1:30 pm in Osceola Theatre tion between participation and success. (located inside of the Gillmor Student As you can see, the SSC is hopping!! Plan to visit a session, take time for a workshop, meet with a tutor, or carve out some quiet study time today!! 5
Center), students will have an opportunity to search for on-campus employment during the Employment Fair.
