Our faculty has been deeply troubled over the years by several of our students passing away while attending school here at West Blocton High School. We have long wanted to remember these students (Kaci Crawford, Jesse Hicks, Gavin Jackson, Kacey Atchison, Brad Belcher, Melissa Lawson, David Aaron, and Marvin Snelson) in some sort of a memorial. We have also wanted an outdoor classroom for several years. Many teachers liked the idea of taking students out into the environment to read stories, to perform lab experiments, or just to complete assignments in the fresh air. Our Memorial Outdoor Classroom was a way to do both. We asked for donations from the community and received several donations from individuals which enabled us to reach our goal of $3500. We had a group of girls (Morgan Harrison, Sierra Martin, Amberly Campbell, and Brooklyn Araujo) from Mrs. K. Hubbard’s “The Club” volunteer their time to put together the benches with Mrs. Mabry. They worked for several hours to put together the ten-eight foot benches. Thank you, girls. We then needed to move the benches out of the hallway to where they were going to be placed. Four young men carried out the heavy benches. These students were Curtis Wright, Tyloun Hill, Cannon McCulley, and Brennan Morris. We appreciated their

A huge thank you to McKinney Auto!

The most difficult job by far was positioning the benches in the ground. We had a group of men from the community come out and spend several hours digging holes and positioning the benches. The job was made a great deal easier when Mr. Gene McKinney from McKinney Auto showed up with his bobcat with an auger on the front end. The men made quick work of the very difficult job. The volunteers were Tommy Joe Crawford, Kevin Deerman, Josh Hicks, Andy Johnson, Craig Martin, Gene McKinney, Matthew Nelson, Canaan Pope, Jonathan Toxey, and Seth Toxey. Mr. McKinney, also, donated the concrete to set the benches. Thank you, all! This was a community effort, and thanks to all those who took a part in this ambitious project. We will remember and think of our fallen students every time we enjoy our outdoor classroom.

Mrs. Beth Downs from Centreville Trophy Shop produced the memorial plaques at cost for us. She came out twice to measure the benches and to place the plaques on the benches. She and her company did a great job. Thank you, Mrs. Downs. Mr. Lawley, our principal at WBHS, is having a fence put up to enclose the memorial classroom so that the benches will be protected. The Memorial Outdoor Classroom was commemorated on August 28, 2017 by the graduating Class of 2017 seniors with Mr. Stephen White, SGA President and Miss Aly Brown speaking to the seniors and leading the group in prayer.

A total Eclipse of the Sun A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun, but leaves a vibrant light around the edges. The last total solar eclipse that took a very similar path to the one on August 21, 2017. And it happened almost 100 years ago in 1918. Can you imagine that even your grandchildren’s children will never be able to witness this remarkable event in their lifetime. I mean, of course there is always Youtube, but that's nothing compared to witnessing it in person. The total eclipse is an amazing event to see, although it to has its “side effects” like most everything if you don't protect yourself. To witness this, you need blackened glasses, much like that of a welding helmet to protect your eyes. If you watch the total eclipse without protection, it could result in eye damage and ultimately lead to blindness. Hopefully all of you used your glasses and were cautious not to look at it without them. Did you all enjoy watching the eclipse? I know I did! Because now when I have children of my own one day, I’ll be able to share my memory with them. Maybe you’ll do the same.

#BibbRocks Love. Joy. Cheer. Before now, these words would never have been associated with rocks. However, that was before Bibb Rocks. Bibb County is a tightly-knit, loving community, where your neighbor is as much your family as your brother. It is also a beautiful area, and, in an effort to highlight that, a movement has been started called Bibb Rocks. To be a part of this group, all you have to do is paint a rock with an uplifting message, write #BibbRocks on the back, and hide it anywhere in the community! People all over Bibb County have been finding these rocks, and posting hints about their hiding places on Facebook. Some people have even gone so far as to hide small gifts with their rocks, like books or gift cards! This movement was started to bring people out from behind phone screens to connect with other people-and with the community-in a fun, unique way. Are you a part of it yet?

Horoscopes September 2017 Let’s see what the stars have to say about your future today. Aquarius - (January 20th –February 18th) For quite a while, you've been considering what to do about your relationship with a certain someone. Should you end it, slow it down or jump right in? The fact that you’re not sure is a statement in itself. Pisces- (February 18th – March 20th) You’ve been running along a rugged path but only looking behind you. Take a moment and stare ahead. Is this the right path for you, are you making the right decisions? Think about that before you take the next step. Aries- (March 21st – April 19th) Make the next week all about wellness. Book a spa weekend, join a new fitness studio, cut back the carbs or quit smoking. Make a positive change right now before it’s too late. Taurus- (April 20th – May 20th) It is okay to think of that past embarrassing moment every once in a while, but don’t let it over rule you. Learn to laugh at yourself and move on from it. One trick to think about, it’ll all be a lost memory one day. Don’t let your past mistakes hurt you, learn from them. Gemini- (May 21st –June 20th) You’re a hard working person who is constantly trying to find new ways to get the job done. But through all that working remember to have some “me” time. Don’t forget about your needs when trying to complete these tasks. It’s okay to take a break. Cancer- (June 21st – July 22nd) Trying to talk your way out of tasks and obligations probably isn't the best way to win friends this week, Cancer. This is a time to get yourself right and take responsibility for your actions. The time you spend trying to weasel your way out of things is better spent just doing what you need to do.

Horoscopes September 2017 Let’s see what the stars have to say about your future today Leo- (July 23rd - August 22nd) You're super popular among your own crowd. Smile pretty for every picture! The Moon has a moody, dreamy effect on you on this week and it will be good to listen to your subconscious. Dreams may also have special meaning. Virgo- (August 23rd – September 22nd) It is important to know what you want. You might find yourself getting defensive when someone questions your motives. Wisdom says to think twice about your choices. When you are clear in your own heart, you will not be intimidated by challenges or negative feedback. Libra- (September 23rd – October 22nd) Spiritual themes are strong this week and can give you much-needed strength to cope with difficulties. Your favorite music, religious observations, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature can all have a positive influence on your mood. Scorpio- (October 23rd -November 21st) Focus on larger trends instead of getting caught up in the daily ups and downs. School gossip and petty ideas are likely to get you down if you let them. Turn your attention to something greater. Sagittarius- (November 22nd -December 21st) Try to remember this week that people aren’t possessions. It might hurt seeing your best friend hanging out with someone else, maybe a close family member. But just think, is it worth a fight, or should you just let it be instead of starting unneeded conflict? Capricorn- (December 22nd –January 19th) Your deepest emotional needs can come to the forefront with this week’s position of the stars. Your desire to have things balanced in your life might become upset by such emotional force, and it's important that you don't blame yourself when you feel out of whack. Be prepared and don’t let it take you by surprise if this happens.

In the kitchen Ingredients 1 box of Devil's Food Cake Mix (choose your favorite brand) 1/3 cup Vegetable Oil 2 large Eggs Confectioner's (icing) Sugar, enough for rolling the cookie dough in Procedure Preheat the oven to 375 F. Mix all the ingredients together (except the icing sugar) by hand until a dough forms. Shape the dough into balls at least 1 1/2 inch size. Use a rounded tablespoon for easier measurement. Scoop the dough and fill the tablespoon (use a measuring spoon not a serving spoon) to almost double the amount. To eliminate extra oil from the dough I roll them on a paper towel after shaping them. You can also leave them out to dry for about 10 minutes. This is to ensure that the sugar coating won't be totally absorbed by the oil while baking. Roll the balls in the confectioner's sugar. Be very generous with the coating, roll each dough ball a few times to ensure a thick coating; this will ensure the sugar prints will remain thus achieving that crinkle/crackled look. Place each ball about 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet(s). Bake for about 8-10 minutes or until just set. Remove from the cookie sheets after a couple of minutes and let cool on the wire rack completely. Enjoy while warm but it's still perfectly yummy even at room temp. These cookies Reference: www.manillaspoon.com retain their moisture even after a day or two.

Even though school has just started for most of us the WBHS Cheerleaders have been putting countless hours of hard work in over the summer. The Cheerleaders had to work really hard for their first time competing in the co-ed portion of their cheer camp competition. The hard work sure did pay off though because they received very good scores. They got 2017 UCA Co-ed Division Gameday Camp Champs, 1st place in sideline, 4 UCA All Americans ( Anna Morse, Jayna Crocker, Chloe Deerman, and Emma Hicks), and 1 Pin it Forward recipient (Justin Elam). Our beloved mascot Larry the Tiger received the Leadership Award in the Large Schools Division and was named a UCA All American Mascot for the 3rd year in a row! We are excited to see our cheerleaders take on their upcoming competitions. We wish you luck on Regionals, State, and hopefully Nationals! Article by: Senior Editor Morgan Harrison
