BUSINESS & ATHLETICS LIKE NEVER BEFORE 6-10 JULY 2016

2016 EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: FIVE DAYS OF PHENOMENAL TOP-LEVEL SPORTS In the summer of 2016, a new chapter will be written in the rich history of Dutch sports. From 6 to 10 July, the European Athletics Championships will be held on Dutch soil for the first time, in Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium. More than 1,300 athletes from 50 countries will come to compete in 44 events. The slogan ‘Athletics Like Never Before!’ will certainly live up to its promise. In this brochure, you can read more about this unique event, about sponsoring and hospitality opportunities and how you and your business relations/employees can participate in this European Athletics Championships in an exclusive manner.

THE EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS COME AT A GOOD TIME “When I won gold for the 800 metres at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, I could only dream of an event like this. The European or World Championships in Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium is one of the best championship events that a Dutch athlete could attend. And now it’s finally here! I finished my athletic career a long time ago, so this time I will be participating as a huge fan. The European Athletics Championships come at the right time. Athletics are on their way up and we belong to the international leaders in the sport. The recent successes at the European Athletics Championships in Zürich, where athletes like our own Dafne Schippers caught the whole world’s eye, are excellent examples. Our athletes are young, and they are very good! The slogan for the Championship in 2016 is: ‘Athletics like never before’, and we aim to prove it. With qualification rounds for javelin and discus throw at Amsterdam’s Museumplein, more fan enthusiasm in the stadium and attention paid to amateur sports and social issues, we will do everything we can to get the whole Dutch population moving. Issues like vitality, youth, health and exercise are inseparably linked to athletics, and will be the common thread throughout the European Athletics Championships programme. And for the first time, the runs for recreational athletes will also be linked to the European Athletics Championships Half Marathon! Young and old, business and pleasure; they all come together at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam!" Ellen van Langen, Event Ambassador 2016 European Athletics Championships and winner of the Gold medal for the 800 metres at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona

SUPPORTERS

“The European Athletics Championships in the Netherlands will undoubtedly be a wonderful happening, for both participants and visitors. I am also pleased that this event will raise awareness for healthy exercise.” Edith Schippers Minister of Public Health, Welfare & Sport

"You can’t repeat it enough: everything happens in Amsterdam. The European Athletics Championships in 2016 will be another good example of that. A new event at a historic spot, in a city with residents who really enjoy sports events like this one. Athletics fans from the Netherlands and all over Europe will certainly receive a heartfelt welcome.” Eberhard van der Laan Mayor of Amsterdam

“I am of course proud that we, in the Netherlands, can play such a prominent role at the highest level of European athletics. The fact that we can enjoy important European Athletics Championships events at home, right before the Olympic Games in Rio, is a major bonus.” Maurits Hendriks Technical Director NOC*NSF and Chef de Mission Rio 2016

“The European Athletics Championships will be another great challenge for the NOS. Dozens of disciplines all being held at the same time in the same stadium. That will make it a bit complicated. So we are going to use more than 70 cameras to make sure every image is fantastic. It will literally be “Athletics as never seen before!” And it all takes place in the most beautiful décors imaginable: the Olympic Stadium, the streets of Amsterdam and the Museumplein.” Jan de Jong General Director NOS

ATHLETICS IN THE NETHERLANDS FACTS & FIGURES Membership in the Atletiekunie (athletics association) has grown explosively over the past few years. Today, almost 150.000 people actively compete in athletics in more than 300 clubs around the country. Most of that growth is due to the number of runners. But in addition to those who are members of a club, there is an even larger group of unaffiliated runners in the Netherlands; 1.9 million people go running at least once per week. They run individually or in groups, during organised events or through parks and the countryside. They run regularly, or they occasionally participate in obstacle runs or fun running event, like the Color Run.

DUTCH CHAMPIONS No other sport in the world has as many practitioners as ‘the mother of all sports’, athletics. At major international sports events in 2014, the tiny country of the Netherlands has proven that it has a fantastic generation of top athletes. ‘Orange’ will be more than a match for its opponents; at the European Athletics Championships in 2016, but certainly a month later at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

THE QUEEN OF THE SPRINT At the European Athletics Championships held in Zürich in 2014, the Dutch team manifested itself as a world-class team that deserves the respect of fans and opponents alike. At the age of just 22, Dafne Schippers won gold at both the 100 metre and the 200 metre sprints, earning her the nickname ‘the Queen of Zürich’. Her success did not go unnoticed. In her home country, Schippers’ performance received an unprecedented amount of media attention. But even European Athletics named her the ‘European Athlete of the Year’. She was the first Dutch athlete to earn the prestigious title. Aficionados see her as the European answer to the dominance of the American and Jamaican sprinting elite. The Dutch runner is also praised for her versatility as an athlete, because she also competes in combined events at the international level. In 2013, she took the bronze for the heptathlon at the World Championships in Moscow.

Despite her young age, Sifan Hassan won gold for the 1500 metres and silver for the 5000 metres in Zürich. Fellow countrywoman Susan Kuijken followed Hassan to win the bronze medal for the 5000 metres as well. Reigning world champion for the indoor pentathlon, Nadine Broersen, took home the silver for the heptathlon in Switzerland. Dutch men’s athletics also has a standard bearer in Churandy Martina. Martina has not only proven himself as a world-class sprinter, but he is also a mentor and example for the new generation within the Dutch team, which is emulating his success.

During the Olympic Games in London in 2012, athletics was the sport with the highest television ratings. A number of athletics events even earned a spot in the NOS ratings top 100 for 2012. In 2013, the finals for the 100 metres at the Athletics World Championships was viewed by more than 2.146.000 people. 13

ATHLETICS LIKE NEVER BEFORE The Netherlands has never before hosted the European Athletics Championships. But that is not the only thing that makes this edition unique. The slogan ‘Athletics like never before’ applies to several special elements of the championships’ games.

The 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam will be a textbook example of how amateur sports can go hand-in-hand with top sports. For the first time, people will be able to actually participate in the event, not just watch it.

As a special event, a large run will be linked to the European Athletics Championships Half Marathon on 10 July. 25.000 people can register for the run along a unique course through Amsterdam’s city centre that makes the Amsterdam Marathon route pale in comparison. This is the opportunity to experience the European Athletics Championships in a uniquely physical manner, together with your friends, family or co-workers. Several other runs will be scheduled for the less experienced runners during the European Athletics Championships, varying from a 1km run for children to a 10km run and a number of ‘business runs’. For a whole week, young people can get a taste of the European Athletics Championships by participating in the unique introductory programme in and around the Olympic Stadium, the nearby Frans Otten stadium and several athletics clubs in Amsterdam.

BROOKS 10K CHAMPIONS RUN

You can’t start exercising early enough. The European Athletics Championships not only bring children into contact with top sports, but are also the ideal podium for discussing social issues such as sports and exercise. But the various Kids Runs that are scheduled for Wednesday during the European Athletics Championships are mainly just an activity for young people.

Going running with your co-workers is an increasingly popular activity among companies. These events can vary from an informal running group after office hours, to fanatical employees who train together with a coach to prepare for a marathon. With the Run to The Start programme, you can prepare properly for the Business Run on Thursday during the European Athletics Championships.

A new trend in running involves runs with a twist or a special ‘tint’. The Color, Obstacle, Electric and Student Runs are excellent examples. These kinds of initiatives appeal to many young people, and reflect Amsterdam’s outspoken personality. These events will add some colour to the European Athletics Championships on Friday.

On Sunday 10 July thousands of recreational runners will invade Amsterdam to participate in a unique run. A course through the city centre of Amsterdam will be especially designed for the European Athletics Championships. Once the athletes have commenced their run, around 25.000 participants will be given the opportunity to run a 10km run.

20

PARTICIPATE BROOKS 10K CHAMPIONS RUN

For the first time, the runs for recreational athletes will also be linked to the official European Athletics Championships Half Marathon. On Sunday, 10 July, the best long-distance runners in Europe will compete for gold, while thousands of trained amateurs try to push themselves to the limit during a 10km run. So even you can sign up to compete alongside the 2016 European Athletics Championships! 21

EXPERIENCE OLYMPIC STADIUM RADIO

MARKET SQUARE

Inside the stadium, spectators sit within arm’s reach of the action. But many events are scheduled to run simultaneously. To help you keep track of what’s going on, a special radio and mobile app will provide commentary on every event. That way, you can stay informed of live competition. The radio feature is under construction and shall be drawn up by European Athletics.

WiFi in and around the stadium will help you follow everything that happens at the European Athletics Championships. In fact, a free WiFi network will be installed specifically for that purpose. Your smartphone will act as an extra guide for the daily programme, with interesting data, interviews, videos and highlights.

Extra-large screens in the stadium and outside will keep spectators up to date about the events with images and alerts. They can also be used after the programme to watch the UEFA Euro 2016 football matches, which will take place the same week.

The Market Square is an ideal place to take a break from the stadium and stretch your legs. Get to know culinary surprises, see how well you would do in the athletics events or find the perfect outfit for your next physical challenge. For the whole week, it will be Amsterdam’s favourite place to hang out.

22

EXPERIENCE OLYMPIC STADIUM ENTERTAINMENT

AWARD CEREMONY

ATHLETICS MOVEMENTS

Athletics is a sport, but it is also a spectacular show. These three elements will naturally be reflected in the entertainment programme. Performances, music, culture and lots of show elements will offer athletics fans even more reason to come to the event.

During the event, fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the heroes and heroines of the European Athletics Championships up close. But this time, the medal winners will be acclaimed even outside the stadium, on a special podium in the FanSune.

In the lead-up to the European Athletics Championships and during the event itself, the Athletics Movements programme will familiarise schoolchildren with athletics and healthy exercise. Athletics Movements was developed specifically for primary school children aged 6 to 12 in order to promote better exercise and help children with the development of their motor skills. The lesson programme consists of a number of fun elements, and is based on learning goals for the basic skills of jumping, throwing/catching and running. The activities will take place in and around the stadium and at local athletics clubs.

23

COMMUNICATE MEDIA The Netherlands will definitely know that the European Athletics Championships are in town. The media will devote considerable effort to the event. But Amsterdam as a whole will also exude a sense of enthusiasm and passion for athletics during the week of the European Athletics Championships. Hundreds of million throughout Europe will watch the Championships on television. Dutch and international media will highlight every aspect of the European Athletics Championships. Hundreds of journalists from all over Europe will come to Amsterdam to report on the events. The regional broadcaster AT5/RTV Noord-Holland will also be present, broadcasting live reports from the location.

Amount of cameras

35

But the European Athletics Championships will not be the sole focus of attention; even the many amateur sports events will receive plenty of publicity. As the host broadcaster, the NOS will provide the camera work for the European Athletics Championships. The public broadcaster will place a crew of 300 people, 7 production control cars and more than 75 cameras to provide a live programme each day, from the studio and live on location, and then provide the recordings to over 35 international broadcasters. The five days of European Athletics Championships are good for 40 hours of live television. As per illustration, the ECH 2014 in Zürich were watched by an European television audience of 538 million people. ‘The use of a rail camera, that reaches a speed of 55km/per hour, flycams that float above the track and high speeds slowmotions shall increase engagement of the tv-viewer,’ reports the NOS.

SPONSORING & HOSPITALITY Dutch athletics is experiencing a wonderful period of growth. Becoming a partner or sponsor of the 2016 European Athletics Championships means helping the Netherlands keep moving and be a part of a success story.
