MY VIEUW ON THE RELATION BETWEEN JORDANS PLEASURES AND MASLOW’S HIERACHY OF NEEDS JORDANS PLEASURES Jordans pleasures are 4 pleasures wherein you can group most pleasures you can get from a product. These are Physio, Socio, Psycho, and Ideo pleasures. In the next chapter:”Analysis of a valued object in terms of Jordans Pleasures” you can read more about it.
MASLOWS HIERACHY OF NEEDS Abraham Maslow developed the Hierarchy of Needs model in 1940-50’s. This model is still valid today for understanding human motivation. His hierarchy of needs exist out of five stages. You have to read this model from bottom to the top. They describe the human needs in relation to each other. For example, if don’t have air or food you don’t care that much about protection and law.
THE RELATION BETWEEN PHYSIO PLEASURES I think these types of pleasures relate to the first 2 layers of the Hierarchy. The Biological, physiological and safety needs. For example, the feeling you get from eating is a fulfilment of a sensory and a physical need. Enough sleep also gives you a sensory feedback, all your senses work better, you are more alert.
SOCIO PLEASUERS

I think these kinds of pleasures are related the belongings and loved ones middle layer. This is because the pleasures you get from a relationship and the society, are related to socio pleasures.
PSYCHO PLEASURES I think these kinds of pleasures are related to esteem needs. Because feeling responsible is a cognitive and emotional feeling, this is related to psycho pleasures.
IDEO PLEASURES WHAT DOES JORDAN MEANS BY NEED PLEASURES AND PLEASURES OF APPRECIATION? NEED PLEASURES “ (Jordan, 2002)These are pleasures that occur by moving a person from a state of discontentment to one of contentment” For example the satisfaction you get from drinking when you are really thirsty.
PLEASURES OF APPRICIATION “ (Jordan, 2002) These are those that occur because a person finds something positively pleasurable no Mather what their current level of contentment is” In other words these are pleasures with no need to be fulfilled in the beginning; you drink a glass of Coca-Cola just because you love the taste, not because you are thirsty at that moment.
ANALYSIS OF A VALUED OBJECT IN TERMS OF JORDAN’S PLEASURES INTRODUCTION For the first assignment day we had to choose a object and analyse it in terms of interaction based on the 4 pleasures of Jordan. To gain knowledge about these pleasures we read the first chapters of the book: “Design pleasurable products” as an introduction to the new human factors. From Patric. W Jordan. When I had to decide which product I would pick I thought that it would be good to begin with a product with a lot of interaction with it. I choose therefore my IPod Touch 2g. This is an MP3 player with a lot of extra functionality. It is almost the same as an IPhone but the only functionality it misses compared to the IPhone is making phone calls, GPS, and the camera.
PHYSIO PLEASURES: These are the pleasures related with the body and with pleasures derived from the sensory organs. This is how things feel, taste and smell. You can think of how a product feels when you touch it, the smell of a product when you just bought it.
IPOD TOUCH: When I hold my iPod touch it feels good in the hand because, the weight is just good. It is not to heavy that it feels robust, but also not to light that it feels that it could brake. ( this could also be a Ideo pleasure) The edges are round so you won’t hurt yourself with sticky edges. The surface feels very sleek, it attracts to touch it. Without looking at it you can find the places where the buttons are because they stick out a little. This is fine 5|P a g e
Tijmen van Gurp B2.1

for the interaction because, you don’t have to search for the buttons, and it is for example possible to press the volume button through your pocket.
SOCIO PLEASURES: These are the pleasures related with the enjoyment derived from relations with others. These relations can be with friends, loved ones, and colleagues. But also the whole society, thereby you can think of status and self image. There are products that facilitate social interactions, for example a coffee maker can work as a meeting point in the morning. Extrovert products that pay a lot attention can be a start for a conversation, and there are also products that you can associate with a bigger group, for example skaters, Yuppies etc.
IPOD TOUCH: One really important thing for me for buying this iPod was that I was able to keep my calendar up to date and that I have it always with me. This relates to socio pleasures in a way that in this way I never forget meetings with other people. Another thing is that it keeps me in contact with my friends, colleagues, family and other related persons because I have access to the internet. I use it for mail, Twitter, FaceBook, Skype and LinkedIn. In terms of status there is also something to say, I can say that it doesn’t matter me but I would like it if someone is curious about what kind of device I have. Or what kind of Apps I have.
PSYCHO PLEASURES These are the pleasures related to people’s cognitive and emotional reactions. In relation to products this might include issues relating to the cognitive demands of using the products. Does the product have errors? Is everything working logically? Is the system working to your demands?
IPOD TOUCH: I like the fact that this system only has one button to return to the main menu, and that the rest works dynamically. That makes it possible that there are programs to your preferences. For example I think that games belong in this category, because they are cognitive and emotional stimulating, especially games which use the accelerometer can be challenging. I like it how good the touch screen works. There is no delay in it which gives you the feeling that you have control over the product. Once you know one thing about how it works you know the rest as well so the learn ability is really good. I don’t need to press a lot of buttons for most of the tasks on this iPod so I think this system works efficient.
IDEO PLEASURES These are the pleasures that are related to people’s values. These are for example things that people made, books, music and arts related things. In terms of products this relates to the aesthetics of a product and the values that a product embodies. For example a product made from biodegradable materials can embody the value of environmental responsibility.
IPOD TOUCH: I think that for the iPod touch the most related thing in this category is music. It makes me able to carry all my music with me wherever I want. And not only music, also video and pictures. In terms of aesthetics I thing the

designers made a good job designing this thing. It is so small that I loose it sometimes between my books. The screen is really robust which makes it easy to carry around without having to worry about scratches.
DESCRIPTION OF AFFINITY DIAGRAMMING EXERCISE INTRODUCTION In this assignment we had to interview 6 people about their mobile phones to find relevant dimensions for appreciation of interactive products. Combining the results of the interviews with a affinity diagramming exercise we were able to group different dimensions to get the product image of a mobile phone. This exercise was meant to be a set up for further research where we would had to find out what properties of their mobile phones relating to congruity are relevant to appreciation. The congruity theory is as follows:”people prefer products the image of which is consistent with their self-concept.” Because a mobile phone holds so many aspects we expected that wouldn’t find new glues in this congruity theory than in the previous assignment. We decided to do another exercise wherein we had to design 2 different mobile phones with 2 different kind of personality’s.
INTERVIEUWS For this assignment I only used the data of 4 interviews instead if 6, but that was already enough to distinguish relevant dimensions. I didn’t prepare specific questions for these interviews because I expected that all the mobile phones would be different in interaction. I decided to ask them questions within the 4 kinds of pleasures of Jordan.

AFFINITY DIAGRAMMING Affinity diagramming is a tool to organize ideas and data. This affinity diagram was devised by Jiro Kawakita in the 1960’s. We did this as follows. We cut out all the different aspects out the mobile phone questionnaires. And we started to search for relations between the cards. In the end we had 10 tiles of which could be grouped together under one name.
RESULTS FROM THAT DIAGRAM These where the different groups we found in our group. In the discussion later on we putted some things together. Overall these categories were not really surprising, but good to know that you can find these categories in this way. • •

2 PHONE DESIGNS, 2 OPPISITES IN TERMS OF PERSONALITY
INTRODUCTION For this assignment we had to design the looks and the interaction of a mobile phone for 2 different personality’s. I shoes to make a extrovert and a introvert mobile phone.
CHOICE INTROVERT EXTROVERT I started with this exercise in the train where I had only access to my mail and had because of that only access to a few personality’s. It would have been better if had looked into it a bit further because than I would know what kind of sub categories there are within extroversion. Because I never designed a mobile phone before I first wrote down for myself what extrovert and introvert would be. Somebody who is extrovert wants to show who he or she is with objects from outside. This person wants to show the world that it is there. An extrovert person wants to spend time with people, and doesn’t like it that much to spend time alone. Somebody who is introvert is someone more turned into himself. He or she is a more silence person, and doesn’t want to show off to others. They prefer to concentrate on single activities at a time. They like to observe situations before participating. It says more about their social preferences than if they are shy or not. To transform these aspects of Extrovert and Introvert I had to take design decision rapidly and most of them based on common sense. I want to tell shortly which steps I took.

What does introvert and extrovert mean for mobile phones?
I first tried to find as much mobile phones on the internet as possible to see differences in the designs. I think that these to collages speak for themselves if you had to say which is extrovert and which is introvert.

After figuring out what the basic looks could be I got lost in designing an interface. I misjudged the assignment on how much time it could take to how something could look like. I made a lot of sketches to get a form of this particularity kind of phone in the hand.
I also did some study’s on how an extrovert phone could look like
After these sketches I put in further details of the mobile phones. I tried to build it further in flash, but I noticed that I wasn’t that fast in the program. Later on in the presentations when I saw other techniques to show the

interaction I learned that I was taking the difficult road, and I was putting too much detail in the design. Instead of the interaction. .

REFLECTION: DISCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT When looking back at this assignment it is not immediately clear for me what I learned although I know that I have picked up a lot of it. The structure of this assignment was based on new reading material every week, a presentation by Jacques Terken, small assignments and discussions. For me personally I didn’t received enough feedback on my process to experience a learning curve. In the end the practical things we did were the most valuable tools for me to learn. I liked it to experience a difference between the other assignments and I think it is good that we also experience more academically reading. But to see the value of the articles I would like to have more practise with it. Because of that I think it would be good to go through this report sometimes during a project.
WHAT DID I LEARN My vision of what a product means to the user became a little less black and white threw this assignment. I found out that there is a lot to find out what people want, and do and why they want it. One reason to buy a particular product is not only how it works, but this can also be the product is in status, the effectiveness, or the extra functions. If other people own it as well, or in form it fits with your personality. I now know the difference between a need pleasure and a Pleasure of appreciation. With a product, there are some things that you expect it to do, like a phone calls, I would consider this need as a need pleasures. Or other things such as that the look and feel is beautiful and shiny this is a pleasure of appreciation. To find out what the main need properties should be of a certain product, we learned a number of techniques. Firstly the hierarchy of Needs tells you that a specific pleasure can only be experienced in a product if the pleasures of the lower layers are not given first it is not useful for you to focus on the rest. To determine the categories for a product interest, we used affinity diagramming. From these results, you can manage a list of things that users find important. To determine what kinds of pleasures are related to these products you need to do a group congruency test with data which you can collect from extra questionnaires based on human personalities. In this way users can say how much the product relates a certain personality trait. But due to the reasons that we took cell phones in general, we realized there were too many differences to establish good enough results for a congruency test we thus wondered if we took ourselves as a test person if we would find congruencies. Therefore we had to do an assignment and make 2 mobile phones with 2 personality’s who are opposite from each other. This assignment was a great challenge because the design of a mobile has more to it than I initially thought. I went too deep into detailing the esthetics which made the interaction not very clear. For me the goal was not entirely clear until I saw the results from the other students. I noticed that the simplest interactions were far beyond the summit where exaggerated personality traits were recognized. But the more complete designs were difficult to define because they looked more general and therefore they hold more personality’s in them. The group of personality characteristics of a more complete design was a quite good description of the interaction you experienced. I've noticed that the interaction properties of the product show much more properties of the product than just the looking’s. For example a childish character is easily portrayed by using the laugh or the giggle of a child. I was sorry that we did not get the opportunity during the assignment to do this over again because I would have liked it show some progress. Next time it would be much simpler with more interaction and design in a 16 | P a g e

s081936
program that I know well such as PowerPoint. For the exterior, I think I would have a whole series of sketches which would describe the product best, instead of making only final design in a few hours. Through this, the design of the cell phone will not only be based on quick design decision purely based on intuition but also on a iterative reflective design process.
In the future I would especially use practical tools used in the design process and I will always carry the knowledge about different kinds of personality traits in relation to a product, the congruence theory and the hierarchy of Needs with me. There is endless literature to find which I can now search for if I need this in future projects. I really enjoyed writing this reflection because actually, just now do I realize all that I learned over the course of this quartile. Thank you for reading With kind Regards Tijmen van Gurp
