Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?) Throughout this project I intend to explore the Chinese legend ‘Journey to the West, and see where this can be applied within the tea industry. Chinese tea is a huge part of their culture, and is something that interests me greatly, and something I know quite a bit about. If I can tie these themes together, I could create something collectable, that works as a set and could potentially be applies anywhere. I essentially want to brand my own tea business, promoting beautifully tasting loose leaf teas. The illustrations I intend to apply will be suitable to be applied in a variety of places, so that if the business was to grow, the work could be used for merchandise, promotional advertisements, and for a wider business concept, such as coffee, café designs etc.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES:

Chinese culture and history -represented in an elegant and contemporary way.

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:

Loose Leaf quality tea Journey to the West

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs. SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Product and packaging Design AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: Tea drinkers- those that are passionate about loose leaf tea. Non- tea drinkers- My aim will be to make the packaging so interesting and informative that it encourages people to drink more tea. The tea I will be promoting will be healthy and delicious, which could appeal to a large market. Anyone interested in the Chinese legends. PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: To make it collectable I aim to make a collection. Illustrate onto small information cards that will have facts about each loose leaf tea. Characters from the book will be assigned to different teas, and there will be an illustrated tea box for each. Small bags with loose leaf tea in each. A small catalogue of teas, something you can read before you buy. Distribution methods would include advertisements, perhaps in the form of posters. Distribute these high market products in supermarkets, health food shops, café’s and restaurants etc. This idea also has the potential to reach bars, as cocktails can be made from some of the fruit teas. CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: Ardigraph- Tea packaging design P4CK- Inventors of packaging solutions Gabriela Racines- Illustration work for Waykana Guayusa tea Typical. Organization- branding for New Tea Ceremony Brett Ryder- illustrated packaging for Dr stuart’s tea

CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

- I don’t know much about product and packaging, so I would like to gain a good understanding of the professional side of this. I will look into various packaging methods and learn what will work best for my particular idea. I would like to create a range of products, not just loose leaf tea packaging, but create something that had the potential to be applied in a number of places. - My photoshop skills will have to improve during this module, as I’m certain this will be the most practical way of creating the packaging mock ups. Promoting my products in the best possible way will also be something I aim to learn more about, and how effectively I can do this. -I would also like to keep my own values at the heart of this project, so propose that the packaging will be eco-friendly, recyclable, and also made from recycled materials. I want to maintain a sustainable approach throughout my practice as best as possible.
