Documenting Dad • ROUGHS AND DEVELOPMENT AND IDEAS
After a slight creative block, I had a really great tutorial with Matt, which really gave me some direction of how to approach my fmp. Theory As I have discussed in previous posts, I want to feed more theory into this project. The idea of flow theory will be explored, and fed into the work that I produce. The idea of play, and open and closed modes of creativity will also be considered when creating roughs and finals for this documentary piece. To start off with all of these thoughts in mind, I decided to play with the same image repeatedly. By doing this I was instantly in the open mode of creativity. I wasn’t worried about the outcome, just the process by which each image was created. Being experimental with media and approach was an extremely useful way to visualise potential outcomes and styles. Ideas I think the best way to approach this brief, is to document all of the things my Dad does or has done. But rather than call it ‘documenting dad’, I’ll call it something like ’The man that was never bored’- this way its not just personal to me, but will be something that a wider audience can connect with. I want to ask various people that know him to share a short story or a thought about him, so it will have an empathetic and personal tone that runs throughout, but by making a story about a man, rather than my dad, offers the viewer the chance to learn about a mans life and empathise or relate to. (I hope that makes sense)
I want to work with a more realistic approach, but I do really like this style. I wouldn’t have reached this style if I hadn’t allowed myself to play with process in the open mode. I might try to work with the two, perhaps screen print something like this and work digitally with the line work. Something like this would transfer well into screen print, will have to give it a go.
Trying to convey nostalgia with marks, media and colour. This is the house my Dad built, and what we all call home. I wanted to convey that as best as possible.
Working with minimal marks. Trying to see if limited lines communicate as much as something detailed or finished. What is the least I can draw whilst still communicating the same image effectively. Playing with this idea helped me to repeat and work quickly. Ive been struggling to keep things minimal lately, so this was a good exercise.
Moving forward- keep playing in sketchbook. Great place for idea generation and visualizing. PLAY PLAY PLAY. Work with detailed line drawings and the wavey style - by doing this I will show the ability to tackle the same brief with varying styles, and how a style can change the tone of a piece completely. Hopefully.
