e n i w , o rt a Esp and oil
By Chris Thompson
Life in 1950s Britain was pretty grim for many people – ringworm, houses with only cold running water and outside toilets. I just about remember it and I’m sure some of you do too. Imagine living in Pinoso, or anywhere in inland Alicante, in the same period. Think how isolated the place must have been with only dirt roads, no cars to speak of and no electricity. You couldn’t make a living then by selling houses or designing websites. Three key local industries were wine, olive oil and esparto. Olive oil is still produced in inland Alicante. In Pinoso I think we have two oil presses, or almazaras, one at Casas Ibañez and one in Culebrón. Olive oil production hasn’t changed much in hundreds of years. Basically the olives are washed, crushed and then spread on woven fibre discs which are squeezed to press out the oil. Wine continues to be a big industry although the donkeys mules and carts have been replaced with trailers and tractors. Some farmers still prefer to pick the grapes by hand but most have changed to mechanical harvesters. These shake the vines so the grapes drop onto a conveyor belt that takes them to a holding bin inside the harvester. No more collecting the grapes in big woven baskets. The cottage industry earthenware tiñajas down in the cellars to store the wine have been replaced with temperature controlled stainless steel fermenting tanks and oak barrels. The initial pressing of the grapes wasn’t done by hand it was done by foot; by stomping on the grapes wearing alpargatas the local woven soled shoes. Those alpargatas, very similar to the jute soled espadrilles, the baskets slung across the donkey’s back and the fibre discs were all made of esparto. Esparto type products can be made from various grasses but the local one, logically enough, is called esparto. In fact esparto was used to make hundreds of things on the same principal that once made oats a staple of Scottish diets. It was to hand. The esparto grass was collected and damaged stems discarded. Next it was dried for forty days in the sun until it was golden brown. The dried grass was then wetted again so it recovered its flexibility. There were two main esparto production methods. In the first the grass was wetted for a couple of days and then braided into wide strips by plaiting between thirteen and nineteen strands. The second was to leave the grass to soak for forty days before beating it with a wooden stick on a tree trunk to separate the individual fibres of the grass. This crushed esparto could then be woven into different plaits using anything from three to eight strands. Distinct braids were used to make different products, or different parts of the same finished item, with the braids being sewn or woven together to give the right shape. Esparto items are still produced on an industrial scale but lots of the everyday items have been replaced by cheaper, better or more durable products. Hobbyists and craftspeople still make esparto products in the traditional way which is why they’re occasionally on sale at the town market and always at the craft fairs and mediaeval markets. So the next time you buy an esparto mat or basket remember you’re buying a product as traditional as the glass of monastrell I’m sipping as I type.

JAGUARS Palmeras and Pussycats
The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain just goes from strength to strength. The club is just coming up to it’s third anniversary. We have something special planned for that anniversary meeting so why not come and join us. Our last meeting was on Sunday the 27th April, and was held at Las Palmeras, hotel and restaurant in Crevellente. Our first time at this venue and what a lovely surprise. I have to say. Las Palmeras is a little lacking as far as “kerb appeal” is concerned but the restaurant, function rooms and the terrace and pool areas are stunning. On top of that, there are plenty of parking spaces for our beloved Jaguars. We were blessed with yet another beautiful sunny day, we are so lucky. On arrival, most people congregated around the pool terrace, a few G&T’s, a beer or two, coke of course for us drivers, or just a tonic, slice of lemon! Great to meet our old friends again. We sat down for lunch just before 2:00pm in a private function room overlooking the pool, very nice. Hot bread, garlic and tomato to start, a plate of succulent ham and Manchego cheese then a choice of starters, I had a thick, flavour- some vegetable soup, lovely, many of the health conscious had the tuna salad, presented in the “deconstructed style”. Fish, lamb chops or pork for the main course or for a small supplement a solomillo which was my choice, delightful. I have to compliment the staff at Las Palmeras, the service was absolutely spot on. Wine flowed freely during all the courses. Desserts, coffee’s then outside for the obligatory “group photo”. Back to the terrace, for a little more light refreshment. Las Palmeras brought us all complimentary chopitos, of what I have no idea but lets say, I think I could have fired up my V8 on just the fumes. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 58 people and 18 cars. I am pleased to say, among the attendees were many of the old favourites and some new member’s cars as well. I have to say, when you looked at them all lined up it was a fabulous sight to behold. An art show in steel and leather which included some of the most iconic example of automotive art ever made. The meeting also held a few surprises, apparently, in recognition of my hard work in forming a running the club, it was decided that I should be elevated from Chairman to President (El Presidente) of the club, also, apparently it is more apt for the Spanish environment. Ian McMenemy was promoted from Events Manager to Events Director in recognition for the fantastic job he does in organising our events. Satisfied and satiated, some members started to depart just before 5:00pm however some of us were still there at 6:00pm - what a great day. Our next meeting is provisionally planned for Sunday the 8th June, venue and exact menu still to be finalised. This will be the meeting that celebrates our third anniversary. If you own a Jaguar in Spain, come and join us. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, members also benefit from a glossy 132 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold and Ian McMenemy. Eric can be contacted by email at jaguarspain@outlook.com or by phone on 609931647 or alternatively check out www.jec-spain.es or the JEC main web site www.jec.org.uk. Our Events director, Ian McMenemy can be contacted at McMenemy@JEC-events.com. Not forgetting David Shea who looks after our Facebook identity and John Parkin who manages our dedicated web site www.jecspain.es

. L A C I G O L C CY Cycle Route 5
Quesada to Pedrera reservoir and Torremendo via Vistabella.
Leave Quesada by the Arches go round the large roundabout and come off at the cycle track which runs along the side of the dual carriageway towards Torrevieja but instead of going on the cycle track take the tarred road that runs parallel to the right of it along past Alonso’s car garage. Stay on this Camino / Canal road ( the canal is to your left under the concrete slabs ) and pass over a hump back bridge just before you enter Urbanisation La Herrada. Carry straight on through La Herrada straight on at the roundabouts until you come to signs saying Camino / Canal road no entry carry straight on until you come to a main road junction ( which is the main road to Zoco Market ) go straight across and again follow the Camino road to the next junction . This time turn right ( this is the main road to Algorfa and La Finca ) and cycle for 1.2kms uphill past a large faded sign saying Contra Vega and a few street lights , pass over the AP7 and then about 200metres on your left you will see the start of the canal road . This time the canal is open. You will see count down markers on the side of the canal starting at 5.1km and are at 100 metre intervals all the way past Entre Naranjos to a pumping station . At this pumping station turn right and head uphill for about 1 km then as the road bends round to the left follow it and it joins a dirt track which takes you all the way to the car park of the restaurant La Fortaleza in Vistabella. Brilliant place to stop for a Tapas and a Beer or a coffee. Turn right at the car park and cycle for approx 250 metres on the road then turn left at the sign for Pedrera/ Torremendo and cycle slightly uphill till you can see the lake which is a magnificent turquoise colour for most of the year. This lake is a large reservoir which supplies most of the local area with water. Once you see the lake just stay on this road all the way around it enjoying the breath taking scenery, keep on this road circumnavigating the lake. You will come to a T-junction turn left here and just keep following the road until you come to the village of Torremendo this is a lovely little picturesque village withsome nice restaurants and tapas bars to stop and refresh yourself at. If you turn left at the roundabout there is a nice little church in the centre of the village. Once you are refreshed just follow the road all the way back through a small urbanization and down towards the CV95 San Miguel road. Approx 100 metres before the road you will come to the canal turn left here and follow the canal for a few kms then back across the Cv95 heading towards Entre Naranjos, cross over the next road and follow the canal back to the pumping station where you turn right and you should recognize where you are. Follow your earlier route and just head back home in the opposite direction. Total Cycling Time : 4 Hours | Total Distance : 48kms Summary: One of our favourite routes, lovely quiet canal all the way to really quiet roads around the gorgeous blue lake with stunning views. All routes are now available from our website: www.cyclogicalcostablanca. com and from our newly published book “ Cycling tips and Advice” with 20 cycle routes around the Costa Blanca. Gary and Lynn are available at Cyclogical in Quesada Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10am till 2pm on Saturdays to assist and advise you on all you’re cycling requirements.
You will always receive a warm welcome from bar Desireé. See our advert on the opposite page.

T.I.M Magazine
My star is in the ascendency. Last month I got some fan mail, I use the word “some” in its loosest possible term as actually I got one e-mail. However, when in Pinoso recently I overheard a lady who had just picked up her new copy of TIM say to her friend “I always read Marty Funkhauser first”. She may well have gone on to say “because I hate him” but I’m counting her as a fan as well so this month’s piece is dedicated to you two. A couple of months ago I remember writing about Flight MH370 that went missing whilst flying over the Indian Ocean; well, it’s still missing. You may have thought that it had been found as it is so rarely mentioned on the news. What actually happened is on March 17; the Crimean Parliament declared independence from Ukraine and asked to join the Russian Federation. You may want to read that last sentence again to make sure it’s not a printing error. It is not a printing error, it’s quite simple, rolling news channels got bored with the search for the 239 passengers and switched their attention to Putin/Yanukovych. You would be forgiven for thinking that there is now peace in Syria; forgiven but unfortunately wrong, it’s worse than ever in Syria but that also has been declared boring because, yes you guessed it, 239 passengers went missing on Flight MH370. As summer is approaching I guess that Vladimir Putin is sat in the gardens of his Dacha thanking the heavens above for Max Clifford and Rolf Harris. What I am attempting to explain is that we are controlled by the media and they select the news items. 24 hour news has made everything even worse as often there is simply not enough news to talk about so we
8
are taken too far off places to see a reporter trying to make David Cameron tying his left shoelace interesting. If you will allow me to return to Rolf Harris for a moment I actually suspected all was not well in Rolfland when he brought out the Stylophone. Ok, ok it wasn’t his invention and it came out several years before Rolf got hold of it and is actually used on David Bowie’s Space Oddity album. So let’s go back over the facts, Exhibit A: The Stylophone Exhibit B: Two Little Boys; I rest my case. There are few tears being shed for Max Clifford even his wife who stood by him so loyally has bolted for the exit doors. Clifford is an arrogant obnoxious so and so, and I have little time for the long-suffering wives who stand gallantly beside their men until the jail sentence is passed allowing them to piss off without financial penalty. Imagine how much worse things would be for Rolf if his wife served him with divorce papers during the trial? One can only come to the conclusion that vast sums of cash are involved. Finally, I sat through the recent Political Party Broadcast on behalf of the BNP; we live in a democracy and they have the right to be heard and we have the right to listen or not but if we don’t listen then we won’t know. So, here is what I now know, Nick Griffin has single handedly brought peace to Syria, it’s true, it must be as I heard it directly from the BNP. Now here is what I really know, the BNP are hopefully the only party who are disgusting enough to beg for votes on the back of the death of Lee Rigby, you cannot get any lower than the depths they have plummeted to. Thanks for reading.

TIM Magazine™ First, congratulations to Terri Wakelin who won last month’s “Gadgets in film” competition with her detailed description of how to ruin Snow White! Your USB memory stick is on its way to you. This month, travel! Want to watch the planes coming in to Alicante or Murcia airports? Loved ones on the flight, and you want to make sure they arrive safely (or the in-laws, and you want to make sure they leave!), then http:// www.radarbox24.com/ is a great live website tracking all the planes in the air at any one time. You can search for a specific flight, or, if you are like me, you can stare for ages, amazed that the air can take that many aeroplanes at one time (remind me never to be an air traffic controller!). This site allows you to click on a specific plane, and see almost everything there is to know about it – a photo, actual speed, height, and even squawk (whatever that means!!). There are of course, loads of other options out there, and many airlines have their own. If you are booking a flight, rather than the direct approach (through the airlines website), try using the broker websites. A couple of these are: www.skyscanner.net or www.travelsupermarket.com to name but two. These show you prices across the board, and can save you a few euros by comparing times, prices and changeovers. Can I use my gadget on the plane? Of course, if you are on a flight, there are now some gadgets you can use on a plane. Since October 2013, the FAA ruled that gadgets pose “little to no threat” to modern planes, although it’s up to individual airlines to decide on their own specific policy – so although below is a guideline, you would still need to check the specifics with your own airline (I have checked the details with Ryanair, Easyjet and Jet2). Smartphones, e-readers, tablets & hand held game consoles: Yes – you are allowed to use these, including at takeoff and landing (in technical terms, the FAA specify this as planes below 10,000 feet). You are not allowed to have “data” turned on (i.e. mobiles still need to be in “flight” mode), but you can have Wi-Fi on. Laptops and other “large” gadgets: Sorry everyone, you still have to have these put away for takeoff and landing. Oddly, this is NOT because of a technical problem, it’s just they are deemed too large, and can cause a risk in the case of an emergency. To make it easier, I have put the information into a grid.
That’s all for this month. If you have any suggestions for future topics, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. 10

Agony or Glory?
Rob Innis previews the 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals
Do you want to try to turn 1 pound into 33 pounds – how? Easy, place a bet on England to win the World Cup. Yes, incredibly 4 years have drifted past since Spain beat the Netherlands in a hard fought (almost literally) final to win the last football World Cup, held in South Africa. Rather ironically, their first match is against the same opponents (Group B, June 13th) The 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 20th competition, is being hosted by Brazil who are, unsurprisingly, the favourites. They would only make you 3 pounds but of course could be a safer bet as they have already won the competition 5 times. To-date when it has been played in South America a South American team has always been victorious. Anyway, the fabulous game is not all about making money, well, maybe for players, managers and agents....... So let us look at this summer’s football feast. It all kicks off in Sao Paulo on June 12th with the hosts playing outsiders Croatia in Group A. Holders Spain, despite winning the last three major international football tournaments, are only ranked fourth favourites by the bookies. Maybe the South American venue and the ageing Spanish team have been figured into their odds calculations. However, I would not write them off. England, the only UK side to qualify, have a tough qualifying group taking on Italy, losing Euro 2012 finalists, Uruguay who will be fielding Liverpool’s top scorer Suarez and Costa Rica – who should not be under-rated having previously qualified for 4 World Cup finals.
The English FA have placed their faith on experienced veteran manager Roy Hodgson. Hopefully he can inspire better team performances than were managed in 2010 in South Africa under the previous regime. At time of writing, the final squad has not been selected but some players who probably would have been on the plane to Brazil have been ruled out through injury including Southampton’s top scorer Jay Rodriguez and ex-Saint Theo Walcott. Thirty-two teams will start the tournament playing in eight groups of four teams, final group matches scheduled on June 26th. Then the knockout stages will commence - ending with the final being played on Sunday 13th July in Rio de Janerio. Do not forget to put the important dates in your diary and book the remote control. Brazil has been making huge investments in new stadiums and major refurbishments of others plus infrastructure upgrades to stage this major world event. A far cry since the last time they hosted way back in 1950. They will also host the 2016 Olympics placing Brazil firmly in the world’s limelight. Whilst the top countries can call on a vast array of highly paid football stars playing in leagues all around the world what about the lowly ranked minnows? Well in this context Australia is a minnow being ranked 57th in the world and so the total outsiders. Other low ranking finalists include Iran (49th) and Japan (44th). The only debutant is Bosnia-Herzegovina – but they are ranked 16th. So, who will grab centre stage? Will Ronaldo lead Portugal to glory, or will Messi, his archrival in Spain, playing for Argentina, upstage him. He sometimes struggles to produce his best form for his country. Can England surprise us or will they be on the plane home early? Will Brazil cruise it or will the Germans have a say. Do not forget Belgium or France, both fielding experienced teams or can an African team grab some glory. Love it or hate it football is now a global game generating huge revenues mainly from sponsorship and TV coverage. Talking of which let us hope the TV schedule is not disrupted by the usual antics of satellite changes and other technical gremlins. So, whomever you will be cheering on – enjoy the spectacle or if you are opting out do not forget to use a good factor sun cream. Finally, football has a reputation for generating some ‘interesting’ comments:
Just for fun quiz question
Ronaldo on Brazil’s defeat to France in the 1998 World Cup final: “We lost because we didn’t win”
In over 500 competitive gam es Gary Lineker ne ver received what? See answer on the Fun Page 12
(The late) Sir Bobby Robson after playing Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup: “We didn’t underestimate them. They were just a lot better than we thought.” Last word to BBC’s football guru Gary Lineker, after losing the 1990 World Cup semi-final to Germany on penalties: “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.” (Obviously forgotten 1966)

TIM Magazine™ I can tell from studying him over the past two weeks that this little guy is going to go on and to tremendous work with me. He was born to do the work I have planned for him. I find it amazing that a puppy with such star qualities was roaming the countryside all on his own. He has now had a worming tablet, flea treatment, his first vaccination and two good baths. He is also the proud owner of his first tiny collar, which he was treated to yesterday. A couple of weeks ago, in the Spanish countryside, a piece of gold was found.
It fills me with enthusiasm and excitement when I think of how many dogs we will help and what we can achieve together.
This piece of gold, was covered in fur, had a wet nose and two big fluffy ears!
For the time being though, he is a little too interested in his chew toy, as he goes through his teething period. I am lucky in the fact that we still have around two months more of his socialisation period to go and in that time he will see as much of what the world has to offer, which will help him to grow up calm and balanced. He started with the Easter parade in Pinoso a week ago and with all the noise and excitement he just sat in his little carrier observing everything happily.
He was a seven week old male puppy, who we are guessing is a cross between a German shepherd and a Husky. He was covered in ticks and fleas, along with being dehydrated and starving hungry. He is now safe and with us. He is the most delightful little chap and loves everything that moves, including our cats. I am not aware of how many people saw him on his travels before he was picked up, but whoever did see him, I wonder if they were aware that they were crossing paths with an angel. All of my work now is saving animals and most of the time I get severely abused dogs, who I must rehabilitate, before I find them loving forever homes. Rehabilitation takes time, some longer than others and to carry out this work effectively I need a good team around me, which I am blessed with. They are my Wife and my dogs.
I find his mix fascinating though as, yes, I know he looks like a German shepherd crossed with a Husky, but somewhere underneath all of that soft fur, I still think he could have some Border collie sprinkled in for good measure. We have named him Patch and it seems like God did not bless him with a tail, or maybe something happened to him in his early few weeks of life, but what God did bless him with are the most spectacular, sparkling eyes I have ever seen, that always seem to be smiling at you. I also know that one Saturday evening a couple of weeks ago, God did definitely bless me with this amazing little bundle of energy who will go on to save many, many other dogs.
It is my belief that some dogs were put on this earth to do just that, rehabilitate their own kind.

“Are they legal?” That´s what I´m often asked. People say to me “Do you know so and so; they´re doing this and that; do you know if they are legal? Do they have the necessary licence to do it?” All I can say is ask them! Ask to see their licences. If they have an office or it’s a shop or a bar you should be able to see it displayed behind the bar, on a desk or on the wall. It will tell you what they are licensed to do.
I can tell you that as far as Boarding Kennels are concerned you need a certificate which is issued by the local Town hall but not granted by the Town hall. By this, I mean that to apply for a licence to open a Boarding Kennel you first go to your local Town hall with your plans for a kennels, drawn up by an Architect. If they accept your request it is put on the public notice board for 2 weeks, after which, if there are no objections, you then need to acquire all the different licences from the many different departments across the region. For example: Roads, Sanitary, Zoological, Noise, and Environmental, so on and so on. Once you have these licences which are gathered by the authorities in Alicante they then decide to grant you a licence and inform your Town hall, who, after you pay them for the privilege, will issue a certificate. This can take years to achieve, at a high cost! This is why I´m writing this article. Those people who decide to run a Boarding Kennels without the relevant licences not only take a massive risk of being closed down, given a massive fine, plus back payment of Atonimo and a further fine, they are also putting at risk people who place their pets with them. You may have seen in recent issues of the Costa Blanca News and the Euro Weekly where Boarding Kennels have been closed down.
16
When the Guardia close these illegal premises down, they do it with immediate effect, there and then! This means that those pets that are in those kennels must be collected as soon as possible. The owners must be contacted and their pets collected. Not very good if you´re on holiday! Also, those kennels will not have the necessary insurances to cover your pet from any form of accident. For instance, if your pet bit someone they are not covered (they being the kennels). You could find yourself going to court and receiving a heavy fine. This is just one scenario, there are others. So it´s important you check and ensure the kennels that are looking after your pet are legal, for your own peace of mind. Therefore, I will say to all the businesses out there, including shops, bars, market traders, kennels, that are NOT legal, re think because it´s only a matter of time before the authorities catch up with you.......Tick Tock....The Clock Is Ticking! If there are any persons wishing to contact me regarding the safety of their pets or have any questions about the above article please email me at: lezsonja@yahoo.co.uk or find me on Facebook.

Turn your favourite classic dishes into guilt-free comfort food Those of us who are dedicated to a healthy lifestyle might feel that some of our favourite comfort foods no longer have a place on our table. Well, that is not true. We just need to know how to turn calorie-laden dishes into healthy, tasty meals. In the following are some tips & tricks how to decrease calories and fat without sacrificing the homely taste and ‘comfort aspect’ that we love so much. Bacon: Replace with dried mushrooms. Soak them in just boiled water for 20 minutes, chop up and add to your dish. You reduce your calories by 50 % and still have that hearty flavour. The soaking water can be used as stock in risottos or soups. If you can’t do without bacon, don’t use additional butter or oil in your frying pan. The frying process releases enough fat from the bacon. Beef: Use skinless chicken breast instead of beef, which reduces the calories by half. Although both have animal fat, at least chicken breast has only half of the amount of saturated fat than beef. Your arteries will thank you. Butter: In baking use oil (nut oil is more neutral than olive oil) or yoghurt instead. For frying and for savoury dishes use olive oil. On a sandwich replace butter by mustard, tomato puree, or low-fat cream cheese. Cream, Crème Fraîche or Sour Cream: For soups or sauces replace by low-fat cream cheese. If the consistency of cream cheese is too thick for the dish you want to make, use low-fat unsweetened condensed milk. Indian curry dishes can be slimmed down by replacing the cream with Greek yoghurt. Coconut milk: Use only half the
amount of coconut milk and replace the other half by (homemade if you have) chicken or vegetable stock. Croutons: Always nice to add to soups or salads. When preparing croutons in the pan use a non-stick pan and no fat. Fry on a low heat. Even easier: Put the bread in the toaster and cut into little cubes afterwards. Mozzarella cheese can be replaced by grated parmesan. Hard cheese has more flavour and less calories than soft cheese. And it takes less grated hard cheese than soft mozzarella. Salad dressings: The dressing can turn a healthy salad into a calorie-laden meal. Instead of dressings based on mayonnaise you can use yogurt. Or simply make a vinaigrette. For a standard, lowfat dressing use: 2 tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp honey or jam, a pinch of pepper and salt, 1 tsp olive oil (this is for 1 portion). Béchamel Sauce: in lasagna, for example, can be replaced by ricotta cheese. Sugar: Sweetness can be achieved by adding grated carrots, dried fruit, or sweetcorn. Honey or agave syrup are great substitutes, too. In most recipes just reduce the amount of sugar by half. That is usually still sweet enough. A little vanilla extract or cinnamon intensify the sweet taste. You see, with a few little tricks we can enjoy our comfort food and still be kind to the waist line. Please also do not forget that by substituting high-calorie ingredients we also reduce or substitute the unhealthy fat content in our dishes. This not only leads to weight-loss (or a healthy weight maintenance), but lowers bad cholesterol, too. A little tip when cooking for your spouse or family: Don’t tell them about the substitutions. I bet, they will still eat the lot and you have the satisfaction of having done something good for the health of your loved ones without sacrificing the flavours everybody loves.

....and The Graduate (Part two of Mrs Robinson)
Into the huge hall we all went, me with the other graduates now separated from their guests, the latter upstairs in the Circle , we down below in front of the stage which was so large you could hold a dance on it. After a short impressive brass recital there were several rousing, motivational and congratulatory speeches, before one by one we were ushered up expertly to the edge of the stage. At a given signal by yet another OU angel, destiny called as my name was announced and I set off across the gigantic stage to meet and shake hands with the President. The great man somehow managed to act as though he was genuinely pleased, and said warmly ‘Congratulations, John’. I understood later my family made a huge noise as I walked over trying not to trip, but probably - and in retrospect fortunately - I couldn’t hear them. After the ceremony I was re-united with the mob, where we were all handed a congratulatory glass of champagne or orange. Just as I was getting used to wearing them off came the robes, and together with the family we headed happily for a nearby restaurant where we had booked a table. A lovely relaxed lunch took place over a couple of hours, this venue as efficient as the OU. A few impromptu speeches and mickey-taking were the order of the day: you never get a big head in a large family, and this occasion was no exception. A congratulations card was adorned with sentiments using the ‘BA’ letters theme: entertaining, but not always complimentary. like ‘Bulging Abdomen’ and ‘Battered Appearance’ Bloody Arrogance, I told ‘em… It was soon sadly time for us all to part, and with eternal and very sincere thanks Annie and I said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel in preparation for the next big event. Strangely enough, Anne then expressed the opinion that her ‘feet were killing her’ – funny that… As weekend artistic director I told her she would be now be officially sleeping with The Graduate…We briefly re-charged the batteries - well, that’s one way of putting it – in time for a change of clothes, back to the tube and on to Piccadilly Circus. Here we had booked two excellent tickets for ‘The Jersey Boys’, the Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons story. The atmosphere, excitement, and just mixing with all sorts of strange people at the theatre all added to the fun of seeing a great show. I know how to treat a lady, hamburger and a coke afterwards but in truth we were ‘knackered’ – and headed home. We had another full day in London to come and so a good night’s sleep was followed by another full English Breakfast, courtesy of Rembrandt, buffet-style. The word ‘full’ was taken literally by me, because knowing I had to fuel myself for a long day
I went round twice to my wife’s amazement – well, you have to get your money’s worth, don’t you? In the unbelievably sunny late March morning we strolled back to the now-familiar tube station, on this time to an old favourite place of ours from our courting days, Covent Garden, where the street acrobats and entertainers were hard at it. But just round the corner is the Lyric Theatre: I went into the Box Office and enquired as to whether there were any seats for that afternoon’s matinee performance. ‘Well, no, technically we haven’t. How many are you looking for?’ Came the strange response. The sparkly-eyed girl offered us two end row single seats two rows apart, which we jumped at. A stroll ensued, the weather was strangely gorgeous as we meandered down to the Embankment to admire the mighty Thames, the London Eye, H’s of P and Big Ben etc, before returning to Covent Garden for a light lunch. Just to let ‘The Lion King’ show wash over you is an incredible experience, one which will take us both a long time to forget. We were so spellbound by it we hardly noticed we weren’t sitting together. It was a fabulous show and we felt so lucky to get last-minute tickets. Stumbling out into the still-warm sunshine we spent the next three hours just strolling round the West End, delighting in the whole London experience. Near Green Park, we popped into a posh-looking café/restaurant exactly opposite the Ritz . An intended revitalising snack turned into a ‘We-ell, why not?’ full afternoon tea experience: cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jams, exotic cakes etc, after you with 30 odd pounds. Who cares for once, it was great! As an exserviceman I paid my silent homage and said thanks to the brave men of Bomber Command, the impressive statues of which were opened by the Queen for the Jubilee two years ago on Hyde Park corner. With a long night of travel ahead we returned tired-but-happy to Knightsbridge. It was necessary to finally leave Monsieur Rembrandt’s gaff at 2.30 am, a taxi whizzed us to Victoria and the three o’clock Gatwick Express got us to the airport in good time. Blearily, but very happily the return flight to Spain and airport car pick up went perfectly. We were back home by mid morning, tired, yes - but very happy. To receive my degree that way with my family, and enjoy a fabulous weekend with my wife was wonderful: just about everything went like clockwork, and we will drool over it for many years to come. Oh, and Mrs Robinson played her part to perfection: I’m a lucky boy… John McGregor B.A.

The Legal Page Written by Rob Innis with Pedro Heredia Ortiz (Abogado- Solicitor – Barrister) of Pellicer & Heredia Abogados New traffic laws for motorists, bikers, cyclists and pedestrians came into effect in May. Foreign residents must register their vehicles. Because foreigners living in Spain were not under the obligation to register their cars here, in practice it was difficult to get them to pay traffic fines or submit to controls. The new regulations will determine the deadlines and conditions for vehicle registration. Ban on taking unsafe vehicles to other countries. This article is an application of the United Nations’ Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, which aims to discourage the importing and exporting of new or used vehicles deemed unsafe. 50 % discount for early fine payment extended to 20 days. This is up from the current 15 days. Helmets compulsory in cities for cyclists under 16. Not doing so could lead to fines of 200 € for parents. Small children may not ride in the front seat. You can be stopped and fined if you are carrying children under 1.35 meters in the front passenger seat, unless other children also under the height limit already take up all the back seats (or the car has no back seats at all). Fines can reach 200€. Fines for drunk driving increased. Driving with double the allowed limit of alcohol in the blood will now mean a fine of 1,000€ up from 500€. Those caught driving under the influence twice within the same year will be fined 2,000€ for second offences. Fines for driving after taking drugs. The new law eliminates the need to prove that drug use influenced a person’s driving. Now, all it takes is a saliva test: if the result shows the presence of drugs in the body, drivers will be presented with a 1,000€ fine regardless of whether the substances affected their driving or not. Prescription drugs are excluded. Alcohol and drug tests for pedestrians. Pedestrians caught violating a traffic regulation – by crossing the road at the wrong place, for instance – will be obliged to submit to a drug and alcohol test. Until now, this was only the case if they were involved in an accident. New speed limits. While the current speed limit on motorways is 120km/h, the reforms contemplate raising this to 130km/h. The new code scheduled for approval in June will determine where and when this speed may be legally reached. Penalties
30
will be the same: starting at 100€ for vehicles going up to 150km/h. No minimum speed restrictions for bicycles. This reform aims to solve a problem faced by cyclists in cities. Until now, vehicles could not travel at a speed below 50 percent of the limit. Ban on speed camera detectors and jammers. The new legislation expressly prohibits the use of speed camera detectors: drivers caught using them will be liable to fines of 200€ and the loss of three points on their license. Speed camera jammers are considered much more serious and entail penalties of 6,000€ and 6 points off the licence. Only alert systems offering information about the locations of speed cameras based on databases will be legal. Drivers with GPS devices incorporating speed camera detection capabilities will have to deactivate this option. Road works. It will be considered a serious offense to conduct any kind of road works without first informing the relevant traffic authorities. Road debris. Dropping items of any kind on the road will carry high penalties because it is considered dangerous to other road users. Inspecting driving schools. Hindering health department or traffic inspectors trying to carry out checks on driving schools and other vehicle-related centers will be considered an offense. Police can fine vehicles without stopping them. Officers will be able to fine vehicles without hailing them down if they are performing duties that prevent them from doing so or giving chase. Drivers to be responsible in accidents involving game animals. Under the new law, drivers will always be considered to blame unless it can be proven that the animal stormed the road because of a biggame hunt held that day or within 12 hours of one having taken place. Environmental restrictions. Vehicles may be barred from entering certain roadways based on environmental criteria. New reasons for immobilizing vehicles. As well as the vehicles of drivers who let children ride without the proper safety devices, authorities will also be able to immobilize those being driven without the proper permit (a C permit in the case of vehicles weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg and a D permit in the case of buses). Priority for tow trucks On their way to assist motorists will have right of way and have to be treated the same way as ambulances. Fewer driving restrictions for cancer patients. Currently cancer sufferers are seldom allowed to drive, except with doctor’s permission. But improved medical treatment means fewer restrictions on patients. s m e l b o r P p i h s n Relatio
Living in a relationship is not always straightforward. What can you do in case of disagreement? What are the prospects?
The fact that most adults live in a committed relationship, shows that the long-term partnership is the prefered way of life in our society. Besides love and affection people are looking for security and familiarity in order to build a long term relationship and permanent family. Nevertheless, the number of marriages is falling and the divorce rate is rising. The probability that a marriage nowadays ends up in a divorce is over 50%. This value is clearly in contradiction to the satisfying partnership, which is indicated by over 90% of the people as a life goal. One reason is the bigger economic independence of the partners of each other. At grandma’s times, financial security was an important aspect of marriage, as today romantic claims are in the foreground. But the time of being in love expires unfortunately in many cases after a few years and the everyday life begins to eat away at the relationship. Not having the ability to address the needs of the partner then often leads to divorce or separation.
questioning of general expectations regarding family and career on the other hand are necessary. Here is professional counselling or coaching also very advisable. As a third possibility, where a disturbed relationship can lead to, of course, the separation must be mentioned. Especially the fear of change, responsibilities towards children and uncertainty about the future are in the foreground, indicating again the need of professional help.
Relationship Problems: Four Possibilities Disturbed relationships can be simplified in four development possibilities (according to Schwartz, 1998), explained by the following example: The busy business man husband brings in hardly any time for the family, while his wife feels alone and neglected. The first possibility for development of this relationship problem is the improvement of tolerance of the problematic behaviour without being hostile. So if the problem inducing partner cannot or does not want to change, the relationship does not necessarily have to fail, if the partner is able to raise frustration tolerance and focus on the benefits of the situation (eg. financial security, time). To achieve a improved tolerance without hostility against the partner, expert advice is highly recommended. A second possibility for development is the protest. Here, the problem trigger is demanded. In the aforementioned example, the husband has to change in order to dedicate more time for partnership and family. To work on this, concrete agreements on the one hand and the 32
Recognize normality
Anyway, the giving up of a relationship is not an easy decision, but is certainly better than the fourth opportunity of development, called holding out with hostile feelings. In the above-mentioned example, the wife would create hate and aversion against her husband, which often is shown more or less subliminally (eg. alcohol, affair, etc). This is the situation that should be avoided in any case, since in this case both sides are suffering, and is especially problematic if children are involved. Also, automatic improvement is not to be expected, more likely is an escalation so that the couple will have to face even greater problems in the future. Additionally, psychosomatic symptoms can be provoked, especially during long periods of suppression, so that the nonregulating of negative emotions and situations is not to be underestimated.
Living together in a partnership, especially in marriage and family, not always runs smoothly. Therefore, do not dramatize problems, rather detect them in time, and work them out, with or without professional help. This is often the only way to achieve a long-lasting and fulfilling partnership, which still is an essential component of personal life satisfaction. Winging it! A view from the pilot’s seat by Chris Pickles, Sol-aero flyers One of my ex students, Derek Holley, has bought a plane! The first thing you’ll notice about the Capella XSTD is that it’s a taildragger, ie the landing gear has a wheel at the back rather than the conventional tricycle gear with a nose-wheel. So what’s the difference? In the air nothing, but on the ground they are a different animal…..and they bite! The main gear is further forward on a dragger, putting the pilot(s) behind the centre of gravity making the whole thing hugely unstable. Squeeze right rudder on a tricycle gear and you turn right…..release and the turn stops. But with a dragger the tail becomes a huge pendulum and the turn keeps going until you apply opposite rudder to stop it….over or under-react and you are facing the opposite direction (ground-loop), very quickly! Not fun at 70mph on the takeoff roll!! Derek’s never flown a tail-dragger before, so asked me for some training because I have……once! So in a gesture of trust and complete idiocy, he’s lent it to me to learn how to handle it!! Jan (Wifey) described the Capella as ‘raw’. Good description! The tubular chassis, riveted wings, sailcloth fuselage, struts and wires make it look ‘hard’ rather than pretty. It’s bristling with testosterone…toe brakes, mechanical flaps in a stupid place, T-bar throttle…. a man’s plane, and boy it’s fun!
down the runway, feet pedaling frantically, aircraft tail wagging like a dog, trying to keep the pointy end in front, and to not bury the prop! At 70mph release forward pressure and up she goes!! Airborne I expected the Capella to behave like my Moragon… benign…dull even, but no. The short wingspan makes for responsive ailerons with almost aerobatic roll rate, and that stubby tail requires lots of rudder. It’s slower than my Moragon but feels quicker, I can’t remember the last aircraft I flew that made me grin! On approach you have to lower flap in stages, the overhead mechanism is too tough to do them in one go. Normally I’d moan bucketfuls about this, but in the Capella it seems apt! Macho, like ‘howling-mad Murdoch’ from the A-Team! Landing.....! You cannot land crossed up, instant ground-loop. Also, once the main gear is down the temptation is to drop the tail. Do this and you increase the angle of attack, allowing the plane to fly again briefly before stalling and dropping like a brick! Allow the tail to fly as long as possible for super-smooth landings! They say you’re not a pilot ‘til you can fly a tail-dragger….dead right! My rudder-work is so improved. Take-off and landings like an arrow! Would I buy one? DEFINITELY!! Derek comes tomorrow for a lesson….I hope he loves his new toy as much as I do! Meantime…. I’m off to grow a beard, drink some beer, eat a chicken vindaloo, and other man things…..See-ya! Until next time, Chocks away!
Takeoff in a tricycle gear is an easy maneuver, but this!! Full power, stick forward to bring the tail up, (takes some strength!), and off
‘Crazy hawk’ Pickles & ‘Howling mad’ Holley…….MEN!! For more information call 609 685 132 / 966195 508 (Chris/Jan) or see main advert.

May 22nd - June 21st
Aries Your phone will be ringing nonstop. Everyone wants to talk with you. Whether you’re giving advice or helping a colleague with a difficult project, you’ll be in demand. A desire for intellectual stimulation could take you to the library. Check out a challenging book that looks interesting. This is a great time to expand your intellectual horizons. Beware of spending too much time on social media. There’s plenty of work to be done. Every last minute is precious. People are counting on you.
Leo A positive attitude makes you a popular figure. Don’t be surprised if you get invited to several different parties. You’ll have fun rubbing elbows with people from all different walks of life. If you’ve been thinking of joining a club, do so. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet people who share your interests. The more varied your social circle, the happier you are. It’s possible you could develop romantic feelings for an old friend. Resist the urge to steer this relationship into romantic waters.
Sagittarius Working with a partner will be rewarding. You like to concentrate on the big picture. Getting caught up in little details is annoying and interrupts your flow. Teaming up with someone who enjoys attending to day to day jobs can be helpful. Are you in love? You might be thinking about getting engaged or married. Although the thought of settling down makes you nervous, it can actually enhance your life. The trick is to find a partner who gives you plenty of intellectual stimulation.
46
Taurus A desire for financial security will prompt you to look for moneymaking opportunities. You’re extremely good with your hands. Making food, jewellery or furniture can be lucrative for you. Alternatively, you may decide it’s time to find a more profitable job. Working with people in the area of media or research can be rewarding intellectually and financially. Be ready to change pace. The more versatile you are, the easier it will be to earn a good living. Improving your computer skills is a good idea.
Virgo
Gemini
Cancer
You can gain fame and acclaim for your talent. Stop being so modest and showcase your abilities. If you’re looking for work, it’s important to promote your accomplishments during interviews. That’s the only way you can land a job in this competitive market. Have you been considering opening your own business? Such a venture could be successful, especially if you have an extensive list of personal contacts. Who you are is just as important as what you know.
Exploring the mystical side of life will be fulfilling. You’re tired of focusing on family and career. Being able to slip away and contemplate bigger issues will be liberating. You might take up a spiritual practice or attend a house of worship. Studying different philosophies and religions can be enlightening, too. You don’t have to commit to any one group or alter your beliefs. The simple process of comparing and contrasting different ideas may be stimulating enough.
Libra
Scorpio
Take charge of a project that is spinning out of control. You might be the only person who is able to make sense of a big mess. Put your organisational skills to work. If you establish yourself as a capable leader, you will be given a promotion and raise. Are you looking for a job? Try any work involving public relations. You’re very good at handling questions and helping customers. When you don’t know the answer to a question, you make it your mission to find it.
Learning about different cultures gives you a new lease on life. If you were raised with beliefs that no longer resonate with your lifestyle, let them go. Develop your own philosophy. This doesn’t mean you’re rejecting your upbringing. It simply means you’re ready to exercise authority over your own life. When people feel threatened by your ideas, stay calm. You don’t have to defend your values to anyone. The sooner people see they can’t control your thinking, the faster they will stop.
Capricorn
Aquarius
You’re a regular worker bee. Diving into a big pile of work will be engrossing. It is fun crossing items off your list of chores. Some colleagues may try to give you some of their responsibilities, so be ready to refuse. You are only getting paid one salary, even if you’re producing the work of three people. Your health is starting to improve, thanks to some sensible measures you’ve taken. Getting enough sleep and taking regular exercise has a tremendous impact on your wellbeing.
People naturally gravitate to your fun loving personality. Everybody knows things will get interesting when you arrive on the scene. A stern authority figure may not be amused by your antics. Try flying beneath their radar. You don’t want to make enemies. Someone with your potential can quickly climb the ladder of success, so long as you don’t anger the powers that be. Exercising your creative side will attract admirers. You’re irresistible when showing off your artistic ability.
E-mail: editor@timspain.com • Web site: www.timspain.com
Your personal magnetism is incredibly strong. It should be no trouble finding admirers. If you need a favour, ask for it. People have a hard time resisting your charm. Are you already in a relationship? Make plans with your amour. Start a holiday fund, open a savings account and set some financial goals. When you’re rowing in the same direction, you can build a great life together. Do the two of you have different attitudes towards money? Strike a compromise so neither of you feels judged.
Pisces Getting in touch with your feelings should be your first priority. Recently, you’ve been operating on autopilot. The desire to finish chores as quickly as possible stopped you from dwelling on your emotions. Now your schedule is slowing down, you’ll be able to address matters of the heart. If you’ve developed a crush on someone, think whether this relationship is worth pursuing. Turn your attention elsewhere if the object of your affection is in a committed relationship.

You should avoid the visual fatigue!
You have lots of thing to see! Every time we spend more time in front of screens: working, studying or enjoying our free time, but we are always in front of a screen. This “digital excess” can cause “visual fatigue” It’s very common, 60% of the population suffer “visual fatigue” Your long distance vision usually is tired than your short distance vision. The reason is very simple: There is a small muscle in interior him of your eye (ciliar muscle). Because of the contraction of this muscle the crystalline changes its form, for this reason it is more round and it has more ability of refraction. Are you eyes tired? If at the end of the day you have a big effort doing activities like reading, watching TV or suffering by the Internet, maybe you suffer “visual fatigue”. Its symptoms are: Eye discomfort: stress, pressure, itching, heaviness in eyes, burning, need to rub the eyes, drowsiness, eye itching, increased flicker... Visual disturbances: problems to hear the sound form the screen, blurred vision when looking from afar, diplopia (double vision) Extra ocular symptoms: headache, dizziness and feelings of restlessness and anxiety, along with discomfort in the neck and spine THERE IS A SOLUTION… At first, you should visit your optician, of course. She/He will make you a revision in order to know the symptoms and the problem. What do you at work? 1. You should take some breaks every 5 minutes if you have been working for an hour. 2. Working consistently at the same distance and doing the same activities causes muscle disorders associated with the Visual Fatigue Syndrome. In order to rest your eyes, you should alternate your 48
vision between a near object and a far (looking out the window, for example) 3. Remember it is important to flash. Due to concentration, we usually do a lot less than normal. It is normal to flash 20 times for a minute, and just 5 times when we stare.
of the population ‘‘ 60% suffer visual fatigue
‘‘
How many hours do you spend in front of your computer, television or looking at your Smartphone? The life is becoming more technologically and, of course, our habits are doing the same, too.
4. Even if you feel your eyes are dry, you also can use an eyewash (ask advice to the optician).
5. You should adjust the brightness and contrast of the screen so that it is consistent with the illumination of the work area. You can try to reduce the ambient light because it will help us to improve the text display. 6. You should make sure that you have the suitable light, it is better if the light is natural. But you should remember the excess of light might be injurious. It is not good to put the display in front or back to a window or direct light source. A better option is a side lighting and to avoid glare. It is important position of the screen relative to the light sources. 7. If you can, you should increase the refresh rate of the screen. 7075 HZ is a good in order to reduce the visual fatigue. DON’T FORGET... The optician is the best person who can give you all the recommendations and suggestions. You should use cold and hot masks. It’s good to massage the head (temples) with circular movements. Try to prevent dehydration of the ocular surface. by Maria Carbonell Domenech, Optician and Optometrist

NATURAL WAYS TO AVOID
MOSQUITOES THIS SUMMER
1
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus: Oil of lemon eucalyptus is said to be one of the most effective natural mosquito repellents on the market. The active ingredient in oil of lemon eucalyptus is cineole, which has several antiseptic and insect repellent properties.
2
Wear Light-Coloured and Tightly–Woven Clothing: In the heat of the summer, wearing light-coloured clothing not only keeps you cooler, but it also repels mosquitoes. These bloodsucking insects are attracted to dark-colours and they can easily find you if you don’t dress accordingly. In addition to dressing lightly, be sure to pay atten-tion to how much of your skin is exposed. If you are going to be out-doors for a long period of time, you’ll want to wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and shoes and socks that cover your skin. Another tip for blocking mosquitoes is to wear clothes made of tightly– woven materials
3
4
5 54
Oil of Citronella: The citronella oil that’s found in outdoor candles, torches and lanterns, and skin products provides a natural and fra-grant way to keep mosquito’s away. Citronella oil is an essential oil that comes from citronella grass, which can be planted for extra mosquito-repelling power. According health organisations, oil of cit-ronella poses little or no toxicity risks to humans, wildlife and envi-ronment. However, there is a slight chance that citronella products can cause skin irritations in children and people with sensitive skin, especially if applied incorrectly. Soybean Oil: Soybean oil is a vegetable oil that has been extracted from the seeds of a soybean. Although soybean oil is predominately used in cooking, it does have awesome mosquito-repelling powers. Soybean-oil-based repellents protect against mosquito bites for an average of an hour and a half-two hours, which is more than all other botanical repellents used. Go Fragrance–free: Since mosquitoes are attracted to fragrances, it’s a very good idea to avoid wearing perfumes and
scented products while you are outside. There’s nothing more natural than going fragrance-free and sporting your natural scent. Of course that doesn’t mean you can’t wear sunscreen, deodorant or use hair products - just make sure they are all fragrance-free. Also, be sure to watch your use of scented fabric softeners, which can remain on your clothes well after washing them.
6
Lavender Oil: Not only does lavender oil smell simply wonderful, but this essential oil also provides effective mosquito-repelling power... Lavender oil can be mixed with other essential oils to boost its bene-fits or applied alone. After using this potential natural oil, you’ll never want to go back to the chemical stuff again.
7
Garlic: Garlic works on mosquitoes too! The pungent smell of garlic is the key to keeping mosquitoes away from you. It is believed that garlic is released through the pores and may change your scent, making it harder for mosquitoes to find you and less likely to stay on your skin if they do track you down. Test the mosquito-repelling power of mos-quitoes by eating it regularly. And indeed Garlic is also supposed to be good for you.
8
Reduce Standing Water In and around your home: The best way to avoid mosquitoes is not to attract them in the first place. This can be done by simply reducing the amount of standing water that they can use for breeding in. Be sure to repair failed or damaged septic systems, leaky water pipes and outdoor faucets, in addition, keep drains, ditches and culverts free of debris so water can drain properly. Swim-ming pools should be cleaned and chlorinated regularly.
9
Plant Mosquito-repelling Plants: An easy way to repel mosquitoes and spruce up your garden is to plant bug-repelling plants. Tansies, Marigolds, Catnip, Thai Lemon Grass, Citronella Grass and Garlic are excellent, natural mosquito repellents. These plants give off an odour that’s unpleasant to mosquitoes and will send them flying far away.

Madrid won the toss and decided to bat. After losing a wicket in the 3rd over, they progressed slowly and reached 61 before the next wicket went down. K Seshut and I Blake were progressing slowly until Seshut was caught for 25 and then Blake went to a brilliant caught and bowled by Mike Wareing for 35.
