UK’S FIRST HARDWOOD CLT Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) has manufactured the UK’s first ever cross-laminated timber (CLT) from hardwood and the new material was used to construct the London Design Festival’s flagship pavilion in the Sackler courtyard of the V&A. The 9-metre high structure, named MultiPly, will be in place until 1 October. A collaboration between Waugh Thistleton Architects, the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and Arup it aims to show how modular systems made from sustainable materials can help address the problems of climate change and the shortage of housing. RESTRICTIONS TO PROTECT NATIVE TREES FROM PESTS
Bringing you FSC® 100%

from Guyana
Restrictions have been introduced on the import of most species of oak into England as part of new regulations to protect native trees from the threat of Oak Processionary Moth (OPM). The movement of certain oak trees into the UK’s OPM Protected Zone (an area of the EU declared free of the pest) is banned unless specific conditions are met. This covers both imports from overseas and movement

of trees from areas of the country where OPM is already present – in London and surrounding counties. The measures cover all oaks (Quercus) – with the exception of cork oak (Quercus suber) – which have a girth of 8cm or more at 1.2 metres above the root collar and are imported or are moving into the Protected Zone from other parts of England. The regulations apply to all businesses which import and move oak trees. Defra chief plant health officer Nicola Spence said: “Protecting our country from tree pests and diseases is vital to safeguard our environment, economy and our health. “That is why we are introducing tighter restrictions on the importation of oak trees to England, and the movement of oak trees out of certain parts of South East England which are infested with OPM. “Through investment, research and legislation we will continue to help protect our precious oak trees for years to come.” OPM caterpillars feed on oak leaves and can increase trees’ vulnerability to attack by other pests and diseases, making them less able to withstand adverse weather conditions, such as drought and floods. The Forestry Commission, councils and land managers tackle the pest which affects Greater London and several surrounding counties with an annual control programme of tree treatment. The new restrictions follow the launch of the Government’s first Tree Health Resilience Strategy which pledged tough action to protect the nation’s trees from pests, diseases and climate change. A key element is the Action Oak campaign which seeks to protect the UK’s 121 million oak trees for future generations.

COMPANY PROFILE: TAYLOR LANE TIMBER FRAME Taylor Lane Timber Frame was started In November 1982 by Colin Taylor and Barrie Lane who both had a decade of timber frame experience. They began building frames in a small factory unit in Hereford and in 1987 constructed their first purpose-built factory and offices in the city. In the 1990s the company extended its offering, opening up to the commercial sector, providing kits for developers, contractors and local authorities. In the early 2000s Taylor Lane Timber Frame purchased two further sites, Thorn and Gatehouse, also on the Rotherwas Industrial Estate, Hereford, and the two factories remain key in its production process. It manufactures around 2,500 units a year and employs 150 people.

we achieved the project completion date. Taylor Lane’s ethos and attitude matched our own in this regard,” said Ryan Harris, project director, Hill. “Over the years we have come to appreciate Taylor Lane for their professional service and quality product. The timber frame designs are fundamental to the commencement of site operations. We needed to know the line loads of the timber frame to design the foundations to secure firm costs and make an active start in the ground. Engaging the timber frame supplier early in the preconstruction stage was vital to allow an aggressive start.” Kits for all of the three and four-bedroom houses were manufactured, delivered to site and erected in 13 months, with a delivery target of 10 units per week over a phased programme. The timber frame kits comprised of ground and first floor panels, floor cassettes and roof components. Using its Thermaline system, with 120mm PIR insulation board and foil faced reflective breather membrane, the Taylor Lane kits achieve a U-value of 0.19 W/m2K. Hill was involved in the design process, working with Taylor Lane’s in-house design team on the units. It specified a non-working supervisor, onsite for the delivery and erection of the timber frame kits and Taylor Lane assigned Liam Hale, one of its on-site contracts managers to undertake the role.

won’t keep burning unless replenished with kindling and while the log will quickly develop a layer of charcoal, the fire will die out by itself. “The fire safety measures that have been implemented in Mjøstårnet make the timber building far safer than a corresponding building with a traditional steel and concrete structure. Mjøstårnet is one of the safest buildings along lake Mjøsa, and can withstand even an extensive fire,” said Even Andersen, fire consultant with Sweco Norge AS, the company responsible for fire safety in the building. In addition to Mjøstårnet being designed to withstand a burnout fire, a number of additional measures have been implemented. For example, the façade is protected against fire spreading, the building has an upscaled sprinkler system, and each individual room on each floor is designed as an individual fire cell to prevent fire from easily spreading to the next room

Miller Pattison to Stock Steico Blown Insulations Steico Zell, a woodfibre insulation and Steico Floc, a cellulose insulation are now available from Miller Pattison across the UK. Both insulations are primarily for use in ‘closed’ panel timber frame wall and roof systems ideal in the commercial, house builder, self-build sectors as well as larger construction projects such as schools where a timberframe system has been specified. Craig Leggett of Miller Pattison said “The addition of the Steico blown insulation gives us two fantastic products to offer to our Timber Frame customers. Both Steico Floc and Steico Zell have great thermal performance as well as being vapour open, which allows the building to breathe improving internal air
quality and also have a high thermal mass, meaning they protect the building from overheating as they store heat during the hottest part of the day and don’t allow it to pass into the structure providing a much more stable and pleasant internal temperature. An additional bonus is that both insulants have the highest environmental credentials – Steico Floc is made from recycled newspapers and magazines whilst Steico Zell is made from FSC certified woodfibres.” Bill Miller of Steico said “We are delighted to be partnering with Miller Pattison, an acknowledged expert in blown insulations with a nationwide network of depots able to offer Steico natural insulations to
customers across the UK either on or off site.” Miller Pattison provides a dedicated national service from their centrally located Head Office in Sheffield, to sites right across the UK. Ten strategically placed depots, throughout the country, allow Miller Pattison to provide continuity of a local service to all their clients, wherever they may be located. Miller Pattison are constantly ahead of their competitors due to the knowledge and experience the company has been able to sustain over nearly 50 years Steico UK manufacture environmentally friendly blown insulation and insulating wood fibreboards for both the newbuild and RMI markets.

HEALTHIER FAMILIES LIVE IN HEALTHIER HOMES “Back to purity, back to simplicity”
The development of building materials has advanced rapidly since the 1970s and today everything seems technically feasible. However, there is also a steadily increasing number of health problems, whose causes can be traced back to people’s immediate living environment. Residential poisons which radiate from building materials and furniture can release harmful substances for many years. They are considered a possible cause for allergies and other illnesses. The effects caused by the interaction of vapour-releasing plastics, sheeting of all kinds, solvents, adhesives and other construction chemicals on our health continue to present doctors with new challenges. Holz100 not only surrounds you with a completely non-toxic building material, it can also strengthen your immune system, revitalize your nervous system and help you live a longer life. Rooms made of wood have such a calming effect on us that we save our heart an hour’s work every night we spend in them.

PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER REMAINS MAINSTREAM FOR DECKING TDCA pays homage to pressure treated timber which remains the nation’s top choice for decking
T
he timber decking market has evolved considerably in recent years to give specifiers and end users alike a much wider choice of materials. Despite this, pressure treated timber has held onto its top spot as the UK’s favourite material for deck building, particularly for the support structure. It has served the market since
decking popularity soared in the UK in the early noughties. Its natural appearance is a primary reason for its ongoing success coupled with cost, it being competitively priced compared to the newer arrivals. For installers of pressure treated timber, it is also incredibly easy to work with, not to mention its versatility which allows much creative freedom. Put renewable, sustainable and environmentally responsible into the mix and its position is easy to understand. Pressure treated timber is commonly made from widely available plantation grown softwood which is impregnated with a wood preservative in an industrial treatment plant to make it more durable and allowing its effective use in situations that wouldn’t ordinarily be possible. For decking, the industry generally works to a 15-year desired service life, but extended services lives are available from some suppliers. Indeed, the TDCA publishes a code of practice for raised decking that represents a

THE SUPPLY CHAIN SESSIONS
Hosted at the Confederation of Timber Industries Pavilion Timber Trader UK is delighted to be hosting a series of presentations and discussions at this year’s Timber Expo in Birmingham aimed at addressing a range of different supply chain topics and opportunities for sawmills, importers and merchants. Two sessions will take place each morning from Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th October: short and sharp presentations followed by incisive questions from chair, Peter Wilson, managing director of Timber Design Initiatives Ltd, that are designed to elicit further useful information and guidance from each of the experts we have invited to speak. The topics for discussion range from product development and marketing to the challenges of the circular economy and the need for ongoing innovation in the creation of new and advanced timber systems. How Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools can deliver higher added value for the forestry sector deserves – and commands – a session all of its own, but each one of the talks focuses on the delivery of positives for the industry whilst eschewing any overt sales promotion.

CaberShieldPlus, flooring that keeps you building for up to 60 days, even with the roof off. CaberShieldPlus is the ideal flooring solution when building in Britain’s unpredictable climate. Based on Norbord’s popular moisture-resistant CaberFloor P5 tongue-andgroove particleboard flooring panel, CaberShieldPlus is specially designed to withstand exposure to wet conditions. Yet, unlike Norbord’s other protected flooring product CaberDek, which features a peelable film on the top surface, CaberShieldPlus has protection on both sides, not just the exposed upper surface. The top surface features a permanent non-slip coating that not only prevents damage to the board but also ensures a safe working platform. The underside is protected with the smooth coating that not only protects against damage but also makes the board easy to slide into position. For added durability, the coating applied to CaberShieldPlus is not designed to be peeled off after completion but is bonded permanently on both sides of the panel and waterproof.
• Construction and woodworking options providing financial savings • Kits come with three 18V batteries and twin port fast charger in a carry holdall
Makita, the UK’s number one professional power tool manufacturer, has introduced two new 18V LXT 5-piece brushless kits which represent a substantial saving by comparison with individual purchases. The new DLX5042PT kit contains a combi drill, impact driver, angle grinder, rotary hammer and a handy LED flashlight and is packaged as the 5-piece construction kit. The second kit is the DLX5043PT more suited to woodworking applications. This kit features the combi drill, impact driver and flashlight contained in the DLX5042PT kit together with a circular saw and jigsaw. Both new Makita kits provide a financial saving over buying the products individually and are supplied complete with three 18V 5.0Ah Lithium-ion batteries and a twin-port fast charger.

TENMAT offer the first range of fire protection products to be successfully tested on Metal Web Joist ceiling constructions
RCM exhibiting at major industry event for second time running
Wood protection, joinery repair systems, timber coatings – all this and much more can be seen at this year’s P&D Show. Application techniques, special show-only deals and innovative products.
Metal web joists and light weight engineered joists are becoming increasing popular in the construction industry, particularly for home builds. Whilst this type of joist does offer many great benefits over traditional solid timber joists, they do perform very differently in a fire scenario. In wood-based floors, failure will occur some time after the fire has entered the floor cavity and started charring the joists. In relation to solid timber joists, metal-web joists have less sacrificial material resulting in a reduced time to failure from when the fire entered the floor cavity. However with correctly tested fire protection products, metal-web joist floors can perform equally or better than solid timber joisted floors’. BJ Waller to exhibit at The Build Show BJ Waller will launch the new BUVA IsoStone threshold on the PIGS Product Pavilion, part of The Build Show 2018 at UK Construction Week. Architectural Ironmonger BJ Waller will be exhibiting the exclusive weatherproof and easy to fit door threshold at the new Doors, Windows & Glass Show. Luke Piper, Managing Director at BJ Waller says: “Showcasing our new product, the BUVA IsoStone door threshold on the PIGS Product Pavilion means that we can launch it to the industry as the exclusive UK supplier. The impressive door threshold is the perfect choice for manufacturing highly insulated, air and water tight doors, that also saves time and cost as no onsite adjustment is needed. “We know how popular UKCW is for the construction industry so it’s great to be exhibiting within The Build Show in front of such a wide audience.”
Visitors to The Build Show at UK Construction Week can find BJ Waller and find out more about the technology behind the BUVA IsoStone door threshold on Stand B515 in Hall 10 at The NEC between Tuesday 9 October and Thursday 11 October 2018.
After last years’ triumph, RCM are delighted to announce their plans to exhibit at this years’ Timber Expo again. The Timber Expo forms part of the Construction Week UK exhibition, held at the NEC, Birmingham on 9th -11th October 2018. Following on from last year’s huge success RCM, a major supplier of complete throughwall solutions, are looking forward to a repeat performance at this years’ Timber Expo in October. Last year RCM underwent a major rebranding exercise and introduced a newly designed exhibition stand as well as launching a brand new website in time for the event. This year, the 24 sqm eye-catching exhibition stand will once again feature RCM’s complete facades and building boards range. There will also be samples for interested visitors to take away. Back by popular choice, the visually exciting display of Supertech Weatherboard will showcase again, featuring a full range of colours thereby giving visitors a good impression of the choices on offer. Further RCM will also be demonstrating 8 revolving modules of through-wall solutions and 2 special fire-rated through-wall solutions, all comprising a selection of portfolio materials. These modules can also be rotated, allowing visitors to look at the construction from several angles They will provide a good understanding of how the different elements integrate to make up a truly effective through-wall solution. “RCM are once again looking forward to taking part in this prestigious event. Last year’s exhibition was a huge success for RCM and we have again been very busy with preparations for this years’ show. We hope to be able to replicate our success and hope visitors will like what we, as a company, can deliver. Please visit us at our stand located at T230.” (Ian Quinton, Managing Director RCM) It is promised to be a great event of major importance and RCM are excited to welcome you to their stand: T230.
