Warning over fire doors failures One of the UK’s leading fire door inspection organisations has warned of a “tragedy waiting to happen” after it revealed three quarters of the fire doors inspected in the UK by its approved inspectors did not meet the required standard. The Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS)’s data, based on more than 100,000 fire door inspections carried out by its approved inspectors in 2021, found that 75% of fire doors failed to meet the required standards, putting lives at risk in the event of a fire. Alarmingly, buildings that had the highest number of fire door inspection failures included healthcare buildings, local authorities and housing associations, and private housing. Given that these buildings’ fire doors are subject to higher use and traffic than other building types, regular inspection and maintenance is key to ensuring they remain fit for purpose throughout their lifespan. Louise Halton, FDIS scheme manager, said: “With the vast majority of fire doors in the UK failing inspections, it’s sad to say that a tragedy is simply waiting to happen, especially so in buildings that are home to vulnerable residents. But this situation is entirely preventable and, at this stage, still reversible. A fit for purpose fire door can save lives, so now is the time for all of those responsible for fire safety to urgently inspect fire doors in their buildings and act immediately if faults are identified. “It’s crucial that reputable and trained fire door inspectors, such as those approved by the FDIS, carry out fire door inspections. However, the ongoing reporting of maintenance issues with fire doors is a role for us all – every building user should play a proactive role in reporting any faults to ensure they are quickly addressed so that the building’s safety is maintained.” The most common reasons for inspection failure - which can be a result of one or multiple issues – were excessive gaps between the door and the frame (77%), care and maintenance issues (54%), and issues over smoke sealing (37%). In almost a third (31%) of cases, inspections failed due to improper installation – meaning those doors were never fit to perform the task of holding back fire and smoke. The inspection data also revealed inspectors’ top three fire safety concerns as a lack of fire door maintenance, and poor knowledge of fire safety responsibilities and a limited understanding of the role fire doors play in keeping people safe by those responsible for building fire safety. Louise Halton adds: “The issues surrounding the understanding and knowledge of those responsible for fire safety was also highlighted in the FDIS’ inspection data released in 2020 as a key concern. This clearly demonstrates the need for individuals throughout the building safety sector to have access to quality training, assessment, and examination to ensure their knowledge is up to date, and that they

SIG Roofing provide training tools for SkillBuild SIG Roofing is proud to be contributing products to the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) for the annual CITB SkillBuild competition. Providing all the necessary accessories for the competitors to achieve their best finish, SIG Roofing has supplied key products including nails, 5U Eaves underlay and hip iron to the competition. SkillBuild 2022 challenges apprentices from colleges across the country to showcase their knowledge and abilities in competitive heats. Including all trades from roofers to carpenters, the apprentices must demonstrate they’ve got the skills to beat their fellow rivals. For the roofing apprentices, the six-hour competition requires they install 5U felt, underlay and battens to receive plain tiles and bedded ridges according to instructions set. Judges monitor to ensure they are installing correctly during and at the end, evaluate competitors’ accuracy and ability to follow instructions. Simon Dixon, training manager at NFRC said “SIG Roofing has kindly supplied all of the fixings required for the SkillBuild regional heats. The competitors each have new packs of felt studs, batten nails, alloy nails and new hip irons. SIG Roofing has also supplied the 5U eaves felt for the competition. Any surplus nails and materials not used during the heats are left with the colleges and training centres for them to use in the regular everyday training, so the support continues long after the

Investment increases capacity at NTS National Timber Systems (NTS), the specialist engineered wood products division of National Timber Group, is increasing its offsite manufacturing capacity this year through a £1.5 million investment by the group. NTS products include gable and party spandrels, trussed rafters, engineered joists, floor and roof cassettes, and an innovative ‘rapid fit’ room in the roof panelised roof system. Richard Jarvis, NTS operations director said: “The investment from National Timber Group is allowing us to add more truss presses, truss and joist file driven saws and lasers. This is improving our capacity to supply high quality products and reducing lead times for our customers across the country. The first quarter of 2022 was a record in terms of turnover, and our order book is at the highest level it has ever been. Our turnover target for 2022 is £48 million.” NTS was formed in 2019 combining the design, manufacturing, and logistic capabilities of wellestablished companies Arnold Laver and NYTimber, both part of National Timber Group. continues to be hit by the rising cost of raw materials it has never been a more important time to ensure that you are looking after the valuable stock in your warehouse. Panel Products typically measure anywhere between 2400mm to 2800mm in length and from 900mm to 2070mm in depth. If you are bulk stacking this type of product, it can not only be difficult to access but also be prone to damage when it is constantly being moved around in your warehouse. It is pretty obvious that by using up too much of your valuable floor space, along with having to right-off the costs of damage to stock that this will ultimately have serious effects on your overall profit levels. Stakapal offer a range of Cantilever Racking solutions that not only offer you 100% selectivity but fully maximise the available area.

Innovation Project (AIMCH), panelised timber methods can improve new homes and reduce health and safety hazard exposure on construction sites by 20%.. The study concludes all methods are safe, but have differing health and safety risk profiles, with crane erect panelised methods, providing 20% less exposure to health and safety risks on site. The £6.5 million collaborative R&D AIMCH project seeks to industrialise how homes are constructed by mainstreaming the use of panelised MMC methods. Previously AIMCH research has demonstrated how utilising panelised MMC systems would result in new homes being built faster, cost effectively, to a high quality and with a lower carbon footprint. This latest study strengthens the case for panelised MMC by concluding that housing sites

Do you have the right business management software in your tool kit? K8 from Kerridge Commercial Systems (KCS) is innovative business management software that provides you with the tools to improve business performance. Its rich functionality gives you total control of your business, making managing your sales, stock, and accounts easy and convenient. K8 can be enhanced with modules for e-commerce – allowing you to trade online 24/7, business intelligence and a suite of mobile apps that allow you to take the technology to the job, bringing considerable efficiency savings across your business. As Darren House, Managing Director at Grant & Stone, explains “KCS are always driving us forward with the latest versions of K8, we’re already on the path towards a digital future by using all of the main features that KCS has to offer - and we’re in the process of launching any that we don’t already have”.
Using K8’s suite of mobile apps, a picker can scan the items from its bin and then place the items onto the pallet for delivery. The pick is automatically confirmed with no further intervention or paper, and accurate picking. The manifest for a driver can be electronically uploaded to a smart device and checked. On delivery the driver can then use the ‘sign on glass’ feature and take a photo as evidence as relevant. All these details will be immediately electronically uploaded to K8 upon completion of the delivery capturing full proof of delivery. “K8 ePOD has streamlined our processes significantly,” Paul Cornford, IS Service Manager of Howarth Timber, explains. “We no longer need to produce paper documents for our drivers or sort and file delivery notes on their return. All delivery information is on one screen. It’s a real time-saver.” All the
transactions have 2 major benefits: 1) they are minimising the amount of resources consumed – paper, ink, energy 2) the transaction is immediately up to date in K8 when the sub-task has been actioned, no additional effort required, no costly filing and storage. Hence efficiency, hence greater profitability. KCS’s robust cloud – hosted solution, K-Cloud, provides data security, resilience, business continuity and includes everything from servers to storage, system analytics and more. The solution reduces costs and waste and helps you scale as the needs of your business change. KCS work hard to ensure every one of its customers get the most of their K8 system.
