TIMBER EXPO 2014 < WELCOME / CONTENTS

Welcome It has been a busy summer behind the scenes at Timber Expo as we get ready to put on our biggest show yet. There has been a flurry of exhibitor activity recently, with a Polish trade delegation signing up as a Bronze Sponsor as we went to print. Visitor pre-registration is also at our highest ever level. With only a few weeks to the fourth Timber Expo, the Timber Focus seminar programme is now 99% confirmed and in place. From p10 onwards you will be able to see the TRADA-organised sessions that are spread over both days of the show. There are nearly 50 half-hour sessions arranged into eight core themes and as we constantly remind people – these are all top quality and all free. New for 2014 and sure to be a popular session is Training and Talent: growing your business through people. This will concentrate on issues surrounding closing the timber skills gap. A perennial problem for the construction sector generally but one where the timber sector seems to be making some progress. We have a range of speakers to choose from across the sessions including experts from Arup, Buro Happold, National Measurement Office, ProSkills UK, Skanska,
Willmott Dixon and the Zero Carbon Hub. All supported by ‘real life’ case studies of timber in action. There is plenty for visitors to take in over the two days with nearly 200 exhibitors including an increasing amount from overseas – not only does this reflect the global appeal of timber but highlights the global reach that Timber Expo now extends. This year we are co-located with W14 – the joinery and furniture manufacturing show – that will be next door to us in Halls 6, 7 and 8, so there has never been a better chance to absorb virtually every aspect of the timber industry in the same place at the same time. Our usual round up of recent news includes a Velocity update, a possible TTF/BWF merger and a full rundown of our 2014 sponsors and exhibitors. Enjoy the read…

Make Sure You Spot Fingers Crossed
Now in our fourth year, Timber Expo is ready to welcome a record amount of visitors in 2014. Over 5,000 visitors are expected at the UK’s leading timber trade show including architects and designers, engineers and contractors, local authorities and a wide range of those working in the built environment. Co-located with leading joinery show W14, Birmingham NEC will be the only place to be to see the latest products, innovations and developments across the timber sector – not just from the UK but from an increasingly exciting and diverse international market.
A huge range of almost 200 companies from all four corners of the timber industry will be unveiling their latest products and services.
Built from 9 mm birch plywood and supplied by TRADA member Hanson Plywood – it will be a landmark feature. Fingers Crossed is best described as a series of interlocking teeth – like giant timber combs – and is designed to exploit and celebrate the material behaviour of wood, relying solely on friction, rather than metal connections, as a joining solution.
With energy efficiency high on the construction agenda everywhere – Timber Expo will showcase the very best in timber, sustainability and innovation.
Overseas representatives include organisations from: Austria, a landmark Belgium Pavilion, Canada, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Latvia, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA. ‘Knowledge is power’ an old but relevant adage – advance your understanding from the widest display of new and innovative applications for timber within the built environment. See p18 for a full rundown of our overseas exhibitors.
Two bespoke Timber Focus seminar theatres will be built. One in timber frame by members of the Structural Timber Association and the other in cross laminated timber by the X-LAM Alliance. The VIP Lounge and Media Centre are being built by EcoCurves once again and will feature magnificent bespoke glulam arches – better known as the Tornado!

Slipstream Sculpture At the centre of the exhibition hall will be a scale model with 30,000 jigsaw pieces that will be an exact replica of what is going to be the largest timber sculpture in the world. The complex architectural challenges of turning a simple idea – solidifying the motion of a joyfully cartwheeling aircraft in a vast kit-of-parts jigsaw of pieces – will be explained in full by Ralph Parker, Architect at Price & Myers in the Timber Focus presentation Heathrow T2: the world’s largest timber sculpture at 11.30 on Tues 07 October.
Timber Expo sponsored the TTJ Innovation Award again this year and the winners of the Innovative Market Development category and Innovative Product Development category will be presenting on their success story in the Timber Focus programme 08 October.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS
Solid Wood Timber Focus Seminar Theatre is sponsored and provided by the X-LAM Alliance and shows the scope of working with glulam and engineered timber.
Event Director Loretta Sales looks forward to what will prove to be a landmark 2014 show…
With visitor registration now in full flow, we have seen yet another big increase in the number of visitors pre-registered. As you enter the show you will be greeted by the Timber Connect Stand, designed and built by Atmos, who provided us with the amazing WorldScape last year. Once again they will be working closely with the sponsors DHH Timber and The Cutting Room to provide a striking information desk at the entrance to the show. Here visitors, exhibitors and speakers will all be able to receive directions and information on any part of the event.
I look forward to being part of a busy and vibrant show in October. See you there!
This year is turning into the most exciting year so far. In our fourth year, we are well and truly ‘On the Map.’ Not only have we record numbers of exhibitors, but also the most overseas companies ever present at our event. These include Ghana, Poland, Latvia, Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Canada, USA and Malaysia - I think this means we can proudly boast that Timber Expo is now global! This is excellent news because it means a constant and progressive presence of new products, innovative ideas and fresh applications to the UK market, combined with exciting integration between international companies and UK merchants and distributors.
Moving the show to October has been particularly beneficial as it provides us with the opportunity of co-locating with W14 – the show which takes place every two years for machinery and timber furniture manufacturers. A walkway between the shows ensures that visitors can enjoy both events during the 07 and 08 October. This feels like another exciting integration for our markets. Once again, the content of the seminars in our two Timber Focus Seminar Theatres is top drawer and FREE to visitors. The STA sponsored Fabric First Seminar Theatre is delivered and built by several members of the STA demonstrating the variety of products used in a timber frame building. Whilst the
Both Toolbox Talks Theatres will be a showcase for exhibitors to explain and present the products displayed on their stands. One of these is built using SIPs technology and sponsored by Hemsec, also providing a lounge to continue discussions after the presentations. The second is sponsored by Wood for Good who will hold a morning of presentations on 07 October. Those needing a well-earned break between stand visits and the free seminars will be able to gather their thoughts and a coffee in the Visitor Lounge, with materials and sponsorship provided by Hanson Plywood. It is still not too late to get involved with the exhibition. With six weeks to the show we have a handful of exhibition stands remaining, so please get in touch if you would like to be involved. I will happily advise on the stands we can offer and help find a location within the show to suit your business. The showcase glulam lounges will be made from the same quality timber that EcoCurves uses to build its signature buildings. “EcoCurves are manufactured from high quality European coniferous timber cut into thin layers and laminated in a powerful hydraulic press to form its final shape,” said Paweł Cygulski, Marketing Manager for Jagram S.A. “Modern machinery and the use of high quality raw materials enables us to produce structural arches with a span up to 26m.” “We decided to sponsor Timber Expo again as we believe it is the best place to show our capability to manufacture unique and great looking products. With that idea in mind, this year EcoCurves is providing the VIP and Press Lounge and these exclusive areas will let everyone at the show experience our idea of creating glulam arches.”

STA THEATRE PREVIEW > TIMBER EXPO 2014
STA SEMINAR THEATRE PREVIEW Timber Expo returns to the Birmingham NEC this October & the Structural Timber Association’s (STA) presence at the event will be bigger & better than ever before
The STA seminar theatre will host a range of keynote speakers from across the timber, engineering and architectural sectors
For the first time, the STA has secured the main seminar theatre at the event, with the theatre itself being built by STA members.
When complete, the STA seminar theatre will host a range of keynote speakers from across the timber, engineering and architectural sectors.
The aim of this is to build the structure collaboratively, with members working together to contribute time, skills, expertise and materials to the endeavour.
Each of the seminars – which have been organised by TRADA – will be chaired by a leading industry figure and will focus on the different challenges currently facing the sector.
This will be the first large-scale project that our members have worked on together, although we will draw on the experience of our new colleagues from UKSIPS, who have worked together to deliver large structures of this type at previous events.
The area will also feature an STA lounge, where members can host meetings and network with current and potential clients throughout the event.
The construction of the STA seminar theatre provides the opportunity to showcase the latest in structural timber technologies. The venture also allows us the chance to present our skills of collaboration and partnership; an area that our industry currently excels in. With the need for partnership working rising up the agenda of the construction industry with the introduction of BIM, this gives us the chance to show just what we can do.

This year’s event is expected to attract over 5000 visitors, from both the UK and an increasing international market
Now in its fourth year, Timber Expo has become the main annual meeting place for timber professionals, offering our industry the chance to demonstrate how our products can deliver strong, sustainable build solutions. This year’s event is expected to attract over 5000 visitors, from both the UK and an increasing international market, including the sector’s most influential organisations, individuals, commentators and business leaders. GOLD SPONSOR STAND: B20
COME AND SEE US ON STAND B20 Our stand will be the focal point for a series of short presentations given by our technical teams specialising in energy and ventilation, materials and engineering. They are designed to give an insight into the methodologies used and recent process improvements which make our procedures more streamlined and efficient. In addition to this, two of our sector managers will lead two Toolbox Talks. Luke Adams, Sector Manager for Windows and Doors, will be talking about the fenestration and door sector and how manufacturers can ensure compliance to building regulations. George Higgs, Sector Manager for Building Services, will be holding a presentation covering solutions to the Building Regulations (part L) which requires that both U-values and junction ψ-values be calculated by ‘competent’ individuals. In his presentation, George will highlight a competency scheme to assess and certify competence in relation to U-value and condensation risk calculations. He will also cover how the BBA has helped to provide an accredited thermal bridging scheme. The aim of which is to provide junction ψ-values that are accurate, flexible in scope and easy to use.
The British Board of Agrément (BBA) is one of the UK’s leading notified bodies offering approval, certification and test services to manufacturers of products and systems supplying the construction industry. We also certify installers of these systems who can demonstrate their competence and professionalism. Developed over six decades, our expertise is aimed at helping companies realise their potential in today’s competitive environment. BBA approval is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers, and industry insurers including the NHBC. At the show we will be promoting our certification, test, management systems and inspection services and highlighting some recent new developments. For instance we have recently assessed some new composite window systems with our first approval being Munster Joinery’s Passiv AluClad system. It consists of two frames made from different materials – the external one is powder-coated aluminium and the internal is made of laminated timber.
There is plenty to come and see at the BBA stand B20, situated right opposite the main entrance. For more information contact Phil Page, email: ppage@bba.star.co.uk
We have also approved a series of timber frame insulation systems and some of these clients are exhibiting at the show. Similarly we have expertise in assessing paints and wood stains suitable for use on joinery and timber cladding and fencing.

PRODUCTS SmartPly FR/FR Build OSB3 was developed in response to the Structural Timber Association’s (STA) “Design guide to separating distances during construction” for timber frame buildings above 600m2 total floor area. The panel is treated with flame retardant during the manufacturing process and designed to retain the normal woodworking characteristics of OSB3 rather than those of post treated alternatives. All products are manufactured using FSC certified wood, with a fully audited chain of custody process in place at both SmartPly and Medite mills. The production facilities are local to the forest of origin minimizing the effect of transportation on the embodied energy of the products. The range of Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB products including the new product offerings are being exhibited on Stand D40 and Mike Harrison, Marketing Manager at Coillte Panel Products will be speaking about OSB innovation at the Toolbox Talks at Timber Expo. He will cover topics on what OSB is, how it is made, its performance characteristics, product applications and product innovation of SmartPly OSB.
Coillte Panel Products is part of Coillte, a leading natural resources company which owns and manages over 442,000 hectares of FSC® certified forest. Coillte Panel Products manufactures both highly regarded Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB products, which are synonymous with quality, choice and innovation. Coillte Panel Products places great importance on research and development. It focuses on investment in product advances, in order to keep its specifiers and end users at the forefront of the latest market developments. Product quality, performance and environmental credentials all combine under Coillte’s market-leading brands, Medite and SmartPly, providing reliability and reassurance to all sectors of the construction market. SmartPly recently launched ToughPly a general-purpose OSB3 board with a double-sided surface coating that provides a smooth and site-ready option with zero added formaldehyde. ADVERTORIAL > A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BBA > TIMBER EXPO 2014
ADVERTORIAL
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BBA
Originally a government backed organisation, the BBA is now an independent non-profit distributing company and has become the cornerstone of certification and inspection services within the construction industry.
Original schemes still operating today Over time the range of products being assessed by the BBA has grown to a point where Agrément Certificates now cover more than 200 different product areas and our inspection services, which assess installers of BBA approved products, has also grown rapidly.
The concept of an independent service for the technical assessment of new construction products was developed in France after the Second World War.
years due to the technical excellence, impartiality and independence demonstrated by our staff and the excellent track records of the products we have approved.
The Agrément Board, the forerunner of the British Board of Agrément (BBA), was formed in 1966 based on the French Agrément system following a recommendation by a government formed committee. The French word ‘Agrément’ literally means ‘approval’ which sums up the work that the BBA carries out.
The early years
Our certificates are recognised by building control, local authorities, industry insurers and key trade associations in the construction industry. This trust in the BBA’s services has developed over the
WWW.TIMBER-EXPO.CO.UK
The main remit of the BBA is, as it was back in those early days, to evaluate products which fall outside the scope of British Standards, and award its Agrément Certificates to those which it could prove were fit for purpose. It was originally conceived that the BBA would undertake assessments based on testing carried out at other laboratories. However, it soon became clear that there was a need for the BBA to have its own test facilities.
One of the first schemes linking product and installer directly began with injected cavity wall insulation, assessed and tested in the early 1970’s, and quickly followed by an installer scheme designed to ensure that the installation of such systems were carried out professionally. These schemes are still in running today albeit with modifications over the years to take into account the changing nature of the industry. By 1980 the BBA’s independence from government was confirmed following an extensive review and it remains a commercial and totally independent organisation to this day.

NORDAN TIMBER SLIDING DOOR: PASS
The assessment process
Inspection services
The BBA’s testing and assessment procedures can take anything from two to 12 months to complete depending on the type of product being assessed and the scope it is required to cover.
The BBA’s Inspection Services is a rapidly growing part of the BBA’s business in both third party and BBA devised schemes. The rationale behind this is that it is all very well having a BBA Approved product, but if it is not installed properly then it will not perform to its optimum level.
The BBA’s sales team is the first point of contact for manufacturers and, after an application form is completed, the BBA’s technical people take over and draw up a contract of the work needed to thoroughly investigate if the product is ‘fit for purpose’. Upon client approval of the contract our work can begin. The product is assessed within five main categories – safety, durability, habitability, practicability and maintenance. Safety checks include strength and stability, behaviour under impact, toxicity of fumes and other health hazards. Habitability relates to behaviour concerning thermal and acoustic insulation, light and ventilation and prevention of damp or rain penetration. Durability is concerned with resistance to wear and tear, weathering and corrosion while practicability checks look at transport and storage on site, handling during installation and whether specialised fixing techniques are required.
The BBA provides inspection services for some of the main utility companies, the fenestration self-assessment scheme (FENSA) and the government licensed Trustmark schemes as well as its own BBA approved installer schemes. We can also approve installers to PAS 2030, one of the necessary requirements if installers want to do work under the Green Deal.
To ensure the ongoing integrity and value of an Agrément Certificate periodic checks are made by the BBA on the Certificate holder with a full review every three years.

DEFINING BETTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT > TIMBER EXPO 2014
DEFINING BETTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT BIM, despite being a small acronym, is a big word in construction. While there has been a lot of hype around BIM over the last few years we see the conversation is starting to shift toward companies asking – what’s really in it for me? Duncan Reed, Digital Construction Process Manager at Tekla explains… BIM4Housing
BIM4Housing is a cross-industry group open to all organisations involved in the design, construction, management and delivery of housing, both private and affordable. Membership of BIM4Housing is reflective of the sector, involving clients, contractors, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors and other interested bodies. BIM4Housing aims to introduce those involved in the housing sector to the benefits and opportunities available in using BIM. BIM4Housing operates under Constructing Excellence in the Housing Group and represents the whole supply chain in typical Constructing Excellence style. It wants to introduce group members to the advantages that BIM may bring – including efficiencies, clash detection, risk management etc.
Over the last 20 years, Tekla has provided the most complete and advanced structural detailing platform providing 3D intelligent models to the construction industry in a variety of materials. The increasing prevalence of BIM in project design and construction has provided demand for collaboration between design team members by the communication and federation of data rich models. Models are important but they aren’t the be all and end of the information revolution – it’s the data that’s important, and for many in the industry that will still be shared in familiar 2D products like MS Word or Excel.
While of course at all times emphasising the need to work within a collaborative culture and with a totally integrated supply chain throughout the complete process from inception to operation. BIM4Housing consists of members from across the housing sector and is keen to attract participation from key sector players such as RSLs, private house builders and indeed members from throughout the supply chain. The BIM4Housing website provides a contact point and information for members as well as a platform for its activities and is available to members of the BIM4Housing group only. It is available via: www.constructingexcellencesw.org.uk
BIM4Housing will be hosting a FREE Half day seminar programme in the Toolbox Talks Theatre at Timber Expo on 08 October 2014.

TIMBER EXPO 2014 < DEFINING BETTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
Datasets and analysis BIM allows all teams involved to have all their data for an asset in one place. It allows for meaningful analysis across a wider selection of business information to be carried out rather than making business decisions based upon anecdotal guesses. By combining disparate data sets together, linked around a model of the asset, it becomes possible to review infrastructure data in a much more powerful way and as a result manage assets better. Implementing and using shared data sets with feedback of what actually works, proven by hard evidence, will improve timber construction design in the future. However, this shift of how we manage information requires more than just using software, it requires a behavioural change. This is the real change that BIM brings to businesses. It breaks down silos and enables for individuals, groups and departments to share information openly and transparently. This doesn’t mean that all information needs to be shared with everyone all the time – BIM provides the opportunity for relevant information to live in the model and only be accessed when needed.
For example, the catalogue provided by Tekla features virtually every timber size and grade used in construction. The addition of I beams and open web joists, the wall panel, floor cassette and truss tools ensure fast, accurate frame design increasing productivity and reducing costs both at the design stage, and with the clash check and 4D tools, at the construction stage also. Panel tools with options for window placement, door placement, sheathing options, vapour and breather membrane, insulation mean that panels can be specified and modelled very quickly. All the items in the panels can then be reported on for accurate material take off.
BIM can mean something different to everyone and that’s not a bad thing. But better data sets make for better decision making and help owners, designers and installers work much more efficiently from a position of knowledge rather than ignorance.

Workflow structure While BIM has and is continuing to help evolve and change the timber construction industry the next big step will be harnessing remote sensing and telemetry. The IFC export from Tekla Structures sits firmly within the BIM workflow providing the ability to share models with other BIM authoring packages such as ArchiCAD, Microstation and Revit. Data can also be linked to ERP programming and structural analysis packages and exports data for use in automated fabrication. Real time feedback on the performance of structural applications will allow managers to understand how their assets are actually performing. And automating processes so that out of range of figures trigger further analysis or inspections creates the ability for pre-emptive maintenance to be carried out in a structured way rather than just having reactive or end of life strategies in place.

TIMBER TRENDS TTF & BWF MAY MERGE The MOU says the chief executive of the new company would also be joint chief executive of the TTF and BWF, supported by heads of woodworking and timber trade. “This is about linking up two strong, well-established organisations, both in good financial shape, who are growing and developing well to further enhance what we do,” said BWF Chief Executive Iain McIlwee. “It’s a very exciting opportunity,” said Mr King. “I believe this will raise the profile and understanding
The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and British Woodworking Federation (BWF) have sent out a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for consideration by their respective members, proposing the formation of a joint company headed by a single chief executive. The latest move follows comments from TTF president Stephen King at the organisation’s recent AGM about the two bodies increasing their co-operation. In line with the TTF’s support for more unified timber supply chain representation, he said, it was ‘open to a possible closer working relationship’. The MOU stresses that the two would continue as separate entities, with no dilution of respective roles. But a new company would ‘bridge’ the bodies, with a board comprising up to three representatives each from the TTF and BWF governing bodies. While serving the specific interests of their membership, the BWF and TTF teams would work closely together and collaborate on ‘complementary activity’ and ‘amalgamation of core activities’.

of the benefits that the timber supply chain provides to the economy, environment and individual customer sectors. It could drive research and enable projects to influence policy makers, improve market development and supply chain interaction and aid collaboration to resolve common problems and grow markets.” BWF and TTF memberships are being consulted and if there is sufficient support the MOU could implemented by the end of August. CLT DUO SET FOR LONDON SKYLINE
A new development from Regal Homes in Hackney, will hold the title of Europe’s largest cross laminated timber (CLT) structure. The cutting edge development will consist of 121 private rental units, which will remain in Regal Homes’ rental portfolio.
While Banyan Wharf, a ten-storey building located in Shoreditch will be Europe’s tallest CLT structure once completed in April 2015. Mark Bryan, Regal Homes Production Director said: “Both of these buildings will represent two significant structures for London, using construction methods that are not yet commonly used. As a mid-sized developer, these developments represent a significant undertaking and I am proud that Regal Homes is leading the way in using this carbon reducing technology.” Source: www.cityam.com /1403279082/wood-you-buyhome-meet-londons-newtimber-homes

OFFSITE CONSTRUCTION CRUCIAL TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Offsite construction will be critical to speeding up the delivery of new affordable housing for councils and housing association, according to Alex Goodfellow of Stewart Milne Timber Systems. The Government’s Affordable Housing Programme 2015-18 encourages increased partnership between local authorities, housing associations and private contractors, saying offsite construction and other forms of ‘construction innovation’ will be key to speeding up building, reducing waste and delivering better value for money.
But Alex Goodfellow, Group Managing Director at Stewart Milne Timber Systems, believes providers and builders need to go a step further and put greater focus on the lifecycle cost-benefits of offsite construction, arguing that it could save money in both the short and long term. He also backed a Fabric First approach that will ensure energy efficiency is built into a new home, rather than trying to add bolt-on technologies at a later date. “Items such as timber systems and bathroom pods can be manufactured offsite, which means more efficient builds with lower ongoing costs. This would allow affordable housing providers to develop future-proof, sustainable housing stock quickly and cost effectively,” said Goodfellow.
TIMBER EXPO > NEC BIRMINGHAM > 07-08 OCTOBER 2014
“Homes which are intrinsically energy efficient – because they’ve been built with efficiency in mind - result in fewer repair bills and lower energy costs. Offsite construction also means the build process is a great deal quicker, so getting tenants in and rent payments established happens faster. Energy efficient homes are also unlikely to need expensive retrofits or alterations as they age, which is a significant benefit for affordable housing providers.” The UK is currently facing a significant housing shortfall, with research from Savills showing the South of England alone is forecast to need at least 160,000 new homes over the next five years. SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR GLASGOW 2014 GAMES VILLAGE Now the 2014 Commonwealth Games are over, the focus is on making the state-of-the-art Athletes’ Village located in Dalmarnock into a new low carbon, sustainable community. The 35-hectare site designed by RMJM Architects features a wide range of homes and apartments. Approximately 10% of the village’s energy is generated by renewable energy sources onsite and this has contributed to the site’s BREEAM Excellent rating achieved at the design stage. Glasgow City Council in conjunction with private sector consortium City Legacy, plans to bring further social and economic value to the regeneration area by creating a sustainable community comprising over 1,400 affordable new homes.
A selection of detached, semidetached, terraced houses and apartments will be available, all built to a high standard using sustainable materials. The mix of private and social housing will be extremely energy efficient and set around extensive landscaped areas. A combined heat and power (CHP) plant will ensure that heating bills are considerably lower than comparable-sized houses. Each property will be fitted with a meter rather than an individual boiler so residents will only pay for the energy they use instead of receiving estimated bills.
The flexible design of the accommodation allows for a relatively simple post-Games retrofit. Additional facilities including a 120-bed care home for the elderly, transport connections and pedestrian routes will be constructed as part of the project. Cabinet secretary for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said: “Beyond the Games, the Athletes’ Village will help bring lasting change in the east end of Glasgow, demonstrating the legacy of the Games for local communities. The village looks great, the athletes are set and Scotland is ready to cheer them on to success.” Source: www.citylegacy.co.uk

Glulam Solutions has recently completed the Skinny House – a building only 2.85m wide. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) three-storey building is being constructed in Aberdeen. The student accommodation, which comprises six studio units in two blocks linked by a central stairway, sits on a narrow site between a road and a railway cutting. The lightweight structure, slim profiles of the individual elements and three-day installation period kept disruption to a minimum. The site is due for completion in August.
Lonza’s wood protection sales increased in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2013. The division “continued to improve performance as expected”, the company said in its sixmonth financial report. The strongest performance was in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region - the latter driven by strong sales in Australia and New Zealand’s strengthening construction industries. In Europe, sales did particularly well in Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Stora Enso has appointed Karl-Henrik Sundström as CEO. He took up the position on 1 August. Sundström had been deputy CEO since July last year, and chief financial officer and executive vice-president for a year prior to that. He had previously been chief financial officer with a variety of companies, including Ericsson, and in 2004, 2005 and 2006 he was named best chief financial officer in Europe by Institutional Investor magazine. “Karl-Henrik Sundström has wide global experience in manufacturing industries and a solid background in financial management.” said Stora Enso chairman Gunnar Brock. The Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) has set out its spending plans that indicate support for more than 40,000 new homes by 2018. The HCA said that 160 housing providers across England would share £886m of affordable homes funding with a total of 43,821 new affordable homes delivered across 2,697 schemes. The investment from government will be combined with private finance to deliver the £23 billion programme. A fifth of the homes will be built using “advanced housing manufacture”, where parts are manufactured in factories before being assembled onsite.
The RICS UK Construction Market Survey Q2 2014 reveals skills shortage concerns in the construction industry now stand at their highest level since 2008. Alan Muse, RICS Director of Built Environment, said: “The UK construction market is mirroring the natural consequence of a rise in demand after five subdued years. The upsurge in housing demand is creating pressure across an industry which failed to invest in attracting new talent or in the training of existing employees at the height of the economic downturn and this in turn is creating similar effects among material supply.”

GUTEX WOOD FIBRE INSULATION GUTEX wood fibre insulation boards are made with post-industrial recycled wood chips and shavings of spruce & pine
Optimum combination of heat storage capacity and thermal insulation GUTEX wood fibreboard’s high density, combined with their high specific heat capacity, results in a material that heats up slowly and has outstanding thermal diffusivity. The boards can delay temperature rise by 10 or more hours. This thermal delay can help maintain a comfortable internal temperature on warmer days, and maintain comfortable temperatures at night.
Environmental benefits – carbon sink/FSC-certified
The insulation boards are produced by using an innovative dry method, which is much less energy intensive than the conventional wet method and minimises additions of binders and hydrophobic wax. The result is the ultimate natural insulation material – insulation with a wood content of 94-96% that has superb properties for interior and exterior applications.

SPECIFIERS FORUM Join the Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum the easy and efficient way to do business Oliver Novakovic, Technical and Innovation Director at Barratt Developments offered his perspective:
With less than two months to go, some of the most well regarded construction companies, housing developers, architects, engineers and specifiers have signed up to take part in the Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum, taking place at Timber Expo at the NEC on 07 & 08 of October 2014. Feedback on the 2013 event was extremely positive with 100% of participants confirming they would like to take part in the 2014 event. The ‘tried and tested’ format is simple – buyer & specifiers have an online profile detailing the products and services they are looking to source or research - Timber Expo exhibitors can request appointments via an online diary system with those who have a genuine desire to conduct purposeful business meetings.
“This is not purely a networking event,” said Event Director, Loretta Sales. “For Timber Expo exhibitors it is a vital part of the show. For buyers and specifiers it is both time and cost effective – they are in control and can accept or decline meeting requests. Where in the UK can you meet in one place, innovative companies from across the globe providing sustainable timber solutions to build public and private buildings - from care homes, schools and hospitals to housing developments and shopping centres?” This year for the first time a team from Barratt Developments and Barratt Homes are taking part. As one of the largest and most well-known housing developers, the sustainability and speed of construction offered by structural timber is of great interest to them. Timber may be one of the oldest building materials but the sector is now one of the most innovative.
“Taking part in the Buyers & Specifiers Forum will enable Barratt Developments & Barratt Homes to research new innovations in sustainable timber systems and extend our network of suppliers. We have been building homes for more than 50 years and in this time we have grown to become one of the nation’s largest housebuilders. As the demand for energy efficient homes increases, it is our vision to be recognised as the nation’s leading housebuilder, creating communities where people aspire to live.”

CASE STUDY: CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER (CLT) AT ICKBURGH PMLD SEN SCHOOL A groundbreaking specialist school for 150 pupils aged between 2-19 years with profound and multiple learning difficulties is due to open in September 2014 in the London Borough of Hackney.
The new Ickburgh profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) SEN School, which is expected to achieve BREEAM Very Good, has been built by main contractor McLaren Construction and installed by specialist timber engineers, Eurban. The building consists of a three storey CLT superstructure made from PEFCcertified Austrian spruce and pine sourced and manufactured by Stora Enso Building and Living which is

bonded using formaldehyde-free and environmentally friendly adhesives making it suitable for internal exposure. The new school, which is designed by Avanti Architects, is being delivered through Hackney Schools for the Future Limited (HSFL), a partnership formed by London Borough of Hackney and Mouchel Babcock Education (MBE) in 2008. Building with CLT provided a
significant reduction to the construction programme and the project was delivered 20% faster and provided a 2% saving on cost against the project value. In addition to its speed and cost saving benefits, the structural spanning characteristics of CLT lent itself to the very cellular layout of a special needs school. As a PMLD School, Ickburgh has extremely bespoke issues and a system build type of school is unusual for this level of need.

TIMBER EXPO 2014 < STORA ENSO < CASE STUDY
Whereas generally the process would be to design the building then specify the system, at Ickburgh the system was specified and the school built around it.
‘teaching clusters’ or ‘learning suites’ that offer the pupils a clearly identifiable ‘home base’ with their own front door, classroom, outdoor space and supporting structure and four 26 person-sized lifts have been installed to take two or three pupils at a time to four of the five clusters which are located on the upper floors. Internally Ickburgh has been designed to embrace CLT’s natural qualities which give the building a feeling of richness and warmth. Each classroom space features the natural wood on its ceiling and one wall, and the School’s entrance along with the main hall and one wall within the circulation areas of each teaching cluster is also left exposed.
The design of Ickburgh is also unusual in that it is built on three storeys. Special needs schools have traditionally been single storey to allow easy access and circulation for wheelchairs, beds and bespoke equipment but building on multiple storeys is becoming increasingly common especially in London where land is at a premium. Building a special needs school at height presents a very specific set of challenges about how pupils are going to move around the building; questions such as what size of lift, how long each lift run takes to arrive, pick up and close its doors, time spent moving between floors, retrieving the lift and collecting more people all had to be considered in the design of the lifts. The school, which has been designed to evoke a feeling of ‘home from home’, has five
A central core houses the centralised services of medical care and specialist services, along with a specially equipped sensory room, play areas and hydrotherapy pool. The atrium space created at the heart of the building also acts as the social centre of the school with its ground floor cafe where parents, staff and pupils can spend time together in the relaxed environment. Views into the atrium are provided from gallery spaces on the upper floors that are protected with vertically spaced timber fins which enable pupils to enjoy the view in safety. The A frame design of the building allows the clusters to look out to the garden which is zoned to include areas for growing vegetables and herbs along with a specialist play equipment zone as well as an area for free play and five aside football. The margin on the side of the building has spaces that are ‘owned’ by each of the classrooms and on the second floor there is an outdoor terrace, which helps to reduce lift movements at break times – a critical factor in the complex calculations involved in planning access and movement around the school.

The school is largely naturally ventilated, with the majority of the building equipped with windows that open. A limited amount of mechanical ventilation has been built in for hygiene facilities and to provide more flexibility for pupils with acute sensitivity to internal environmental conditions. Underfloor heating, high levels of insulation, efficient boilers and PV panels on the roof help to meet the renewables obligation.

TRADA LIVE ZONE > TIMBER EXPO 2014
BM TRADA ‘GOES ‘LIVE’ AT TIMBER EXPO BM TRADA will be showcasing its timber expertise to the masses at this year’s Timber Expo with a new ‘live zone’ featuring a range of demonstrations designed to showcase its timber & fire credentials.
The international testing, inspection, certification and compliance body, will host a wide range of practical demonstrations – all given by experts in their field. Kyle Morris, BM TRADA Senior Technical Officer – windows and doors, will demonstrate elements of the PAS 24 test on an enhanced security timber window whilst Vic Kearley, Principal Technical Officer – timber, will be using different types of material to demonstrate slip resistance and carry out a soft body impact test to show the difference in performance between different timber floor types. Meanwhile, Lewis Taylor, Timber Frame Consultant – timber, will conduct a timber frame demonstration looking at the different design and build aspects of a typical timber frame construction.
Additionally, visitors to the stand will be able to see first-hand the differences between a correctly and incorrectly installed fire door as well as just how effective a correctly specified and installed fire door can be at resisting the spread of fire via a burnt example housed in a Perspex display case. Nick Clifford, Technical Consultant will be carrying out timber species identification demonstrations, examining different species and demonstrating the methods employed to verify the wood species in a product. Visitors will also get the chance to ‘look down the microscope’ to see for themselves. Meanwhile Phil O’Leary, Senior Technical Consultant will conduct a timber strength grading demonstration providing visitors with the opportunity to get an overview of the process of grading timber - and the difference in approach between softwood and hardwood. BM TRADA’s Technical Experts will also cover some of the hottest topics in the timber industry as part of its seminar programme at this year’s Timber Expo. Popular timber subjects including timber species verification and the EUTR, timber in historic buildings – where Andrew Pitman, Technical Business Development Manager – timber, will talk about the importance
and challenges involved in assessing the condition and strength of historic timber - and CE marking versus third party certification will all be discussed on the stand. In addition, Jane Owen, Head of Sales and Marketing, UK Certification Services, will deliver a presentation on Willmott Dixon and WWF UK – a Project Certification case study while Simon Bailey, Product Assessor – fire, will look at the fire safety challenges and solutions for historic buildings. On top of this, BM TRADA will be hosting surgery sessions, where visitors will be given the chance to talk/ask any questions they might have relating to one of the many timber-related subjects available. To complete the programme, the BM TRADA stand will host the shortlisted entries into the ‘Velocity in British Timber student competition’. At 3.30pm on Tuesday each student will be given the opportunity to present their projects, talking about their inspiration for their designs and their use of timber. Following this, the judges will announce the winner in Timber Expo’s CLT theatre at 5pm. Each demonstration/seminar will last around 20 minutes and will be hosted on BM TRADA’s stand at F30. www.bmtrada.com

W14 > TIMBER EXPO 2014
W14 – THE NATIONAL UK SHOW FOR THE JOINERY & FURNITURE INDUSTRIES. W14 – one of the UK’s largest trade exhibitions, covering three halls at the NEC – will this year co-locate with Timber Expo to offer all timber professionals an unprecedented UK opportunity to get to grips with the leading flexible and low carbon construction material
WWW.TIMBER-EXPO.CO.UK
“This co-location reflects the co-operation between the sectors we serve” For furniture and joinery manufacturers of all types the show provides a unique opportunity to see running machinery, materials and components – in fact all essential equipment and supplies to the industry. Entry to the show is free for trade visitors.

Suppliers to those manufacturers enjoy a perfect high profile opportunity to show their latest product developments to an industry which constantly searches for differentiated product and production capability. A rising UK economy in general has driven significant expansion in the sector making the expanded W14 show is one of the most important editions in its 40 year heritage. “There is an obvious logic to W14 and Timber Expo taking place at the same time within the same venue where possible, says Angela McGowan, W14 Exhibition Director. “Delivering something extra to the visitor has to be the goal of every exhibition organiser. Perhaps most important of all, this co-location reflects the co-operation between the sectors we serve. Partnerships between those specifying and supplying materials and manufacturers increasingly point the way to sharpening the competitive edge of so many UK industries. Ours is certainly no exception and we look forward to high cross-over visitors between the events. Such is the natural flow between the two shows that this has been an easy co-location to arrange.

BRONZE SPONSOR > FRUY TIER/ISO-CHEMIE > TIMBER EXPO 2014
BRONZE SPONSOR STAND: A53
FRUYTIER A strong and reliable partner and was founded in 1946 as a softwood merchant, located in the middle of forested regions recognised for their high quality softwoods. Production grew steadily to reach today a daily capacity of 8,000m³. With 11 sawmills in Europe, the Group is today among the European top 10 of biggest softwood sawmills. The annual turnover is about 200 million euros, and the company employs more than 600 people in Belgium, Germany and France. The annual production capacity is more than 1 million m³. In addition, the Group embarked in 1997 in the forward processing of sawn products: kiln-drying, planning, mouldings, gluing, and pellet production facilities were built to produce softwood products of higher added value. Species mainly produced are Spruce, Douglas, Larch, and Pine. • FRUYTIER wide product range covers not only standard products, but also products made to customer specifications for minimum ordered quantities. • FRUYTIER service is what makes the Group distinctive. Within short lead times, the Group can supply large quantities of freshly sawn softwood directly from the forest. • Sawmilling to order (not to stock) allows for enhanced flexibility and lumber quality.

Externally audited, the Group maintains, among others, the following certifications: PEFC, FSC, NIMP 15, ATG, CTIB-TCHN and FCBA.
ISO-CHEMIE The technical requirements for energy efficient and long term building seals are increasing all the time. Our innovative product solutions have a positive effect on the energy balance of buildings, at the same time promoting a healthy internal climate. Factors such as airtightness, permanent movement, weather resistance, emissions free, thermal and acoustic insulation as well as humidity and fire protection are important properties of our building seals which conform to multinational standards. ISO-Chemie has a range of products which bring specific benefits when building with timber, or using timber components in construction. Not the least of which is overcoming large differential movement. Constantly improving and producing new innovative products is what we do. A good example on display at Timber Expo 2014 will be the new ISO-TOP WINFRAMER. This allows the windows and doors to be positioned in front of the internal wall so that they sit within the insulation layer, without the need for complex metal brackets which create non repeating thermal bridging. ISO-TOP WINFRAMER can support 200 kilos per linear metre, so even large Bi-Fold doors are not a problem. Any future replacement is also simplistic without excess renovation work as the window or door can be fixed directly into ISO-TOP WINFRAMER.

TENMAT Having won the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for Innovation and International Trade in consecutive years, Tenmat and its expanding range of Passive Fire Protection products is a true world leader. This has made Tenmat the clear choice for projects such as major hospitals, the 2012 Olympic Games Athletes Village and the 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village. Recently Tenmat has focused on the specialist requirements for improving the fire safety of timber buildings. Tenmat now offers a range of fire rated service penetration seals and wall cavity seals which have been fully tested and approved in these most onerous of applications. At Timber Expo 2014 Tenmat will be launching a simple and effective wall cavity fire barrier range which has been proven in a range of 21 comparison fire tests at BRE to outperform the more complicated and expensive traditional ‘cavity sock’ solutions. These new solutions based upon Tenmat’s unique intumescent material and unlike most ‘cavity sock’ solutions are fully tested in a whole range of common timber-based cavity designs.
