FINGERS CROSSED? HOPEFULLY… Rupert Scott, Membership & Marketing Manager at TRADA, said the organisation was delighted to be involved in such a groundbreaking design. “By bringing together students from the Architectural Association, engineers from Arup and our own technical expertise in timber, we believe we have created a truly innovative structure.”

The aesthetics of design is nothing if not subjective, but TRADA is hoping that the innovative structure – designed by the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture with Arup and dubbed, suitably, Fingers Crossed – will be an attention-winner at this year’s London Design Festival. Built from 9 mm birch plywood – supplied by TRADA member Hanson Plywood – the sculpture relies solely on friction, rather than metal connections, as a joining solution. Fingers Crossed is best described as a series of interlocking teeth – like giant timber combs – and is designed to exploit and celebrate the material behaviour of wood. The project, initiated as a collaboration between students from the Emergent Technologies and Design Programme at the AA, professional engineers at Arup and TRADA, the UK’s leading timber authority, is a real-life exploration of

the bending capacity and connection possibilities that timber panels provide by integrating structural and spatial performance into one elegant architectural solution. First staged in 2003, the London Design Festival is one of the world’s most important annual design events. In 2007, it introduced the first series of its Landmark Projects, which have now become the public face of the Festival. Timber has featured highly, most notably in last year’s Endless Stair sculpture, which was also engineered by Arup. Commenting on the design, Evan Greenberg, Studio Master, Emergent Technologies and Design Programme at the AA, said: “We have designed a pavilion with varied lighting effects and a playful, interactive landscape. This landscape, providing seating for visitors and organising circulation through the space, also performs structurally, lending stiffness at the base of the arch by locking it in place.”

Andrew Lawrence, Director at Arup, said: “Fingers Crossed is an incredibly complex design, borne out of numerous trials, and yet the simplicity of its aesthetics is breathtaking. We hope visitors to the London Design Festival will be equally impressed by the beauty of the sculpture – as well as the flexibility that timber has afforded in the design process.”

David Flynn Construction turned to ToughPly when a late night fire led to the closure and reconstruction of the Eddie Rockets City Diner outlet in Waterford, Ireland. The panels made the perfect hoarding choice, delivering both structural and durable properties to provide perimeter protection for the public from the works within. The pre-finished double-sided boards offered significant time savings for the team too, with no need for sanding or priming, the resulting hoarding could be painted directly. “The only other alternative was plywood,” explained David Flynn from David Flynn Construction. “However, having used SmartPly SiteProtect as a hoarding solution for a number of other projects, we were confident with the durability of the OSB. The SmartPly ToughPly panel, which is sanded and coated on both sides, allowed us to save considerable time onsite as we could directly paint on the surface without extra preparation.”

It offers builders, joiners and DIYers alike a pre-finished, double-sided panel that is reliable for a variety of structural and non-structural applications. It has long been recognised that airtightness is a critical part of building a low energy construction, with additional benefits concerning comfort, health and structural durability. As we insulate our buildings to historically high levels, the negative affect of air leakage increases significantly. Over the life of a building it must be self-sufficient in itself in terms of both thermal performance and with regard to moisture management if it is to be healthy and durable over its lifetime. Ecological Building Systems will give an overview of airtightness, consequences of a lack of airtightness and common failure areas and then look at how to implement an airtightness strategy from the design stage to the final test on site.

To create energy efficient homes we must not only select the insulation materials to suit the application we must also apply the insulation and associated building materials correctly. If we are to get serious about insulation in the future, insulation manufacturers, distributors and the retailer will have to be clearer in their message to the consumer/homeowner and ensure there is adequate information outlining the dangers of getting it wrong. Simply by saying we have always used certain products in the past does not mean we are getting it right.

This talk explores the amazing journey Wiehag have been on with this project, from early design to handing over the finished grid shell. PROFILE: ROOFSPACE SOLUTIONS As part of the Avonside Group, RoofSpace Solutions design, manufacture and install panelised roofing systems throughout the UK including the cutting edge I-Roof. Based in Stratford upon Avon, RoofSpace Solutions was set up in January 2008 and delivers a Fabric First approach and roofing package from wall plate upwards with up to four units completed in a day.

The I-Roof is a timber-based, offsite manufactured roofing system. RoofSpace ensure no chemical blowing elements are used during the creation of the insulation meaning the global warming potential arising from its creation is zero.

Q: How has the TTF grown, changed and developed since you took over? Simply put the TTF has transformed itself into a modern executive led trade association. The look and feel of the organisation, the reputational improvement of the industry and the steadily improved financial position of the organisation, together with the near doubling of our membership stand testament to our success.

Q: What do you feel the successes and high points have been during your tenure? Any particular low points?

As Chief Executive of the UK Timber Trade Federation, John White has been a familiar face to everybody involved in the timber sector over the last nine years. Always promoting TTF members to the maximum and always promoting timber at all levels as the number one sustainable construction material. He will be a tough act to follow. Before leaving the Building Centre for good, he took a few minutes to speak to Gary Ramsay…

The high point for me was watching as the EU Timber Regulation went through the various tortuous legislative discussions in Brussels to emerge virtually as the TTF had suggested it should be framed. A lot of effort went into achieving that. Why was that important? Because the EUTR places the requirement on the trade that the TTF’s own due diligence tool, the RPP, had done for a number of years before. This meant TTF members seamlessly complied with the new legislation ensuring the minimum business disruption whilst at the same time burnishing the responsible sourcing credentials we had worked so hard to achieve. Low points – the very tough decisions on redundancies that had to be made in the early days of my tenure. It is the toughest job in management. Disappointments – the current low take up of the NVQs and Apprenticeships we have worked so hard to develop with ProSkills. If the industry doesn’t use them the funding will disappear. Training our people is one of the best ways to improve our businesses.

Q: What can the timber industry and its members do better to make more of an impact on the wider construction industry and create opportunities for the material? The entire supply chain needs to work together to better understand the end customer markets. In construction this means we have to fully understand the procurement process and to address the skills and knowledge gaps in our sector to come up with the solutions to the concerns and issues that the construction sector customer has. Our competing sectors, with whom we should incidentally seek to find some of those solutions, are better at this that we are. We can do it. We identified that customers were finding it difficult to access the lifecycle impact data they needed from the timber sector to allow them to scope timber solutions against steel and concrete ones. Through wood for good the timber industry has now generated an open source data base that allows them to do just that. I also think the timber industry has to come together into one body to generate the representational weight to be able to access a seat at the top table of discussions. We also have to be ‘better’ companies to our customers. That means upping the way we look and behave. We should be striving to deliver professionalism by introducing things like Quality Management Systems, Investors in People and Environmental Management Systems that demonstrate to our customers that they really should do business with us because we are committed to delivering the highest quality service and products to them.

Q: Over the last few years – has ‘thinking sustainably’ become more important to the way business operate? Undoubtedly. The standards that now exist, the requirements of PQQs and ITTs, the requirements in company reporting as well as the moral imperative make sustainability a key element of a company’s offer. There is no getting away from it. Whether you agree with the ‘green agenda’ or not, it is business critical to shape your business around it in order to have a successful future.

Q: Is timber now proving itself to be the material of choice for greener construction? It has long been recognised as a fantastic construction material. Sustainably grown, as nearly all wood used in the UK is, this is the only material that is endlessly renewable, that sequesters and stores carbon, that has unrivalled performance, flexibility and aesthetics. There are barriers to greater wood use wrapped up in the way we present and represent ourselves, but if we can overcome these the future of construction is in my view a wooden one. Evidence is becoming clearer all the time for example of when we get it right the customer is delighted with the industry’s offer. The current acceleration in the growth of CLT is a great example. And on the back of its success we can articulate all the positive messages about wood which in turn leads to greater wood use across the piece.

Q: What can the timber industry do to work together better and more cohesively? For me this is a necessary and critical next step. The sector trade bodies must unite under one banner. The synergies that provides, the resource it brings and the representational weight that follows will mean that our stakeholder engagement from customer to politician can be ramped up significantly. We are definitely missing out on opportunities at the moment because we have a collective representational deficit as a result of all the timber related trade bodies. As a trade association professional I find it simply bonkers and struggle to understand why this is not a self-evident truth that everyone should swing behind addressing. I really hope that the Accord develops and grows to become that body and I hope it happens quickly. As I get closer to leaving the TTF the number of opportunities for timber grows. But at the same time a number of them slip by. My belief is that this agenda is so important that the industry should make it the number one priority.

Q: What direction do you hope to see the timber sector take over the next few years? See all of the above plus this one – we have to attract more women into our sector. Diversity is a strength.

Q: What has been the best timber building or use of timber you have seen in your time? There are so many. Every time I examine the Wood Awards shortlist I marvel at the beauty and ingenuity of the wooden buildings entered. I would hate to be a judge for that particular prize. But if I had to choose it would be a more prosaic example. Bridport House in Hackney. It wasn’t the first CLT residential block but it feels like the one that really grabbed the building sector’s attention. I am sure the point is arguable. However for me I heard very clearly articulated some of the wonderful ways in which this wooden solution fitted the bill for the client and contractor, for the subcontractors and for the residents in a way other material solutions simply could not. It was originally designed to be a concrete building, but had to be built in timber for very practical engineering reasons. On top of that it is storing and will continue to store, tonnes and tonnes of carbon.

Q: Any words of advice for the next TTF chief? Cherish the honour to lead an industry that is a significant element of the solution to one of the world’s most difficult problems – climate change. Be persistent in making the case for wood on that basis. Look after what is a fantastic team of highly qualified and dedicated individuals here at the TTF.

TIMBER TRENDS Issue 10 2014 Are MPs ‘losing focus on sustainability’? A survey of 100 MPs by Parliamentary research specialist Dods suggests that improving the sustainability of new houses has fallen off the political agenda in the race to meet the UK’s housing shortage. The MPs, from all political parties and UK regions, were asked to rank six considerations in order of importance for the UK’s new housing development programme: sustainability of materials, energy efficiency, availability of skilled labour for construction, speed of construction, cost of construction and quality and precision of the finished building. Cost came top, with 54% of respondents naming it as their first or second most important consideration.

SMTS Helps Deliver UK’s First Eco Town

Just 13% of MPs saw sustainability of building products and materials as one of their top two priorities, with more than half (57%) ranking it among their bottom two. Only just over a third (36%) placed energy efficiency among their top two concerns. The study found that 68% of Conservative respondents put cost of construction in their top two priorities, compared with only 46% of Labour MPs.

Stewart Milne Timber Systems (SMTS) has been awarded the design order to help create the UK’s first eco town, North West Bicester (NW Bicester) and is in final negotiations for the production and supply of the Sigma II timber frame on the first Exemplar phase.

The respondents were also canvassed on the benefits of building with timber. More than half (55%) agreed that timber buildings can be delivered faster and at lower cost than other materials, while 76% identified that its increased use would help

designed to achieve high standards of environmental sustainability. The first phase of the timber frame element is worth circa £1 million. Alex Goodfellow, Group Managing Director of Stewart Milne Timber Systems, said: “I’m extremely proud that Stewart Milne Timber Systems will play such an integral role in one of the most important housing developments in the UK today, and I’m looking forward to watching the project grow to become a huge success in the coming years.” The Exemplar phase of the scheme will provide 393 homes which meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5. As one of the country’s most sustainable communities, the homes at NW Bicester are designed to be ‘future proofed’ against climate change and rising temperatures. Aiding the energy efficiency is the type of wall being used to construct the homes, which is the Stewart Milne Timber Systems’ proprietary Sigma II build system, “195 C-Stud”, delivering excellent heat retention and airtightness, a 0.15 U-value and therefore providing greater energy efficiency. In addition the party walls and roof will be site-insulated and made airtight with membranes. This, along with pre-assembled roof modules and insulated floor cassette edges, means a pair of semi-detached homes can be weather tight, airtight, secure and fully insulated within 72 hours, providing a safe and efficient means to complete the homes on site. Alex Goodfellow, added: “NW Bicester is an inspiring project and we’re very excited to see the end result of The Exemplar first phase. It’s fantastic to be involved with such a forward-thinking model of modern living which fits so well with the Government’s vision of a sustainable future. The timing of the programme is extremely

CLT Performs Well Under Site Fire Conditions

A report commissioned by Finnish wood and paper producer Stora Enso Building & Living suggests Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structures can still retain their integrity even in construction site fires because of the material’s limited charring rate. A large wooden structure’s ability to meet fire protection requirements once it is complete has already been widely acknowledged within the industry. But how fireproof such structures are if a fire breaks out or is started when they are still being built has until now remained a matter of debate. Stora Enso wanted to show that CLT can withstand construction fires as well as any other construction material, providing enough time for site workers to escape to safety. It has commissioned an assessment from UK and Finland-based fire safety design consultancy Markku Kauriala which uses a fire dynamic simulator that was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the USA and

Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre along with several other international universities and companies. The report, which has not yet been fully released, is backed up by over 80 separate scientific references to other studies. Wayne Probert, UK Sales Manager for Stora Enso Building Solutions, said: “We decided to invest in this report in order to help specifiers understand the inherent properties that make CLT such a unique and valuable material for future construction developments. Simulation enables us to model the entire buildings in full scale and to evaluate multiple fire scenarios. We believe this research will prove invaluable to anyone wishing to build in CLT.” Mika Kallio, senior vice president at Stora Enso Building and Living, added: “The report provides scientific evidence underlining the significant difference under fire between traditional timber construction methods and massive wood such as CLT, especially during the construction process. The study also provides detailed technical information concerning fire safety of wooden multi-story buildings in general.”

Hotel Giant Commits to STA Whitbread, one of the UK’s largest hotel and restaurant operators, has announced its commitment to only use the products and services of Structural Timber Association (STA) members in its future timber-based projects. Principle contractors Willmott Dixon tasked NHE (N.H. Etheridge (Building) Ltd.) with supplying and installing the internal timber doorsets. NHE contracts director Steve Etheridge said: “Part of our scope of works included the supply and installation of internal timber door sets, and it soon became apparent that this element would be one of the most complicated and difficult to produce due to the integration and fully flush finish within the birch plywood wall panelling required by Hopkins Architects.”

Vicaima supplied a total of 46 fully finished, oversize Portaro door sets in various heights, the tallest being 2370mm for an entrance door to the auditorium, and to different widths – the maximum being 1130mm wide. With the range offering one of the greatest

New BRE Guidance on Structural Timber The BRE Trust has funded the production of a new publication that explores the key factors to be considered when specifying structural timber. Aimed at engineers, designers, architects, sawmillers and timber merchants in the wood processing industry, the guide provides useful information on the range and qualities of strength-graded timber in order for users to make safe decisions and calculations with regard to their designs. It also provides an overview of and links to more in-depth information contained in relevant British Standards, European Standards, Eurocode 5 and other documents. All timber to be used for structural applications in construction projects should be assessed for strength in order to be specified and fitted correctly. Joists that support ceilings, floors, roofs and rafters are integral to a building’s design and longevity, however, despite timber being one of the oldest structural materials, very few species used in industry have been fully assessed. The UK’s Largest Timber Building Opens

UKSIPS & STA Join Forces

The £19m four-storey William Perkin High School in Greenford, West London has officially opened. Built from 3,800m3 of cross laminated timber (CLT), it includes a 750-seat performance auditorium, sports hall and central atrium running the full height of the building. The above ground floors are 230mm-thick CLT and span 7.5m with a 2.5m cantilevering walkway. The CLT wall panels range from 95-208mm thick, decreasing to 95mm at the top floor as a means of saving both cost and weight. The building was designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, while the structural design was produced by engineering and design company Ramboll. The CLT was supplied by KLH UK Ltd. Gavin White, Ramboll Associate Structural Engineer, said the building was initially planned as a concrete frame building but the design changed to a timber superstructure because of the cost and time advantages. “Even with snow on the ground and delivery restrictions from the surrounding residential area, the majority of the CLT structure was assembled in only 19 weeks. This is because CLT can be put up in any weather or temperature, and with a much smaller and less intrusive delivery schedule than concrete. Internally the timber also forms a key design feature for the school – with both the sports hall and the building’s sunlit central atrium showcasing this bright, natural material.” Source: www.ttjonline.com

Leading timber industry membership organisations UKSIPS and the Structural Timber Association (STA) have joined forces, creating a stronger presence for their members within the sector. UKSIPS will join the STA and will be represented by a new STA working group for SIP technology and across the various existing STA committees. Peter Barr of SIPCO, and current vice-Chairman of UKSIPS, will be joining the STA main board to boost the representation of structural insulated panels within the management of the Association. Lawrence Young, chairman of the STA said: “I am pleased to be welcoming our colleagues from UKSIPS to the STA - something we have been discussing for some time now. They will bring technical expertise, quality standards and significant insights that will play a vital role in our ongoing services to the construction sector. This announcement is another step in the growth of the STA and its representation and I look forward to working with the new SIP members.”

Scotland Needs More Trees

News in Brief The Trussed Rafter Association has appointed a new Chairman. Richard Evans, Managing Director of Scotts Timber Engineering, was unanimously endorsed by Members at this year’s AGM. Speaking following his appointment, Richard said: “I am delighted to say that the timber industry has taken a very positive turn in the last 12 months and things are feeling more confident. Undoubtedly the Government’s ‘Help to Buy’ initiative has created increased demand for new homes and therefore construction has increased, in turn leading to the creation of new companies and jobs to fulfil this demand.”

According to a report on the BBC, Scotland’s forestry and timber industry is not planting enough trees to meet expected demand for wood in 50 to 100 years’ time. Industry body Confor said trees for commercial use could take up to 40 years to grow but that there had been a fall in planting since 1990. Public agency Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) said there were good levels of supply for the next 20 years. Confor said FCS’s 50-year and 100-year timber supply forecasts showed a shortage of 60 million cubic metres of timber and the shortfall was a threat to the future of more than 1,000 jobs. Stuart Goodall, chief executive of Confor, told BBC Scotland: “A lot of trees were planted in the 20th Century and then it stopped about 1990 and we’ve hardly planted anything since. What that creates is a time lag because trees take about 35 to 40 years to grow. We are going to see the effect of that from about the 2030s onwards.”

Confor said the Scottish government was committed to planting 148,263 acres (60,000 ha) of commercial forestry by 2022. However, the industry body said there should be a further commitment after that date to planting 14,826 acres (6,000 ha) every year until 2042. Cameron Maxwell, from FCS, said: “We have got good levels of supply coming for the next 20 years plus. It is a question of what to do beyond the 2040s when the increase we have seen starts to reduce and falls away. Accoya has been used to create a 2.5ft egg-shaped sculpture for the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt in New York.

The sculpture was created by dresser mouldings in Rochdale and the wood for the project was donated by distributors Abbey Woods and James Latham. The Accoya Egg was designed by London firm Zap Architecture. Pol Gallagher, Director of Zap Architecture, said: “Accoya was a great material to work with, and owing to its durability credentials, we’re confident that the egg will remain a beautiful piece of art for years to come.” The egg stands on a plinth made from Medite Tricoya.

Wood Campus has re-launched with a new look. The industry’s only online information and learning portal has re-launched with a new special section aimed at the DIY Sector. Wood Campus has enjoyed significant growth over the past 18 months from people looking for quick and easily-digestible information alongside the online learning courses. The new DIY sector joins the existing Builders, Merchants and Specifiers content.

The contractor behind the Wood Award-winning Bishop Edward King Chapel saw its pre-tax profits rise by 21% to £1.7m last year. Family-owned Beard was the main contractor on the timber chapel at Ripon College in Cuddesdon, which won the Gold Award at the Wood Awards and

was a runner-up in RIBA’s Stirling Prize. Managing director Mark Beard said: “Our success has been driven by a strong focus on prompt and faultless delivery of all our buildings projects, good cost control and being selective about the clients and projects we take on.“

GMT Timber Frames has completed a project to replace a drawbridge at the Tower of London. The project, which took a four-man team six weeks to complete, involved replacing the middle drawbridge at the historic landmark – an oak structure dating from 1915. The new drawbridge had to be heavy enough to take the weight of a fire engine as well as crowds of tourists. The raising section is to be used on special occasions and for teaching purposes. The project was delivered on time and to budget for English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces.

The Timber Trades’ Benevolent Society (TTBS) is in good health, according to National President Malcolm Cowley.

Speaking at its annual general meeting on May 15, he said: “The efforts of our investment management team, legacies, which raised £81,000 of income through the year and the fundraising efforts of our nine regional committees have all resulted in a very satisfactory year for the Society.” He added that payments to beneficiaries were £6,000 up on the previous year.

An innovative project to construct the world’s tallest timber building is underway in Norway. The fourteen-storey building in Bergen called Treet – meaning ‘tree’ in Norwegian – will reach heights of 49m when complete, taking the title of tallest timber structure from the existing record holder in Melbourne, Australia. Almost 900 m³ of timber will be used in the tower resulting in a CO2 saving of approximately 1,800 tonnes. Work started in April 2014, with the whole project due to be completed in autumn 2015.

The US government is to launch a competition for the design of high-rise timber buildings as part of a US$1m initiative to encourage the use of wood as a structural material. The government competition is to demonstrate the architectural and commercial viability of wood in tall buildings, similar to the nine-storey Stadthaus in London. The $1m US programme will be run by the Forest Service in partnership with the Wood Products Council’s WoodWorks initiative, to provide training for architects, engineers and builders related to the use of advanced wood materials in buildings.

Substituting concrete and steel for timber in construction could help to reduce global emissions by almost 31 per cent. Conducted by scientists from the University of Washington and Yale, the research shows the greater use of wood could also cut fossil fuel use by between 12 and 19%. At the moment, about 20 per cent of wood grown globally is harvested – around 3.4 billion cubic metres per year – and the team calculated that this should be increased to 34%. Professor Chadwick Oliver, lead author of the research, said: “Forests contain a lot of diversity. This harvested wood will save fossil fuel and CO2 and provide jobs.”

PROFILE: THE STRUCTURAL TIMBER ASSOCIATION (STA) Call on Quality The Structural Timber Association (STA) is surging ahead since its rebrand from the UKTFA and recently absorbed the membership of the UKSIP Association to form one of the strongest trade associations in the construction sector. Andrew Carpenter, chief executive of the Structural Timber Association, gives an update on the Association’s recent activities. With positive economic news continuing to emanate from the construction sector, the STA has been working tirelessly in recent months to ensure our members are best positioned to capitalise on the upturn. In April, we were delighted to announce that Whitbread, one of the UK’s largest hotel and restaurant operators, will now only use the products and services of STA members in its future timber-based projects. The company, which operates brands including Premier Inn and Costa Coffee, build and manage hundreds of properties across the UK, with timber playing a key part in the company’s approach. At the end of May, we held our first AGM since rebranding from the UK Timber Frame Association last September. The AGM saw a record turnout, as well as giving us the chance to welcome the membership of UKSIPS, which disbanded and whose members joined the STA at the start of April. By joining forces, we feel that we are creating a stronger voice

for our sector, by growing our influence and demonstrating the diversity our various technologies have within the construction industry as a whole. We were joined at the AGM by guest speaker Suzannah Nichol MBE of the National Specialist Contractors’ Council (NSCC), who highlighted the lack of payment terms within construction contracts and how this stymies industry growth and progress. This is an issue which the STA is tackling head-on, and as of 1 June, we have joined the NSCC and are asking members to consider adopting the principles of the Supply Chain Payment Charter. Peter Hansford, the Government’s Chief Construction Adviser, also joined us to give a keynote speech regarding the Construction 2025 strategy.

WOOD FOR GOOD Launches UK construction industry’s largest life-cycle assessment sector database The free-to-use database, which was unveiled at London’s Building Centre in April, has been designed to aid the specification of timber products in construction schemes. It contains environmental performance information on all major timber products from cradle to grave. Wood for Good has gathered data on every aspect of the life-cycle of timber products, from forestry, harvesting, transportation, processing and manufacturing, through to the various end of life options. The resource includes modern-engineered solutions such as cross-laminated timber (CLT). Using the data, built environment professionals will be able to make informed decisions about the materials they choose and model the impact this will have on the life-cycle performance of the buildings they design. A key initial finding from the database is that each of the products studied has a carbon negative rating on a cradle-to-site basis. This means that the amount of carbon absorbed and stored in the timber is greater than that emitted from harvesting, processing and transportation. “Timber products require very low energy inputs for production – relative to many mainstream building materials – and therefore have a low-embodied energy and carbon rating,” says David Hopkins, project director at Wood for Good. “Our conversations with specifiers have revealed that while most are already convinced of this, and the

many other benefits of wood, they often lack the empirical evidence to endorse its use with their clients.”

“Harnessing all of the environmental and design data that customers need in order to choose timber products in one convenient hub, will support the increased specification of timber. Our initial findings demonstrate that timber has enormous potential to help improve the environmental impact of the building industry. It absorbs carbon dioxide during the growth phase, stores this carbon throughout its life, requires very little energy to process and manufacture and can be used as a low-carbon fuel or a resource for further timber products at end of life. Through the launch of this resource, and its ongoing development, we aim to position timber as the first choice material for sustainable building.” The Lifecycle Database hub will incorporate both generic LCA datasets for the primary products developed during this project and existing manufacturer-specific datasets identified during a literature review, together with the related evidence base. Over time, it will also provide tools to allow manufacturers to produce their own Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). The environmental data provided for the primary timber products are intended to be used at the building or end-use-product level, allowing comparisons to be made between different options, taking account of the full life cycle. Data for products themselves can

only be compared where the full functionality through the life cycle has been considered. The results are the first to be published through Wood First Plus, a multi-stakeholder research and development initiative spearheaded by Wood for Good with funding and support from Scottish Enterprise, Forestry Commission Scotland, Timber Trade Federation and TRADA. Global sustainability consultancy PE INTERNATIONAL was appointed to oversee the collection and analysis of LCA data for the database and is continuing to work with Wood for Good on the research project. PE has worked with all major materials sectors in the construction industry and conducted a major LCA project on U.S. hardwood lumber for the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) in 2009. Future outputs include the publication of LCA studies at whole-building level across a range of building types, as well as the creation of a toolkit which will allow individual companies to generate their own Environmental Product Declarations.

The Four Dwellings Primary Academy in Birmingham is an award winning success story that has improved lives and results, by developing a school building which inspires educational success. From the unique oval design, clearly demonstrating the ﬂexibility of timber, to the approach of the construction project – Four Dwellings School is distinctive in many ways. In collaboration with architects dRMM and main contractor, Lend Lease – Frame Wise designed, manufactured and built the innovative timber frame structure for the school. By using offsite construction methods, a robust logistic plan could be developed to minimise both deliveries and on-site waste. Sustainability and innovation were central to the build process. Four Dwellings Primary School is a fantastic achievement not only from a sustainability, design and build perspective but more importantly, it has transformed lives and enhanced results.

Project Outcomes Developed under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) and Primary School Capitol Programme, Four Dwellings School was one of the largest projects delivered under this programme in the country. The timber frame and panels kept the site movements to a low level and helped the building achieve a B rating Energy Performance Certificate. The calculated C02 emission rate exceeds Part L 2006 regulations. The school was delivered on schedule, within budget and now brings all pupils and staff together into one outstanding educational facility, providing modern and efficient accommodation, significantly reducing running costs.

CASE STUDY: SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS SEE US AT STAND: B61

Learning Campus Featuring SAS Achieves Excellence

Phase two of the project included the demolition of William C Harvey and Broadwater Farm schools and the construction of the remaining areas including kitchens, offices, gym, music facilities and classrooms for years 3-6. To help meet the required BREEAM rating, the building incorporates a sophisticated building management system, including manually operated Hybrid Series 2 top opening vents within the Senior curtain wall system together with a high level of automated vent control.

An innovative £18million education facility has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating thanks, in part, to the use of Senior Architectural Systems’ ground-breaking hybrid curtain walling, door and window systems. Funded by Haringey Council as part of its Capital Funding Programme and believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, the 6,000sqm Broadwater Inclusive Learning Campus, designed by architects Gollifer Langston, amalgamates three schools including a mainstream primary school and two special needs schools, at Broadwater Farm in Tottenham. The two-storey school was programmed for delivery over three phases to enable the existing schools to remain open during the construction process. Fabricated

and installed by Cardiff-based Denval Co Ltd, the Senior Hybrid curtain wall system offers an aluminium external profile providing exceptional performance, longlife and low maintenance with contrasting engineered timber internally to provide an ideal combination of aesthetics, high insulation properties and strong environmental benefits. Powder coated externally in dust grey and internally in pine with a clear lacquer for added protection, Senior’s Hybrid composite timber and aluminium system incorporates double glazed units comprising a laminated pane and a toughened pane for security and safety of the children. The soft coat low-e units provide exceptional acoustic and thermal performance whilst reducing solar gain, achieving an overall U value of 1.5 W/2K.

Phase three of the project included the demolition of the remaining sections of the original buildings and the creation of extensive external play and community areas.

CASE STUDY: X-LAM ALLIANCE Furness Academy – the Design and Construction Journey

Furness Academy has been hailed as a ground-breaking project as one of the largest educational facilities to be developed in the UK using cross laminated timber (CLT), as the core structural component. Cumbria County Council had an urgent requirement for a new Academy - the final proposal was for an outstanding centre of learning, with the target of accommodating 1,200 pupils by the academic year 2013/14. Furness Academy aspired to be more than just a place of learning - at a social level it has been established as a hub for the local community and a beacon of change for the area.

Project Performance Site conditions proved far from ideal and the team experienced heavy rain, wind and snow throughout the 22 week frame construction period. This presented particular challenges for panel unloading, erection and associated plant movements. In total an astounding 1,988 white wood spruce CLT panels and 184 tonnes of steel were delivered, over the course of the 22 weeks, in 57 loads. The Academy has achieved outstanding environmental performance for the structural frame with sequestered carbon values of - 1395 tonnes of CO2.

Indoor ambient noise level measurements were taken in line with the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) Guidelines, Noise from Building Services for mechanical and mixed mode ventilated areas.

TTBS (TIMBER TRADES BENEVOLENT SOCIETY) Founded in 1897 the Society has changed with the times over the intervening years but still endeavours to provide assistance to those past and present members of the timber trade in need.
