nly a few weeks to go before Timber Expo 2013 opens its doors at the NEC, Birmingham. This issue is designed to whet your appetite and give you a real flavour of what to expect over the two days of the show. We have pulled out as many stops as we can to bring the best of timber from the UK and also from a dynamic group of international exhibitors. If you want to know everything about the latest timber products and how to deliver cutting edge, low carbon construction and sustainable design, then it is time to tune in to Timber Expo.

Timber Talks The Timber Talks programme will deliver two full days of major names, key topics and influential thinking on all aspects of timber.

The Timber Talks programme is virtually complete and from page 8 onwards you will be able to read more about the eight modules that have been organised by TRADA and who will be delivering this detailed programme. There is a lot of ground to cover and they have been designed to give attendees a clear route to a serious level of expertise. Speakers from heavyweights such as Arup, Architype, B&Q, Mace, Land Securities and Willmott Dixon will be on hand plus a range of stunning industry case studies. We have a range of new additions to this year’s show. One knockout feature is the placing of Worldscape from Atmos as part of our Visitor Lounge. Seminar Theatre 1 – the Fabric First Theatre

Built by leading timber frame specialists Frame Wise, the Fabric First theatre will extol the virtues of building with an airtight building envelope in mind and its superior thermal properties – making it ideal as the basis of a modern energy efficient building. Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum Sponsored by Vandecasteele, this co-located event within Timber Expo is a successful and dynamic part of the show, giving attendees the opportunity to meet for a face-to-face discussion with prospective new clients and business partners in a formal but relaxed environment. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! So as we move ever closer to Timber Expo 2013, it is tremendously exciting to feel the anticipation and interest for this year’s event. In recent weeks we have received unprecedented enquiries regarding the show, and everybody from exhibitors to visitors and also press seems to be building up to the inaugural holding of the event at the NEC in Birmingham.

What a difference a year makes! A slow but definite turnaround in the economy and the murmuring of a construction sector recovery… some confidence back in the market-place and a bright future for the timber sector – these are the vibes that I am getting when I talk to our exhibitors, sponsors, partners and speakers.

Visitor registrations are up by 18% when compared with the same period in 2012, proving the new central location ticks more boxes than the previous venue and also that our increased focus on FREE content this year is showing the right results. I really think this is going to be a great step forward for the show and a wonderful new home for years to come. To add to the excitement, we have so many facets and additions to this year’s event. Along with the exhibitors from our own British Isles there is a vast array of international exhibitors this year too - the Bolivian Pavilion has joined us for the first time providing a showcase for the companies that will demonstrate new and exciting product from Bolivia. In addition we have companies from Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Canada, America in the show, plus SCA from Sweden will be sponsoring and providing the build for the Media Centre, where I will be based during the show. We have the most wonderful treat for the visitors – Atmos, DHH Timber and The Cutting Room are sponsoring and providing the visitor lounge, an excellent

example of what can be achieved with Latvian white birch plywood, a really creative and stimulating piece. Add to all of this the three seminar theatres containing Timber Talks and Toolbox Talks (which are all free to attend) and we are set to deliver a well-rounded event. I really believe that the built environment sector needs a great event in which to showcase all the amazing and diverse facets within the world of timber. So let’s join together in getting right behind this year’s show and make it the best one yet! TRADA has worked hard to compile the seminar programme, drawing together an unrivalled collection of high calibre speakers from all four corners of the built environment covering everything from niche areas to leading trends. The content for this year’s Timber Talk Seminar Programme has been largely created from feedback from last year’s show and research amongst TRADA members concerning the topic and themes they most wanted to hear about. More than 200 people responded to the call for information, proving that there is definitely a great appetite for information about building with wood. Taking place over a morning or afternoon at this year’s Timber Expo, Timber Talks will be characterised by key industry topics, major names, super projects and big issues. The subjects are designed to appeal to all, but particularly clients, contractors, architects and engineers, on whom the timber construction industry relies. Over two days, 50 presentations will be delivered in eight core streams that will be case study-based to offer real life examples on how and why timber is performing so well across a wide range of sectors and applications. The hour-long themed sessions, which will be delivered in two purpose-built timber-based theatres

will cover topics such as engineered wood, innovation in timber and its use, while speakers will be drawn from the best industry insiders and those working with timber including architects. Sophie Churchill (OBE, FICDor), National Forest Company Sophie Churchill has led the National Forest Company since 2006. It is one of the country’s most ambitious landscape-scale afforestation projects. Established to help the recovery of the area from the effects of mining, it now includes a diverse range of woodlands, other habitats and forest-related activities, commercial and social. She will shortly become Vice President the Royal Forestry Society and is Chair of Tree Aid. Sophie was also awarded an OBE for services to the environment. In 2012 became an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters. Steve Cook, Willmott Dixon Re-Thinking Steve provides technical and practical support on materials, carbon, waste and sustainable procurement to all divisions within the Group. He has 23 years’ experience in the construction industry; is a fully-apprenticed City & Guilds carpenter and also has a BSc (Hons) in building processes from Brunel University.

Meredith Bowles, Mole Architects Trained as an architect at Sheffield University, The Royal College of Art and the Architectural Association in London, Meredith established Mole Architects in 1997. He has taught Architecture and has lectured widely on sustainable design. He is the past Chairman of the Cambridge Association of Architects and member of the RIBA regional council and RIBA

Atmos is a multidisciplinary art, architecture and design practice that works across scales and media, from small-scale product-design to largescale masterplans. X-LAM Launch Revolutionary Online Specifier Solution at Timber Expo At the ProTimber Summit in September 2012, keynote speaker, Peter Caplehorn, technical director of Scott Brownrigg Architects, outlined the issues faced by professionals when specifying engineered timber. In his address Peter Caplehorn suggested that although engineered timber solutions are often the preferred option, but due to the lack of technical performance data - steel or concrete is specified in its place, with information being readily available in such documents as the National Structural Steelwork Specification Guide. In response to market demand and spurred on by the ProTimber Summit feedback, the X-LAM Alliance has developed a revolutionary interactive online system to advise professionals on how to meet building physics performance for thermal, acoustic and fire requirements when specifying cross laminated timber (CLT). The CLT Construction Specifier is performance parameter based â&#x20AC;&#x201C; requiring the user to define a measured level of performance and the system will automatically present a range of compliant and accredited details to meet the specification. Developed by a large team of architects and engineers, this innovative online technical guide has detailed drawings and comprehensive information on more than 130 cross laminated timber systems and build-up solutions for ceilings, roofs and walls, including exterior, internal and partitioning walls. This ground-breaking online solution is effectively a digital search specification tool for cross laminated timber, which ensures professionals, can have the required technical performance characteristics and solutions at the push of a button.

The UK and Ireland timber fencing and landscaping markets have been looking for more focused and effective incising technologies for ground contact timbers prior to high pressure preservative treatment that would deliver a range of improvements.

At Timber Expo 2013, Frame Wise will launch the next generation of structural timber panel systems -Wise Wall L. Specifically designed for low and medium rise developments, this new innovative system will transform the offsite construction industry. Wise Wall L is a fully certified building system, designed for education, leisure and commercial buildings, as well as housing and extensions. The system can be tailored to meet the requirements of projects large and small from Frame Wise’s own manufacturing facilities. Case study of the award winning, Four Dwellings School, Quinton, Birmingham Frame Wise was delighted to be part of the team responsible for the construction of the award winning Four Dwellings Primary School in Birmingham. Working with Architects dRMM and main contractor, Lend Lease - Frame Wise designed, manufactured and built the innovative timber frame structure for the school. Developed under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) and Primary School Capitol Programme, Four Dwellings School was one of the largest projects delivered under the BSF programme in the country.

PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) Meeting EUTR Requirements with PEFC PEFC Chain of Custody certification enables companies to demonstrate compliance with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) requirements. For PEFC-certified companies, compliance with EUTR is straightforward: the 2013 PEFC Chain of Custody standard with its integral PEFC Due Diligence System (PEFC DDS) is fully aligned with the Regulation. PEFC Chain of Custody certification therefore provides an efficient tool to demonstrate compliance with EUTR requirements along the supply chain and is a viable option for currently uncertified companies, whether or not they are already subject to the Regulation, but wish to prepare for future business opportunities with EU-based customers.

The right form of underfloor heating is particularly well-suited for use in timber buildings. It is the most comfortable form of heating, it is completely unobtrusive – enabling full use of internal room space – and it is safer and more hygienic than other forms of heating. Timber is not a good thermal conductor and consequently some types of timber-floor underfloor heating are dreadfully inefficient and can even damage a structure. However, there are other very good, energy-efficient forms which also work well in association with sources of renewable energy. This presentation teaches which is which.

Timber Expo is marking a milestone for the UKTFA this year, as it signals the launch of the Structural Timber Association. Chief Executive Andrew Carpenter explains...

As of 24 September, the UKTFA will be officially changing to the Structural Timber Association (STA), encompassing users of all structural timber systems and its elements and components. The timber industry is going through an evolution; it is no longer defined simply by the supply of timber kits, it is driven by intelligent and integrated hybrid solutions. Because of this, the UKTFA now stands for much more than ‘timber frame’, and we felt that we needed to broaden the Association to reflect the evolving industry. The overall purpose of the organisation will continue to be the promotion of structural timber products and systems within the UK construction industry – something the UKTFA has done for eleven years to good effect. With the growing understanding that timber construction is the way forward in terms of energy efficiency, time saving and flexibility, the new STA will reiterate these messages and continue all the good work of the UKTFA through its programme of seminars, factory tours and research. This change has the support of the UK construction market, and we will continue to collaborate with the other timber related organisations like TRADA, TTF,

Hoppings Softwood Products supplied Q-Grip heavy-duty anti-slip decking for an essential aspect of The London 2012 Olympic Games site at Stratford – decking for use on three of the footbridges (one, which crossed the River Lee and connected the north and south areas, was the longest bridge onsite, at over 50m) and two underpasses. The bridges and underpasses were essential to fulfil three remits, firstly they had to allow works access during creation of the infrastructure, then be suitable for access by the athletes and crowds during the Games, and finally to be re-useable in the community Legacy phase afterwards. Being able to remove and recycle the decking without causing any environmental or structural damage was an important aspect of the brief from CLM, the consortium responsible for delivery of the Games. Also key to the brief was sustainability and the concept of flexibility – while several of the bridges were to be

permanent, they were to have temporary decking installed alongside to increase the bridge width during August 2012, but this was to be removed and reused in other guises after the event. With its manufacture from strength-graded, FSC/PEFC-certified softwood from sustainable sources, coupled with the easily removable and recyclable features, ensured Q-Grip decking fulfilled the key elements of the original design.

Timber and UK construction strategy 2025 At the heart of Timber Expo, a wide range of timber industry leaders will take part in the second annual ProTimber industry summit. This year discussions will focus on the opportunities ahead for the timber sector in developing a clear and defined response to the UK Governments Construction Strategy 2025. The Summit will be boosted by crosstimber industry trade association support from BWF, CONFOR, TDCA, TIMCON, TRADA, TTF, UKSIPS, UKTFA, Wood for Good, WPA and WPIF under the framework of the Timber Industry Accord that was signed 18 months ago. Guests representing architects, clients, contractors, engineers and sustainability consultants will attend the ProTimber Summit in order to ensure that the users and specifiers of timber technology have a chance to listen to the industry but more importantly, to have input and influence the discussion. The outcomes from the Summit will provide the basis for the industry to exploit its strengths in the recovering construction economy. Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the UK Timber Frame Association said: “I have long been an advocate of collaboration and shared thinking. It is important for our industry to work together more closely in order to exploit the synergies that we know exist at all levels of the supply-chain.

The term ‘collaborative working’ epitomises what the ProTimber Summit is all about, our industry coming together for the common good and trying to map out clearly how we can operate in a more integrated manner.” Under the headline banner of ‘one vision one voice’ the Summit will see the discussion centre on the UK Governments Construction Strategy 2025, with particular focus on the Strategic Priorities aspect of the Strategy, detailed in Chapter 2. This element of the Strategy states that: ‘for construction to be at the heart of our future low carbon, resource efficient, modern and globally competitive economy, we need to address three strategic priorities which underpin sustained growth across the economy and an improved quality of life for citizens’. The Strategy also acknowledges that success within these areas depends on having a skilled, motivated and diverse workforce. The ProTimber Summit will be tailored around these three key strategic priorities and with the help of a professional facilitator, an invited panel and audience discussion, examine how the timber industry can respond positively and cohesively to these issues. The Summit will aim to identify and agree what steps those working within the timber industry can take to reinforce and grow its position as the leading renewable material within the construction market by capitalising on a well-defined response to the Governments ‘call to action’. In preparing for the ProTimber Summit the Timber Industry Accord acknowledges that the industry is moving quickly towards a digital economy, with profound implications for our built environment. The UK timber industry must act now to ensure it is at the vanguard of smart construction and digital design.

• The need for a more cohesive and collaborative approach across the timber sector to promote timber’s strengths to a wider client and consumer audience, providing comprehensive information on product data, material supply, costs and carbon sequestration in a definitive, easily understood and accessible way. “The 2012 ProTimber Summit event put its finger on a number of key points, provided plenty of facts and opinions and proved an excellent format for engaging with everyone involved,” said TRADA’s Rupert Scott. “With the framework of the Governments Construction Strategy 2025 at the heart of the 2013 Summit we look forward to raising the level of debate and generating new ideas to contribute to the future strategy of the Timber Industry Accord over the next 12 months and tackle some of the amazing opportunities timber is creating.”

The transition to a low carbon economy has long presented the timber industry with terrific opportunities for growth – with timber being acknowledged as the most sustainable construction material. There are also opportunities through greater resource efficiency and from adaptation of the built environment to deal with climate change. These opportunities reach every part of the construction supply chain and there is significant potential to exploit markets using sustainable sources of materials and ‘fabric first’ construction principles. The global construction market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4.3% until 2025 with substantial growth opportunities in emerging markets. Transforming the UK construction industry and the supply chain that it is based on opens up significant opportunities for global trade, which the timber industry already exploits very well. The 2012 ProTimber Summit threw up some interesting, if not unexpected, findings that pre-empted many of the recommendations made in the Government’s Construction Strategy 2025.

ONE VISION ONE VOICE ProTimber 2013 takes place during Timber Expo on 24 September at the NEC - Birmingham. The event is ‘invitation only’ but the organisers have reserved 20 places within the 160 seat capacity theatre for non-invitees who would like to participate and feel that they can contribute to the debate.

In this issue, we hear from Stephen King, Commercial Director at SCA Timber Supply. He has also become President of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) at a time when many specifiers are looking well beyond timber Chain of Custody certification to quantify environmental benefits. “The timber sector is working hard to match other building materials by establishing wider sustainability credentials,” says Stephen. SCA Timber Supply, part of the world-renowned ethical and sustainability champion the SCA Group of Sweden, has already calculated the carbon footprint of its pine and spruce products. The calculations extend all the way from its tree nursery in Sweden, which grows over 100 million new tree seedlings a year, through its own forests, harvesting, processing mills and shipping to its three UK locations in Hull, Stoke-on-Trent and Welshpool. SCA was also the first forest owner to sign up to WRAP’s Halving Waste to Landfill construction sector commitment. “Timber is too valuable to be wasted. It’s most effective in the carbon cycle when it’s used to lock away CO2 in the wood fibre used

in buildings. It’s this longterm benefit of utilising timber in buildings that the Timber Trade Federation continues to promote.” Managed under the TTF’s auspices, the Wood First Plus! project is bringing together three data streams: carbon, life cycle analysis, and engineering, aligning timber’s usage information and sustainability credentials with the needs of Building Information Modelling systems. “The TTF is fast-forwarding timber into the digital age,” says Stephen. “Specifiers need information at their finger-tips to make the best material choices, not just in operational cost terms, but for overall sustainability outcomes.” The project’s core funding and the main operational team come from Scottish Enterprise, Wood for Good, the Timber Trade Federation, Forestry Commission Scotland and TRADA.

The UK timber industry is worth roughly £10 billion a year – bigger than cement, concrete and a lot of other materials – and plays a vital role in our economy. This Accord will help us to act as one and show the importance of our sector to the UK economic recovery and low-carbon development.”

British Timber in Construction Adapt Centre for the Built Environment The UEA Enterprise Centre will house the Centre for the Built Environment in July 2014. Underway now the build aims for Passivhaus certification and BREEAM Outstanding. It will use natural materials from local supply chains, including timber from Thetford Forest in the form of Brettstapel panels, glulam beams and Larsen trusses with new supply chains being forged. Coed y Brenin visitor centre extension Panels made of Welsh wood at a factory in Bala were lifted into place at a groundbreaking building development – raising the prospect of a multi-million pound boost to local sawmills and the timber frame construction industry.

Sustainable Woodland and Forest Projects Tree surgeons create a sustainable office The Frankland Tree Services Ltd office building is constructed using reclaimed Cheshire brick, reclaimed Welsh slate (traditional materials for the area) and local timber. There are nineteen varieties of timber in the fabric of the building and a further ten or so in furniture and temporary art pieces. None of this timber has been grown for timber or felled for timber. It all comes from the arisings of local arboricultural activities – felled trees from the urban environment. Living willow bridge How do you stop a timber footbridge from decaying? Well, at Cow Hollow they have planted a bridge! The plans for a Living Willow Bridge are now reality after much thinking and doing. Using coppiced willow from the surrounding plantation they have woven a willow arch and deck that has been planted into the ditch bank. The Woodland Trust has sponsored the project. Smith and Wallwork and Cambridge University were jointly responsible for the design and installation. Construction began in November 2012 and the main arch and deck were completed in December 2012, a total of some 175 hours of volunteer work were spent on site. The bridge uses white willow and osier, there is no concrete, metal or plastic to be seen just what was sourced from the plantation.

A shortlist of just 30 has been selected from a record entry of 318 British projects in this year’s Awards.

The independent judging panel of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship and design experts and specialists led by Michael Morrison of Purcell UK and Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture are visiting the shortlisted projects in person before making their final decisions. The winners of the Wood Awards categories and which project will receive the coveted Gold Award – the winner of winners – will be announced on the 19th November at a reception hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters. The shortlisted projects range from Wilkinson Eyre Architect’s Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth featuring Canadian western red cedar to Atmos Studio’s undulating RoominaRoom in London, using birch plywood, European oak and American black walnut, and in the Furniture categories, Angus Ross’s deconstructed Tay Bench in Scottish and European oak is shortlisted alongside a second Atmos Studio project, 16 metres of continuous integrated landscape furniture in Latvian birch plywood with seating for 80 people. Michael Morrison said: “The diversity of this year’s entries demonstrate the range of flexibility and problem solving which timber brings. Each applicant was given a one hour slot to present additional information to their main entry and to explain their innovations in more detail. They were subjected to some rigorous questioning and encouraged to drill down in to the detail of why their product or solution should be the winning candidate.

INNOVATION AWARDS

The TTJ Innovation Awards, sponsored by Timber Expo and TRADA, were a keenly contested affair this year. So much so that judging panel – Mike Jeffree, Editor of TTJ Magazine, Rupert Scott, Membership and Marketing Manager of TRADA, Darren Richards, Managing Director of Timber Expo and Lewis Taylor, Timber Consultant of BM TRADA, decided that the shortlist of five companies could not be split on paper, so they invited the applicants in for a second bite of the cherry at TRADA HQ. “It is great to see the standard of entry so high in 2013, said Rupert Scott. “It reflects a level of confidence that is returning to the timber sector as people once again make investments in research and development activities. Even with the presentations delivered it has been incredibly tough for the judges to pick an outright front-runner but we look forward to presenting the Award at the TTJ Awards on the 12 September in London, as we know that we have a deserved winner.” The range of shortlisted applicants was very broad in terms of technology – from innovative mainstream timber frame technology to conceptual ‘expandable surface’ technology and likewise in terms of geography, with three of the shortlisted technologies being from overseas.

Expandable Surface System – presented by Pablo Zamorano, based on work undertaken with partners Jacob Bek and Nacho Marti. Expandable Surface System seamlessly links material properties, geometry and structure in a morphogenetic bottom-up process using 6.5mm birch plywood sheets. The result is a lightweight and inexpensive modular method of double-curving plywood sheets that minimises material use and waste without the need for expensive moulds, formwork or secondary structure.

Wise Wall T – presented by Simon Orrells, Managing Director of Frame Wise. Wise Wall T is the latest addition to the Frame Wise portfolio of ‘next generation’ closed panel systems. Designed to narrow the performance gap between theoretical insulation values, thermal bridging parameters and airtightness performance with actual onsite delivered performance the system creates a new benchmark in cost-effective fabric first solutions using ‘breathing wall’ technology.

Hess Limitless – presented by Marcus Golinski, International Business Manager, Hess Timber. Hess Limitless is an innovative patented combination of finger jointing with scarf jointing that enables the fabrication of long-span glulam beams onsite using shorter beam segments. The system addresses the constraints of transportation and logistics whilst maintaining the strength and technical performance characteristics of continuous long-span beams.

Vapourblock – presented remotely by Dieter Penninck, Sales Manager, Spanotech. Vapourblock is a pre-applied vapour control layer that is industrially applied within the production of wood based panels and guarantees a constant vapour resistivity. Vapourblock is specifically designed to provide a more reliable air-tightness and vapour control layer when compared to conventional plywood and OSB, guaranteeing a constant µ-value over the whole surface of the board.

CLT Goes Bigger in the UK Plans have been drawn up for the tallest cross-laminated timber (CLT) building in Europe, close to the award winning Bridport House and Murray Grove Tower in Hackney. Architects Hawkins\Brown and Regal Homes have received planning permission from the London Borough of Hackney for a new 6,750m2 mixed-use development on Wenlock Road, which will be called Banyan Wharf. It consists of 10 storeys, comprising 4,650m2 residential units and 1,190m2 commercial units located at street level. That beats both Bridport and Murray Grove by a storey. The contract is worth ÂŁ10M. The main carcass of the building will be constructed of CLT manufactured offsite. It is believed a supplier has been chosen although not named publicly. The CLT elevations will be clad in slatted larch with a dark brick screen forming the edge of the conservation area. Not only will the building be the tallest CLT residential structure in Europe, it will match the world record holder, the Forte Tower in Melbourne, Australia - although there are reports that a still taller building is now planned on the Continent. The project is for a unique cruciform plan, staggered on each level to allow all 50 residential units to benefit from at least two, if not three aspects. The construction schedule has not yet been disclosed, but Bridport House demonstrated the speed of construction using CLT in that the main structure was put up in 10 weeks.

BBC Put Illegal Logging Under the Spotlight The EUTR was under scrutiny recently in a BBC Panorama investigation – Jungle Outlaws: The Chainsaw Trail. The programme investigated illegal logging in the rainforest and the timber trail from Africa to West Europe. Reporter Raphael Rowe spent six months tracking logs from Congo's jungle, and discovered that new timber regulations are failing to stop some illegally-felled wood getting into European stores and on to the consumer. The Timber Trade Federation welcomed the programme focusing on the trade in illegal timber. John White, Chief Executive of the Timber Trade Federation said: “We applaud the programme makers for highlighting the damage and destruction that illegal, irresponsible, unsustainable logging practices can cause. We’ve worked with the BBC to be as open and transparent about our industry as possible and welcome these investigations. “However, the danger with programmes of this nature is that the responsible, certified, legal and sustainable firms operating in tropical areas to strict Western business standards also get tarred with the same brush. They will then retreat and pull their investment from these regions, leaving only these ‘jungle outlaws’ behind. We must remember that the timber industry has an active role to play in the sustainable management of tropical forests. It encourages replanting, maintains healthy biodiversity and provides sustainable income and investment for local people. “The programme demonstrates that there can be dangers involved in doing business with high-risk, developing nations which do not have the staff or governance frameworks in place to actively police international law. In the absence of these factors, the industry needs its own robust monitoring and third-party verified measures in place to ensure best practice. It highlights the need for all consumers to be aware of the origin of the products they are buying, and for active, engaging due diligence to be conducted, never accepting any products simply on good faith. “This is exactly what the EUTR is intended to achieve. However, Panorama also makes clear that the EUTR needs consistent, high-levels of enforcement throughout the EU. It would appear that this is not happening. We will be raising the names mentioned in this programme with trade bodies in other member states and at EU level.” The UK has been consistently rated as the best performing country in the WWF Government Barometer, an annual measure of EU nations and their actions to avoid illegal material entering the supply chain. BWF Announces New President and Council Woodworking and joinery manufacturing firms that are part of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) will receive increased benefits and opportunities to participate in industry development, as part of plans announced by its new President David Pattenden. David Pattenden has already made his mark on BWF strategy, particularly for his involvement in BWF Members Day 2013. This year’s event was the biggest yet and focused on helping joinery businesses ‘shape up for the future’, including masterclasses and keynote speakers offering advice and support to BWF members on a wide range of critical legislative, technical and operational issues. David was instrumental in the decision to make a free place available to all members this year for the first time. “Making this day free to members was very important to me,” said David. “There should be no barrier for members to get involved and benefit fully from the great work BWF does. Engagement with members is the theme of my presidency. Homegrown Scottish Timber for Salvation Army BSW Timber has provided homegrown Scottish timber for a unique partnership project for a Salvation Army Lifehouse in Edinburgh. The ‘Sitooterie’ in the gardens of the Ashbrook Lifehouse in the city’s Trinity area is a striking wooden outdoor structure, giving residents protection from the elements whilst also providing an attractive and eye-catching addition to the garden’s tree-lined setting. BSW Timber worked closely with design and build specialists Tog Studio to provide treated Scottish easi-edge™ C16 timber and Timeless Timber Brushwood cladding for the bespoke structure. The Sitooterie frames were prefabricated in Glasgow at the MAKLab before being assembled during a weekend working closely with the Lifehouse residents. The project was masterminded by Richard Campbell, structural engineer, co-founder and director of Tog Studio. He said: “This has been a wonderfully collaborative project bringing together a range of partners to create an instant and striking impact for the Salvation Army Lifehouse. Tog Studio’s

ethos is on teaching practical building skills and collaborative teamwork for real projects in beautiful locations, and the Sitooterie project was a perfect example of how innovative partnerships can produce stunning results. It will take on the patina of 730 daily tides below the water line, and 365 days of weathering by wind, rain and bleaching by the sun above. The Exbury Egg, a project by SPUD Group and PAD Studio, features a western red cedar exterior and an interior skin of reclaimed wood, manufactured by boat builder Paul Baker. The Egg adopts the two key premises of ‘Lean, Green and Clean’ and ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. The potential energy requirements during occupation were determined through exploring Stephen’s anticipated daily routines, including a consideration of the variations that would result from seasonal differences. Totton delivered the western red cedar, with its supplier Lathams being a sponsor at the launch event. Other timber sector sponsors include Howdens Joinery, SJG Carpentry and KJ Kilford Carpentry Contractors Ltd. “James Latham is delighted to be sponsoring the project because it’s involving schools, is deeply environmental and demonstrating a fascinating use of timber,” said Paul Latham, a director at Lathams. Housing Growth Will Drive Construction Recovery The latest forecasts from the Construction Products Association anticipate construction output growth of 2.2% in 2014 and 4.5% in 2015. The recovery will be led primarily by private housing in the short-term, with infrastructure activity expected to further boost activity in the medium-term. This is in addition to the results of the latest Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) which reported that housebuilding had been increasing at its fastest pace since June 2010, a solid increase in construction employment levels and ‘the

strongest degree of positive sentiment about future output since May 2010’. The survey indicated an increase in all areas of construction in July, with housebuilding leading the way. The CPA urged some caution, given the low starting point. Earlier this year the industry had seen its lowest levels since 2001 and even with growth in the second half of this year, output was likely to fall 1.5% for 2013. The Association noted several key risks to construction, most notably the dependency of the housing recovery on

both a wider economic recovery and government support. However, the CPA forecast is for construction to recover from 2014 with Growth over the next 12-18 months on account of a surge in housing sector activity, which is beginning to benefit from the Help to Buy scheme which underwrites the deposits of homebuyers, as a key reason for a rise in demand for new homes, in addition to the Bank of England's Funding for Lending scheme.

A proposed 34-storey tower in Stockholm that will be an ‘ultra-modern residential high-rise building’ is being designed by Berg | C.F. Møller Architects and Dinell Johansson and is set to be a flagship for CLT. HSB Stockholm – Sweden's largest housing association turns 100 years old in 2023 – and by then an innovative and sustainable apartment building will have been completed in Stockholm. Three groups of architects are currently in the process of preparing competition proposals for the spectacular building which will be situated at one of three plots. For the Västerbroplan plot in the Marieberg district, Berg | C.F. Møller has drawn up plans for a 34-floor wooden apartment building. The building is designed around a CLT structure with stabilising concrete cores and will act as a new characteristic landmark and meeting place in the city. Pillars and beams will be constructed using solid wood and inside the apartments all windows, ceilings and window frames will be made from timber, allowing the material to also be visible from the outside through the large windows. Both social and environmental sustainability have been considered as part of this project: each apartment will be equipped with an energy-efficient glass-fronted balcony and the building will receive energy from solar panels situated on the roof. The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) is the only qualifying body for professionals working and studying in the field of Architectural Technology and is internationally recognised. The Institute has its own Royal Charter and under this Charter the objects are:

As a membership based organisation, CIAT is owned by and operated on behalf of its members with a growing network of members who are based around the globe.

â&#x20AC;˘ to promote, for the benefit of society, the science and practice of Architectural Technology; â&#x20AC;˘ to facilitate the development and integration of technology into architecture and the wider construction industry to continually improve standards of service for the benefit of industry and of society; â&#x20AC;˘ to uphold and advance the standards of education, competence, practice and conduct of members of the Institute thereby promoting the interests, standing and recognition of Chartered Members within the industry and the wider society. Chartered Architectural Technologist is a protected title and can only be awarded by CIAT. Chartered Members of the Institute may use the designation MCIAT and the title of Chartered Architectural Technologist. The Chartered qualification demonstrates equality with fellow professionals in the built environment such as architects and surveyors and is recognised by organisations ranging from banks through to government offices and other major clients. The Chartered status allows Members to set up their own practice and provide a full architectural design and contract administration service to the public, as the lead consultant. As such CIAT has a Code of Conduct which all members must comply with. In particular Chartered Members who set up their own practice must register with CIAT and in addition it is a mandatory requirement to hold professional indemnity insurance if providing a service directly to clients.

In support of practising Members, CIAT produces a range of documents and information notes and works with sister Institutes in providing additional services. CIAT works closely with universities in the UK and in other countries and Accredits and Recognises undergraduate degree and postgraduate degrees in Architectural Technology as providing the necessary underpinning knowledge to allow graduates to progress to Chartered Membership. CIAT Accredited Honours degree programmes must also comply with the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Benchmark Statement for Architectural Technology. As a membership based organisation, CIAT is owned by and operated on behalf of its members with a growing network of members who are based around the globe. Registration & Entry to the Show Timber Expo is FREE to attend but to save you time on arrival and make entry into the show as smooth and stress-free as possible we encourage everyone to pre-register online at: www.timber-expo.co.uk/book. Badges are not posted out before the show and are to be collected by visitors at the registration desks which will be situated at the entrance to Hall 8. Electronic joining instructions and a Unique Registration Number (URN) will be emailed to pre-registered visitors before the show. Printing of badges will be easy and simple by scanning of a barcode or entering the URN provided. Badge holders and lanyards will be provided once your badge has been printed.

Visitor Guide To ensure that all visitors know what is happening during the show we produce a Visitor Guide for collection at the registration desks and entrance to the show. Visitor Guides are free and contain details on all elements of the show including; the full Timber Talks programme, Toolbox Talks programme, Exhibitor list and Floorplan.
