The Timber Talks will take place inside two seminar theatres that showcase the exceptional versatility and low carbon benefits that timber offers. FABRIC FIRST SEMINAR THEATRE Optimising low energy performance One of the key focal points at this year’s Timber Expo will be the Fabric First Seminar theatre – designed and built by Frame Wise to showcase the evolution of engineered timber solutions. The latest timber technology will be integrated into the construction and the Theatre will be divided to showcase advanced internal finishes together with cutting-edge external cladding highlighting the optimum fabric solutions. A full range of innovative panel systems will be on show, including the ‘Wise Wall’ closed panel series. The structure of the Wise Wall 'T' panel incorporates a 'breathable wall' which negates condensation build up within the structure giving the Wise Wall panel solutions an assured performance – from conception to completion. The discussion around sustainability once centred on renewable technologies, now the well-established, Fabric First approach has heightened awareness of the benefits of applying such building principles and as a result, the market demand for innovative products which deliver superior thermal and airtightness properties has dramatically increased. The shift towards Fabric First principles was foreseen by the senior management team at Frame Wise. By developing the products used and the construction methods employed, Frame Wise found it possible to achieve what many have wrongly regarded as the holy grail of sustainable construction - namely to significantly reduced thermal conductivity with relatively minor changes to construction methods at little or no extra build cost. For Managing Director Simon Orrells, the event has particular significance this year: “As a great advocate of the Fabric First approach, it is fitting that Frame Wise has been invited to build the Fabric First seminar theatre. We have built our reputation on pioneering timber frame as a construction method and have continually developed our services to reflect the changing needs of the market. In this issue, we hear from Stephen King, Commercial Director at SCA Timber Supply. He has also become President of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) at a time when many specifiers are looking well beyond timber Chain of Custody certification to quantify environmental benefits. “The timber sector is working hard to match other building materials by establishing wider sustainability credentials,” says Stephen. SCA Timber Supply, part of the world-renowned ethical and sustainability champion the SCA Group of Sweden, has already calculated the carbon footprint of its pine and spruce products. The calculations extend all the way from its tree nursery in Sweden, which grows over 100 million new tree seedlings a year, through its own forests, harvesting, processing mills

and shipping to its three UK locations in Hull, Stoke-on-Trent and Welshpool. SCA was also the first forest owner to sign up to WRAP’s Halving Waste to Landfill construction sector commitment. “Timber is too valuable to be wasted. It’s most effective in the carbon cycle when it’s used to lock away CO2 in the wood fibre used in buildings. It’s this longterm benefit of utilising timber in buildings that the Timber Trade Federation continues to promote.”

Managed under the TTF’s auspices, the Wood First Plus! project is bringing together three data streams: carbon, life cycle analysis, and engineering, aligning timber’s usage information and sustainability credentials with the needs of Building Information Modelling systems. “The TTF is fast-forwarding timber into the digital age,” says Stephen. “Specifiers need information at their finger-tips to make the best material choices, not just in operational cost terms, but for overall sustainability outcomes.” The project’s core funding and the main operational team come from Scottish Enterprise, Wood for Good, the Timber Trade Federation, Forestry Commission Scotland and TRADA. “We have a lot to learn, even from colleagues within our own corporate group at SCA,” admits Stephen. “Other parts of the SCA Group have been leading on life

The form and section of the building is carefully designed to reduce energy consumption by maximising natural daylighting and passive ventilation and carefully controlling solar gain. Particular attention was given to reducing thermal bridging in the construction and to achieving excellent airtightness which is required to achieve Passivhaus.

CASE STUDY 2 CLT & Healthcare

This is the first use of solid laminated timber in a tertiary healthcare environment. The project, funded as a 50/50 partnership by the NHS and the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Forever Friends fundraisers, has resulted in a dramatically different and improved environment in which the hospital can care for the 500 premature and sick babies that it looks after each year. The design process involved extensive consultation with staff, external specialists in neonatal care and parents. Client:

The NICU is constructed from CLT panels. These form a breathable wall construction with wood fibre insulation and timber cladding. Timber was selected as a quick, clean, quiet form of construction, appropriate to the acute healthcare environment, and the proximity to the existing delivery suite which remained operational throughout construction. Timber was selected for its low embodied energy and excellent air-tightness, particularly in this fully conditioned environment. Exposed timber internally creates a sense of calm, which with the excellent quality of daylight, helps reduce stress and raise spirits for the parents and staff.

The team were adamant that the new NICU should not be a one-off showcase for sustainability, but should serve as a template and catalyst for sustainable healthcare design by challenging existing standards and defining new targets in the health sector. Emmanuel College Library, Cambridge The new extension and refurbishment of Emmanuel College Library, Cambridge is a project of considerable subtlety and complexity, with timber used as structure, cladding and internal joinery. It improves access to all parts of the library, provides additional reader spaces, including individual reading carrels, book storage space and new offices.

The brief stipulated that the architect should work with the existing library building and extensions. The timber skin extends around Cruickshank & Seward’s staircase tower and unfolds along the south-east facade of the Stokes building to create valuable new spaces within. Timber is used for structure, cladding and interior fitting, chosen as the most suitable material for its light weight, low embodied energy and recyclability, its local provenance, good insulation properties and appearance. The perimeter brick walls to the Cruikshank & Seward 1970s building were removed and the existing reinforced concrete floor areas extended with the addition of timber framed ‘pods’ projecting around the perimeter at the three upper levels of the building. The pods are supported on a steel structure of columns and beams: the beams run at the base of the pods at first floor level and transfer the load to columns which run at the external perimeter of the ground floor. After extensive ‘buildability’ discussions with the contractor, it was decided that the pods should be constructed offsite and craned into position. The pods provide more than 30 new reader carrels for private study. A lightweight prefabricated Kerto timber structure was used for the construction of the fourth floor reading room, with the load transferred to the existing concrete

columns of the building below. This allowed a large new room to be provided without overloading the existing structure. The resculpted Cruikshank & Seward structure is clad in vertical ‘board-on-board’ lengths of sweet chestnut, a locally sourced and sustainable timber. It ripples around the whole of the new envelope, folding into fins on the south and west side. The 100mm wide, 22mm thick sweet chestnut cladding boards are fixed in continuous nine metre vertical lengths; in spite of their length, they are very stable, being made from short sections of coppiced sweet chestnut, finger jointed and glued together in the workshop with opposing grain directions and fixed with marine grade stainless steel screws to the timber structure. In order to express the quality and texture of the timber, the boards have been left untreated and are expected to weather to a silvery grey over time.

The building interior is finished with bespoke oak veneer panelling and solid oak reader desks and shelves. The internal joinery, including vertical board panelling, desks and readers’ chairs are designed to complement the external fins. The ground floor window frames are made from oiled solid oak internally with laminated sweet chestnut sections externally. Responsibly sourced sapele was stained to match the original African walnut in the restoration of the Stokes building.

CASE STUDY 4 M&S Cheshire Oaks, Ellesmere Port In January 2007 Marks and Spencer (M&S) launched Plan A, a commitment to combat climate change, reduce waste, use sustainable raw materials and help its customers lead healthier lifestyles. As part of this plan, the company started to develop a series of ‘sustainable learning’ stores to trial new technologies. The store (17,650m2 gross internal area) is arranged over two floors. The structure is a steel and glulam hybrid frame and comprises 48 steel columns which support the first floor and rise above it as a series of tree-like splayed arms, supporting curved glulam beams which run in a wavelike formation to create an undulating roof. Using over 36,000 stainless steel bolts, the glulam beams are fixed by means of steel cruciform connections to the splayed arms, which are fixed in turn to the primary structure with forked connections. The glulam beams comprise 38 lamellas of whitewood and incorporate carbon fibre rods to prevent delamination at the crowns of the arched roof. The first floor structure, a series of steel beams on a 5 x 10 metre grid, supports glulam joists and an LVL and screed floor with a finish of floor tiles. The glulam joists and LVL are exposed to act as the ceiling finish on the ground floor. The external walls of the store consist of prefabricated timber-framed panels developed by Lime Technology. The panels, generally 2.4m high, 4.8m wide and 400mm thick, are filled with a lime-based insulating material and a hemp and flax fibre insulating quilt, to achieve a breathable wall with a U value of 0.12W/m2K. The panels, together with recycled glass wool insulation within the roof, help to regulate internal temperature.

As part of the M&S Plan A, all timber used in the store was required to be FSCcertified. This was a challenging demand, especially considering the huge amount of timber used. • The glulam beams are of pure FSC European whitewood sourced from Austria and Germany. • The western red cedar cladding and external brise soleil were FSC-sourced from Canada. • Modular walling carcasses and LVL (laminated veneer lumber) structural flooring were from mixed FSC sources. • The glazing system incorporated FSC Bavarian European whitewood. • General internal joinery timber is European whitewood, sawn softwood, OSB and plywood • Benches were made of recycled oak sourced from the site clearance. Swift, bat and bird boxes were constructed of recycled untreated timber sourced from FSC-certified formwork off-cuts collected onsite. This flagship sustainability scheme will be covered in more depth during the Timber Talks sessions.

Timber was used, not only for its sustainable qualities but also because it was able to express the structure and honesty of the building and reduce unnecessary finishes which increase cost and energy maintenance demands in the future. All components were modelled in 3D, ensuring that the design was fully

British Timber in Construction Adapt Centre for the Built Environment The UEA Enterprise Centre will house the Centre for the Built Environment in July 2014. Underway now the build aims for Passivhaus certification and BREEAM Outstanding. It will use natural materials from local supply chains, including timber from Thetford Forest in the form of Brettstapel panels, glulam beams and Larsen trusses with new supply chains being forged. Sustainable Woodland and Forest Projects Tree surgeons create a sustainable office The Frankland Tree Services Ltd office building is constructed using reclaimed Cheshire brick, reclaimed Welsh slate (traditional materials for the area) and local timber. There are nineteen varieties of timber in the fabric of the building and a further ten or so in furniture and temporary art pieces. None of this timber has been grown for timber or felled for timber. It all comes from the arisings of local arboricultural activities – felled trees from the urban environment. Living willow bridge How do you stop a timber footbridge from decaying? Well, at Cow Hollow they have planted a bridge! The plans for a Living Willow Bridge are now reality after much thinking and doing. Using coppiced willow from the surrounding plantation they have woven a willow arch and deck that has been planted into the ditch bank. The Woodland Trust has sponsored the project. Smith and Wallwork and Cambridge University were jointly responsible for the design and installation. Construction began in November 2012 and the main arch and deck were completed in December 2012, a total of some 175 hours of volunteer work were spent on site. The bridge uses white willow and osier, there is no concrete, metal or plastic to be seen just what was sourced from the plantation.

BDP Set to Design UK's Greenest Building Norwich councillors have given the go-ahead for a new low carbon exemplar building for the University of East Anglia within the Norwich Research Park (NRP). BDP’s engineers are working on the NRP Enterprise Centre which will push the boundaries of the University’s already established approach to developing energy efficient buildings. Working with Architype, the project will be the UK’s first commercial building to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating and be Passivhaus certified. The project is on target to be a ‘carbon sink’, through maximising the use of local materials and construction. It will not only provide a low embodied carbon building but help stimulate the local economy and traditional skills. Timber will come from Thetford Forest, straw for the innovative

prefabricated thatch panels from Norfolk and building materials such as rammed chalk, heather and flint will all be locally sourced and fabricated. Half of the building will provide lettable floor space for SME start-up businesses including offices, meeting rooms and hot desks, with the rest housing teaching and learning facilities for the University. Construction is expected to start this summer to allow the centre to open in January 2015.

Wood First Plus Gathers Momentum The first elements of a comprehensive new online database for construction professionals on timber’s technical performance and environmental characteristics will soon be live. Center Parcs Go Glulam Center Parcs has transported over £1m worth of timber from Austria for its new £250m forest village in the Woburn Forest, Bedfordshire. The new swimming pool complex will be constructed using 46 glulam beams, with the longest being 70m, a record for the UK. The beams are making the 960-mile journey from Austria and will take construction workers 12 weeks to assemble the complex and secure the beams. Don Camilleri, Woburn Construction Director, Center Parcs UK, said: “The Subtropical Swimming Paradise is such an iconic building, which many families recognise as a significant feature at Center Parcs, so it is exciting that the structure for Woburn Forest is now starting to take shape. Work on site

is really progressing at pace now and we are on track for the spring 2014 opening.” In line with Center Parcs’ commitment to protecting the natural environment, the beams are sustainably sourced and are PEFC-certified. Bowmer & Kirkland was appointed by Center Parcs to build the leisure buildings and facilities at Woburn Forest, including the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, and B&K Structures are overseeing the construction, delivery and assembly of the glulam beams. Once open from spring 2014, the Subtropical Swimming Paradise will be heated to 29.5°C, whatever the weather. Timber Biodiversity Nest for Eden Project Design Consultants Blue Forest and Jerry Tate Architects have unveiled plans for The Biodiversity Nest that will form part of the new Rainforest Canopy Walkway at The Eden Project in Cornwall. The project will provide a new high level route and a new education experience at Eden within the Humid Tropics Biome. The timber and steel-framed treehouse will sit at the middle of the Humid Tropics Biome. Two 16m bridges either side will give visitors a new way to walk through the steamy tropical environment. It forms the first phase of what will be a three year project to bring what's been described as "a new education experience" to the Eden Project, which holds the largest indoor rainforest in the world inside its huge plastic domes. Jerry Tate commented: “The Biodiversity Nest is an interesting

technical challenge as we have to provide a spectacular education space which is comfortable for visitors in the Rainforest environment, with a limited choice of materials that can cope with the aggressive environment. As well as a galvanised steel superstructure we have been experimenting with heat treated softwoods, as a substitute for robust but unsustainable tropical hardwoods, to form the timber enclosure and deck.” The Biodiversity Nest will be used as an education space concentrating on biodiversity in the natural rainforest. The walkway will be constructed in phases over the next three years.

Standard Flawed Say BWF As part of the consultation on the BES 6001 standard for the ‘Responsible sourcing of construction products’, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has expressed its views to BRE that if the standard is to achieve the same level of credibility as material stewardship schemes such as FSC and PEFC, then it would need to see some major changes. BES 6001 has been heavily promoted as an ‘Environmental and Sustainability Standard’, with certificate holders marketing it as comparable to, or better than, the material stewardship schemes that timber has in place. The BWF has grave concerns about these claims and maintains that BES 6001 is not comparable to timber certification schemes for the simple reason that the standard does not promote sustainable natural resource management and raw material stewardship. BWF Policy Executive Matt Mahony commented: “The basic cost of implementing BES 6001 runs in to tens of thousands, but the question remains as to what this actually delivers in terms of genuinely responsible sourcing. A company supplying products of dubious extraction or origin would score well providing they had process management systems in place, but the small company supplying only certified timber would be

penalised. In this sense BES 6001 is ‘failing the Ronseal test’ and not delivering what it claims.” “In the broader interest of supporting sustainable construction, we have no issue with businesses within other material sectors working to source products responsibly through their own sector schemes. These sectors clearly have the potential to develop mechanisms that will eventually give consumers genuine confidence in the legality and sustainability of their product. They should be rewarded when this happens and not before.” In the case of a timber construction product, a purchaser is likely to find that responsible sourcing issues for their product have already been addressed in the supply chain. Timber sector businesses will be following their legal requirements under the EUTR (whereby due diligence is carried out on the source of the timber product), and, crucially, they may have FSC and/or PEFC certification on top of that, which now also encapsulates issues such as health and safety.

Wickes Choose SCA Timber SCA Timber Supply has won the contract to supply DIY chain Wickes with all of its timber and wood-based products. The four-year supply chain agreement commences in July. SCA is taking over as supplier from Metsä Wood, which had been working with Wickes for 15 years. “SCA has been consistently growing its UK market share in recent years using

our category management approach,” said Stephen King, Commercial Director at SCA Timber Supply UK. “The agreement increases the size of our UK operations and simultaneously will strengthen our ability to service our existing and expanding customer base in the DIY retail and builders merchants sectors.” SCA had been supplying decking products to Wickes for the past year.

Thermal Mass Study Backs Timber Frame

The results of the study showed that thermal mass in domestic buildings has a negligible effect on overheating during occupied hours.

Research commissioned by the Steel Construction Institute and undertaken in partnership with Oxford Brookes University rebuffs wider construction industry concerns that lightweight timber frame construction performs poorly. To investigate the risk of overheating across different construction types under different climate assumptions, a dynamic thermal simulation model of a typical three-bedroom house was developed using a model from Environmental Design Solutions Limited, that allowed modelling of the internal temperatures of a building as well as its heating and cooling demands. The results of the study showed that thermal mass in domestic buildings has a negligible effect on overheating during occupied hours. However it highlighted that if the climate warms in the future,

the risk of overheating may well increase. For this reason the study maintains it is sensible to consider cooling strategies that will mitigate this risk and hopefully avoid the need for air conditioning.
