WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL TIMBER EVENT A special welcome to everybody exhibiting and visiting Timber Expo 2012. As you will see from the expanded size and scope of this year’s event, Timber Expo has come a long way in a very short space of time. The last 12 months have flown by since our inaugural event and this year there is a huge amount to experience. Timber sits at the centre of the construction industry as a truly sustainable and 100% renewable material. This has always been one of its unique selling points alongside its versatility, structural strength and fantastic aesthetic feel. As you will see from all the activity in the Jaguar Halls this year, it is encouraging to see so much innovation and energy shining out of the timber sector, in an economic and construction climate that we all know has looked and felt a lot better. The timber industry is constantly developing new directions, new markets and new products. You will see from the impressive range of sponsors and exhibitors this year that all four corners of the timber industry are represented and as a visitor, no matter what role you have in your own particular field, you will find something of value during your time at the show.

programme of seminars to do just that – including one from The Olympic Delivery Authority itself on the groundbreaking procurement and supply of timber to the Olympic Park. Make sure you also spend some time looking at the Wood Awards shortlist. Here you will see some of the finest architecture in the UK showcasing what can be achieved with timber by committed and far sighted architects, designers and constructors. Learning and knowledge transfer is something that TRADA is extremely passionate about and this year you can hear more about TRADA’s University Engagement Programme in a special seminar aimed at University and College Schools of the Built Environment. We are keen that Timber Expo is not just a simple exhibition. We want and genuinely expect the event to become a national timber hub where you can network, learn, get excited and above all do some valuable business with this fantastic material. Have a rewarding and enjoyable visit to Timber Expo and thanks for attending.

Just like the Olympics we want to ‘inspire a generation’ and there is a huge focus throughout our in-depth Timber Talks

A BIG THANK YOU Hello everyone and welcome to this year’s show. And what a busy one this is going to be for everybody as there is so much to see and do. Timber Expo is committed to profiling the best the industry has to offer and we have an enormous display of timber delights for you from many major UK and overseas companies. Once again the support, energy, innovation and design prowess that the timber industry continues to display has quickly made Timber Expo one of the strongest events on the construction calendar. Next year’s dates are already confirmed for 24-25 September 2013 and I will be on hand this year in the Sales & Press Lounge at the centre of the Jaguar Hall to discuss the many options for feature areas, sponsorship and exhibition space for 2013. Do drop in and have a chat. Finally, a massive thank you to all our sponsors, exhibitors, media partners and supporters – your endorsement of the show is truly appreciated. Have a wonderful couple of days – enjoy the show!

SEMINAR THEATRE I Created by the UK SIP Association 8

www.uksips.org

The UK SIPS theatre will be hard to miss. Its creative structure will be one of the highlights of the show with the name - the Helix building - coming from the view from above. The sculpted roof panels form the shape of a helix and although it is purely an aesthetic aspect of the structure, it is designed to demonstrate that intricate shapes and overhangs can be achieved using SIPS technology. “We have adopted a minimalist approach to the design of the theatre”, says Charles Stewart, Chairman of the UK SIP Association. “Our desire is to demonstrate the inherent strength and structural load-bearing characteristics of SIPS. The 48sqm footprint has only one structural beam – the ridge beam that runs down the centreline of the roof structure. There are no posts, joists or stiffeners within the structure and this goes to show how the ‘monocoque’ stressed skin composite panel technology works in practice.”

technology capabilities and knowledge of SIP detailing.

The Helix structure is constructed using standard dimension SIP wall panels but the roof uses a ‘jumbo’ SIP that spans 4.8m unsupported from ridge to eaves. A range of insulation core thicknesses are used to demonstrate how a SIP panel can be readily increased in thickness to achieve both structural and thermal requirements.

There will be a range of SIPS and hybrid case studies within the Helix building over the two days of the show so there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to get to grips with what SIPS offer.

The Helix building took less than four hours to erect – from blank exhibition floor to handing over to the show organisers. This is one of the major benefits of keeping the structure simple but interesting. After the show, 100% of the Helix building will be recycled, and with all the wall panels of standard dimensions, the roof panels will be trimmed and reused in live projects.

For more case studies and technical information on SIPS please visit: www.uksips.org

The Helix building is also all about efficiency – structural efficiency, space efficiency, thermal efficiency and ultimately energy efficiency. It embraces and demonstrates ‘fabric first’ principles and ensures that visitors to Timber Expo and delegates to the Timber Talk seminars will leave with a thorough understanding of SIP

SEMINAR THEATRE 2 Created by Frame Wise 12

www.framewiseltd.co.uk

Not only will this structure be a talking point for the timber technology on show, it will provide a significant vantage point for visitors to look out over Timber Expo. For Managing Director, Simon Orrells, the two days of Timber Expo are going to be very exciting. “The theatre construction is a showcase for timber systems,” says Simon. The ground floor will host the seminar theatre and via an external staircase will access the first floor which will host supply chain partners, as well as including a sunken balcony area that will act as a media area for people to catch a bird’s eye view of the show and which can also be used for meetings or as an interview area. The single-storey section is made especially for the show but after Timber Expo the two-storey section will go back out into a live project. For ease of viewing, Frame Wise will have turned part of the theatre ‘inside out’. As you walk around the gable end of the two-storey section, there is the external staircase and the wall including the windows and doors are flipped, so from the inside it looks like an external wall and from the outside you will see the various products in situ. Here Simon believes the building tours will deliver more impact. “I think what people want is detail and hard information.

Sponsors of the Visitor Guide Visit us on stand G1

Visitors want to come away with something that they didn’t know or weren’t aware of previously. That is one of our key aims.” A TV screen on one of the external walls will run a time lapse film of the seminar theatre structure being erected from blank exhibition floor to finished completed building. This also includes case study projects and material from several of Frame Wise’s supply sponsors including: Boise, Superglass, Cellecta and Simpson Strong Tie plus others. “It’s a fantastic story,” says Simon. “With the theatre, we can give everyone an insight into the collection of Frame Wise technologies and why timber should be the material of choice. Basically, if visitors don’t know how successful timber frame can be after being in our seminar theatre for two days there is no hope.” Why not stop by, ask questions and challenge us on your next project

SEMINAR THEATRE 3 Created by Deeside Timberframe with James Jones & Sons 16

In a joint venture between two of the timber sector’s most familiar names, this structure will showcase the flexibility and adaptability of the timber components developed and manufactured by both companies. Seminar Theatre 3 demonstrates that timber can be used in almost any kind of structure, bringing significant health and safety, programme, cost and environmental benefits to the table. The structure is mainly single storey but incorporates the James Jones IntelliRoof system over one end of the theatre. The roof system includes a Velux Cabrio balcony window and there is a JJI-Joist cassette floor panel to complete the room in the roof design. The wall panels are made up of JJI, metal web and space studs (220mm deep) ranging in height from 2.4 up to 3.6m high clad with 9mm OSB sheathing with the walls sloping up from the main entrance towards the room in the roof section. The curved roof over the main entrance area is formed in loose engineered joist rafters supported on two curved glulam beams, 300mm deep, which are in turn supported by glulam support posts.

Sponsors of the Visitor Guide Visit us on stand G1

After the show, the components of the structure will be recycled and some of them are already being re-used from previous shows. The theatre provides the ideal platform to demonstrate to specifiers, architects, engineers and surveyors why timber related products are packed full of benefits. www.deesidetimberframe.com www.jamesjones.co.uk

The 2012 Shortlist is showcased at Timber Expo and selected projects will be presented by the architects and designers to form part of theTimber Talks programme of seminars. This year’s shortlist features unique private houses and stunning small projects, outstanding restorations, splendid public buildings and unique furniture ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge, all of which are strong candidates for Awards’ main categories, which have been updated for the 2012 competition.

Canada Wood, the joint initiative between the Canadian government and timber industry association partners representing producers in Canada, and the timber industry’s sustainability and promotion campaign Wood for Good, have both this year become lead sponsors of the Wood Awards, alongside long-standing supporters the American Hardwood Export Council and the Carpenters’ Company. Other sponsors include TRADA and American Softwoods, with support from BRE.

Michael Morrison of Purcell UK and Chairman of the Judges said, “The entries this year have been excellent, with a wide variety and some very interesting projects. As always, the shortlisting was an exciting process this year, made more difficult by the impressive number of entries. The Wood Awards shortlist really is a short list, and there was a lot of heated argument on the way to agreeing our chosen 30 projects. We knew 2012 would be an interesting year and it has not disappointed.”

The judges are visiting the shortlist over the coming months, and the winners – including the coveted Gold Award winner – will be announced on 27 November at Carpenters’ Hall in London.

TECHNICAL TOURS

24

The TRADA stand at Timber Expo 2012 is going to take your breath away. A team of engineers at Ramboll Computational Design (RCD) have created a plywood sculpture inspired by a timber gridshell sculpture which spreads like a tree across the foyer of Ramboll UK’s London office. Choosing plywood for the structure offers several advantages. It is very economical, due to new techniques in digital fabrication allowing the design and production of bespoke parts at very low cost, relative to other materials. James Latham has supplied 25 birch plywood panels to build the gridshell, while Lonza Wood Protection has provided a proven fire retardant protection through its DRICON impregnation treatment. The challenges of the design and build plus the 3D modeling techniques used to create the stand – will be discussed by design engineer, Harri Lewis of Ramboll UK in two seminars taking place on the 24 and 25 at 10.30am in Seminar Theatre 3. TRADA will be holding a seminar aimed at University and College Schools of the Built Environment and the timber industry. This event will take place between 10.00 and 12.00 on the morning of Wednesday 26 September in the Jaguar Suite. There will be two sessions one focusing on the design competitions TRADA has supported with the second covering some timber related research at UK universities. TRADA has also arranged a programme of Timber Frame and Fire Tours at Timber Expo 2012 to highlight the latest solutions in timber frame and fire during construction. TRADA Technology specialists will provide an informed commentary on the technical and regulatory drivers behind them. The Timber Frame and Fire

Tours will be offered twice daily, 10:00 – 11:00 am and 2:30 – 3:30 pm. The tour is FREE to attend for all Timber Expo visitors and will last up to an hour. Spaces, however, will be limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. The tour will visit the following stands: British Gypsum, Bluwood Nexgen Advanced, Frame Wise, Lonza Wood Protection, Osmose, Norbord, Coillte, James Latham, Oregon Timber and Val – U – Therm Attendees will then be invited back to the TRADA stand for a drink and offered the opportunity to chat with TRADA Technology’s technical consultants on any wood related technical issues. All TRADA tours will depart from the TRADA stand. www.trada.co.uk

Timber Expo is committed to profiling the best the timber industry has to offer and we are ready to reward it. Timber is highly versatile and has many applications. The UK timber supply-chain is also highly complex and globalised with bags of innovation. Much of this innovation will be on display at Timber Expo 2012. Timber Expo and TRADA teamed up to joint-sponsor this award and have been thrilled at the levels of expertise and innovation shown by all the projects, products and people involved. After a record number of 27 entries, it was a tough test for the judges to agree on a final 10 and even tougher to create a shortlist and a winner. SEE US ON STAND A16

This is all tailored to them. With time a critical element, they can be more efficient in what they do with their valuable time across the two days and maximise the potential for creating and exploiting the best of business from Timber Expo. The primary aim of the Forum is for exhibitors to access relevant buyers, and match suppliers wants with the Buyer’s preferences. Each appointment will be scheduled to last 30 minutes and appointments appear in the individual online diary of both the Buyer and the exhibitor. This focused approach has proved to be highly successful in creating new business relationships and facilitating meetings that allow everyone to get the most out of their time at the show. INDUSTRY SUMMIT

Timber Industry Summit

2012

ProTimber

31

A new dimension has been added to Timber Expo with the launch of ProTimber 2012. This is the first of an annual gathering of timber industry leaders on the eve of the exhibition halls opening for business. This special half day event is designed to bring together a cross-section of individuals from all corners of the timber industry to discuss current trends in the sector and inspire everyone on a future path ahead for the timber and wood products sector. This year’s ProTimber Summit discussed the findings of some jointly commissioned research by TRADA and Timber Expo. Concentrating on market trends and competitor materials, the discussions centred on how to identify key opportunities and new trends but also how to approach the many threats pressing timber as a mainstream construction material. Chaired by a professional facilitator, this invitation only forum represents different parts of the timber supply chain. The aim was clear – a lively informed debate in a structured manner. This arena was designed to flush out individual and company opinions, tease out detail from research and also air any legitimate objections. All areas of the industry took part, from clients and contractors to project managers, quantity surveyors, merchants and product developers. John White, Chief Executive, Timber Trade Federation, says: “With the industry coming

together at Timber Expo we have a great opportunity to discuss and shape the future direction of our whole supply chain. With industry bodies now working ever closer together, meaningful, at-the-coal-face input from senior business people will augment and refine the positive steps, such as the Wood First campaign, that are being taken to grow the use of wood.” Not only is the summit a high level staging post for the industry, it is an excellent networking event with other senior leaders. If you wish to attend ProTimber 2013 you should initially make contact with your relevant Trade Association. Many thanks to all our supporting Trade Associations for involvement in this year’s Summit.

The British are notoriously bad at blowing their own trumpets. But at TRADA we believe it’s about time we made a noise – and we’re certainly not ashamed to say we’ve got plenty to shout about. TRADA is an internationally recognised centre of excellence on the specification and use of timber and wood products. In its long and illustrious history, TRADA has been involved in many groundbreaking projects furthering the use of timber. Its position in the industry is unique with a diverse membership encompassing companies and individuals from around the world and across the entire wood supply chain, from producers, merchants and manufacturers, to architects, engineers and end users. Membership to TRADA is not like any other organisation. TRADA is unique in that all members’ fees are put back into information and research programmes that will benefit the members: it’s a virtuous circle with a whole host of technical and marketing benefits. There are many different publications that can be viewed or downloaded free online. These include the popular Wood Information Sheets, technical information like the best-selling titles Timber Frame Construction 4th Edition and Timber Decking, as well as a range of inspirational case studies and timber solutions. There are other advantages too. The TRADA website receives an enormous amount of traffic – around 41,000 visits every month – and with its recent revamp, this figure is only set to increase. It also delivers 55,000 pages of supplier information from the Supplier Directory.

Sponsors of the Visitor Guide Visit us on stand G1

Not surprisingly, as the UK’s most comprehensive listing of companies supplying timber-related products and professional services, it is very important to be listed. A new feature of the Supplier Directory is the ability for members to be able to add product brochures to their company information – another great way to gain exposure to potential customers. There are also benefits to be realised from some of TRADA’s events, such as discounts for exhibiting at Timber Expo and on TRADAorganised commercial training events, while attendance at regional seminars is free. TRADA members are entitled to discounts of 10% off all British Standards and up to 50% off TRADA publications and other publishers in the bookshop.

Specifiers and contractors can join online at www.trada.co.uk/membership, or alternatively downloadable forms for all membership categories are available at www.trada.co.uk/membership Or you can just phone our membership department on 01494 569603 or email membership@trada.co.uk www.trada.co.uk

and aligning it more closely than ever with the production side of its business to create a more streamlined approach. And in today’s increasingly competitive market this can have such a big impact on their margins. Working closely with architects and builders, Pasquill can come up with intelligent design solutions that not only fulfil requirements, but which shave off cost where possible in ways they may not have otherwise considered. Visitors to the show will be able to talk to Pasquill staff about the design solutions it offers. More news from Pasquill is the company’s success in achieving CE Mark certification for Trusses and Posi-JoistsTM manufactured at all of its branches around the UK. Accsys Technologies PLC, the company behind Accoya® wood and Tricoya® wood elements, is excited to return to Timber Expo 2012 as a Gold Sponsor to showcase its latest innovations and project successes.

Created from sustainably sourced wood, Accoya® does not compromise on performance, strength or aesthetics, which makes it perfect for a variety of external uses such as windows, doors, cladding, decking and major structures.

2011 was an exciting year for Accsys Technologies. Accoya® wood is now distributed in over 30 countries around the world as the word about its use and benefits spreads and we also won the TTJ Market Development Award, sponsored jointly by TRADA Technology and Timber Expo 2011. Independent research results from TRADA, announced during 2011, demonstrated Accoya® wood’s outstanding coating performance exceeded a range of well known coated timber cladding products. In addition, the BRE 13-year window L joint study concluded that Accoya® wood can produce windows with a 60-year service life with a standard maintenance programme.

One year on from the launch of Medite® Tricoya® – the first major innovation in the wood composites industry in more than 30 years – the material will return to Timber Expo to reveal why it has become so successful. Since last year, a selected distribution network has been signed up, and sales and range of applications for the world’s first extreme durable and stable MDF are increasing month-onmonth. This unique extreme durable MDF comes with a 50-year warranty and heralds a revolution in wood-based panel products for exterior and interior wet applications and will, yet again, be showcased at Timber Expo 2012.

With projects already complete in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, customers are finding that Medite Tricoya machines, cleans and performs to an impressively high standard. Darren Smith, workshop foreman for AMS Joinery in Maidstone, said: “Medite Tricoya was clearly developed for a good reason. It doesn’t move, it easily handles wet environments without change and has proved to be the perfect product for us. It’s a more expensive product but it is well worth it.” This industry is changing. SmartPly offers a fully certified, legal and sustainable OSB alternative to tropical plywood when it comes to legally compliant wood panels for a whole variety of building applications. Because it is important to use a board suitable for the job, SmartPly is launching a new product at the show. ToughPly will make its debut at TimberExpo this year. It is a board that can be used in a wide range of structural and non-structural applications. It is a double-sided, pre-coated structural OSB3 panel that complies with all new and forthcoming legislation for wood-based panel products – perfect timing for builders, timber merchants, builders’ merchants and DIY retailers gearing up for EU Timber Regulation compliance in 2013. As a general builders’ board, ToughPly is the ideal choice for a whole range of applications.

All SmartPly panels are manufactured in accordance with EN 300, with attention to quality and detail. Panels can be nailed as close as 10mm from the edge, with no risk of splintering or delamination. With zero added formaldehyde, no knot holes or core voids, FSCcertified and fully documented OSB panels are the versatile choice over undocumented tropical plywood; easy to cut, plane, route and work with. With an eye to 2013 and the EU Timber Regulation, SmartPly understands the importance of legality and sustainable compliance when it comes to wood products too. Because the timber used to make all SmartPly panels is sourced from our own FSCcertified forests, before being shipped to its destination, merchants and end users have added peace of mind when choosing SmartPly OSB panels.

The ToughPly boards are sanded and finished on both sides. The double-sided coating can be painted directly with no further surface preparation, to save considerable time onsite in lots of applications.

Combining legal compliance across the board with real versatility for a whole range of general building jobs, SmartPly ToughPly is the OSB name of choice for those seeking cost effectiveness, reliable performance and legal peace of mind from their wood panel products.

ToughPly fulfils all the legal requirements where the building regulations require materials to be tested for durability, strength and loading in structural applications. It is fully tested in accordance with EN 13986 and bears the CE mark to prove this.

Frame Wise Takes Centre Stage Frame Wise Ltd will be building and showcasing a broad range of timber solutions designed to stimulate delegates and heighten awareness of the range of timber systems available from Frame Wise. Frame Wise was an integral part of the show in 2011 and this year has taken that commitment to a new level. Frame Wise has taken a stand at the show but has also built the super-structure Seminar Theatre 2 which will host a series of high-end speakers including the only Olympicfocused seminar: ‘the timber legacy’ presented by Noah Bold from the Olympic Delivery Authority. Simon Orrells, Frame Wise managing director comments on Timber Expo and why it’s right for Frame Wise to take center stage: “We’re a pretty bold business in the way we attack the construction industry and we have the luxury of working with some of the UK’s leading social housing providers, housebuilders and private clients. We are incredibly serious about the future of timber in construction and it’s vital that we take the bull by the horns and demonstrate

Sponsors of the Visitor Guide Visit us on stand G1

the broad range of timber solutions available to clients. In terms of building the seminar theatre it wouldn’t be Frame Wise if we didn’t push the build project to the absolute limit – the whole point of Timber Expo is that we leave delegates feeling excited about timber – we’re confident the ‘Frame Wise House’ will showcase the capability of timber in delivering cost effective and future proof accommodation.” Frame Wise has developed a unique approach to the construction of the two-storey structure and has ‘flipped’ some of the walls so delegates can view the interior make-up of the products in-situ. The house also features a number of screens which will showcase the building of the structure. Simon continues: “This is the most exciting structure within the exhibition and we are anticipating huge numbers coming into the house – whether that’s attending a seminar, carrying out a media interview in the VIP area or meeting as part of the Buyers Forum – it’s essential that we make the flow as seamless as possible. www.framewiseltd.co.uk

Norbord, the UK’s leading producer of woodbased panel products, will present its three core products – Sterling OSB, Caberdek particleboard flooring and Caberwood MDF – at this year’s Timber Expo using a stand made entirely of its own products. The focus of Norbord’s message at the show is the inherent sustainability of softwood products from managed forests. All of the products manufactured by Norbord make efficient use of sources of wood fibre that were once regarded as either waste or low-value byproduct. Sterling OSB will provide the walls of the stand, while Caberdek boards (complete with their moisture-resistant protective film) will be used for the floor. Stand furniture is to be made from Caberwood MDF – a staple product for furniture and interior fit-out.

otherwise be sent to landfill or burned. Norbord’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact extend well beyond its choice of raw materials. An important environmental initiative is Norbord’s extensive use of biomass to provide heat energy for its production lines. Residues arising from the production process fuel biomass boilers at each of Norbord’s four European factories. Over the past decade, this has allowed Norbord to reduce its consumption of fossil fuels by over 75% and, today, the company is the UK’s largest generator of renewable heat energy.

Sterling OSB and Caberwood MDF are both made from forest thinnings – small diameter logs from young trees which are felled as part of sustainable forestry practice to allow space for larger trees to mature. All of this timber is harvested locally in Scotland which not only benefits the local economy but also reduces lorry miles to a minimum.

Among important new developments is the development of the Caberfix Pro fixing kit for installers of Caberdek flooring. Each kit includes everything needed to install 50sqm of floor and incorporates Norbord’s new Joint & Joist moisture proof adhesive. Also on display will be the new No-Squeak adhesive developed for builders in the refurbishment and maintenance sectors. This flexible gap-filling product is designed to accommodate movement in new floors and prevent the previously widespread problem of squeaky floors.

Caberdek particleboard flooring is made from up to 80% recycled wood which would

It is renowned for its editorial content and impartial perspective on latest business and market trends across the timber industry, provided by an experienced team of journalists and experts on the sector. Some of its regular writers are also currently working in the industry and other leading figures from the industry in the UK and abroad also contribute as guest columnists. The TTJ’s core readership are timber importers and distributors, and major international suppliers to the UK market around the world. But it has subscribers in all parts of the supply chain; its coverage extends from forestry and primary production, through sawmilling and initial processing, to shipping, distribution and end user markets. It also covers technical issues, wood-processing machinery and timber treatments and finishes and key environmental topics. Every edition additionally includes production, supply and pricing market trend reports by product sector, country and region.

Timber in Construction (TiC) is a high quality, full colour publication that features all of the latest news, industry developments and in depth features on the world of timber frame construction, engineered wood and associated products. As timber continues to challenge steel, brick and block as a construction method, more and more people want to know about the benefits of using timber as a building material. Not only is the material better for the environment as a sustainable and renewable resource, it helps stem the growth of global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Timber frame construction is also cheaper, faster to erect, more energy efficient and creates less construction waste.

TTJ also publishes Timber & Sustainable Building, the leading UK title for the rapidly developing timber construction sector, which is read by architects, housebuilders, contractors, developers, engineers and surveyors. It also has a website: www.timber-building.com.

TiC is distributed to a wide range of construction professionals including contractors, engineers, architects and specifiers. American Softwoods is the umbrella name for two trade associations – the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) and the Softwood Export Council (SEC). SFPA’s members are based mainly in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Texas and Georgia. They produce Southern Yellow Pine, the generic name for Shortleaf, Longleaf, Loblolly and Slash Pine. SEC’s members are located in Oregon and Washington. They produce Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar. Most US softwood exported is for nonstructural uses. Interior applications, such as doors, windows, frames, mouldings, flooring, panelling, and other millwork is a prime destination for both Pine and Fir species.

Furniture parts and glued panels are also a destination for softwood lumber. Western species, such as Douglas Fir and Hemlock, in the clear and other upper grades are prized in Europe for wood window and door stock and frames. For strength, long lengths and large sections of solid lumber the Pacific Northwest is the place to go. When it comes to building outdoors, pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine lumber remains the number one choice and when compared with alternative composite products now entering the market, treated Southern Yellow Pine outshines the competition hands down. www.americansoftwoods.com

Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) PEFC is a global, non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent, third party certification. With some 30 endorsed national certification schemes – including the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) and the US Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) – and more than 240 million hectares of certified forests, PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification system. PEFC is committed to conserving forests and their invaluable biodiversity and safeguarding the livelihoods of the communities and families that own, work and live in and around them. The organisation works throughout the forest supply chain to promote best practice in the forest and ensure that timber products are sourced with respect for stringent ecological, social and ethical standards. Its distinctive ‘Green Trees’ logo enables ready identification of products from responsibly-managed forests. The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) was established in January 1992 to promote the development and growth of the Malaysian timber industry. MTC's main objectives are to promote the Malaysian timber trade and develop the market for timber products globally, to promote the development of the timber industry by expanding the industry's manufacturing technology base, provide information services to the timber industry and to protect and improve the Malaysian timber industry'sglobal image. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program was launched in 1994 as one of the USA forest sector’s contributions to the vision of Sponsors of the Visitor Guide Visit us on stand G1

sustainable development established by the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. With 79 million hectares certified across Canada and the United States, SFI has strong acceptance in the global marketplace, delivering a steady supply of timber and wood-products from legal and responsible sources. The UK Contractors Group (UKCG) now stipulates that all timber products purchased for either temporary or permanent use on member sites should be certified as legally and sustainably sourced, as defined by the UK Government’s Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET). The UKCG policy gives clear and transparent preference to products that demonstrate compliance with responsible sourcing schemes and certified by a third party that maintains an unbroken chain of custody. www.pefc.co.uk www.mtc.com.my www.sfiprogram.org

Hybrid combines the advantage of the long life and low maintenance of aluminium externally with all the aesthetic and performance benefits of engineered timber internally. Hybrid’s aluminium profiles can be supplied fully powder coated using Senior’s in-house facility, one of the largest and technically most advanced in the country. The result is single source responsibility, minimal maintenance and maximum lifetime performance.

Choice of appearance Hybrid windows feature either lacquered or painted timber internally. As the internal surfaces are fabricated from engineered timber, there is no requirement to paint as there are no knots to obscure. Externally, Hybrid offers a choice of finishes in polyester powder paint – virtually any RAL colour in either gloss, satin or matt. An anodised external finish is also available.

Product Range The Hybrid family comprises the Series 1 range of traditional composite windows and doors, the Series 2 contemporary collection of commercial slim-line windows and the Series 3 composite curtain wall system.

Lifecycle Hybrid offers minimal maintenance throughout its serviceable life and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life.

Thermal efficiency Hybrid windows offer the thermal efficiency of timber combined with the latest glass technology to produce U-values well below the current and anticipated future Building Regulation requirements. Low maintenance Hybrid provides the advantage of fully pretreated engineered timber internally, so any possibility of warping or twisting is eliminated. This, combined with the benefits of powder coated aluminium windows externally, means maintenance is minimal.

All timber used in Senior’s Hybrid range of products is sourced only from PEFC-certified sustainable sources. The system is designed and manufactured within the UK, and is fabricated by an approved network of UK companies under a typical supply and fix subcontract. Designed and manufactured in the UK, Hybrid is fabricated by a network of UK companies which makes it an ideal solution for both newbuild and refurbishment projects where site measurement is required.

The founders of Sips UK have over twenty eight years experience manufacturing composite panels, from exotic carbon fibre with honeycomb cores to rather low tech truck bodies. Approximately twenty years ago we were involved in the manufacture of the first Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) in the UK, designed specifically for the building industry. Then thirteen years ago, in conjunction with Siptec, we erected what may have been the first SIP building for habitation in the country. Through working with a number of other SIP manufacturers over the past thirteen years, we as a company have seen the mistakes and pitfalls made by others and are in a unique position to redeem these problems within our company.

With our vast experience and industry knowledge we provide a one-stop shop facility allowing us to tailor a build package that ideally suits every client's requirement. Sips UK are at the forefront of offsite and fast track building systems. We employ modern methods of construction (MMC) whilst manufacturing all of our SIPs systems in house. We appreciate that SIPs are a relatively new innovation and that clients who have never used SIPs before are naturally sceptical. At Sips UK we have the patience to listen to our client's brief and to assist where required, thus enabling you to make an informed decision as to which solution bests suits your particular project.
