AR CH ITECTUR A L PR OV ENA NC E Normandy House has an interesting history and architectural provenance, and has been published frequently. There are interesting references in the following: Long Island’s Prominent Families in Southampton: Their Estates and Their Country Homes. Raymond and Judith Spinzia (2010). Some of the Work of Polhemus & Coffin Architects. Columbia University Press, New York City. Small French Buildings: The Architecture of Town and Country. Coffin, Polhemus & Worthington (Charles Scribner & Sons, 1921). The estate, originally named Chateau O’Brien, was built by Kenneth O’Brien c. 1925. O’Brien was a partner with O’Brien, Boardman, Conboy, Memhard & Early and, he was a New York judge. Polhemus & Coffin designed Normandy House, and were leaders in the Normandy School of architecture which contributed a number of important residences in the northeast U.S. in the 1920s and 1930s. Together, they published Small French Buildings: The Architecture of Town and Country (1921). Several distinctive features of Normandy House were clearly inspired by French country homes illustrated in this book. This architectural firm, Polhemus & Coffin, designed both Normandy House as well as Pommiers, the neighboring estate. Originally named Windswept, the neighboring home was built c. 1930 by A. B. Boardman who was O’Brien’s friend and business partner. The land was purchased and developed together by these gentlemen and the original estates have remained intact without development since the 1920s.
