KID-FRIENDLY MEALS I

with a Tropical Twist

inside Kid-Friendly Recipes

Family Features

s your family tired of eating the same thing for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Not sure if trying a new recipe fits into your busy schedule? It’s easier than you think to break out of the usual routine, especially when you have these quick, kid-friendly recipes that bring a taste of the tropics to your meals. Mangos make the difference in these recipes — adding a splash of color and vibrant flavor to a savory breakfast burrito, hot panini or a tasty salmon and veggie dinner. And adding mango to the menu provides plenty of good nutrition. Mangos are an excellent source of vitamins C and A. Vitamin C promotes healthy immune function, while vitamin A is important for vision and bone growth. When choosing a mango, don’t rely on color alone. Instead, gently squeeze the mango. A ripe mango will be firm with just a little give, like a ripe peach or avocado. If your mango isn’t ripe, keep it out on the counter; it will continue to ripen at room temperature, becoming sweeter and softer over several days. Once ripe, move it to the refrigerator, where whole, ripe mangos will keep for up to five days.

Walking Improves General Health and Well-being Walking is one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise The importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aides to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with oth-

High Falls State Park

MANSFIELD

In the early 1800s, this site was a prosperous industrial town with several stores, a grist mill, cotton gin, blacksmith shop, shoe factory and hotel. High Falls later became a ghost town in the late 1800s when a major railroad bypassed it. Today, park visitors can enjoy the scenic waterfall on the Towaliga River and hike to the remaining grist mill foundation. The state park, which is 1,050 acres, has a 650-acre lake, 103 campsites (tent, trailer, RV), 6 yurts, 5 picnic shelters, playground, miniature

It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking is a loadbearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking. There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn’t have to be chore. Starting a walking program is as easy as walking to local shops and walking the children to school rather than driving or taking a bus. Smart Snack Choices

How to Make Healthy School Lunches for Kids paper sack and pull out something that has been so squashed it's unrecognizable. Partitioned lunch boxes enable you to pack different items together where they can be stored separately. The divisions also help you remember to include foods from the basic food groups, such as a fruit, vegetable, protein, starch and dairy item.

METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

Confrontations focusing on diet between children and parents have been around seemingly since the beginning of time. Many children start off as cooperative eaters, anxious to try different types of foods. As they get older, the number of foods they're apt to eat diminishes, which can make choosing healthy items for lunches and dinners more difficult. It also can make packing lunches for school more challenging. Many initiatives have attempted to improve the quality of school lunches provided by school cafeterias. Government regulations to reduce the amount of fat and sodium in these lunches, and to introduce more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are one such initiative. Parents of students who prefer to bring their own lunches from home may be left wondering how they can create healthy lunches their kids will eat. ■ Purchase a new lunch container. There are many different new and innovative lunch containers that can make separating school lunches easy. Few kids want to dig into a brown

Have your child make a list of his or her favorite foods. Once the list has been made, see how you can make the foods healthier. For example, if chicken nuggets make the list, prepare your own nuggets with white meat chunks that are baked, not fried. If there are a number of bread items, see if you can substitute whole grain breads instead of white, bleached varieties.

Get creative. Children may not be inclined to eat loose pieces of fruit. But if the fruit is stuck on skewers or served with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel, it may look more appealing. Look to "mini" foods, which tend to be more fun as well. Little sandwiches and little burgers may pres-

Hummus: Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are naturally low in fat and high in fiber. This dip will keep you feeling full. Dark chocolate bark: Melt dark chocolate and add a desired fruit, such as dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins. Enjoy a small piece, which will be high in antioxidants, to fend off hunger pangs.

ent an optical illusion, where kids think they're eating only a small amount, but actually it's a full serving.

String cheese: An individual serving of lowfat mozzarella or Monterey Jack string cheese offers a serving of dairy and protein to keep you full.

Hide healthy foods within others. There are entire recipe books that teach you how to mix fruits and vegetables into desserts to increase nutritive value. Everything from spinach to tofu to beets have been included in items like cake, cookies and brownies. So if kids are reticent to dig into their greens, try a clever hiding method.

Smoothie: Whip up a smoothie made from protein-rich Greek yogurt and some frozen fruit. Add a dash of fruit juice and blend. Enjoy as a meal replacement or a refreshing snack.

Cut foods into fun shapes. Kids may be more inclined to eat a turkey and cheese sandwich if it's cut into star shapes or their favorite cartoon characters. Invest in a few cookie cutters so that lunchtime becomes fun time. Don't let the time of day dictate what you serve. As long as kids are eating healthy items, it doesn't matter when they eat them. If a child loves bagels, choose whole wheat bagels and add an egg on top for a nutritious lunch. Serve with a gelatin dessert that contains chunks of fruit and low-fat milk, and you're set.

Whole-grain crackers: Fiber-full grain crackers can satisfy salty cravings as well as fill your stomach with something hearty.

Backpack Safety Goes Beyond Back Pain teachers to reach a happy medium regarding textbook usage.

METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

When it comes to backpack safety, most people tend to think about injuries caused by a heavy backpack or one worn improperly. However, there are other dangers associated with backpacks and caution should be used. Backpacks change the way individuals walk. Because the person is carrying around extra weight, he or she may lose balance or trip and fall, especially when going down steps. To avoid secondary hazards from backpacks, consider these tips. ■

Don’t overload a backpack. Carry only what is necessary. If too many books are the issue, parents should talk to the school administrators and

When on the bus, safely store the backpack on a lap or under the seat. Be sure straps or the pack itself is not extending into the aisle. Recognize how much space the backpack takes up when worn. Be conscious of others when turning around or entering a confined space. Hold on to stair rails and do not run with a heavy backpack to help avoid slips and falls. Choose a lightweight backpack. Canvas backpacks are generally lighter in weight than leather backpacks. Do not add extra weight unnecessarily.

Seven Tips for Job Search Success Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just getting started, the job search process can be overwhelming. The job search can be particularly challenging for first-time job seekers who may not know where to start. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that candidates can differentiate themselves and improve their chances for success. Here are seven career search and interview tips to make your job search successful and rewarding: ■

Organize your search. Create a plan of attack-this can include developing a preparation timeline, creating or updating your resume, and compiling a list of potential employers as well as the kind of positions you seek. Maximize your reach. Websites like LinkedIn allow job seekers to stay in touch with previous classmates, internship advisors, colleagues and acquaintances, as well as find new networking opportunities. The site also offers a Learning Center with helpful videos for “Building your brand” and “Growing your network.” Make the most of your time. Instead of sending out dozens of applications at once, take the time to personalize your resume and cover letter for a few jobs you are really interested in and have a chance of landing. The extra time and effort will help you stand out from the crowd of competitors. Ensure your application is top notch. Think of your resume and cover letter as a way to build a bridge between you and the available position. Through your application, demonstrate your ability to do

Prepare for each interview. Complete an assessment of your experience, leadership roles, strengths and weaknesses before the interview, and be prepared to speak about each with the hiring manager. Research potential employers. In advance of your interview, make sure to thoroughly

The cost of college has risen by almost 130 percent in the last 20 years, making college education an unattainable goal for many students. Those who take out loans to pay their way may want to consider majors that may better prepare them for jobs in well-paying fields to pay off those loans. According to one salary data site, engineering majors are the majors to consider if salary is a priority.

Addressing the Four Most Common Post-retirement Challenges ARA CONTENT

There are plenty of reasons to rejoice about retirement — more time to spend with your family, the ability to travel more and the opportunity to pursue your true passions. And today's retirees can also appreciate the fact that on average, people continue to outlive previous generations. But that doesn't mean retirement comes without its challenges. Through his research on the topic, Dr. Robert Pokorski, chief medical strategist for an individual life insurance business, has identified the four most common nonfinancial challenges that most retirees face: ■

ity to help meet changing financial needs as people age. There are life insurance policies on the market that can provide funds for chronic care needs or be tapped as a source of cash during retirement. Any lifetime benefits taken

from these products during life will reduce the remaining death benefit available to the policy's beneficiaries. Annuities can be a source of guaranteed income that can last as long as the retiree lives.

The Newnan Times-Herald spent over a year highlighting the stories of surviving local World World II veterans in a project called “Our Greatest Generation.” This award-winning series presented the stories of over 120 local men and women and was a favorite of readers young and old.

Climbing health-care costs. Health problems are more common during retirement, and the associated costs are often much higher than expected.

Since the series ended, we have had countless requests to reproduce this collection of stories so they may be preserved for future generations and enjoyed time and again in their entirety.

Widowhood. It's not pleasant to imagine life after the death of your spouse but three in four married people are widowed for five years or more.

We are pleased to announce the entire series has been published in a limited edition hardcover book with 288 pages that tell the stories and feature photographs of these proud men and women.

Needing long-term care for a chronic illness. Many retirees don't plan on the need for chronic care but three in five men and four in five women will need care later in life. Outliving your retirement savings. More people are living to age 90 and beyond, and that's a good thing. However, this also means more folks have to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time.

Addressing these challenges Fortunately, there are new options that address these common issues. Medicare supplement insurance can help address the challenges of rising health-care costs. Medicare supplement insurance pays for some health care not covered by Medicare, according to Pokorski. Ways to address the other challenges Pokorski identified are available through new life insurance and annuity products that provide greater financial flexibil-
