Teacher from Germany makes memorable impact By Celia Shortt celia@newnan.com Moreland Elementary School teacher Janey Allen brought more with her this school year than just her experience as a special education teacher when she joined Moreland’s staff. She also brought a student teacher from Germany who has become an important part of the Moreland Elementary community in her seven weeks at the school. “I was invited by her to be an intern at Poplar Road,” said Anika Huter, a graduate student at the University of Oldenburg who is working on her master’s degree. “Her class was cut [in Germany]. So I came with her here.” Huter grew up in a small German village, and since the 10th grade, has long hoped to be a special education teacher. “We had special education kids in our little village,” she said. “I grew up being with these kids and having fun. Since 10th grade, I have wanted to be a special education teacher.” Germany, unlike the U.S., has only just began incorporating inclusion classes for special

education students. The U.S. has been practicing this method of education for much longer. Inclusion classes are those with both special education students and traditional students learning alongside each other. Huter wanted to study those classes for her master’s thesis — to see if the special education students were really included. Huter’s thesis is on American inclusion classrooms and the differences it makes in a special-needs child’s educational experience. Huter’s research includes questions and activities to verify that special education students are included in activities with traditional students and in what ways. “I asked each student four questions about who they did homework with, played with, and studied with,” she said. “For younger students, I asked who they read books with — things like that.” From those answers and specific activities which studied how the students included each other, Huter found successful results in her research. “I wanted to find out if they were really included,” she said.

“And they are really included. For example, students play with them at recess and at home.” “My research shows inclusion works,” she added. “I am going to take it back to Germany and use it there.” Huter also gave German lessons to the students. “One special needs student w it h m a ny cha l lenges ha s learned to speak German and has learned German numbers,” sa id Morela nd Elementa r y School Principal Melanie Perry. “He is more fluent in German than in English.” Both Perry and Allen are sad to see her go, but are glad that she was able to start off the school year at Moreland Elementary. “We’re going to miss her so much,” said Allen. “She did great. The PTC Classic consists of three different races: a women’s 5K, a men’s 5K, and the 15K open. All races are run on separate TAC-certified courses, and start and finish at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater.

Peachtree City Classic now part of USATF Trifecta Next month’s Peachtree City Classic, hosted annually by Peachtree City Running Club, will be the second in a series of three USA Track and Field races in Georgia as part of the Long Distance and Masters Running Competitions. PTC Classic Race Director George Martin, in making the announcement, explained the first running event in the series is the Iron Horse Express 5K, which takes place today in Kennesaw. The second is the PTC Classic 15K on Oct. 19, and the final event is the Dalton Red Carpet Half Marathon on Oct. 26. Cash prizes ranging from $25 to $300 are awarded to the top five male and female in the open and masters (40+) categories in each event.

“We are excited to be part of this trio of high profile races and believe it will only add prestige and credibility to our aptly named ‘Classic’ race,” Martin said. Details are available at the GA USATF website at www. usatfga.org. The PTC Classic consists of three different races: a women’s 5K, a men’s 5K, and the 15K open. All races are run on separate TAC-certified courses, and start and finish at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. The 5K races for men and women are open to the first 800 entrants in each category. The 15K is open to the first 1,500 entrants. All finishers in the different races will receive a special commemorative edition technical shirt to mark the

33rd year of this event. The races will take place on Oct. 19 along the scenic golf cart paths of Peachtree City. It is one of the most popular runs not only in Georgia, but in the Southeast, said Bob Dalton of the running club. The race is unique in its use of paved cart paths for the race. This scenic race is run mostly on the paths through the greenbelt areas, by lakes, through small tunnels, in the beautiful planned community of Peachtree City. “T he 1 5 K wa s voted t he best 15K course in Georgia by Georgia Athlete Magazine and is always a sellout,” Dalton said. “So participants are strongly encouraged to register early.” The 15K race is the RRCA State Championship again this year.

A Pre-Race Expo will be held at the amphitheater on Oct. 18 from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. A Race Day Expo will be held 7 – 11 a.m. also at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. The expos will include health and fitness products, sponsors, and selected vendors. Applications are available at various locations in Peachtree City, Newnan, and Fayetteville, including local recreation departments, libraries, and sporting goods stores. Eldest takes the wheel I consider myself, for the most part, a fairly calm person. By that I mean there’s not a lot that fazes me. Twenty-six years in the news business means I’ve pretty much seen the worst and the best in people. Right now, I’m freaking out. Eldest SON has gotten his driving permit. Not the fullblown version, but rather the “intro” one that requires an adult to be sitting next to him. That adult is the one who constantly hits the phantom brake on the passenger side, who constantly says slow down, who

Spell chek It’s hard to get cranky at someone for doing something you’ve done yourself. In my case, more times than I can count. So I will not be chunking any stones at the students and teachers who put together the 2013 yearbook for Minnesota’s Moorhead High. But it looks like I might be in the minority. Anyone who has written, edited, laid out or even read a school yearbook knows that things go wrong. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “P ublishing happens.” A student’s name is incorrectly spelled. A teacher is misidentified in a class picture. Photos of the weightlifting and chess clubs get switched. Those who aren’t affected may not even notice. No big deal. But the Moorhead mistake — a spelling error — is one that’s hard to overlook. First, because it’s on the yearbook cover. Second, because the word that’s misspelled is the name of the school. And the town. An extra “e” was added, turning Moorhead to Moorehead. Some people aren’t happy, not the Moores and certainly not the Moors. T h e i n c ide nt lef t t h o s e responsible red-faced, but for

constantly says “watch out for (fill in the blank),” who is constantly putting his hands over his eyes, who keeps checking his heart rate. That adult would be me. Root canal? Upside down

roller coaster? Open heart surgery with eyes wide open? Bring it on. But not this. I am considered a pretty good instructor. Years ago, while living in Alaska, we got a little sports car with a standard transmission. Only problem was the Little Black Dress had never driven a standard. I can fix that. Or so I thought. Our first adventure with the clutch did not go quite as planned. I was, shall we say, a little on edge, but nothing a glass of wine couldn’t fix. So our next trip I’m a little calmer and we are doing alright, sort of. I keep having to say “put in the clutch, put in the

clutch, put in the clutch.” But I’m saying it in a sort of stutter because the car is jumping up and down — like trying to talk when someone is shaking you. And I’m trying to mop up all the wine that’s spilling all over me. But The Dress is a fast learner, and soon was looking quite sexy zipping around town in our little sports car. And she drove it here. That is, until I totaled it running into the back of a Coweta County Sheriff’s Office investigator’s car. But that’s another story. To his credit, Eldest is actually quite adept behind the wheel. I guess years of driving boats and golf carts and waverunners helps. He is 15 years old

and he is fearless. And that’s what I fear. Over my career, I’ve covered more car accidents than I can count. More upsetting, I’ve covered way too many fatalities, many here in Coweta. And now Eldest is controlling several hundred pounds of steel (okay, plastic in this day and age). And it freaks me out. So I keep reminding him of those fatalities, to always know what’s in front of him and behind him. To know there’s a blind spot and he has to turn to see, to always use his signals, to always stop at the stop sign and then move forward, to watch his speed, the curve, that car … And I realize I sound like my

Yield: 10 servings 1/2 pound green beans, washed, ends trimmed and cut into thirds 2 pounds potatoes, washed, peeled and diced large 1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise 2 lemons, juiced 1/4 cup olive oil 3 bell peppers, seeded and diced small 1 cup fresh parsley, chopped fine 1 red onion, diced small Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Kids Can: Snap the ends off the beans and break them into thirds. Fill medium-sized mixing bowl halfway with ice and water; set aside. Fill large sized stock pot 3/4 full with lightly salted water. Bring to rolling boil over medium-high heat. Add green beans to boiling water and let cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Using a hand strainer, remove green beans from boiling water and place into the ice water to stop them from cooking. After the green beans have cooled down, remove them from the ice water and set aside. Carefully add cut potatoes to same boiling water greens beans were cooked in. Cook potatoes in boiling water for around 15 minutes, depending on size. Once tender, drain and rinse with cold water. Kids Can: In large mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, lemon juice and olive oil. Stir the mayonnaise mixture to combine. Add all of the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and lightly stir to combine all flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Keep potato salad cold in the refrigerator and stir before serving on favorite greens.

Yield: 4 servings 20 Fingerling potatoes, sliced thin 1 large onion, sliced 2 bell peppers, sliced 2 cups mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons fresh herbs, chopped fine (basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary) 2 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat, or an oven at 375°F. In medium sized mixing bowl combine potatoes, onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, herbs and olive oil. Stir ingredients to combine and season lightly with salt and pepper. Make 4 12 x 12-inch squares of aluminum foil and lay them out to be stuffed. Place a chicken breast in the middle of each foil square, and lightly season with salt and pepper. Evenly distribute vegetable mixture on top of each chicken breast. Fold each packet so that a tight seal is formed and all the food is contained. Grill packets, or bake them in the oven, for 20 to 30 minutes until internal temperature of chicken reaches 165°F. Remove packets from heat and let cool slightly. Open packets carefully as hot steam may rush out. Kids Can: Help slice veggies and stuff their pockets with their favorites.

Perry named Moreland principal T he Coweta Cou nt y Board of Education appointed Melanie Perry as Moreland Elementary School’s new principal during a called board meeting on Tuesday. Perry will succeed Beverly Yeager, who is retiring at the end of June. Yeager is a 33-year educator who has served as Moreland Elementary School’s principal since 1988.

The grand opening of the long-awa ited city New na n Centre events facility located next to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Lower Fayetteville Road will be today at 10 a.m. Those involved with the building of the facility celebrated at a black-tie ga la Tuesday. The Newnan Centre will be a multi-use facility for the city, businesses, and members of the community. Newnan Mayor Keith Brady and members of the Newnan City Council will officially cut the ribbon to open the facility and begin the day’s festivities. A dedication and light refreshments will follow. Newnan Convention Center Authority Chairman Parks Avery said he is excited about the new facility and what it means for Newnan and Coweta County. “This is going to be a cool place,” he said as the finishing touches were being made in April. “We are going to start seeing a ton of change all at once. If Senoia wants to continue to grow, the city needs more water. C u r r e n t l y, t h e c it y ’s water system does fine in the winter, early spring and late fall. But during the hot and dry times, it has to buy water from the Coweta County Water and Sewerage Authority. The city’s water plant can treat twice the amount of water it currently treats, if it had the supply. The city is currently limited by its permit that only allows 300,000 gallons a day to be withdrawn from the reservoir on Keg Creek. City Administrator Richard Ferry and the Senoia Cit y Cou nci l d iscussed options at Monday’s council meeting. The city currently has an agreement with the Coweta Wa t e r a n d S e w e r a g e Authority to use the authority’s water when needed, but there is no contract.

According to Coweta County events services coordinator Tray Baggarly, on July 10 at 7 p.m. in the historic 1904 Court-

house in downtown Newnan, one of the movie’s producers, Dick Atkins, will give a presentation and talk about what went into turning local author Margaret’s Anne Barnes’ book into a made-for-TV movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash. In addition, several local residents will display memorabilia they have associated with

the movie, and some who were extras in the production will talk about their experiences. The next evening, July 11, at 7 p.m. at the Carnegie Library on the Court Square, Atkins will talk about the production of the movie, followed by a screening of the movie. “Murder in Coweta County” is the true story of a brutal mur-
