Taste of Home cooking school returns Nov. 14 Culinary program comes to Newnan adding spice to the season Newnan Utilities and The Newnan Times-Herald bring the return of the Taste of Home Cooking School to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Nov. 14. A specialist from the organization that produces Taste of Home magazine will add culinary kick to the season, sharing delicious recipes with local home cooks. The perfect recipe for creating new memories with loved ones includes good friends, good conversation a nd, of course, great food. Home cooks from across the country are heading back to the kitchen to prepare fall’s comforting favorites and the Taste of Home Cooking School plans to demonstrate seasonal recipes that are certain to delight. Taste of Home culinary specialist Michelle Roberts will return to share some tips and tricks while demonstrating step-by-step recipes for the sea-

son’s best dishes. The Taste of Home Cooking School is America’s leading program, inspiring more than 300,000 passionate home chefs at approximately 300 events nationwide. Local Longhorn ‘harvests’ food for those in need By Clay Neely clay@newnan.com

Longhorn Steakhouse’s parent company, Darden Restaurants Inc., created the Darden Harvest program 10 years ago as way to help feed the hungry in the communities in which they operate. Here in Newnan, the local Longhorn will “harvest” surplus, wholesome food t hat wasn’t served in its restaurant and donate it to the Newnan Housing Authority. Items such as fresh fish and other meats, soups and bread are donated. These items are never leftovers — just unused, fresh food. Rebeka Prater, managing partner for the Longhorn Steakhouse in Newnan, provided a glimpse of their “harvest”

operation. She explained that every Darden restaurant is strongly encouraged to participate in the harvest program and that the goal of the Longhorn Steakhouse in Newnan is between 50 to 100 pounds of food a week. “The food has to not only be safe but it has to be quality as well. For instance, if you’re trimming off meat, it has to be 70 percent lean. Anything and everything that we don’t have a use for but is completely safe is good to go.” All employees are trained how to prepare the “harvest” surplus. Prater walked through the preparation of the food for the harvest. Fresh meats, chicken, fish and breads are cooked, cooled, labeled and logged then stocked

in the cooler until the weekly pickup. If the designated amount of daily specials aren’t ordered, they will cook them regardless and then store them as well. She makes it clear that all the food that is used in the harvest is made explicitly for that purpose. “Once any food is served at the table, it goes directly in the trash. Darien Alan Key attains Eagle Scout rank; family active in scouting Darien Alan Key of Newnan has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 59 in Newnan. Eagle Scout is the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, and Key is one of approximately four percent of all Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. In addition to his 21 merit badges, which were required for the rank of Eagle Scout, Key

earned an additional 15 merit badges. He successfully organized and led a community leadership service project, which benefited the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Palmetto, Georgia. He bui lt a porch swing with a roof and added mulch, overlooking the lake. Key h a s held nu merou s Boy Scout leadership positions, including Quartermaster, Patrol Leader and Assistant

Malik Wynn has spent the last 11 years as a part of the Newnan /Coweta Boys and Girls Club and recently his commitment to the club was honored, as he was named 2013 Youth of the Year. Wynn was selected by various staff of the club. The staff then made its selection from youths who were named youth of the month. From there, three finalists are chosen. Wynn is 17 now and a senior at Newnan High School. He started coming to the club with his older sister when he was 6 years old. “I saw her get involved in activities. It made me want to,” said Wynn. As to why he kept coming back, Wynn said it was “because the environment was very friendly, and it was easy to make friends.” Some of his favorite activities included the game room and those for teens with his favorite being music-making in the studio. Another valuable club activity called College Bound. Wynn was paired with a mentor who helped him prepare for life after high school. Wynn is planning on attending college and his mentor helped him prepare a career path, citing which schools were best suited for the chosen career, what tests and grades he would need to get there. “I plan on attending college for music performance with a minor in business,” said Wynn. “My time [at the club] has helped. It has given me more ideas on how to prepare and look at college.” His top three choices for school are Florida A&M University, Point University, and Clayton State University. Yield: 12 slices Serving size: 1 slice • 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1/3 cup natural cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup cold water • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar • 1/3 cup canola oil • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar Preheat oven to 350°F. I was on vacation a few days last week, so here’s something from the archives. And yes, I’ll be writing about our latest adventures on the high seas in the future. ••••• Recently I’ve been on a “what if” kick. What if the electricity went out? What would the SONS of Thunder do? No Nintendo Wii, no Sony Playstation, no online computer ga mes. T he PSPs and Ipods and other handheld devices would eventually run out of juice. And they’d be stuck just looking at us with a “how can I survive?” look on their faces. I remember the good old days, days of rocks and sticks and dirt. We could create anything out of those materials. Kids today have no imagination. They are zombies without devices that plug-in or have rechargeable batteries. Or are they? Enter the blue ball. The blue ball came about because the Little Black Dress was sick and tired of the Sons sitting inside playing computer ga mes “ W H EN I T IS PERFECTLY GORGEOUS OUTSIDE!!!” Or something to that effect. So she went and bought a $2.50 ball — blue in color, about 2 feet in diameter. Thinking about that purchase, I realized it was about 100 to 150 times less expensive than some of their other toys. “Go play. Go play outside. Here,” she said as she handed the SONS the blue ball. There were looks of disbelief, some whining and a few muttered “we have no life, you never let us do anything fun, it’s too hot, what do we do with this, all my friends ...” So they shuff led off with heads down. Within a few minutes, inspiration apparently struck. The old kickball game started off, with lots of various unheard of rules. That soon led to some type of baseball game and The Dress warning the SONS not to get too close to each other because they might hit one

another in the head and … Too late. A SON is slammed upside the head. And everyone is blaming everyone else for why said SON got hit and someone wasn’t following some rule and so on and so forth. Whatever. Man up and play was my motto. After wiping the tears and snot and everything else, a new game commenced. All I know is it involved one SON holding the ball and running as hard as he could into another SON. If the second SON was knocked down, the first SON then threw the ball as hard as he could at the fallen SON, apparently with face hits counting double. This, of course, led the LBD to start yelling about being too rough and how the youngest SON weighs about one-tenth the second SON and you can’t sit on him and … Then I open my stupid mouth and try to point out the SONS are, indeed, boys, and they are named the SONS of Thunder for a reason. Which leads the LBD to giving me one of those looks. And I try and respond with the fact they will be fine and then, of course, one of the SONS gets nailed and starts crying. And I get that other look from The Dress. I never win. But I learned a few things. One, the SONS are incredibly quiet when they are playing electronics. They are incredibly loud when using non-electronic devices. Two, they have amazing imaginations. Three, their imaginations have no limits. I have a wonderful opportunity and a scary obligation: to help them never lose that imagination. Because with it, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. No pressure.

Callaway gears up for Fantasy in Lights’ 22nd anniversary This holiday season marks the 22nd anniversary of Fantasy In Lights at Callaway Gardens — named one of the “Top 10 Places to See Holiday Lights” by National Geographic Traveler. Fantasy in Lights features eight million lights stretching more than five miles, creating 15 larger-than-life holiday scenes. Callaway Gardens sets Pine Mountain ablaze from Nov. 22 through Dec. 30. P urchasing tickets in advance, meaning prior to the day of visit, is strongly advised a nd prov ide s d i s c ou nte d prices, say Callaway representatives. Advance ticket prices start at $17 for adults and $8.50 for children, with children 5 and younger admitted for free.
