Longhorn employee Greg Godwin helps load the weekly “’harvest” into the van for Shannon Arnold for the Newnan Housing Authority.

Local Longhorn ‘harvests’ food for those in need By Clay Neely clay@newnan.com

Longhorn Steakhouse’s parent company, Darden Restaurants Inc., created the Darden Harvest program 10 years ago as way to help feed the hungry in the communities in which they operate. Here in Newnan, the local Longhorn will “harvest” surplus, wholesome food t hat wasn’t served in its restaurant and donate it to the Newnan Housing Authority. Items such as fresh fish and other meats, soups and bread are donated. These items are never leftovers — just unused, fresh food. Rebeka Prater, managing partner for the Longhorn Steakhouse in Newnan, provided a glimpse of their “harvest”

operation. She explained that every Darden restaurant is strongly encouraged to participate in the harvest program and that the goal of the Longhorn Steakhouse in Newnan is between 50 to 100 pounds of food a week. “The food has to not only be safe but it has to be quality as well. For instance, if you’re trimming off meat, it has to be 70 percent lean. Anything and everything that we don’t have a use for but is completely safe is good to go.” All employees are trained how to prepare the “harvest” surplus. Prater walked through the preparation of the food for the harvest. Fresh meats, chicken, fish and breads are cooked, cooled, labeled and logged then stocked

in the cooler until the weekly pickup. If the designated amount of daily specials aren’t ordered, they will cook them regardless and then store them as well. She makes it clear that all the food that is used in the harvest is made explicitly for that purpose. “Once any food is served at the table, it goes directly in the trash. Leftovers have nothing to do with the food we prepare,” said Prater. Gly n i s Ta n ner f rom t he Newnan Housing Authority drops in to pick up the harvest each week. Prater emphasizes the company’s involvement within the local community. They don’t

Delicious Desserts that have stood the test of time Each decade has its own distinct foods, including desserts. Yet some of these decadent treats — such as southern Lemon Chess Pie from the 1820s, Strawberry Shortcake from the 1850s, or New York’s Black and White Cookies, first baked up in the Roaring 1920s — have stood the test of time. To celebrate these nostalgic sweets, this “Decades of Decadence” recipe col-

lection serves up a delicious trip down memory lane with modern inf luence by Ellie K rieger, M . S., R . D., host of the Cooking Channel’s “Healthy Appetite.” “History shaped these desserts and they have stuck a round because they a re inherently delicious,” she says. “They were driven by the availability of ingredients in their day, advertising by food companies in wom-

en’s magazines and advancements in food technology or appliances.” To boost nutrition and keep saturated fat in check, the recipes are updated with hearthealthy ingredients, such as low-fat yogurt, whole-grain flour and canola oil, which has the least saturated fat and most omega-3 fat of all common culinary oils.

Wynn was selected by various staff of the club. The staff then made its selection from youths who were named youth of the month. From there, three finalists are chosen. I was on vacation a few days last week, so here’s something from the archives. And yes, I’ll be writing about our latest adventures on the high seas in the future. ••••• Recently I’ve been on a “what if” kick. What if the electricity went out? What would the SONS of Thunder do? No Nintendo Wii, no Sony Playstation, no online computer ga mes. T he PSPs and Ipods and other handheld devices would eventually run out of juice. And they’d be stuck just looking at us with a “how can I survive?” look on their faces. I remember the good old days, days of rocks and sticks and dirt. We could create anything out of those materials. Kids today have no imagination. They are zombies without devices that plug-in or have rechargeable batteries. Or are they? Enter the blue ball. The blue ball came about because the Little Black Dress was sick and tired of the Sons sitting inside playing computer ga mes “ W H EN I T IS PERFECTLY GORGEOUS OUTSIDE!!!” Or something to that effect. So she went and bought a $2.50 ball — blue in color, about 2 feet in diameter. Thinking about that purchase, I realized it was about 100 to 150 times less expensive than some of their other toys. “Go play. Go play outside. Here,” she said as she handed the SONS the blue ball. There were looks of disbelief, some whining and a few muttered “we have no life, you never let us do anything fun, it’s too hot, what do we do with this, all my friends ...” So they shuff led off with heads down. Within a few minutes, inspiration apparently struck. The old kickball game started off, with lots of various unheard of rules. That soon led to some type of baseball game and The Dress warning the SONS not to get too close to each other because they might hit one

another in the head and … Too late. A SON is slammed upside the head. And everyone is blaming everyone else for why said SON got hit and someone wasn’t following some rule and so on and so forth. Whatever. Man up and play was my motto. After wiping the tears and snot and everything else, a new game commenced. All I know is it involved one SON holding the ball and running as hard as he could into another SON. If the second SON was knocked down, the first SON then threw the ball as hard as he could at the fallen SON, apparently with face hits counting double. This, of course, led the LBD to start yelling about being too rough and how the youngest SON weighs about one-tenth the second SON and you can’t sit on him and … Then I open my stupid mouth and try to point out the SONS are, indeed, boys, and they are named the SONS of Thunder for a reason. Which leads the LBD to giving me one of those looks. And I try and respond with the fact they will be fine and then, of course, one of the SONS gets nailed and starts crying. And I get that other look from The Dress. I never win. But I learned a few things. One, the SONS are incredibly quiet when they are playing electronics. They are incredibly loud when using non-electronic devices. Two, they have amazing imaginations. Three, their imaginations have no limits. I have a wonderful opportunity and a scary obligation: to help them never lose that imagination. Because with it, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. No pressure.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms — Numbness, Tingling, Burning or Sharp Nerve Pain In Your Feet — DESPITE WHAT MANY DOCTORS MAY TELL YOU, PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY CAN BE EFFECTIVELY TREATED

Peripheral Neuropathy affects every part of your life — walking, sleeping, socializing, sometimes even sitting and so much more.

Ask Yourself These 5 Questions:

If you have tried “everything” (Lyrica®, Neurotin®, physical therapy, orthotics for your shoes, even injections) without getting the lasting results you want then you may be the perfect candidate for my Neuropathy Program. There is a simple reason that these treatments fail… because they are only covering up the symptoms. They do not address the root cause of your Peripheral Neuropathy. We all know this to be true. There is a tremendous difference between covering up your symptoms and actually fixing the underlying problem. Why settle for “band-aid” care, when you could potentially correct the problem?

The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy Has Been Years in the Making… It cost me thousands of dollars and countless hours away from my family, researching, reading, talking with experts in the scientific community and racking my brain in order to create a “No-Holds Barred”, exceedingly effective Neuropathy Recovery Program. Finally my Neuropathy program is available to you. And the best news is that the principles of my Neuropathy Recovery Program work with both diabetic and nondiabetic types of neuropathy. How does my Neuropathy Program work? Quite simply, by finding the TRUE cause of your Neuropathy and then having the “know-how” on how to remove that cause. Every patient’s case of Neuropathy will be different, so I don’t have the space here to go into more details. That is why I am offering a Special Evaluation in order to see if you can be helped with my Neuropathy Recovery Program. My patients know my insider secrets to recovery. They have already received their individualized Neuropathy Recovery Program and are having amazing results. Here is what they are saying: “This is the first time in many years that I have been able to feel my feet.” -Ben Hollis

As Seen On Atlanta & Company on 11Alive

“I have suffered from severe neuropathy in both feet for close to 10 years. My previous doctors said it was due to my Diabetes and that I would just have to live with it. After reading about Dr. Dunn, I went to go see him. I’ve completed the treatment plan that he outlined and am happy to say that I am finally symptom free.” — Bill Schwartz “Before seeing Dr. Dunn, the neuropathy in my feet was so bad that I couldn’t even drive a car. Now, I can drive myself to get groceries and go to Wal-Mart whenever I want to. Dr. Dunn truly gave me my life back.” — Mary Jenkins “After the first treatment, I noticed an immediate improvement. For the first time in many years, I was actually able to sleep through the night without my feet waking me up.” — Susie Sayer Now let me say this, I am not promising that I can cure everyone. I don’t even know if you qualify for my program. That is yet to be determined, and requires a thorough exam and review of your history. I know that you’ve been promised the moon and stars before and nobody has delivered the goods. That’s why I’m offering you a risk-free introduction to this program. For a limited time you will receive my Qualifying Examination Special for only $47 if you call before November 8, 2013.

Correct Diagnosis + Correct Treatment = Best Results Possible and Relief. If you are tired of the institutionalized medical merry-go -round of cover up care, then you need to try my program. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

1. Do you feel like you’re wearing an invisible “sock” over your feet? 2. Does it feel like you are stepping on thumb tacks? 3. Are you extremely sensitive to touch… Burning, Freezing or electric “shocks” into your legs or feet? 4. Are you experiencing Numbness, Tingling, Loss of Feeling or even Weakness in your legs or feet? 5. Are you starting to have balance problems now because of your feet? If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, chances are you may have Peripheral Neuropathy. If you’ve been suffering for a while and you’re tired of treatments that only give you temporary relief, then I may have the answer you’ve been waiting and hoping for. Remember, this Special Offer is only good until the 8th of November. Call today 770-450-4541 and we can get you scheduled for your consultation and exam as soon as there’s an opening. When you call, tell Donna or Jennifer that you’d like to come in for my Neuropathy Recovery Evaluation so she can make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Dr. Matt Dunn, D.C.

P.S. See Dr. Dunn interviewed about Neuropathy on 11Alive Morning and hear him on 95.5 FM “WSB” Dr. Dunn practices in Peachtree City, Georgia and specializes in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy and Herniated Discs. See My Patients Share Their Stories of Hope & Success:
